Eromba is umami flavoured because of the fermented fish called "Ngari". Ngaris are small freshwater fishes that's fermented inside a large vessel for months anaerobically. You don't see them in eromba because its added like a seasoning in little amounts. It's a dish that takes time for people to get used to it. The best introduction to ngari although is a manipuri salad, singju or "mimi singju",a type of singju where instant noodles are added.
The world war 2 conquest was straight from an anime. There was a guy called Subhash Chandra Bose, he escaped house arrest, went straight to Germany, met Hitler and setup a "Free India Radio". Then he moved to Japan and negotiated with the Japanese to release all Indian POWs and arm them. Then he marched the liberated soldiers to retake India. He didn't manage to succeed but it was cool.
Yeah he is underartted many people talk about Mahatma Gandhi but I believe Subash Chandra Bose did more in my opinion unfortunately he past away when he was coming back from Japan if I remember correctly
If you want the real taste I suggest you visit a house, it will be different from the hotel. There are a lot of dishes to test. Thank you for visiting Manipur😇
I recommend you a Manipuri special for the next meal or visit in case you already left, kangsoi( a cuisine made from fresh seasonal veggies with smoked dry fishes) Every foreigners I've known so far like it.
Thanks Ben for your coverage of Manipur and its valiant warriors who gave their lives. The mainstream media hardly covers them and Manipur's beautiful region. 🙏
The dish next to sweet and sour isn't spinach it is made from chinese chives that's what the guy try to spill out but u heard it wrong it is a dish made mainly with chinese chives and we, the local called it as (maroi thongba) it is a must serve dishes in any vegetarian feast,it is called maroi thong bcoz of the ingredients i.e maroi means any types of chives and thongba means cooking and together we known as maroi thongba, you can add potato, ground nuts, bhori (local made lentils ball),fox nut, onion, garlic and other spices,u don't have to add all of them like optional but chives and bhori is a must and yeah the spices. And welcome to Manipur 😊
Really appreciate your work in describing and explaining in between, just a little information the dish in Luxmi Kitchen with a 'spinach?' is actually a dish called MAROI THONGBA (Maroi or Maroi nakuppi are Chinese Chives or Asian Chives),its prepare along with potatoes, fox nuts, etc...

Ben I'll take the veg thali as I'm a vegetarian. Been one for 13 years. I had a Thali for lunch or dinner for a good part of my 6 months in India 🇮🇳. Two of my favorite Indian veg dishes are Palak Paneer and Kashmiri Pulao. There are many others. The sweets! The sweets 🧁! Gulab Jamun, Rasmalai, Jalebi, Burfi, kheer and the Malapua (Pushkar) among others.
That dish "Soda with Peas" is probably "Ooti" a traditional cuisine. Originally that dish is made with ash water instead of using soda, not from any ash but from a certain type of ash. And the one that has been mentioned as Spinach is definitely wrong. It's Asian Chives Curry. Also that fish intestine curry is not just the intestine, it also has the fish head in the curry. Hope you enjoy the foods and had a great time in Manipur.

They didn't tell you how to eat with the rice, that's there faults. You must taste all the dishes with the rice, only then you will know the flavors..
Plate and plating apart, some Manipuri food items are eaten in order... But you did ok.
Fish intestines, very unique! But bones? In intestines? Perhaps a misunderstanding.
