Even the Saudis laughed them out the convention. They couldn't even develop their own engines without piggy backing off the Russians FFS. Neither can they build semi conductors. Wang Haifeng stated his idea of the J-36 in one of his public paper. He mentioned about highly integrated propulsion/power system with the fuselage, and said the J-36 will be a megawatt-power(yes, an entire fking megawatt) platform to support highly advanced and sophisticated avionic system. This is exactly the reason why the J-36 is a trijet - they need an extra engine to powered all these thing.
    Also, the J-36 will have extreme range and decent supercruise abilities, and therefore became another reason to have a third engine - pretty counter-intuitive, but a three-engine jet could be more fuel efficient than a twin-engine when it comes to supercruise, since at high alttitude the unit fuel consumption could rise as the engine's thrust level rises, and a three-engine design will have each engine running on lower power setting when in cruising, therefore less fuel consumption in total. Wang's idea is "fuel efficiency comes ahead of thrust", since if you have an underpowered yet efficient engine, all you loss is just a few tens of knots of your maximum speed and a few hundred feet of your celling, which is not that important if you're a very stealthy aircraft that focused on BVR engagement only. A gas-guzzler yet powerful engine, however, could bring you better maneuverability, but will also make you have to adding tens of tons of fuel into your plane, just to met your combat radius requirement.

      I think the current trend is to rely on stealth more and build larger aircraft as the engagement distances have increased. If your not planning in getting into a dogfight, you can build an aircraft thats more interceptor than fighter. Also with stealth aircraft being much more expensive your going to have less of them and they will need to cover more distance. Also airbases are static and likely your going to base your expensive planes deep within your territory to help defend against drone strikes. In the MIG-35 has performed better than its counterpart the SU-27 in the Ukraine war. The F-35s smaller size is because it needs to take off, land and fit on an aircraft carrier.

      No ulterior motives here, but I just kind of want to point out that the idea has been used already in the PLA's hypersonic drone series 'MD-XX', for instance the MD-19 and the MD-22. MD stands for ‘鸣镝’, (Mingdi)(which means exactly 'whistling arrow'), and this literally is the name of an actual type of arrow used in ancient combat. So it isn't a kite, I guess. And the arrow in question is actually, according to Wiki, often made from a hollow metal tube instead of from bamboo.

    I’d love to see the American response to this aircraft too, but honestly, I’m not as optimistic about it as I used to be. Those new ICBMs are somehow so expensive that the Air Force is shelving the NGAD program, and now the Navy is trying to manage expectations about what their next 'NGAD' fighter will actually be capable of.
    The only thing I’m confident in right now is the government and military’s ability to cancel or cut back on crucial purchases while throwing ridiculous amounts of money at bases we don’t need and outdated weapon systems that are too politically tied up to scrap. And let’s not forget-they still can’t even pass an audit! They don’t even know where a good chunk of their money is going!
    They lucked out when they cut the F-22 order short, but I really hope they’re not looking at that as proof they can repeat the same mistake. The world is a much different place now, and we’ve got plenty of adversaries just waiting for us to slip up and take our eyes off of the goal.

    • @baronvonslambert
      @baronvonslambert День назад +9

      NGAD might be getting shelved, but the Navy's 6th gen program seems to be going great and basically every fighting craft in the Air Force fleet is getting some much needed upgrades, from the B-52 all the way to the F-22. Add in the armament programs and the lack of a sixth gen fighter for the Air Force isn't much of an issue for any of the potential conflicts on the horizon.
      I'd rather we spend on the ICBMs over NGAD, those Minutemen are getting ancient and continued maintenance is unsustainable.

    • @autumnberend828
      @autumnberend828 День назад +1

      Are you talking about the money specifically for the military the reason why there's a good number of money that's not known where it's going to specifically because it's going to blacklisted stuff. As in things are not going to tell you what they're using it on, like a secret playing they're working on like the sr-71, granted I'm not sure specifically what you're referring to on that point.
      As for the 6th gen being worked on, it's still being done, especially for the navy, as for the Air Force I mean it's not that necessarily a big deal since you could potentially do it much cheaper by just upgrading the F-22 which is still a really great plain as it is, the big complaint with it is just that it's expensive. Expensive and hasn't been really used, but there's a reason for that since there's really hasn't been a need for it yet. Of course, if there were to be some kind of war like with China or Russia where we would need to use it, then you'd find that being far more justified.
      That doesn't mean they're not still working on it, they still will be working on especially Lockheed and I would say Boeing but who cares about them.
      It's not like they stopped production in making this plane was supposed to be at all.

    • @julians7268
      @julians7268 День назад +6

      @autumnberend828 The blacklists don’t even scratch the surface when it comes to the missing funds in the DoD.
      As for the F-22, I totally agree-it’s an incredible aircraft! But cutting production so early really put us in a tough spot. These upgrades are great, sure, but airframes have their limits, and we can’t just make more Raptors. If a major war breaks out, any losses in combat are permanent, and we wouldn’t be able to replace them.
      The NGAD situation is just wild. They were so far into the process-manufacturers already narrowed down based on specific metrics-and now they’re like, "Uh, yeah, can you just strip out all the expensive cutting-edge stuff and make it more affordable with tried-and-true tech?" I get wanting to save money, and Ukraine has definitely shown we need to rethink how war is fought. But at the same time, you don’t want to gamble with untested tech or risk falling behind.

    • @autumnberend828
      @autumnberend828 День назад +2

      @julians7268 in all fairness, the idea of this being a potential drone playing with its own drone swarm was a pretty damn ambitious idea to begin with. I mean I get where it's going, but I can already tell right away that's going to be extraordinarily expensive and me wondering if it was really worth it in the end. I feel like you could just make a base drone swarm with that instead of a whole thing that can host a person or by itself.
      I think the fact that the Air Force stopped looking into it so much whereas the Navy did not is not necessarily a bad thing considering most planes are flown by the navy, and it's also supposed to be an air dominance which would be right up their alley, although the Air Force could utilize them too but I don't think it's nearly as important as the Navy. But honestly who knows I'm not in their meetings. I just want a satellite that shoots lasers. Give me a death star and I'll find you for a lifetime.

    • @julians7268
      @julians7268 День назад +3

      @baronvonslambert for that much money, are the ICBMs really even necessary? I understand their purpose, but it just seems like a huge waste to me. They could just lie and say they are functional and who ever decides a preemptive strike is still going to have to hit those silos just to be safe. Job done. Ballistic submarines carry far more firepower, that has a much quicker time to target, and is a lot more survivable.
      Im not arguing with you. People far smarter than I believe the ICBMs are critical so they very well could be, but for that price it's just ridiculous. I mean, when yoy look at the capabilities they are not even much more capable than the minutemen 3's!
      The most recent figures are just over $140.9 billion!!! Sentinel was pitched to the Army with a price tag of $95.3 billion, which ballooned by 81%!
      Hell, the TOTAL PROJECTED COST of the entire Columbia-class submarine fleet of 12 ballistic missile submarines is only projected to be $130 billion. Compare that to the $140.9 billion for 400 individual, stationary, ICBMs with a limit of 3 MIRVS per missile. The Navy's Trident II can deploy 8 MIRVS and it only costs $30 million! On the other hand the Sentinel will cost (so far) $100 million per missile and carry less payload to target.
      I dont know... I just don't feel like making the NGAD less capable should be the price for this. I like the B-21 Raider too, but it is no replacement for a fighter. Not unless these CAAs make some incredible leap in capability and can fly along with it and out in front of it. But... I guess we shall see.

    The logical ideal design for a launch platform for China’s advanced missiles. PL17 air to air missiles and probably an upgraded one in a few years. YJ12 anti ship missile and possibly a YJ21 anti ship missile.

    • @twood2032
      @twood2032 День назад +11

      I completely agree with your perspective. The future of aerial combat and air superiority will be dominated by beyond visual range engagements, which necessitates the use of extreme long-range air-to-air missiles like the PL-17, R-37M, and AIM-260 JATM. To maintain full stealth capabilities, 6th-generation fighter jets will require large internal weapon bays capable of carrying multiple missiles. I’ve heard some people refer to it as the JH-36, likely because its design resembles a bomber. However, this viewpoint seems rooted in 20th century aerial combat paradigms, which no longer apply to the advanced, stealth focused, and beyond visual range driven nature of modern warfare.

    • @douginorlando6260
      @douginorlando6260 День назад +3

      @ instead of thinking of it as 6th generation, it deserves its own category just like bomber and fighter. Aircraft designed to best launch stand-off weapons. Not just a missile truck like a converted transport aircraft, but designed for speed, range, stealth, large internal weapon bay, altitude, and ability to launch missiles at high altitude & velocity to maximize their range. No need to compromise the design for high g maneuvers, not excellent pilot visibility from a bubble cockpit canopy, not a huge flight envelope.
      A typical scenario could be patrol. If a ship or task force has been detected by satellite, then two manned J36 could fly together with 6 stripped down J36 drones that do not require their own sensors, cockpit, avionics. (they don’t need it because they will be controlled by the manned J36 aircraft nearby). The J36 drones could each launch YJ21 missiles aimed at all the Aegis radar ships to blind the task force. H6 bombers could then launch a large number of YJ21 at every ship in the task force without being detected. J20 aircraft 50 or 150 miles back could provide strong jamming to further hide the J36 if necessary while they make their escape. In case aircraft were chasing the escaping J36, the J20 fighters could also provide defense as the J36 return home.

    The J36 and J50 were not separate breakthroughs, but the result of the overall progress of China's industry. To put it simply, it is much easier for China to design and manufacture equipment than others. Even if the United States can design a more advanced platform, China can immediately learn from it and manufacture an even more advanced one, because China has a more comprehensive and efficient industry that can afford it. This is also the fundamental reason why the Soviet Union couldn't keep up with the US. Instead of what many American believe, that because the Soviets made an advanced plane, so the indomitable Americans made the F16. It was not like that at all, it was just easier for the US to do things because of the sound industry in the US. It's the difference in industrial capacity, but this time the United States is the Soviet Union.

      That’s a good one. Their equipment is junk. No countries in the world begging China to sell them their highest tech planes. These supposed 6th generation planes are like all their other tech, from stolen schematics from other countries programs. Everyone’s talking about China now. “They have a 6th gen before the US.” This is what they wanted. With the history of American aviation with all the successful cutting edge aircraft programs and massive funding you honestly think China would somehow leapfrog ahead? Gtfoh. China is a strong military and shouldn’t be underestimated but to think they are gonna lead the US in aviation is laughable

    The West has sixth generation aircraft in development, a total of four different programs, and several prototypes have apparently flown years ago for the USAF. There’s no indication that China is ahead in development, and whether any of the sixth generation programs actually produce something sufficiently revolutionary to qualify as next generation is for posterity to decide.

      You are saying there's no indication yet they have a flying prototype unlike the US. Historically speaking, yes, they've always struggled before, but nothing says that they can't catch up and surpass the west. And to my understanding it is going to happen eventually. The only question is when, will it be in 10 - 20 or 30 years. But by the looks of it it would happen earlier than everyone expects.

      @@jonthepolarbear Yeah. In my life I've seen an infinite amount of prototypes. That didn't actually come to fruition and weren't eventually taped even. Even those that did, I don't know a single one that had finished and delivered on it's original promised numbers ( F22 promise of close to 1k, only 200 built. B2 promise of 200 only 20 delivered etc)... same thing with SR71 many promises and not so much deliveries and a quick retirement... same with the F117. So having a great project on paper is one thing. Actually delivering it and it entering service and serving for a long time is another... It's hard to actually make a craft that would last a long time and be relevant, on top of actually building it and everything working for it...

    There is a reason three-engine airplanes have gone the way of the Dodo - they historically were a way to overcome lack of suitably powerful (or reliable) engines, but as engines improved it became easier to use two bigger main engines rather that have the hassle of handling a third one, with its specific intake, air duct and maintenance access route (more so as, in this plane, said air duct is in the way of internal fuel and weapon bays).
    So, it is nice to look at, but I helieve that it is just something like a tech demonstrator, built to test the general architecture, the fly by wire software and controls and maybe radar absorbing techniques beyond simple coating materials using available engines.
    Meanwhile, I suppose someone in the Chinese jet industry must be working on the engines for what will be the actual plane.
