Your video reminds me of stories my grandmother told me of a winter in Angrogna, where you are. She said it snowed so much one winter that they feared the rock roof might collapse. She said they lived off potatos they had harvested for several months as they were trapped in the area. She said they cooked them every way they could imagine. Consequently, she was not too fond of potatoes after that!
Here in the Appalachians, we also get these late, heavy snows, typically followed by high winds which compound the damage. At some point, the sound of cracking and falling trees signals the woods can no longer bear the powerful wind. Many here have trail vehicles, 4-wheelers and side-by-sides, to which we attach small snow blades. They can go where no cars or trucks can go and can clear the narrow roads. They are also good for shoving the downed trees aside. Yes, these snows bring "a bit of work," an understatement. I am near 70, and a woman, and like you, have no one nearby. Loading in the firewood and clearing snow from the Christmas trees is a challenge. Keep your protein and fluids up, lol. Always keep several weeks of food, at least some dried beans and rice to get you through. Cheers and dreams of spring! Much love from the highlands of Virginia ❤️

I've been following quietly from the beginning, enjoying the journey. This episode is a cinematphic gem. Particularly loved the encounter with Johannes.
Yes, a gazebo would definitely look too urbane for an alpine farmstead. But it’s definitely fitting that your decking is being recycled and yet keeping its purpose intact!

Martijn you are so right. The beautiful area you are in does not need a gazebo. I feel it would be out of place too. That beautiful scenery doesn’t need anything in the way of the view. What an amazing job you are doing!
Perhaps you could build yourself another outhouse closer to your house Martijn. I’d be interested to know why you changed your mind for not putting one inside, especially given all the plumbing work you’ve already prepared for it. Cheers from Australia. 👏🏻🇦🇺
I thought the same , when there is 50cm of snow outside and its 2am , I think Id rather have the convenience of a toilet in the same cabin I'm sleeping in!
Amazing how the colors are grey white and dark at first. The branches are sad and bowed down in snow and ice. And then the blue sky comes out. I am sure the snow will cause flooding and change to the terrain. Hearing the water roar in the distance . So glad you are safe . Thank you for sharing your story
I hate that heavy wet snow, we get it often here in central Italy. It causes a lot of damage even when it does not result in avalanches. It brings down electric and telephone lines, collapses barns and roofs...
never see you talking to the chickens. have had chicken friends in the past and they loved the attention. one used come in through the window and sit on the couch while i taught piano lessons. good friends.
Good morning Martjin! You having to deal with excessive snow and cold in Italy while I have to deal with extreme heat and torrential rain in Brazil. One important tip: Never give the chickens whole eggs to eat, because this way they will learn that this are food and will eat them before you collect them. Take care! See you next week.😉✌️
"It needs to be given back to nature." Wonderful words and actions that we can all aspire to. It can be difficult to tear down previously used areas or plant trees and grasses near our homes without it impeding human structures and causing potential damage to homesteads, but it is important to always think of the biodiversity of habitat. Embracing nature is part of the journey; encouraging habitat and living within it has only positive outcomes.
Birch trees are amazingly bendy even in -30c conditions, the same happens in northern finland every winter. It’s fun to shake the tree and watch it shake the snow off and spring back up. 😄
It brought back memories of my father when he did the outside patio, walkways and even the footpaths in the garden using pieces of marble from a factory. The deal was, to clean the factory and take all the pieces of marble that he could find. It was like 80 to 90 square meters. It took forever, but, he had the patience to match up colour, shapes and thickness. I was 13 years old. Now I am in my 80's. I agree, no gazebo. Thank you for your videos and teaching about discipline.
Remember when you first entered the cabin with the remnants of having cattle and the midges, mice, and how cramped the space was? What a difference you have made! Now you can relax a bit more as you further develop a wonderful setting to enjoy. It must be a great experience to enjoy the shelter knowing how protected you are in the restored spaces. Somehow this feels like a Thriller/Crime Show, the music, the mood. Just the "bad stuff" (murder, violence, and so on) being not in it. Love it.
Coffee with Martin on Sunday morning , just great . 😊
I've been following quietly from the beginning, enjoying the journey. This episode is a cinematphic gem. Particularly loved the encounter with Johannes.
Your little hens are AMAZING!!! In such stormy weather, there you find TWO EGGS IN THE NEST!!!! Little troupers just keep going.......❤
It,s amazing how much you have accomplished ,your place looks great ,rustic and comfortable.
Yes, a gazebo would definitely look too urbane for an alpine farmstead. But it’s definitely fitting that your decking is being recycled and yet keeping its purpose intact!
Hardest working man I've seen, and so kind!
Moving through life in a gentle manner, you should be so proud of all your achievements. Can't wait to see your artwork.
Martijn you captured the beauty of nature. Absolutely stunning video of snow scenery. Your rock work is beautiful. I repeat watch all your videos many time. Please show us your lovely spring flowers. Thank you.
I thought the same , when there is 50cm of snow outside and its 2am , I think Id rather have the convenience of a toilet in the same cabin I'm sleeping in!
i guess it will destroy the atmosphere of that epic livingroom
@@caseybachmeyer I thought it was a bedroom with ensuite.
@@Tony_P ah, then it will destroy the atmosphere of that epic bedroom...an it will be more big, space is important
@@Tony_Pfor those situations a bottle works 😊
The sun will come out tomorrow, meanwhile snow is only this dreadful and beautiful in the mountains. Blessings to you, Martijn.
We appreciate your dedication and hard work. Keep it up as always.
Amazing how the colors are grey white and dark at first. The branches are sad and bowed down in snow and ice. And then the blue sky comes out. I am sure the snow will cause flooding and change to the terrain. Hearing the water roar in the distance . So glad you are safe . Thank you for sharing your story
You have channeled your energy well. You might be a world class stone mason, chef, and photographer, as well as bicyclist.
Yay! Another fabulous video form Martijn……👏👍🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
This would be a great painting too, when you step through the snow upwards the Hill with your Lamp in the Night.
One important tip:
Never give the chickens whole eggs to eat, because this way they will learn that this are food and will eat them before you collect them.
Take care! See you next week.😉✌️
In Melbourne Australia we are "enjoying???" an extended summer - the last 3 days 32-37 degrees. Summer started late so I suppose it is balancing out.
Prachtig Martijn! Zo mooi gefilmd 👍🏻👍🏻
Wow! Dramatic! Looks powerfully freezing. Can't imagine living there. Admiration.
This is my zen moment of the week. It keeps me balanced for …. A couple of days. Cheers
Thanks Martijn. Every week a joy to watch.
The winter there is frightfully beautiful
Remember when you first entered the cabin with the remnants of having cattle and the midges, mice, and how cramped the space was? What a difference you have made! Now you can relax a bit more as you further develop a wonderful setting to enjoy. It must be a great experience to enjoy the shelter knowing how protected you are in the restored spaces. Fancy having a SMEG fridge…. Sublime! Joy 42:57
