Himmel getting us upset at will again. Being friend-zoned sucks! Episode 20 is now live on Patreon for anyone wanting to get ahead! www.patreon.com/carlie_and_ange
Carlie had the same reaction my wife had. I was sad, but she had tears immediately. Just, instantly devastated by the beauty and tragedy of Himmel. A man great enough to accept that Frieren wouldn’t ever be able to reciprocate his feelings in his lifetime, if ever, but still know that she was the one for him and never deviated from it. Even at a distance, loving her in that fashion was enough for him. No pressure, no condemnation, just understanding and grace. Children and bitter people say that makes him a “simp”, but there’s nothing toxic or demeaning about genuine love. Rather, there’s an admirable strength to that kind of resolve in the face of seeming despair.
Simps are despicable, they shower their love interest with gifts and act that they just want to treat them well. But secretly all simps hope to get to date the girl. Himmel is what true love is like just the way you described it.
I kind of agree, but I also think it speaks to the importance of telling people how you feel. I love Himmel and he is a GOAT, but if his love was so strong, he owed it to himself and Frieren to be honest.
Simp has become void of meaning. Those who call Himmel a simp are either kids joking around with a very different perspective on life from a teen or an adult, or bitter adults who just don't understand how love works.
I think Himmel also understood that some day in the far future Frieren might learn to understand and hopefully appreciate the fact that Himmel loved her. But he definitely knew that he would be long dead by then. It's such a beautiful and tragic romance of a long-life and short-life species pair.
Exactly my thoughts! Modern concept of "love" is based on reciprocity, so being in love with someone who doesn't love you back simply makes you a simp. In contrast, the concept of love in this story is of the same kind of love you would have towards something, not someone. For example, love for your work, studies or hobbies, which is based on admiration, respect and passion. And I think love towards someone should be this way as well.
When you realize that Himmel knew that Frieren wasn't going to understand his feelings on his timeline, so instead he left her the statues, the ring, and other mementos so she could understand on her own timeline.
Frieren: I doubt Himmel knew what the mirrored lotus meant Me: Himmel? The guy who loved the flower field spell? The guy who wanted to show Frieren his favourite flower from his hometown? HE DEFINITELY KNEW Yeah their story is beautiful but tragic 😭
It is not tragic lmao. or you should word it better, its tragic for Himmel falling for someone who it's pretty much un able to have romantic feelings for someone else.
@@sebastyann123they are able to I think, they just don’t really have much interest in it as humans do. What’s tragic about it is that Himmel knew her being an elf (the aspect of time) is standing between them. He chose wisely and decided to not make his feelings as clear to frieren knowing she wouldn’t get it even though he is obvious to everyone else. That’s why I feel so bad for him, he could’ve make her understand but knew she‘d be the one to suffer in the end.
@@Bayard1503 I think it's more like she is slowly realizing it. Just like she is realizing with many other things like for example how the adventure changed her even though earlier she didn't realize it did or maybe even thought it didn't change her at all
@@Bayard1503 I believe that Frieren is more in the dark about her own feelings than Himmel's or anyone else's. Like for the ring, she definitely knew about what it meant since ep1, that's like 30 years ago. The flashback is just relevant now.
a tragic comparison between Frieren and Fern's mirrored lotus accessory is Fern's Mirrored Lotus is blooming(mutual), while Frieren's is still budding(one-sided). which is bitter sweet, because I think the reason why Himmel never straight up confessed to Frieren is so she would not be burdened by grief after he died.
But Frieren was still burdened somehow. He did not propose because he wished Frieren could understand how he felt. But for a elf, it might take 80 years.
@@justwatchnotsay Honestly meeting with Himmel was already a huge impact on Frieren lol, whether or not he did that, remembering in the future is inevitable for Frieren. He did not wish for her to understand, he simply was confessing his love to Frieren, he especially didn't directly say "I love you" exactly because he didn't want to burden her- pushing the idea of "love" on her. You might saw it as obvious confession but for Frieren it was subtle. From this point, Frieren could've taken it as "he just put a ring on my finger" OR she's willing to learn what he meant, it was up to Frieren and in the end she chose to "learn" it.
I like to think of Frieren as a 'Coming of Age' story where Frieren finds her "humanity." It is in many ways the story of Frieren learning what it means to be human, despite the fact that she is not one.
I feel like her purpose is to show US, the viewers, what to value. Really nice. She basically symbolizes our „regrets“ and how we should deal with them. Basically cherishing life.
Remember well that in episode 1, Himmel harboured no bad blood towards Frieren in any capacity. His last words were words of gratitude towards her for coming back one last time and offering him a last adventure. He never blamed her or lamented the unrequited love. He was just too damn good.
That's why I hate half of this fandom. They get angry bc Frieren never fell in love with Himmel and I'm like, that's not the point of the god damn story lol Himmel also knew she would never love him that way and he was at peace with that.
Well he did it in a joking way, at least, like when he was visiting that village as an old man and called her heartless for not visiting. You could tell he didnt really mean it, but there may have been a hint of sadness there
That was one of best confession scenes ever and it didn't have any dialogue. It hurts so much that Himmel was fully aware that Frieren won't get his intention. He is the GOAT
The ring scene is one of the most beautiful anime scene I have ever seen. I'm pretty sure this scene is one of the main reason why many people wanted you guys to react to Frieren.
Himmel’s love is so amazingly gentle and kind, and my favorite part of this journey are the memories and flashbacks that show how much he loves Frieren. The look on his face when he saw what she picked out and knew immediately was just 🤌🏻😭😭
The difference in the design for Fern's bracelet and Frieren's ring is also great. Frieren's ring has the flower in the shape of a bud which will never bloom because Himmel is no more but Fern's bracelet has a blooming flower signifying her and Stark's growing relationship
on episode one after himmel's burial you can see frieren fiddling with the ring, this is an anime original scene that was not in the manga (as well as many other thing for example the proposing scene behind the clocktower rather than just behind random wall + "marriage" bell sounds), they really did a great job with this anime adaption of not just adapting it, but elevates it even further, not many anime adaptations are capable of this
A well written romance can make me go "aww", but rarely has it ever made my heart flutter like Himmel's cape billowing as he gets on his knee to put the ring on Frieren. It's also of note that you see Frieren hold the ring and look at it in episode 1, which is an anime original scene.
@@sebastyann123 Personally, I think that's too strict of a definition, and even if it were true, Frieren is a story of coming to terms with emotions that she didn't realise she had until long after he was gone. She says elves don't feel romantic attraction, but I think the show itself contradicts this, since the village she comes from had elven families, and her memories constantly go back to him. She's an unreliable narrator, if you will. Perhaps elves simply experience these feelings on a longer time scale, and the realisation of these feelings happen more gradually.
@@grumpysanta6318 I mean, if you pronounce it the german way (which would be topical, but after 20 episodes of them not being able to pronounce Rem and Ram differently I'm not holding my breath) Stern is actually really cute.
After rewatch I think that was moreso frieren not understanding her feelings or emotions yet... it's not that there's no desire but instead it's a much slower process cuz their timeline is closer to infinite and no rush ... the uptick in realization is shown in these eps as she slowly starts understanding humans by living w them and observing life in their timeliness ie her watching stark n fern on the rooftop
But we know that elf villages existed before they were destroyed by the demon king. It’s not that Elves can’t feel romantic love, it’s just that they take so long to develop feelings that they might as well go extinct (because of how little elves there are now) because of how long it takes.
After the rest of the Demons are Vanquished, the era of men will come, elves slowly fading and becoming myth, dwarf digging their own existence under the mountain.
So Himmel gave Frieren a ring. Fern gave Stark a bracelet. Stark gave Fern a bracelet. It all needs to come full circle by Frieren (attempting) giving Himmel a ring whenever they finally reach Heaven.
I once read somewhere that the ship between Fern and Stark is like buying a ticket to a luxury and amazing cruise that is about to sail... While the ship betwin Frieren and Himmel is like buying a ticket for the Titanic after it has already sank... that is so accurate 😢
I liked the theory that it's not that elves have no romantic/sexual drive (there were enough of them in the past to form villages after all), it just takes a long time to reach that point. Perhaps in Frieren's village she didn't live with them long enough to see it happen. For an elf, growing to feel romantic love may well take 80 plus years even with a really compatible partner. One might compare it to Tolkien elves, who even when married would usually only have a couple of children over a period of thousands of years.
Now that you've seen this episode, if you go back and watch the scene directly after Himmel's funeral, you can see something truly special (sooiler): Frieren holding the ring, contemplating its meaning... 😢😢 I'm on my 3rd rewatch of this show now (even though it's not even finished yet!), and I appreciate it more every time! Such amazing writing!!!
This show made me realize we can have shows that make us cry not only because of tragedy and death but also have a great show and make you cry because it is wholesome and lovely
This is the sadness that people talk about when they talk about this series. Other people always butt in like "yeah but the series is laid back and chill, and has funny momments. It's not sad". But they don't realise that, at its core, this series is a love story between the developing feelings of a woman and her memories of a man who has sinced passed away It's a story about falling in love with someone who is gone Which. Idk. As someone who has a fair few years under their belt, it's probably one of the most devestating stories that can be told. No matter how much the experience is lightened up with the other aspects of it
Absolutely. It's a tragic love story. Sure, there's some humor and some action but at its core, it's about Frieren finding her "humanity" and learning to understand the people in her life.
Love the imagery of the clocktower between Himmel and Frieren as he gives her the ring symbolizing that the only thing that stands between them is time.
I love that at around the 12:15 mark every time the video cuts, you see more tears appear on Carlie's shirt xD. This episode is a tear jerker for sure.
Yeah Sein knew what was up, Stark also isn't all that interested in himself based upon what has been seen. He stayed in that village where we met him for 3 years to try and help ensure the villages safety. Like Sein said he isn't that conscientious, he doesn't even care to remember his own birthday.
Whatching the two of you hold hands during the Ring Scene was glorious! Ep14 is truly my favorite of the series. It reauthors every previous flashback and sets up further connections between Himmel and Frieren. Through my tears in Ep2, I said "She loved him, too. Did he ever tell her?" And it was answered spectacularly here. The tragic love here is, honestly, beautiful and heartbreaking. 27 (at time of writing) episodes of beautiful, memorable character writing makes Sousou No Frieren one of the greatest watching experiences I've had for a long time.
I believe that a part of why stark and fern are introduced is to show frieren how lovers start and see her reaction to how two ppl she met grew from strangers to lovers in a short time(to her)
Himmel might've been able to express his love properly, if the recipient was human at least. But she's an elf, and he's human. He probably knew well how short their time together in her life was and who'd be left in this world, which might be why he couldn't tell her how he feel. Yet, despite his expectations, we see just how much those ten years with him meant to Frieren. It's truly a beautiful and tragic interspecies love story.
My favorite frieren episode. So bittersweet. Frieren head patting heiter is one of my favorite moments in this show. And Himmel giving frieren the ring made me so emotional (he is so cool and romantic). It made me tear up. So wholesome😭
I like how the anime made Stark and Fern's relationship feel so natural and unforced. The moments are so very recognizeable, when they start to have interest for one another, when that interest turns into affection, and so on. And all of it is seamlessly incorporated into the main storyline.
"im used to be losing things" the saddest sentence in this whole show. The only thing between Himmel and Frieren was the time (clocktower between them after proposing)
The care in adapting the manga is sublime. A detail that may have been lost. We see the ring in question from the very first episode and in the episode of Fern's gift to Stark (things that are absent in the manga). Not that it's needed, but therein lies the beauty-these are details that make all the difference in such an adaptation.
If you pay attention, in the first episode, you see her holding and looking at the ring after Himmel's death. Its the start of the scene before she says goodbye to Hieter and Eisen outside the city.
Most people wouldn’t marry someone they’ve just met a week ago. For Frieren, her ten year journey with Himmel was just that, a week. So, Himmel fell in love with her over that span but she couldn’t reciprocate because for most the realization that you love someone happens over a period longer than a week.
If you notice The Clock Tower background is like they have bounderies with time and I feel sorry for himmel that frieren took some time realizing those moments with him but it's now too late.
Himmel probably knew frieren wouldn’t really get it. I am convinced he didn’t really want her to know but at the same did wanted to be this way to her. He knows that since she is an elf and he is a human it wouldn’t work and break her later I guess. Because judging his personality he would have no problem making his feelings clear for HER to understand but he chose not to. It also looks like he loved her until the end. He waited for her and took his last breath next to her looking at the sky (= Himmel in german, translates to heaven at the same time). I think frieren knows she loves him but doesn’t grasp it fully as she has spend her whole life that is shout a thousand years old having no romantic feelings.
I think the trade-off for elves living thousands of years is that they often explore their emotional side very late and slowly. In terms of emotion, Frieren is quite literally still a child which is why sometimes Fern acts like a mother to her
Everyone is going gaga over the scene with Himmel and the ring. With good reason. But one of the most amazing animation bits in the show is when Fern finds Frieren looking for the ring. Just go back and watch that scene and how the emotions play across Fern's face. You can practically read her mind in real time.
I can’t imagine loving someone oblivious for years and years on end. That’s true love right there. Love the platonic haptics between Heiter and Frieren, and then later on getting passed to Sein as well. I wish I had friends who were more emotionally expressive, grounded, and rich as Heiter.
Frieren has quickly climbed into one of my top three Anime overall. I really like the slow and thoughtfull approach on stroytelling which is pretty hard to find in Anime sadly, with my favourite being Mushishi ( you should absolutely check that show out btw, its episodic but really great). It does everything so well without overdoing it, no loud screaming, I really wish there was more stuff like that. As a native german speaker I also find it funny how erverone is litteraly having their most common character trait as their name. Like Heiter being the german word for being in a good mood, Himmel literally meaning heaven and Frieren means to be freezing when its cold.
When I read this chapter, I was giggling like a school girl then distraught at the tragedy that's just occurred. Btw, if you go back to episode 1, Frieren checks out the ring after Himmels funeral. It's at 16:28 if anyone is interested
I love how you both were demanding that Himmel propose and he listened IMMEDIATELY! No words spoken and Himmel still cemented himself in Frieren’s heart almost a century later. A tragic hero but still the GOAT
Himmel really remenber me Jyraia "I love a woman... but I won't force her to love me! I will surround her with my love while I pray and wish for her happiness."
Himmel is truly the hero. He would never tie himself to her closely, only to die and leave a hole in her heart. Of course he would sacrifice his own love to protect her.
This ep also broke me for real. I was crying mess even when the next ep played I'm still crying over Himmel's love and his gesture. I love him so much I wish to have someone like him in my live 😭❤️
there's some parallel's ive drawn between frieren and mob -- they're bought very powerful characters whose goal doesnt rest with their power/ability, but their inability to express emotions and relate to others. frieren's whole journey here really seems to be to understand what the "mere 10 years" journey she took with the Hero's Party actually meant to her. yes in her perspective it's like a few months passing by, but she built memories and relationships that were dear to her, even more so now that she's building even more relationships with her new party and looking back at those memories in a new light. himmel's reaction when he saw the lotus bud ring (and a bud, not a blooming lotus flower like Fern's) tells me he knew *exactly* what the ring meant. but his lifespan and frieren's are so disparate. and with frieren they way she was then, he understood that she either could never form attraction to him in the first place, or never within his lifetime for them to actually have a life together. even now frieren doesn't seem to really understand what she felt for himmel either. the journey to know herself is such a fantastic throughline along with the traditional fantasy adventure
Also remember Frieren was alone for prob over 1000 years not only is it thet maybe elves struggle to make connections but Solitude for that long has a large factor to it as well

But they don't realise that, at its core, this series is a love story between the developing feelings of a woman and her memories of a man who has sinced passed away
It's a story about falling in love with someone who is gone
Which.
It's very satisfying to see the two of you immediately catch on to the story beats
Sein said that Stark might even forgot his own birthday, and a few episodes back it's true that he had just remember his birthday when Fern told him
Yeah Sein knew what was up, Stark also isn't all that interested in himself based upon what has been seen. He stayed in that village where we met him for 3 years to try and help ensure the villages safety. Like Sein said he isn't that conscientious, he doesn't even care to remember his own birthday.
Other romcom protags : i had to wait till XY seasons to get together
Himmel : Laughing in lifespans...
He is literally HIM-mel!!!
What separates them... is TIME.
And the clock is in the middle.
If you rewatch episode 1 you'll see her holding the ring in her palm after Himmel's funeral 😭😭
The teardrops on Carlie’s shirt.🥺
NOT FARK 😂😂😂😭😭😭😭😭
Whatching the two of you hold hands during the Ring Scene was glorious!
Ep14 is truly my favorite of the series. It reauthors every previous flashback and sets up further connections between Himmel and Frieren.
Through my tears in Ep2, I said "She loved him, too. Did he ever tell her?" And it was answered spectacularly here. The tragic love here is, honestly, beautiful and heartbreaking.
27 (at time of writing) episodes of beautiful, memorable character writing makes Sousou No Frieren one of the greatest watching experiences I've had for a long time.
I believe that a part of why stark and fern are introduced is to show frieren how lovers start and see her reaction to how two ppl she met grew from strangers to lovers in a short time(to her)
I love how the clock tower represents TIME ⏳ as the only thing separating Frieren and Himmel. 🥺💔
It's truly a beautiful and tragic interspecies love story.
but it is not a love story, I'm tired of people reducing this anime to a love story when it's not.
@@sebastyann123 care to explain then?
this anime is about the journey frieren realize Himmel love her, because of Elf nature its took so long to realise their feeling
My favorite frieren episode. So bittersweet. Frieren head patting heiter is one of my favorite moments in this show. And Himmel giving frieren the ring made me so emotional (he is so cool and romantic). It made me tear up. So wholesome😭
Id cry so hard if i was frieren just realing what himmel was trying so hard to show his love for her
I like how the anime made Stark and Fern's relationship feel so natural and unforced. The moments are so very recognizeable, when they start to have interest for one another, when that interest turns into affection, and so on. And all of it is seamlessly incorporated into the main storyline.
"Im going to vomit!" 😂😂 Me too, Ange. Its so beautiful and SO SAD! 🤮
18:00 I love when Ange randomly turns into a kettle whistle xDDDD
himmel was always so loving and gentle he was such a great dude and he loved frieren so much without expecting anything in return. truly him(mel)
"Heiter was apalled." All I'm gonna say! rofl
btw, the horse was floating after they fell from the sky because Frieren used the levitation spell to slow down their fall.
this show is S tier. looking forward to seeing you guys react to all of it as it comes out.
"im used to be losing things" the saddest sentence in this whole show. The only thing between Himmel and Frieren was the time (clocktower between them after proposing)
Sweet Carlie tears!!! Such an emotional episode. Having Sein along is great to be the adult in the room.
The ring scene is so well written and so devastating
The head pats in this show. I swear 🥲
So, Himmel fell in love with her over that span but she couldn’t reciprocate because for most the realization that you love someone happens over a period longer than a week.
the horse was actually in a floating spell from when the bird picked the carriage. thats why you can see it awkwardly galloping on air
In episode 1, she is fiddling with Himmel's ring right after the buried him. :(
In this journey, freiren also saw himmel in an illusion for the first time instead of her master flamme
Carlie face at 12:06 😭😭😭😭😭😭
If you notice The Clock Tower background is like they have bounderies with time and I feel sorry for himmel that frieren took some time realizing those moments with him but it's now too late.
Fark is funny as hell but it should be Ferk or stern lmfao😂😂
In terms of emotion, Frieren is quite literally still a child which is why sometimes Fern acts like a mother to her
The Fern x Stark ship is sailing! 🚢💕💕💕💕
Fark's matching bracelet is so cute indeed ^^
Everyone is going gaga over the scene with Himmel and the ring. With good reason. But one of the most amazing animation bits in the show is when Fern finds Frieren looking for the ring. Just go back and watch that scene and how the emotions play across Fern's face. You can practically read her mind in real time.
I can't wait for your reaction to the NEXT episode!
It's rough when you have one of those moments where you look back on your life and think, "Wait! Were they flirting with me?"
*80 years later*
"Did Himmel like me?"
The "I'm devastated too. I'm ill" absolutely sent me because you're entirely on the mark
This is the only reaction channel that's correctly called out how tragic this ep is. Well deserving of a sub
My guess is that Frieren is waiting to meet Himmel again so he could put the ring on her finger one last time
Great reaction!
What an episode!
We'll one day watch the first episode again, knowing the whole story, and it'll be as beautiful and as painful as it gets. Brilliant writting.
I've seen the ship be called Stern before. It's german for "star"
That's beautiful and suits them ❤
that "fark" moment killed me.🤣🤣
That came out of nowhere
"That just made me ill...violently " 😂
When I read this chapter, I was giggling like a school girl then distraught at the tragedy that's just occurred.
Btw, if you go back to episode 1, Frieren checks out the ring after Himmels funeral. It's at 16:28 if anyone is interested
your reaction made me cry more than normal when watching this scene.
heart-breaking realizations this episode. It was such a beautiful moment though, Frieren will have that memory forever.
Been waiting all day for frieren 😊❤
I love how you both were demanding that Himmel propose and he listened IMMEDIATELY! No words spoken and Himmel still cemented himself in Frieren’s heart almost a century later. A tragic hero but still the GOAT
ive been waiting for you guys to reach this episode. possibly the most romantic scene in an animated show ever. truly poetic!
lol love her reaction when she said for himmel to get down on one knee and he actually did.
Himmel really remenber me Jyraia
"I love a woman... but I won't force her to love me! I will surround her with my love while I pray and wish for her happiness."
This one was so emotional.
Thank you for sharing the pain. Awesome vid
Oh .. I cried again
there's some parallel's ive drawn between frieren and mob -- they're bought very powerful characters whose goal doesnt rest with their power/ability, but their inability to express emotions and relate to others. frieren's whole journey here really seems to be to understand what the "mere 10 years" journey she took with the Hero's Party actually meant to her. yes in her perspective it's like a few months passing by, but she built memories and relationships that were dear to her, even more so now that she's building even more relationships with her new party and looking back at those memories in a new light.
himmel's reaction when he saw the lotus bud ring (and a bud, not a blooming lotus flower like Fern's) tells me he knew *exactly* what the ring meant. but his lifespan and frieren's are so disparate. and with frieren they way she was then, he understood that she either could never form attraction to him in the first place, or never within his lifetime for them to actually have a life together. even now frieren doesn't seem to really understand what she felt for himmel either. the journey to know herself is such a fantastic throughline along with the traditional fantasy adventure
Also remember Frieren was alone for prob over 1000 years not only is it thet maybe elves struggle to make connections but Solitude for that long has a large factor to it as well
