As an Eagles supporter, that game made me feel a whole range of emotions. The disappointment of majority of the 1st quarter, relief when they got back into the game, anxiety as you watched the clock tick down and the elation as the siren went.
It was my daughter's 9th birthday that day and we had a grand final party to celebrate. To this day she will say that, that win is the greatest present ever.
The best part for me, is that since the grand final, we have seen some of the Eagles players that played in that win and my daughter has thanked them for making her birthday the best ever. Their reactions of joy when they see how much it means to their fans is brilliant.

When you do pick a team to support, in Australia we say "barrack" when Americans would say "root". So a common question at, say, a BBQ, or when you're talking to a new work colleague etc., might be "Who do you barrack for?" Just a bit of random lingo to help your Aussie acclimatisation. 😊
5:32 Yes, this is a fair bump. A great "hip 'n' shoulder".
7:47 Being down by 12 at half time is not bad. But the Pies got a few goals early, and, while the Eagles had clawed it back and weren't far down, Collingwood was setting the pace. So the Eagles were holding on a bit at this stage, with the Pies threatening to blow the game open. Credit to West Coast for sticking at it all day. In other Grand Finals teams have been over run in these sort of situations.
11:50 Andrew Gaff full on decked another player and broke his jaw (needed surgery etc). Gaff got a very lengthy suspension.

It's been said a couple of times, but 12 points at half time is nothing. You can come back from that within the first minute of the second half. Leigh Matthews (one of the best all time players and coaches) has a saying: as long as there are more minutes remaining in the game than there are goals difference, you're still a chance (if you're 4 goals down with 5 minutes left, don't panic). For example, my team, Hawthorn, was 39 points down at half time in Round 1 and came back to win (that was a huge comeback, but it should help put 12 points into perspective).

Down by 12 isn't great. It was a hot close game. 12 points in a tight game like that could be huge. But after being behind by 29 it's a significant reply by the coasters.

    Gday Nick
Great reaction and interesting insights to the game.
People have covered your question about the 12 point lead but not your point about a perceived somber mood.
What you have pointed out is a cultural difference. American sports generally have a ‘hype’ mode which is normal for players to get around each other and hype each other up.
Aussie sports don’t have the same level of ‘hype’.... yes we do have it but it’s not as intense as in the USA.
Both sides at half time are not sad or depressed (as you noted) but are switched on and understand the game is in the balance.
I went to the West Coast v Port Adelaide game here in Perth last night and Liam Ryan took an absolute screamer!! Check that out please
Love your reacts mate. Keep em coming!

    Great reaction, Nick
The story about Gaffy (Andrew Gaff) was that he was given an 8 game ban after round 20 (fourth last match of the regular season) for sucker punching Andrew Brayshaw from the Fremantle Dockers and breaking his jaw. Hence Dom Sheed's call up, and the rest is history.

Being down by 12 at half time is not much at all. When you’re 5 goals down (30 points) at half time it’s a bit of a stretch, although there’s been plenty of come backs from being 30+ down at the half.
It’s all about getting that momentum going

No, 12 points is nothing in the AFL. You could be down by 60 points at halftime and still come back at win, so it's not really the margin that the coaches are worried about. The thing they'd be worried about is momentum, Eagles scored 4 of the last 5 goals so they'd be happy about their momentum going into the 2nd half, where the Pies were losing momentum. Halftime in a game means nothing really though, you just can't really lose it in the 3rd quarter because then you're in much deeper trouble.

Down by 12 when your two best players are of injured, Ryan and Sheed others are Kids from the Bush, 1st big Game they come from opposite side of Country and the Bush in WA, PIEs are on their home Turf, so yep 12 down would feel like a huge gap, My Team go Eagles.

Hey Nick have you been able to watch any games of footy yet or even a games highlights video?
Also in terms of comebacks anything less than a 30 points margin before the 4th quarter is usually seen as pretty easily doable, but once it's in the 4th anything over 4 goals (24 points) gets pretty tough.
Because AFL is all about momentum, there's often big momentum swings during games between teams that can happen at any point. A saying that supporters will usually have when their team's down in the last quarter is "a goal a minute". If there is more left minutes in the game then goals needed to win there's usually still hope. Even if it's generally unlikely to happen in a game.

Apparently the AFL site itself puts full replays up 24 hours after each game now, so it easy to see games now than it used to be. So if cannot see one live should take advantage of the replays and try to watch a game without knowing result beforehand.
Watching a game live from USA can not be easy but the day games here are night time there so should be able to watch a game live on a Friday or Saturday night his time. Would have been easier before the clocks changed for daylight saving, so hopefully he saw one before that has happened. Swans v Tigers today would have been ideal time to see a game live. Carlton and Fremantle play tomorrow which after clocks change go might start 9-20 pm or 10-20 pm Nick's time on a Saturday night depending on if their clocks gone forward an hour recently.

Go Giants, Go Red Sox. Been a fan of these two teams since 1986 when I was 18. Not sure if you have already reacted to the 2005 Swans. But their story is amazing. 1st premiership in 72 years. 4 point win over the Eagles. The two teams would again play the grand final in 2006! The result would be a 1 point win to the Eagles. The commentary at the end of the 2006 “who knew the sequel would be as good as the original” summed it up perfectly. In the mid 90s the Swans were so bad they lost 26 games straight. From 1996 till 2018 they would play finals 22 out of 25 years. Playing in 6 grand finals over this period. Winning in 2005 and 2012. Losing in 1996, 2006, 2014 and 2016. They have started 2021 with 4 straight wins beating two of last years top four on their home grounds. Including Dusty and his tigers. Good start but still 18 games to go.

12 points (2 goals) is not a big lead . Simmo (eagles coach) is drumming into the guys that even though they got 12 points less in the half, they have the momentum . The effort to come back from 4 goals down in the first would be huge , yet they were still 2 goals down . I think he was saying , it might take the whole game but we have done it before , we will do it again

    • @Lnch4ALion
      @Lnch4ALion 3 года назад

A 2 goal lead in a grand final is "more" than a 2 goal lead in a normal game for sure. In 2015 the eagles got blown out in the grand final .

One of the great Grand Finals. Be good for you to see the highlights of the game. 12 points even at the 20 minute mark of the last quarter of a GP isn’t much. A 40 point advantage at half time is hard to peg back. 30 points at 3/4 time is the same.
95% of Australia celebrated this win. Collingwood is the most hated team in the comp. Support one of the non Victorian teams. Sydney,GWS,Brisbane,Gold Coast,Adelaide,Port Adelaide,West Coast. Hey WC have a fairly solid side in the Eagles so might like to support them. Remember we don’t root for them here. There’s only one meaning for that word here!
There was a great game last evening between Brisbane and Collingwood last night. Brisbane kicked the winning goal after the siren.
Watch the highlights Round 3. Some great long booming kicks for goals. High marks.
