Liverpool kicked off their pre-season tour of the United States by beating Real Betis 1-0.
Dominik Szoboszlai's first-half goal ensured the Reds got the Arne Slot era off to the perfect start in winning a mostly scrappy game in Pittsburgh.
But there was plenty to like about the performance, according to Reds reporter David Lynch.

Promising signs. Defence questionable
Almost brighton like in playing into thr press during build up, baiting it and then playing a ball out to find space. Might be risky doing that at epl level.
It was decent, lets see how it looks against Arsenal and Man United, one thing I like so far is that we havent conceded many chances.
Given the amount of squad we will have on the pitch instead of first team player, it may be too early to judge how we play against these next two.
OK start, a lot of turnovers and missed passes but you saw the intentions of how we want to play and it was expected with both a new system and first game of preseason.... the only thing that worried me was how bad Endo was and I have really defended him when people had a go for him before but in this game there was not much about his performance I could defend.
i think quansah , bradley and nyoni stood out . i really like that formation 2-4-4 build up from the back with the 2 number 10s being the outball by finding space in the half space , out of posession the two number 10s elliot and szoboslai (both looked good in this system) leading the pressing with the two wingers staying wide and everyone else going man for man in a kind of 4-2-4 high press looked really good and that turned into a 4-5-1 when they had comfortable posession with salah 1 on 1 out wide right
Thought sepp looked pretty good defensively, not sure the CBS and CMS really understand the quick passing they are supposed to be playing but I presume with Mac coming back he will help that massively
Wouldn’t delve to deep into tactics as this will not be a system we play in the season
@@paddyballer2512 fair point and going by arne interview you are correct , but i think the positional play is what we may see , its just the striker will be dropping into the other no 10 . i am not sure we have a striker who fits that while we do have a few players that can play that double no 10
I’ve been excited about Nyoni ever since I watched some his clips from the academy last season this kid can do it all
Need time to grow physically but looks very, very good technically.

Superb analyzes. I am really exited about this Arne Slot project. He comes across as very clear and strong in the interviews.

I only saw 2nd half , and being a preseason game i don't expect a lot and to me its more of how are the young players developing , and that is what looks very positive. Nyoni the biggest one his vision and passing was very high standard. What was also a positive was when the younger players did come on Real Betis didnt take control of the game we still made the play and controlled the possession . Sepp VDB looked very good at the back , hope he now stays .
How do you know that Sepp was very good at the back if you only watched the second half where he played 25mins? The first half was where it all happened. VDB was shakey at times. He's still away from truly competing for a spot at CB.

@@abstraqtphilosophy7357Think it was a case of feeling the pressure. He made early errors by given suicide passes from Endo. He grew I'm confidence, though could see a doubt as to whether he has 90 minutes in Premier. Arsenal will be his test. 👋
@@abstraqtphilosophy7357 Well for a start he didn't go off at half time so i saw about 25 mins and as far as i was concerned he looked good , i also prefaced my comments saying it was a preseason game and doesn't mean a lot probably the only game that means anything in preseason is the last one before the first day of the season.
Interesting hearing Slot saying that he considers Elliot + Szobolai to be No.10s. As for Trey Nyoni - he must have been watching some Xabi Alonso pass master videos!!
Or maybe that was just how he used them, since he doesn't have any strikers on this preseason tour.
Szbo said himself he is an 8 but during the game he acted as a 6 and a 10 as did Elliot and yeah your right that system was only played because of no striker but I was hoping he had given carvalho a go at CF for a couple of knock ins@@Gadeberg90

@@denzel1989 Last I checked they play multiple positions and can't remember the last time we played with a 10. Yesterday Slot basically played a 4-2-4 strikerless formation. I don't know if you thought I was saying that they can't play as 10's cause off course they can. Most players are quite versatile Dom started as a CM and Elliot started as a right winger.

Surprised not more made of Sepp's performance. Thought he looked solid and confident on the ball. Definitely worth him sticking around imo.
Surprised by Blair's game with his back to the goal, people won't talk much about it but it's an extremly difficult role and he was surprisingly really good in it. Kept some good ball under pressure and managed to find players wide quite a few times.
Fabinho was never that good technically, that was also his weakness and why he didn't start much for Brazil, he was okay but as soon as he played in smaller spaces, he mostly struggled.
Blair looked very strong didn’t he! Great to see him fit and looking in good nick because he’s struggled with injuries at times.
Good clear presentation. Pleasant to listen to. Pleased with the win btw.

Some of the football was a bit risky but Nyoni shined.🎉
I see playing out from the back being his style but I hope Arne Slot implements it well and make changes where applicable.
I agree with all of your take-outs David, so thanks for that. I would add -
1. We have a big problem at LB. I think we all knew Kostas has to go, and now Slot knows that. Worse, there is no way Robbo can play this style - his technique and control are just not up to it, and when you add that his defending is already sub-standard, we have a big problem. Beck will maybe be better than both but he is really a squad cover player (to replace Kostas) and is not the elite ball playing LB we need.
2. Van Den Berg - looked very good defensively (dominant in the air, quick and strong on the deck) but again, doubt he has the ball playing technique required for this style. It is now clear (tbh it was clear to me for the past 2 months) that we made a HUGE mistake by not going for Calafiori. He is perfect for this style, and could cover both LCB and LB slots until we get another in next year to go on the left with him. Criminal that we did not even compete for him. I fully appreciate Slot wanted to look at the players, but everyone knew we had a big issue to address in the left with no cover for Virg and no cover for Robbo just as he is beginning to wane. I hope to God we now get Ait Nouri as he would be perfect at LB, but still leaves an issue at LCB. But i guess with Virg we can get by for a while but it is a risk.
3. Endo will not fit. Bajcetic and Morton can both flourish in this but do we need another with more experience to go with Mac as a double pivot (Trent ? Bradley ? Or buy Zubamendi or Ederson ? Then keep Bajc and Morton as great cover options who can develop into the main men in 2-3 years).
4. Nyoni - we cannot let him out on loan. He needs to develop alongside the first team squad and get regular mins as a sub and cup games. He is perfect for this system - we just have to learn from Bajc, Bradley and Gordon and manage him carefully.
5. Mo looks a gonner and we have a real question at RW. Do we just go with youth and put Kaide Gordon and Doake in to challenge and share time with Mo or do we go for a Mo replacement now and let Doak and Gordon cover them ?
Can’t really say much about the other positions as all the top boys were missing, other than Ibou will struggle in this system. We should think about raising cash on him whilst he is still highly marketable. Maybe offer him as a swap for Anthony Gordon as they wanted a CB. Gomez can then focus on CB - he has the technique.
Great comment. I wouldn’t write Mo off just yet, though! That sharpness will come and he’s not helped that none of his fellow forwards are around to make space for him,
Mo as lost his first touch and it's been missing for a while now and for someone who will be tightly marked in games that's not good as was one of the big issues last season.@@davidlynchlfc

Might want to cool it a bit on the Nyoni hype. A couple of seasons ago it was Moton. Then Klopp put him in against Tottenham and he looked out of place. Not Moton’s fault. Klopp should’ve been more careful.
Hopefully Nyoni will come good for us in a couple of seasons.
I thought Moton looked a lot quicker and stronger than when we last saw him in a red kit.

Yeah, you’re right, definitely don’t want to go over the top with him. He has a lot of tools, but isn’t physically ready in reality. Still think he could sneak a few minutes in the cups this season, though, as the manager seems to really like him, and for good reason.

Sometimes you see a young player and you just know they're good enough to make the grade, I was lucky enough to see Fowler, Owen, Gerrard etc and moment they stepped on pitch you just knew there was a player there. I recall woodburn most recently, he didn't give those vibes. Quansah does, Bradley does, doak I'm 50/50 though all he lacks is game intelligence which can be coached to a point. Keep up good work. And let's keep our kids under wrapsfor now. They have enough pressure from outside sources already. Elliott has those vibes if only he had pace and another 6 inches( I bet his girlfriend says that too😂🤣)

Oh give me a break. 1 preseason game and he's already a star? You've forgotten his dismal second half of last season and his forgettable performance at the euros?
Meh, he took his goal well but technically he was atrocious as a midfielder, lost so many balls, failed so many passes.
It was good football to watch and, most interestingly to me, Betis seemed to have to work really hard (constantly) to keep their concentration on what was actually going on. Given that we didn't have our first choice forward line I think it's looking really promising for the coming season. It'll be good to see Diogo back in action with this in mind...

I like that they’re going to be more patient. It’ll allow the midfielders to have more impact going forward. That was definitely a weakness last season. I can see why Jones likes it a lot more.
This is really cool, as people said Arne is a mix of Guardiola and others, as long as our players have the teckers to manage we should have a really good team and hopefully they won't get injured as much from the heavy metal aspect of Jurgens era....should be interesting to see. I think we'll defo need some more and different players at the back and in midfield to make it work properly but fortunately we now have one of the best academies in the world and players will come to LFC as they will get a chance to play in the first team....YNWA!

I would give a different opinion on the style of CDM profile. If we're playing from the back, then BOTH pivots need to be ball players as teams will target the weaker ball player.....a bit like the Firmino led press....I dentify and target the weakest/least comfortable on the ball.
Can't believe you've not mentioned how narrow the fullbacks were. It was very condensed in the middle. However, it helped when we gave it away sloppily we had numbers around the ball. But that strategy of playing out I don't think will work in the Premier League... 🤷🏻♂️

I know its pre-season however it was same old same; we are not forceful in position enough. Our possessions are not bearing fruits and we are without ideas. Its obvious that we need to get in world class players immediately if we are going to challenge for a top 6 finish this season.

@@SimonParker-hv6uu okay. Came on as subs. Morton has really filled out, it's Bajcetic 1st run out, been missing near 16months, give him time, he will fulfill his promise no doubt. Morton I don't think is quite our level long term unfortunately , would love to be proven wrong but....

It looked good but against better teams we could let a lot in .. Brighton played nice footie but they got beat most times ..I still think Sala should be sold and robbo. Bring in a new fb and a new forward .. Will slob survive ? Not sure ..

All this talk about bringing players in....if this is half of what we've got, we don't really need anybody new at this stage. Just work on what we have and see how the new system works.....I'm looking forward to this.... BTW the youngsters look really good - a great inheritance from the Klopp era....

I think the way we were playing, we need a 6 that is good on the ball and press resistant. We can't have someone who the ball will bounce off them in those tight space. I think Liverpool is looking for a player in the mold of Frenkie de Jong.
Gravenberch was likened to de Jong by van Der varrt I believe

Nyoni has a very high ceiling. I'm looking forward to seeing a fresh Liverpool next season. Slot seems to rate Van Der Berg and a few other young lads.
I'd say we'll see a bit more of Bradley, Nyoni, Bacjetic, Doak and Blair next season. The door is still open so some others might shine.
There were multiple number 6s available last summer. They stuffed up.

I'm worried... Klopp got this squad to a 3rd but couldn't quite keep up with the top two towards the end. Are "we" or I should say the club expecting Arne to get even more out of that squad? We should've signed players already, I'm worried.

It's criminal that Liverpool has not tried to sign a proper DM. This team is crying out for someone like Zubimendi. For some reason, LFC are the only big club that does not take this position seriously. How can you bid 115m for Caicedo one season then get a temporary fix like Endo and then just pretend that you don't have a long-term problem in that role? FSG are making every excuse under the sun not to sign a a world-class DM . Arsenal has got Rice, and City has Rodri both are DM specialist in their prime who only play that role. This situation is pathetic.
They did take it seriously with Fabinho. But, unfortunately they didn't replace him.
