Why do only married woman allow to sell in Ema Market ? Ema Market is possibly the oldest and largest woman-led market in Asia . Earlier, men usually were the breadwinner of the society but during the war against British and Manipur, men served as army to face the war. Thereby to run the family slowy women came out to earn for livelihood. Thus, the system continued and it became the symbol of women empowerment. 500 year old market. P.S: Subject to correction. Hi Mete, the face paint that u spoke about is called 'chandan tilak' in Hindi. In India, those who follow Hinduism apply tilak on their forehead with sandalwood paste or with something called kumkum or sindoor. So, wat u saw in Manipur is a tradition followed by the Manipuri Hindus. They apply sandalwood (or chandan) paste on their forehead and on the nose as part of their Hindu tradition. Also, bora as u rightly said is pakora in Hindi and fritters in English. The prickly/thorny and sea urchin like vegetable is called thaangjing in Manipuri, makhana in Hindi, and foxnut in English. And as u said u know wat aamla is, is called Heikru in Mainpuri, and Indian gooseberry of course in English. Sorry that u struggled with communication gap in d beautiful state of Manipur. Those who are well-versed in English and Hindi (be it older or young generation) would have explained u better about the things. But not bad, those who made an attempt to tell u wat u were asking really tried hard. Some were shy. But you could somehow understand a bit as to wat they said. Thats wat we enjoyed in d video. The video is good. Loved it!
It is a very good idea of you to explore north east specially manipur many people doesn't come here..Very underrated but you got to learn so many new things, the culture, food habits, languages that many people in the world don't know about. "Jantra" that you said looks like bullets are actually a container where sacred text woild be kept and then you will wear it as a necklace or wear it on your arm. The sacred text is there to protect you against demons and bad souls. Also laing with the sacred text a pice of "phanek" or woman's skirt will be kept, it is so because woman's wear protects us from demons, as woman's wear are mother's wear
Men of the Meitei ethnicity went to serve in the army during war. As a consequence, women had to support their households by cultivating their fields or weaving textiles and then selling the products on improvised markets. The improvised markets led to the formation of the Ima Keithel(Market).
Similar theory in Khasi society. Men went to war and many didn't come back so children take mother surname and women had to take care of property and became the matrilineal culture that it is today
Ima Keithel basically means ‘Mother’s Market’. In the early days there was a labor system in Manipur which forced all the male members of the Meitei community to work in other places or fight wars, leaving the women behind in the villages. So to support their household, the women took the responsibility in their own hands. They cultivated their paddy fields, weaved textiles and created products that they sold in improvised markets thus leading to the birth of Ima Keithel.
