- Thanks for watching, just wanted to make a quick video on the new Lupin cgi film that's out now!
I don't own any of the clips used in this video (technically I have the Japanese bluRay, but I have no intention of saying I claim it) and have no plans to make monetary gain off of this. Enjoy, I'll be making more videos on a consistent basis.
This film was worth the risk of going outside to a theater after seven months.
Haha, yeah that's true! I'm debating if I want to see it in theaters first or on the steelbook, probably the latter, but eh I'll see. Either way, great film!

lupin is an incredibly big thing here in italy, it surprised me that it wasn’t as popular in the us, here when a movie comes out a dub is immediately ready, so if any of you don’t want to learn japanese you can always learn italian, we have amazing dubbers 😉
Yup, that's true! I've heard the Italian dub for a few Lupin episodes, I'm impressed even though I don't know the language, I still feel the energy of the characters!
This movie was a banger. I got some friends and drove all the way to a fancy Theater. Most of my friends haven’t watched lupin but enjoyed the hell out of the movie. We blasted the movies sound track on the way home. Great movie

I watched it, it was so slick, you were right everyone was so shiny and polished, only the plot was lacking a bit, but for first timer I think they will like it. Hoping to seeing a Lupin movie in cyberpunk futuristic era in my lifetime.
LOL, same. That would've happened at one point in time, but a futuristic Lupin the third show got canceled, and we ended up with Inspector Gadget instead....
Yes the animation is beautiful but the plot is more for children and it’s pretty simple as far as zany crime and puzzles go

*Risked it all to go see it in theaters.* The dub is immaculate. Props to Richard Epcar, (Jigen himself), for his directoral work. This definitely feels like a worthy successor to Cagliostro. Already preordering the Steelbook.
That sounds awesome! Glad you liked the film! I myself plan on getting the steelbook too. I am a physical disc kind of guy, but digital does have its benefits, storage wise and for the sake of easement between having a catalog of movies at your hands -- but for a movie like this, it's deserving to buy the limited edition. If this is a one-time kind of film treatment that we'll see for Lupin (that is, they don't make any more cgi films for a while) it's worth it.

@@SNKJay honestly, this movie is probably a better representation of what hollywood COULD do with the franchise than what they actually WOULD. Alita Battle Angel being the exception and not the rule, I can’t help but imagine that an American-made Lupin would probably LOOK a lot like this, but utterly fail to UNDERSTAND the character, putting way to much focus on a romance between him and Fujiko, and spend less money on getting a qualified director like Gunn or Waititi, and more on getting big names like Bill Hader and Nicholas Cage, as opposed to the cast we know and love.

Anime movies winning the theaters
This was actually my first Lupin movie and it was really damn entertaining. Lupin himself was fun as heck to be around as were his comrades, the story was nice, the animation was gorgeous, the only negative I really have is something I know couldn't have been easy for GKids to overcome and that's the lip syncing. Being a CGI film it's much more difficult to sync them up perfectly when they're made for a specific language. Still, it hardly mattered. Give it an A+/Hentai!
Yeah, I think the lip syncing wasn't all too great, but what GKids does is they purposely allow for this. From what I understand, they're fine with their actors not matching the lips, as long as they can convey their lines well and really reach the audience with their performance. The voice cast is marvelous, I guess it would be too much to ask for the original CGI animators to accomodate specifically for the english dub (as there are multiple dubs, like the Italian one, Phillipine one, etc, making that unrealistic) but I'm satisfied with what we got
Watched this movie two weeks ago and it's just incredible! The CG is so fluid and slick and dynamic, the English voice acting is on-point, and I really hope we get like 2 or 3 sequels from the same animation and production teams!

@@encapsulatio Good question. This is a bit subjective, but while I love the animation and find it beautiful, Pixar imo stands above most 3D animation studios. It's a subjective take, not really supported by facts, I just find Pixar animation to be more.... fluid? I still think the animation in this film is beautiful and is a hot contender against any pixar film in animation alone, but Pixar to me has a certain look I can't find in other animations. Idk if it's the lighting or the animation, or both, but I find it impeccable how well Pixar meshes their 3D animation techniques well, and can easily recognize it amongst other animations. Disney Animation Studios also has a certain shine to their animation, but Pixar to me is still at the top, for 3D animation. I'm not saying this film's animation is bad in any way, or that it's not quality. Just not Pixar, but that's okay. The animation in this film exceeds many 3D animations I've seen (especially from Illumination) it's insane how well this movie looks visually

I went to go see this movie twice, once for the English dub, and once for the English Sub, and I gotta say as a first time Lupin Viewer the English was more fun to watch.
Really! Interesting, I can't wait to see the dub!
I enjoyed the movie. I just started binge watch all 5 Lupin the 3rd anime on Crunchyroll.

film is great it has great animation and transition to 3d but the 3rd act feels short and kinda a meh, Koike's Lupin still my pick for the best Lupin of our modern times currently, i gotta say in my place lupin isnt popular that me and my friend were able to schedule the cinema for ourseles (like really pick the sched for it to be shown in the cinema)
My friend actually went to a theater (he lives in the states) and was one of the 2 people in the entire movie theater when he saw this haha. Koike's Lupin in the more serious and grim animated films are the best trio of films for me. Castle of Cagliostro I still watch in case I want my light-hearted Lupin, on the days I feel like it, but most of the time, yes, I prefer the darker tone
Saw this on Oct 18th 2020 in cinemas. In my opinion, one of the better films to watch in 2020.

Caught in on amazon, fantastic animation, the characters all translate very well to 3D and the sets are all modelled, shot and lit very interestingly - there isn't a boring shot in the whole movie. The story was paced a little funky at points one of the villains "deathbed redemptions" is dumb, and you do notice the dubbing alot more than in the 2d show because the fidelity on the facial animations is so clean, theres on point where the dub line is "see ya later" and you can clearly read "SYONARAH"! on lupins lips but for an indie release it gets a pass from me, though i would be down if disney fixed the dub somtime.
I really wish the plot and writing was on the same level of the animation
Yeah, admiteddly they weren't the same. The animaiton was enough to get me to like this, but the writing could've used some work. Nevertheless, it's definitely one of the better Lupin specials, idk if it's the best (not rlly) but it's not bad imo
Watching this in retrospect, I find it really funny that you mention that The First might be as iconic as Cagliostro.
Two years later, I see the Mystery of Mamo being discussed about as much as much. It really holds it's own when compared to Cagliostro - while being extremely unique.
The First echos a return to form for the Lupin series, but isn't able to get away from the shadow of its contemporaries because the movie plays it safe. Cagliostro and Mamo were able to hold up because they dared to break these characters out of their archetypal mold and create a story that goes beyond the establishment.
You're right on the money. The First played it pretty safe. I think it definitely brought some attention to the franchise, but it didn't go beyond what I was expecting. I figured playing it safe would still end up being hugely profitable. But yeah, that film can't hold a candle to Castle of Cagliostro and Mamo, they're both amazing
The First is really just another Lupin TV special with a 3D coat of paint... It might blow new viewers away, but once you get into the rhythm of Lupin, it's just another meh entry...
Major props to Doug Erholtz as Zenigata in this one. His Zeni in Part IV was a little bit iffy (then again, Part IV's production was hell), but he's been getting better and better and I'd say he nailed it this time.
I'd even say he rivals the red jacket Zeni, Dan Lorge in the Sillygata department
Part IV's production had troubles yeah, so I've heard. Great stuff though, I've heard the voice acting is good in the dub!

I missed the first 20 minutes of the dub showing but I still loved it. Yeah I was able to snag a pirate to fill myself in but it’s not the same not getting the whole thing until January, at least it had subtitles (even if they were sorta ass in some parts) Absolutely loved it though, still rewatch it every like 4 days or something.
Yeah, I've heard the pirated versions have English subtitles, but I never bothered to do it, I'm fine with waiting for the dubbed version

I thought I'd watch it with fan-subs, and the subtitles were awful. It was a rough second-hand translation from Japanese to Portuguese to English. The fan-subtitles were so grammatically awful I sat in absolute disgust of the whole affair. I was saddened, to think that that would be the only way I'd watch an otherwise beautiful and well-animated movie. Then I found out it was getting not only an English dub, but also a stateside Blu-Ray release!
In my elation, I bought the steel-book edition and it was genuinely the best thing I watched all over again.
Yup, the subtitle were trash. I'm learning Japanese, so watching this in sub gave me good practice, but yeah the english dub was a joy to hear about. I watched it and secretly I actually prefer it over the sub, idk why. The voices in both are great, but something about the dub really left an impression on me. Yeah the steel-book edition is worth it, looks so pretty for a worthy film!
This was my introduction to Lupin the 3rd and holy crap I'm glad it was. I understood EVERYTHING about the characters dynamics just from this and it was fantastic. My friends have been showing me more Lupin, including the Detective Conan crossovers (which made me elated, because I'm a HUUUUGE Detective Conan fan and got back into the series thanks to the crossover films) I can only hope one day we can get a Detective Conan movie at this level.

Yep you're absolutely right, for me I'm a Blu-ray kind of guy. Digital is perfectly acceptable as well, and it'll be sooner than the disc anyways.
Well, this movie itself is amazing! It has some memorable parts like the laser scene, as well as the highway car chase scene. For me, a worthy successor of Castle of Cagliostro in my top 10 list. And yes, there's a lot of Lupin the 3rd movies out there. (Even has its own Live Action Movie)
I really should talk about the other ones, but yeah I find this film to definitely be in my top 10 list. Is it a worthy successor? I feel like it's on par with being equals, Idk if I could call this film better than Cagliostro, but it's real close for me. If we're talking about animation alone, both films are impressive

Considering how Lupin has sorta pioneered a lot of people in the anime industry, I think you’d get a kick out of looking up the production for each part! Hopefully I don’t come off as demanding or anything and I hope that you see this!

@@SNKJay of course man! Despite me only finding you a couple months ago I find it a blast whenever you upload a Lupin vid, you just talk with so much passion for the series that I love hearing! I also think the most interesting part for looking up the production will be Part 2 considering that at the halfway point the animation studio changed to the Telecom style!
@@tundercomet4779 Ah that's right, and that's not to mention the complete and wacky art style shift in Part 3, and Hayao Miyazaki's involvement through Part 1 and 2-- I find all of that stuff very interesting! Dedicating videos for stuff like that would be good, I can hardly find much information on that as far as youtube reviews go. But yeah, the information is there, dispersed through many interviews, or just through editorials that have thoroughly examined the franchise.

So I just learned about Lupin the 3rd a tiny bit from watching a short scene of an episode my cousin was watching in the last week of December 2020. Really looked like it was inspired by Clue! The thing is that I still am deciding whether to watch this or not because I’d rather not see boobs or a penis in the anime. Also there’s a feeling that it also objectifies women in a weird sexual way that kind of makes me sick.
Yup, I agree. I'm not a fan of the sexual violence the older parts tend to showcase. More modern Lupin productions are more tame. Woman Called Fujiko Mine however shows women naked quite a bit, simillar to Part 1. Part 4 and 5 are pretty good I'd say, Castle of Cagliostro does a perfect job of having none of that, and the cgi film follows Cagliostro's example

Yep, people can see it much earlier than that. I guess the only reason I made it seem like the blu ray physical was the only release was because that holds true for me -- the quality is a tad better from there, but it's hardly noticeable. Either way, movie's coming sooner for American audiences, which is nice!

I recently watched it on a whim and I am so in love with this movie! The CGI was amazing, much better than any comparable Disney in my opinion. It had so much personality!

Castle of Cagliostro was my starter, I had never heard of Lupin 3rd until I watched it, now I've seen Lupin the 3rd Part one, The first, and I'm currently working on part 2.
why are dubs so popular in the states? I personally dislike dubbed anime. I especially hate how Americans mispronounce every Japanese word and name. no hate, I'm just wondering why you guys like dubs so much.
I guess Americans prefer when the language is the same as their language. Sometimes dubs can work, like with Black Lagoon or Cowboy Bebop (both of which have superior English localization than the Japanese dubbing) but for the most part, Japanese is usually the best option. It preserves the cultural norms that were set by the original animation, and besides, the animation was made in the first place to fit the Japanese mannerisms. I find anime to be janky sometimes when dubbed because accounting for those differences are VERY hard to do, unless in special circumstances (like Bebop and Black Lagoon, or even Death Note arguably).

I think for anime’s where a lot of the characters look specifically western (yes I know the Japanese just animate everyone like that because they see themselves that way), it helps people get into it. It’s weird to see a white guy speak fluent Japanese lol
Lupin especially makes sense as an English dub because most of the cast is explicitly not Japanese, even according to the original creator and despite their names. The only one who is definitely Japanese is Geomon, the rest are either inspired by Europeans (Zenigata, Lupin, Jigen), or disguise themselves as multiple different ethnicities just by changing their hair color in some cases (Fujiko) which make them unlikely to be Japanese because it’s hard to hide epicanthic folds with hair dye.
@@fifthcolumn388 True. Goemon is definitely a traiditional Japanese, I like his voicework in Part 2 especially. My confusion with Zenigata persists though, correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought Zenigata was Japanese? Maybe he's European initially in earlier shows, but I assumed he was Japanese coz he worked with Japanese law enforcement at Interpol -- but perhaps I could be mistaken. I'm just confused, I'll probably look it up.
@@SNKJay The fandom wiki assumes that they’re all at least part Japanese, but that isn’t specified in the show most of the time so I don’t know if they just assume it or if there’s evidence somewhere. In any case, Lupin III generally has negative continuity which means backstories can be rewritten at will, even episode to episode, so if in one series he and the gang are interpreted as Europeans and in another as Japanese, I really don’t see the problem.

Right! When I went to the theater to see this film, (or hell, even A Silent Voice) in the states, there was hardly any attendance! Like 4 or 5 people, unbelievable... but it makes sense I guess... anime in the states has a different appeal

Yeah, writing-wise it's your average Lupin film, if not for the animation, I'd say this would still be up there in comparison to other Lupin films, but I see what you mean

I went and saw the English version in theaters. The English version is way better.

Hehe, I showed that as a half-assed gag, thought it was more funny than scary. But, if there was anything I was truly scared of, it's people not wearing masks in public. Clearly I didn't express that the right way, but I saw that and thought it was a funny outburst (funny but also sadly serious, given how our current situation is screwing people over, as you said)
@@SNKJay Honestly, word on wearing masks has been all over the place. Even Fauci has been inconsistent on this.

"No, wait, wear a face mask, it'll protect others if you get sick"
"no, it'll protect you too."
"No, it needs to be this special kind of face mask."
"No, masks don't work anymore."
"No, wear multiple masks, stack them like they're hats in TF2."
Personally, I don't have any plans to wear a mask except to avoid fines for not wearing them indoors (and even then, I see people in stores and such not wearing masks so that policy is probably not heavily enforced) or unless someone asks 'hey, would you mind wearing a mask'. I've just become kinda jaded due to inflation of death rates, horrible mishandling of hte situation ((possibly) intentionally and unintentionally), inconsistent enforcement of lockdown restrictions, and so on. If the people applying the restrictions and condemning the people who disobey aren't even following them, why should I?

love that movie. hitler part was a bit shocking. i am attracted to almost everyone in this movie. it's a shame the dub didn't really match up with the audio but eh that's fine
GKids has a habit of letting the actors go over the lip flaps for a more natural flow of dialogue, I guess it's fine but yeah not perfect. The Hitler part floored me, reminded me instantly of Part 2 XD

I loved this film, I just wish we got more of the usual shenanigans with the main 5 instead of sitting around on an airship watching Lupin listen to exposition and talk to the one-dimensional female protag for 30 minutes :') I still enjoyed every moment of it tho, the main nazi guy geralt was so over-the-top redicoulous and evil, he was the only one who felt like a legit lupin villain (lookin at you fake grandpa who's name I forget). I watch it pretty frequently just for the animation. I hope we get another!

Haha, I finally saw it in dub as well, and it's actually not that bad, they did a great job with it. I prefer the dub a little more than the sub, but that's just me. Might have to make a follow-up to this maybe

@@SNKJay Facts, Lupin is way too underrated in the West. Also, use this video to our advantage, the algorithm worked in your favor so it's best to post a video asap. You'll be a big one day and all you gotta do is stay consistent.

That's great! I think story wise it's above average for a Lupin film, but the animation is BREATHTAKING, just that alone makes me wanna watch this again! The music is stunning as well
