(Why coolie wala and not the paan wala or the Dabba wala?)
"Because when you go to the Bombay train station you see coolies lined up smoking bidi and they are sitting in a row, there is very good enmity between them, no fighting between them, so organized, all earnings are same, the way they sit with white dhoti, pajamas...it looks very fascinating. It's a beautiful visual Image. So why not show the life of a coolie. So why not show the life of a coolie wala. People have shown rickshaw walas, party walas ..Chai wala...so why not coolies? I remember in Delhi, the theatre had to keep compulsory show early morning only for coolies at 7 in the morning"

Manmohan Desai shows how deep understanding he had of film business and people's pulse. Desai is also correct when he says that 'Naseeb' was the best of his lots. The movie had so many novel ideas, well executed and presented.
Manmohan Desai, not many people from the current generation know, was an avid cricket buff. If he was alive today, he would have easily owned an IPL team and would have easily been an active cricket team owner.
....Well said...!!...if dear man ji(MKD Sir)were alive today he woud have been winning team owner of an IPL franchise....in an old interview, v can see him actually playing cricket in his street near his home at khetwadi....n this was located in the upper middle suburbs of mumbai during his era(70 80 90)...he was crazy cricket fan n n-joyed cricket with his family n neighbours.....one of most down to earth legend film maker in the film frarernity....amongst gen. next(sp '90s) dear david dhawan sir is believed to be inspired by dear manji in most of his blockbusters....💕....

True, naushad and shankar jaikishan are best music composers till date. they had have great sense of melody also they knew cinema very well. I agree with Mr Desai, yes Mard was a real good film, but the team of Desai and Laxmikant Pyarelal was just pure gold, they were a magical combination. Anu Malik has composed some good songs but his music pales with LP, and that shows in his later films, the music was never up to it. And as Mr Desai says that the great male singers, Mukesh, Mohd Rafi and Kishore Kumar sadly are no longer with us, a very sad loss. Change has to happen but it's never necessarily for the best.
His work in Aa Gale Lag Ja, Naseeb, Coolie and Amar Akbar Anthony was superb but i seriously can't stand Ganga Jamuna Saraswati

I think that the perception was manmohan Desai made movies for the masses (which he did) so he was someway lesser. The line of questioning also was similar. But over time people have come to realise the shear genius of the man. I believe if such an interview was taken of him today, he would be calmer, wouldn't have to talk like he has prove himself, like he has to in this interview. Clearly the man was assured in his genius and brilliant work, only the stupid journalists and perception hadn't come around to it.
Nevertheless he is answering all the questions with utter humility. He's just awesome. Especially the singing part is just Gold.

manoj puthran It's just a sign of changing times. What worked back then won't necessarily work today. I remember a very poignant interview of Rishi Kapoor, when speaking of Manmohan Desai's films, where he said audiences back then were much more accepting, no matter how illogical or repetitive the plots were, audiences lapped it up.

I don't think Desai was in depression. He was full of life, as is reflected in the video. The best thing that comes to mind is that he slipped and fell from the height. He never regained consciousness after hitting the ground, so people could not know. In all probability, his death was an unfortunate accident.

Manmohan Desai was people’s director. He had the understanding of what the audience wanted. And he managed to provide them for decades. Most of his work was appreciated and then his association with Amitabh became a celebrated combination. His last 3 films failed miserably at the box office in spite of having Amitabh in 2 of them. He lost the plot as the audience had changed by then. Manmohan Desai would always be celebrated for the Indian diversity he showcased through his films. Film industry solely miss creators like him who never spread hate instead he was a great advocate of unity and inclusion.
