I have no choice but to do a low buy year as I'm in my second year of paying off my debt. I'm still super motivated and it actually doesn't really bother me now when I have to say no to things - as long as my son gets to do things then I'm happy

I carry forward any over/under spend to the next month. Especially for food. This means I have enough to not worry about Christmas food. I also don't adjust budget amounts until I have at least 3 months data so I can see the average I spend per month.

Well done, Nicola! It looks like you are on the right track. Congratulations!!
I was quite successful as well, although I need to work more on my food budget... For a single person, I definitely spend too much 😐 I had 17 no spend days in total, 10 days of green light purchases which are grocery runs (as I mentioned before, I walk to shops so I buy food in smaller batches a few times a week) and 4 orange light purchases, which were mostly snacks for work. I have another win for January as well! Instead of going to the hairdresser for a much needed hair cut, I bought a set of hair scissors and a pair of thinning scissors from Amazon for about £12 (paid with gift vouchers that I already had). I followed a tutorial on RUclips and gave myself a haircut for the first time in my life! It took me about half an hour, but I saved myself a trip to town and a £35 for the cut! I am very chuffed with myself ;)

I put 102 pounds towards gas per month, i split it into two parts.
I look at gas prices at the beginning of the month calculate a tank of gas
Combine multiple trips into one, stay at home whenever possible
If you don't have more cash you can't go over a budget set a mount

Well done on your NSD target. I keep my grocery budget the same, regardless if I underspend. I then keep that cash in my wallet and stock up my pantry and freezer when I see offers or yellow stickers, without going over budget. I had a PSD (planned-spend-day!) in January as I’ve been saving up for the sales. I just purchased a new tall storage cupboard - IKEA Billy with doors to store firewood kindling. It’s the perfect size for a small corner in my living room, and replaces a row of 3 x fold up laundry hampers temporarily used as cheap storage. The cupboard takes up less floor space and made the living room feel less cramped, and the laundry hampers have moved to bedrooms to tidy up there. Win-win!

I would carry on as you are doing until the beginning of April (new financial year). I would then allow a little bit more for essential categories where you can see you are struggling. I’d adjust the figures by about £50-£60 then you should still have a little leeway and a bit of positivity in your budget which we all need. It’s so depressing if we are short of money every month but a little buffer will keep your spirits high. Well done on the no spends, that is amazing. Mine was 20 but I’m pleased with that as it was my aim and I don’t count direct debit days as no spends so the total could be higher.

continue with the same budget and the feeling when you have salvaged money at the end of the month with freedom to use that money to pay off something, buy something you need or dont need or have some fun (your choice) or even half and half.......that is your reward...good luck

Well done Nicola. I managed 27 days. Coffee was the culprit! The money I saved I've split up for savings & an emergency fund. Doing the same February. New flask also so less coffees. 😊 ☕️. Take care

For my budget I look at it on an annual basis....last month I spent nothing on Dog food. This month £38.
So i put a set amount in each category say £40 a month and keep it rolling over until the end of the year. Some months i go over and some under but the months i go over i have money in the pot from previous months.
If there is any left in each category at the end of the year, i either reallocate into my emergency fund or leave a starting balance to give a category a headstart.
I find overbudgeting a category means that i am rarely left in a deficit, and it is much less stressful.
I wouldnt lower your budget and i might increase the pets one to £40 a month and roll it over so that when you get to the cats medicine it doesnt feel like you have to take it all out of that months wage x

Let the budget run for a few months to see if you're regularly going under budget - if so then adjust the budget. Any extra should go to building your emergency fund and then to overpaying on debt.
    Good luck!

Well done to you. I would keep amounts the same, gives a little wiggle room and slightly less stress. Plus as you flick through your book and see more green highlights may give a mental boost when you do face those tough month's, a reminder of your achievements. Appart from groceries i set myself a set amount of what could be spent if something came up for the month (£40) for those things that catch you out which i used £12 but I went over my target grocery budget but was still under my usual spend on groceries. Still a savings win but a mixed bag of results. Will carry on into February, as the saying goes ..... Every little helps.

No spend January started well for me but then life got in the way. Having a family member very unwell in hospital for a couple of weeks meant the no spend went out the window. I’m trying for a low spend feb.

  • @mjax8614
    @mjax8614 6 дней назад

Thanks for this, and also for your planner. I had £88 left over, but I'm not going to change my budget, rather I'm going to keep a record of it as a running total in case I need to spend it in one of my budget categories later in the year. I had that much left over because I have two budget reckoning days! The first was part way through January and relates to actual bank balances - I knew I hadn't saved enough for Christmas (household disruption in Jan- Feb 2024 meant I couldn't start my Christmas Savings door chart), so I was trying to spend as little as possible during the first week of January so my bank balance didn't look too bad. Then I have another reckoning at the end of the month based on your planner , and that is my written account of what I've spent. So I tried to spend very little the last week of the month as well, partly to put something in the Christmas 2025 fund but also as practice for when some of my direct debits go up in April. I've had some interesting meals to use up what's in...some I won't be making again! And I suppose eventually I'll run out of food-to-be-used-up.

  • @cha97michelle

Leave yourself the wiggle room keeping the higher amounts. It will give you a nice mental boost every time you can beat it and move that money somewhere else and remove stress on months when you can't help but spend it. I think it gamifies it a bit which helps to stick to it overall. Constantly feeling like its a struggle will make you feel terrible.

I think your food budget should remain the same. If you have extra maybe you could save it in another envelope. Look at what’s in there every 6 months and decide then what to do with it. If you owe on a credit card you should show the repayment in its own category. I don’t think you should disclose the amount owed though. Also if you do have extra save it for your hardest months. Just my thoughts. I think you should do whatever works for Nicola❤

I would look very carefully at where that 'leftover' money went. If you've underspent then you should have that money left. If it isn't in your account I would look carefully at where that money has gone, has it gone in things which need to be added to your budget? Or, has it gone on fluff, that stuff where it has gone and you don't know where. You've done well to come in so low on food but that might mean you need more next month. I wouldn't touch your figures for now. Maybe review after three months xx
