Hi, At 3:28 a guy says that "the first shot of Cagliostro is for a lot of people also the first introduction to the characters, period" That's incorrct information: the red jacket series is from 1977 and the movie is from 1979, Lupin was already immensely popular when they decided to make a movie about him (if he wasn't they wouldn't even have made that movie). Now, if he was talking about the west and not Japan he is also wrong, because despite Lupin coming later in the west, the movie Cagliostro never passed on TV, so most people know Lupin because of the TV shows, not the movie. P. S. I like your videos best compared to many other animation yputubers, but please can you do a little more effort in researching how to pronounce Japanese names correctly? otsUka it's painful to hear, it should be Otsuka or even OtsukA, the middle of a word is never emphasised in Japanese. To not go wrong just put the emphasis always at the start. Of course there's also the "u" problem (it shouldn't be pronounced) but I'm not asking for perfection ;) , however, I think you understand how putting the emphasis on a letter that shouldn't even be there is a problem.
@@souljastation5463 a lot of people's first introduction to the lupin is a general thing not a historical thing dude , that Cagliostro is the most popular part of the franchise not that it was the first part of the franchise. As in both me and shaybs saw Cagliostro first and we were born in the 90s it's about distribution too ,were from two different countries and in England Cagliostro was literally the only part of lupin you could buy in England for quite a while.

Usually people that buy animation DVDs (or VHS back then) are a niche minority, the general public go with what they see on TV, and the Lupin TV show was very popular in most European countries (with the exception of England, I take?).
@@souljastation5463 dvd or rentals were huge market in the 90s (dvds still outsell blurays to this day ) lupin wasn't on TV here so yeah you'd have bought it or rented , and it's huge in Italy you know what entry is really big in Italy, Cagliostro it's the reason the fiat returned in part 4 it's literally sponsored by fiat. Cagliostro has likely been on TV here and there too we are talking about a lot of countries when you say "west" , but the blunt of it is Cagliostro fandom goes beyond the fan base of core lupin because it's the most popular entry, Miyazaki's movie credit travels far when I used to go into shops that sold movies I can guarantee I could find a copy of Cagliostro but the rest lupin is unlikely (Cagliostro is on Netflix here in England too (
The thing that also impressed me is how this movie sucessfully potrays Lupin as a likeable fun dude, considering his original manga counterpart, which is...yeah.
I remember days of being in art school and being memorized by Castle of Cagliosio’s breathes of air and setting shots. Thats a calling card of Miyazaki, now I want to rewatch it.
The reason i never watched Castle of Cagliostro was cause i thought it was a movie heavily based on a series i knew nothing about, so i wouldn't understand the lore/story beats in a movie. Glad to see i was just keeping myself from straight up art.
Lupin has to be one of my favorite anime franchises of all time. The cast is so charming that even bad entries in the franchise are at least watchable. Great video 👍
In regards to the "surprisingly quaint, wistful scenes" throughout Cagliostro. If Miyazaki's involved, you WILL notice Nature, even in a high action film.
Probably my favorite bit of animation in the entire movie is Lupin kicking the hood of the car down and jumping into the driver's seat. Something about it being almost one fluid motion combined with how quick and snappy it is and the grin on Lupin's face as he does it--it really gets your blood pumping even before the chase scene truly starts. This whole movie is full of great little moments like that, and that's part of why I love it. :D
I watched this one having never seen any Lupin or without knowing it was even directed by Miyazaki, by the end of the film I was asking myself if it was made by Ghibli...? Then his name scrolled by in the credits lol! It's crazy how fully fleshed out Miyazaki's art and directing styles were already so defined this early in his career. Also more collabs with Shaybs!
I learned a lot on this. Pre-1980 Lupin has always been a void in my education... which is odd because I studied the music of that era for quite some time.

lovely video. ive consumed most of lupin the past year and this is def in my top five fav lupin films. you can see some of miyazaki’s energy come back in the recent lupin the iii the first film- truly putting the gentleman in gentleman thief there. just hope the other characters get their time to shine in the next few films.
The coolest part about this film is you can see bits and pieces at almost all of his later films in it. The wide shots, score, pacing, character design all of it. It’s wonderful.
Castle of Cagliostro has easily been the best thing to happen to the franchise! It's a masterpiece from a story telling, music, beautiful backgrounds and animation! This is an easy recommendation to anyone into Studio Ghibli Films or wanting an intro into Lupins shenanigans!
Thank you so much for making this video. I just saw this film for the first time a night ago and my admiration and appreciation for it keeps growing. It's such a great action film in its own right but with more depth--Where you pointed out showing that they don't care as much about the money anymore as being a shift in the opening of the film, I hadn't even thought about it but it makes me appreciate the film more. Also the music is great.
Like many others, this was my first introduction to Miyazaki. A friend of mine from work wanted me to check it out, so he loaned me a VHS tape of it. It was the Streamline Pictures dub with big spaces of black omitting all of the Japanese credits during the titles scenes, which looked strange at the time (until I saw the original version). This was back in the late 90’s (I’m 55 now) when a lot of Anime and Anime merchandise was starting to make it’s way to the USA for the first time via places like Suncoast Movie Company in our local mall. This film got me into Miyazaki, and I’ve been a fan since. I’ll never forget the first time seeing the Fiat scale the cliff through sheer velocity and forward momentum. It almost looks like it could work, while at the same time looking absolutely impossible. What a chase sequence.
This animation has all the techniques of animation. And it was produced in a very short period of 4 months. I think that Hayao Miyazaki is a miraculous animator who surpasses Walt Disney.
_I can't give Castle of Castrogo enough praise, It's truly a perfect film. I really like some of the changes made to the main characters personalities that most hardcore Lupin fans might not, I actually found the change to make them more endearing so it's definitely one of the more creative interpretation in Lupin III franchise. This film was also the start of how Miyazaki creates his movies going forward._
I adore how the Fiat does a “hop, skip & a bang” before the rocket boosters ignite fully. I love that trope of cars giving a quick backfire & stall before the boosters or secondaries kick in and car rockets off.

Why I feel Miyazaki is like Gordon and that italian conductor Toscanini? All of them are amazing in their job and really have high standarts focusing to be perfect and have a deep passion of what they do.
Didn't realized that Lupin the third original character had a way different personality. I was wondering if Netflix show Lupin was inspired by Lupin the third as the first thing coming to my mind but nope it turns out its the fictional character Arsène Lupin.
I don’t understand how anyone can dislike Lupin as a series honestly. I guess James has different tastes I guess. All of the shows have their own flare to them and I personally loved watching parts 2, 3, and 5.
I also believe there's a good amount of Hergé's Tintin in Cagliostro and lot of other Lupin - 'King Ottokar's Scepter' 'The Secret of the Unicorn' and 'The Calculus Affair especially show a lot of similarities, i.e. exotic made-up European settings and high speed comic car chases, one of which involves another Italian car - "Italian car, Italian driver, best in the world, no?"
maybe hard to say i never saw miyazaki mention it dont know how bigg tin tin is japan at that time , a lot of this stuff is tropes that pull back to the days of the original lupin novels (cagliostro is from them originally)
Oh man, am I glad that THIS movie was my first introduction to Lupin, like you guys said, the rest is pretty weak compared to this underrated masterpiece. I really like that Zenigata was more serious and had actual character in this, and his Cagliostro design, in my opinion, is superior to the standard Lupin design. You really gotta love an appreciate every bit of animation the people working on it were able to squeeze out, extremely remarkable for the time, too! Also, that Miyazaki touch! I do agree that none of the other Lupin stuff that I've seen are as good as Cagliostro, but I do feel like some get kinda close, or are good in a different way.
Ah, i feel like i've come home, i figured this Miyazaki video essay would be the perfect way to catch up and have some fun again. I may try emailing u again like I used to, though I know its a long shot haha. I'm psyched about chatting about these great works again. I remember being lucky enough to see the classic Lupin III show for a good while on tv when i was 12, loved it, didn't understand it so much at that age but I subconsciously knew it was good on allot of levels. I could also sense the artistic liberation. Now with this film though i haven't seen it, (crazy right, i'll change that soon) i can tell that spirit isn't lost. Another thing that's grabbing me is the happy confusion i get, like how the happenings are cartoony yet don't lose that edge, and grit ya know? Like there's is the feeling of a serious deadly consequence if things go wrong. The soundtrack does the same thing in my opinion which is awesome. Those backgrounds clearly give me an instant classic Miyazaki vibe, and having Yasuo Otsuka on board, ah, you can't go wrong the late great Yasuo, just a dedicated, passionate, studious, craftsman of glorious living lines. But all this, and so much more, in just seven months? That's insane! This was another great video essay dude, Kudos to you and you're guest narrator Shaybs. :-)
The first movie of his that I watched. I love the movie but that beginning car chase is pure animation, pure cinema. The atmosphere of this movie is something. It's like it's a real place.
Lupin the third is honestly underrated and I think cagliostro takes most of the fame while the rest of the series is just there. I like the movie but people really should check out the show
I would expect so, since it was directed by Japan's most famous director. The TV show isn't exactly unknown though it's huge in Italy and in the American toonami have run season 2 , 4 and 5 at least
I feel that a little but recently TMS has been getting the series out there on streaming, Diskotek has been putting out the shows and lesser known specials on DVD and Blu-ray, and The First got a lot of attention from people unfamiliar with Lupin. I do think Part V is the highpoint of the series, just the best writing they've had.
Watched this film on Film4 one evening about 10 years ago or so. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve watched it since then. 50 maybe? Could be 100, it wouldn’t surprise me. It’s my #1 favourite film, the one I turn to whenever I need a pick-me-up or to while away a rainy afternoon. I wouldn’t say it’s Miyazaki’s best film, but it is my personal favourite of his filmography. I love the world: Cagliostro feels like a real place, a country that’s existed long before the film begins. It helps that I think Alpine Europe is one of the most picturesque places on Planet Earth so I’m down for any film that takes place there. Despite my love of it, I will say that having watched more of the Lupin films, TV shows and TV specials, it does bother me just a little that Miyazaki sanded down some of Lupin’s rougher edges - he isn’t as cheeky and mischievous here as in other entries, after all he’s pretty much Japan’s answer to James Bond. But then Bond’s personality is pretty malleable so it makes sense for Lupin’s to be too - I do like the variety of interpretations of the character, it’s part of what makes the series fun to watch for me. Cagliostro does feel like it’s depicting an older, more mature Lupin, which does make for a nice counterpoint to other Lupin stories, though it’s rather undermined by the ending where Lupin and the gang race off for another job in a “That’s Our Lupin!” way. So yes, my favourite Lupin film, but not my favourite depiction of Lupin, if that makes any sense. I will say that Tony Oliver will always be my favourite English dub Lupin voice - he gets the right mix of silly and serious. Hayter doesn’t quite have that silliness, which works for the Lupin in Cagliostro, but I don’t think it’d work for any other Lupin story. He’s better than Bob Bergen in the Streamline dub though, but Bergen does a pretty good job. It’s just a shame that the Streamline dub seems to be the go-to dub these days: it’s the one on Netflix and the one StudioCanal uses on their DVD and Blu-Ray. I only have the Manga dub because I bought the Manga DVD release when I saw it in a CeX shop, despite already owning the Optimum/StudioCanal DVD. Yes, I own two different copies of this film - that’s how much I love it.
i never caught it on film4 but i know its been on there a fair few times which i thought was cool oh thats shame about the manga UK dub i thought the newer releases would have it , i know discoteck does but theres was an american release, i like both hayter and tony, i always found a lot of dubs for lupin to be pretty fun easy watching stuff
@@Stevem Yeah, it was part of a Studio Ghibli season. It’s not a Ghibli film, but I guess they treated it as an honorary Ghibli on account of the Miyazaki connection. Sonny Strait does a good job too in any of the Funimation dubbed Lupin films/TV shows/TV specials, his voice fits the role well. Only problem with Funimation is that they pronounce his name “Loo-Pin” as opposed to “Loo-Pahn” but it’s a very minor niggle. And hey, it’s better than the Streamline dubs where they had to call him “Wolf” for legal reasons. I like Bob Bergen, but the problem is whenever I hear his voice I think of Luke Skywalker, as he was the go-to guy to voice him when Mark Hamill was busy or too expensive (like Jim Hanks and Woody). But yes, it does bother me how poor the Lupin releases are in the UK. Not so much that what we get is bad, but just how little there is of it. Discotek are doing a great job in the US with Lupin (including a release of Mamo with all 4 English dubs), and what they haven’t done Funimation probably already did, but over here? Two films, two TV shows and a couple of the specials. Why can’t we get a nice Blu-Ray release of Mamo or the Legend of the Gold of Babylon? Thankfully, some kind Americans have put a lot of it up on RUclips - the downside is that TMS then takes it down again. Bah! Either way, the release of The First can’t come soon enough! Hopefully it’ll go into cinemas first.
Love the series so much I even have a Jigen costume that I sew myself and bought a Goemon samurai sword just so I can say "I've cut another worthless object". If you want to start watching my suggestion is Castle of Cagliostro, Fuma Conspiracy, Tokyo Crisis, Green vs. Red, and Goemon's Blood Spray

19:00 I would have to say that this is the only time Fujiko was not just a “bad ass”, but an actual character (and nowhere near the manipulative floozy with breasts of extraordinary magnitude). Akin to Ripley or Sarah Conner, the key to a strong female character is simply having a strong character that happens to be female. 23:10 I like both the Streamline and Manga dubs. They both have their own “flavor” to add (compare the 2 dubs to when the butler is reading Lupin’s message to the Count).
Women known as fujiko mine is probs the most interesting fujiko, this one is fine although im not sure theres much character to be seen outside her usual own mission kind of thing and that she is also an army lady now. I cant say I think there are any hard rules for writing any of those types of characters , both Ripley and Sarah don't start that way
@@Stevem true... but compare her in COC to the 70’s show (not that I mind _(hubba hubba!)_ ... I just find it interesting how Miyazaki found a way to tone down the characters and bring them down to earth without betraying them.
This was a great movie but I actually was introduced to lupin via the mine fujiko series which to this day is in my top 5 anime. Lupin in that r rated jazzy universe (along with the other Koike movies) is the best!
I kinda wish you guys had talked a little about Count Cagliostro himself in that caracter section. Dunno if anyone else found him interesting but I personally found every scene with him really cool and I love how he's kind of an antithesis to Miyazaki's Lupin: while Lupin is kind of a humble thief who makes do with what he has available at the moment he needs, the Count surrounds himself with traps and has a set plan for everything he does. In a way, they're like a knight and a wizard.

I watched all the Lupin Movies and shows when I was a kid. Castle of Cagliostro is my very first introduction to Lupin and ever since then I watched anything that has the name of Lupin or when the main cast cameo in some show or movie.
I once dreamt that the Sherman Brothers, who did songs for Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and Charlotte’s Web did songs for this film.
Yeah it's like a place you want to live in yourself. Sort of endless summer kind of vibe when you were a kid a went on adventures with your friends, building tree houses, playing cops and robbers etc. 😎
In 2004 my family bought a DVD of Castle of cagliostro. I still have that recording and the English dub in that one is soooooo much better than the ones on Netflix.
Fire treasure is the best. I don’t think it was a mistake to make it “universally appealing” And then you have to reallllly give it to hayao since this animation is some of the best from 1979. I mean again “1979”!! I’ve seen this movie more than ten times.
My introduction to Lupin III was, curiously enough, the Famicom game, Pandora's Legacy ( バンドラの遺産). It was a fairly poor game but, interestingly, it was kind of a sequel to The Castle of Cagliostro and featured the character of Clarisse. The plot was a little odd and featured a phoenix trapped inside Pandora's Box.
I've watched this review several times and it really makes me wanna watch the Manga UK dub since I've only heard the original Japanese track and the Streamline dub. I really like Bob Bergan's Lupin, especially in Cagliostro, but the dub is afraid of those long silences and places dialogue where it ought not be. Plus, I've heard so much about how great David Hayter's version of the character but I can't seem to find a streaming version of it.
I saw the Streamline dub in the Theater at Cleveland Institute of Art back in 1991 I think? I was always confused as I thought it was Tony Oliver that voiced him, but it seems it is Bob Bergen. I've never seen the newest dub of it.
Much more western audience must know about Future Boy Conan. All of its 26 episodes are totally flawless. That's not easy to do. The series had a very well-received re-run last year but I can't find any RUclips reactor watching that yet. Someone has to spread its quality and reputation. If you love Castle in the Sky but haven't seen this series, you're really missing out.

I still wonder why, as far as I know, it's still only available in fansubs while so many foreign audiences worship Miyazaki on a pedestal and most companies don't seem to care. Anyway, it's surprising that you know about Showa era Moomin. Earlier part of 1969 series was pretty crazy that would madden its original creator, but later 1969 series and 1972 series are definitely a masterpiece. It had so many moral episodes to children but they were never preachy, especially ep51. Sad to think these series are sealed indefinitely.
@@Nikujaga4649 i was talking about this earlier and there could be a couple factors around it from high licencing fees which are off the table to the original author of the book making it more complicated etc Otsuka was very much involved in the original moomins version, i saw one of the films in the cinema a while back , i like the stop motion version and the 90s moomins a fair bit
@@Stevem It's funny that Miyazaki almost totally rejected Alexander Key's original book and I quote, "I don't like it". Like, latter half of the whole anime's story was newly added by Miyazaki. But yeah, the problem is, its idea or framework are based on the book... Speaking of which, Hayao Miyazaki's "problem" is that his methodology is applied not only to past masterpieces, but also to works whose authors are still active and not necessarily famous, and furthermore, that his methodology produces works that are more interesting (in a sense, more than the original works). But no matter how critical you are, it is also true that without the original work, the story would not exist. So, for those authors whose works were adapted by Hayao Miyazaki, the success has created a complicated situation in which they have simultaneously benefited and been humiliated. Monkey Punch famously expressed his discomfort with Hayao Miyazaki's Lupin, saying, "That's not my Lupin," and I suspect that other authors like Kiki's Delivery Service's writer had similar struggles. Lupin in "Cagliostro" is a kind-hearted and righteous man, different from Monkey Punch's image of Lupin who is also a ruthless criminal. So Monkey Punch rejected the idea of Miyazaki's version of Lupin spreading, but he was also aware of the reality that "Cagliostro" prolonged the life of Lupin's content. "Lupin III: DEAD OR ALIVE," a feature-length animated film directed by Monkey Punch himself, was a work with a strong awareness of Cagliostro, a film that he supposedly hated. It even looks like a retelling of Cagliostro. It is interesting to see Monkey Punch's mixed feelings about Miyazaki's version of Lupin.
I adore Cagliostro. Specifically the Hayter dub. There is just something about this dub that elevates it high above the Bergen dub (The Bergen dub is missing part of the movie's soul). For curiosity sake, I would love to see a Tony Oliver cast dub of it, but that is obviously never gonna happen. I absolutely love it. Definitely in my top 5 animated movies of all time list. Bar none.

Hi, At 3:28 a guy says that "the first shot of Cagliostro is for a lot of people also the first introduction to the characters, period" That's incorrct information: the red jacket series is from 1977 and the movie is from 1979, Lupin was already immensely popular when they decided to make a movie about him (if he wasn't they wouldn't even have made that movie).
Now, if he was talking about the west and not Japan he is also wrong, because despite Lupin coming later in the west, the movie Cagliostro never passed on TV, so most people know Lupin because of the TV shows, not the movie.
P. S. I like your videos best compared to many other animation yputubers, but please can you do a little more effort in researching how to pronounce Japanese names correctly? otsUka it's painful to hear, it should be Otsuka or even OtsukA, the middle of a word is never emphasised in Japanese. To not go wrong just put the emphasis always at the start.
Of course there's also the "u" problem (it shouldn't be pronounced) but I'm not asking for perfection ;)

As in both me and shaybs saw Cagliostro first and we were born in the 90s it's about distribution too ,were from two different countries and in England Cagliostro was literally the only part of lupin you could buy in England for quite a while.

Cagliostro has likely been on TV here and there too we are talking about a lot of countries when you say "west" , but the blunt of it is Cagliostro fandom goes beyond the fan base of core lupin because it's the most popular entry, Miyazaki's movie credit travels far when I used to go into shops that sold movies I can guarantee I could find a copy of Cagliostro but the rest lupin is unlikely (Cagliostro is on Netflix here in England too (

Probably my favorite bit of animation in the entire movie is Lupin kicking the hood of the car down and jumping into the driver's seat. Something about it being almost one fluid motion combined with how quick and snappy it is and the grin on Lupin's face as he does it--it really gets your blood pumping even before the chase scene truly starts. This whole movie is full of great little moments like that, and that's part of why I love it. :D
I watched this one having never seen any Lupin or without knowing it was even directed by Miyazaki, by the end of the film I was asking myself if it was made by Ghibli...? Then his name scrolled by in the credits lol! It's crazy how fully fleshed out Miyazaki's art and directing styles were already so defined this early in his career.

lovely video. ive consumed most of lupin the past year and this is def in my top five fav lupin films. you can see some of miyazaki’s energy come back in the recent lupin the iii the first film- truly putting the gentleman in gentleman thief there. just hope the other characters get their time to shine in the next few films.

The coolest part about this film is you can see bits and pieces at almost all of his later films in it. The wide shots, score, pacing, character design all of it. It’s wonderful.
Castle of Cagliostro has easily been the best thing to happen to the franchise! It's a masterpiece from a story telling, music, beautiful backgrounds and animation! This is an easy recommendation to anyone into Studio Ghibli Films or wanting an intro into Lupins shenanigans!

This is actually the first time I’ve seen and heard of you. (I don’t like your like of swearing though).
Although not one of my favorite Miyazaki films, Castle of Cagliostro is still so impressive and a certified classic
for a film made in 4 months it is insane what they could do ,with only 10 Key animators also
Like many others, this was my first introduction to Miyazaki. A friend of mine from work wanted me to check it out, so he loaned me a VHS tape of it. It was the Streamline Pictures dub with big spaces of black omitting all of the Japanese credits during the titles scenes, which looked strange at the time (until I saw the original version).
This was back in the late 90’s (I’m 55 now) when a lot of Anime and Anime merchandise was starting to make it’s way to the USA for the first time via places like Suncoast Movie Company in our local mall.
This film got me into Miyazaki, and I’ve been a fan since. I’ll never forget the first time seeing the Fiat scale the cliff through sheer velocity and forward momentum. It almost looks like it could work, while at the same time looking absolutely impossible. What a chase sequence.

This animation has all the techniques of animation. And it was produced in a very short period of 4 months. I think that Hayao Miyazaki is a miraculous animator who surpasses Walt Disney.

I loved Castle of Cagliostro. I was turned off from it at first, but I quickly became interested, and fell fast in love.
_I can't give Castle of Castrogo enough praise, It's truly a perfect film. I really like some of the changes made to the main characters personalities that most hardcore Lupin fans might not, I actually found the change to make them more endearing so it's definitely one of the more creative interpretation in Lupin III franchise. This film was also the start of how Miyazaki creates his movies going forward._

Why I feel Miyazaki is like Gordon and that italian conductor Toscanini? All of them are amazing in their job and really have high standarts focusing to be perfect and have a deep passion of what they do.

I also believe there's a good amount of Hergé's Tintin in Cagliostro and lot of other Lupin - 'King Ottokar's Scepter' 'The Secret of the Unicorn' and 'The Calculus Affair especially show a lot of similarities, i.e. exotic made-up European settings and high speed comic car chases, one of which involves another Italian car - "Italian car, Italian driver, best in the world, no?"

I really like that Zenigata was more serious and had actual character in this, and his Cagliostro design, in my opinion, is superior to the standard Lupin design.
You really gotta love an appreciate every bit of animation the people working on it were able to squeeze out, extremely remarkable for the time, too!
Also, that Miyazaki touch! You really, really gotta love that Miyazaki touch, it's impeccable!

Ah, i feel like i've come home, i figured this Miyazaki video essay would be the perfect way to catch up and have some fun again. I may try emailing u again like I used to, though I know its a long shot haha. I'm psyched about chatting about these great works again. I remember being lucky enough to see the classic Lupin III show for a good while on tv when i was 12, loved it, didn't understand it so much at that age but I subconsciously knew it was good on allot of levels. I could also sense the artistic liberation. Now with this film though i haven't seen it, (crazy right, i'll change that soon) i can tell that spirit isn't lost. Another thing that's grabbing me is the happy confusion i get, like how the happenings are cartoony yet don't lose that edge, and grit ya know? Like there's is the feeling of a serious deadly consequence if things go wrong. The soundtrack does the same thing in my opinion which is awesome. Those backgrounds clearly give me an instant classic Miyazaki vibe, and having Yasuo Otsuka on board, ah, you can't go wrong the late great Yasuo, just a dedicated, passionate, studious, craftsman of glorious living lines. But all this, and so much more, in just seven months? That's insane! This was another great video essay dude, Kudos to you and you're guest narrator Shaybs. :-)

Lupin the third is honestly underrated and I think cagliostro takes most of the fame while the rest of the series is just there. I like the movie but people really should check out the show
I would expect so, since it was directed by Japan's most famous director. The TV show isn't exactly unknown though it's huge in Italy and in the American toonami have run season 2 , 4 and 5 at least
I feel that a little but recently TMS has been getting the series out there on streaming, Diskotek has been putting out the shows and lesser known specials on DVD and Blu-ray, and The First got a lot of attention from people unfamiliar with Lupin.
I do think Part V is the highpoint of the series, just the best writing they've had.
Part II is Peak
Watched this film on Film4 one evening about 10 years ago or so. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve watched it since then. 50 maybe? Could be 100, it wouldn’t surprise me. It’s my #1 favourite film, the one I turn to whenever I need a pick-me-up or to while away a rainy afternoon. I wouldn’t say it’s Miyazaki’s best film, but it is my personal favourite of his filmography. I love the world: Cagliostro feels like a real place, a country that’s existed long before the film begins. It helps that I think Alpine Europe is one of the most picturesque places on Planet Earth so I’m down for any film that takes place there.
Despite my love of it, I will say that having watched more of the Lupin films, TV shows and TV specials, it does bother me just a little that Miyazaki sanded down some of Lupin’s rougher edges - he isn’t as cheeky and mischievous here as in other entries, after all he’s pretty much Japan’s answer to James Bond. But then Bond’s personality is pretty malleable so it makes sense for Lupin’s to be too - I do like the variety of interpretations of the character, it’s part of what makes the series fun to watch for me. Cagliostro does feel like it’s depicting an older, more mature Lupin, which does make for a nice counterpoint to other Lupin stories, though it’s rather undermined by the ending where Lupin and the gang race off for another job in a “That’s Our Lupin!” way.
So yes, my favourite Lupin film, but not my favourite depiction of Lupin, if that makes any sense.
I will say that Tony Oliver will always be my favourite English dub Lupin voice - he gets the right mix of silly and serious. Hayter doesn’t quite have that silliness, which works for the Lupin in Cagliostro, but I don’t think it’d work for any other Lupin story. He’s better than Bob Bergen in the Streamline dub though, but Bergen does a pretty good job. It’s just a shame that the Streamline dub seems to be the go-to dub these days: it’s the one on Netflix and the one StudioCanal uses on their DVD and Blu-Ray. I only have the Manga dub because I bought the Manga DVD release when I saw it in a CeX shop, despite already owning the Optimum/StudioCanal DVD. Yes, I own two different copies of this film - that’s how much I love it.

oh thats shame about the manga UK dub i thought the newer releases would have it , i know discoteck does but theres was an american release, i like both hayter and tony, i always found a lot of dubs for lupin to be pretty fun easy watching stuff
@@Stevem Yeah, it was part of a Studio Ghibli season. It’s not a Ghibli film, but I guess they treated it as an honorary Ghibli on account of the Miyazaki connection.
Sonny Strait does a good job too in any of the Funimation dubbed Lupin films/TV shows/TV specials, his voice fits the role well. Only problem with Funimation is that they pronounce his name “Loo-Pin” as opposed to “Loo-Pahn” but it’s a very minor niggle. And hey, it’s better than the Streamline dubs where they had to call him “Wolf” for legal reasons. I like Bob Bergen, but the problem is whenever I hear his voice I think of Luke Skywalker, as he was the go-to guy to voice him when Mark Hamill was busy or too expensive (like Jim Hanks and Woody).
But yes, it does bother me how poor the Lupin releases are in the UK. Not so much that what we get is bad, but just how little there is of it. Discotek are doing a great job in the US with Lupin (including a release of Mamo with all 4 English dubs), and what they haven’t done Funimation probably already did, but over here? Two films, two TV shows and a couple of the specials. Why can’t we get a nice Blu-Ray release of Mamo or the Legend of the Gold of Babylon? Thankfully, some kind Americans have put a lot of it up on RUclips - the downside is that TMS then takes it down again. Bah! Either way, the release of The First can’t come soon enough! Hopefully it’ll go into cinemas first.

19:00 I would have to say that this is the only time Fujiko was not just a “bad ass”, but an actual character (and nowhere near the manipulative floozy with breasts of extraordinary magnitude).
Akin to Ripley or Sarah Conner, the key to a strong female character is simply having a strong character that happens to be female.
23:10 I like both the Streamline and Manga dubs. They both have their own “flavor” to add (compare the 2 dubs to when the butler is reading Lupin’s message to the Count).
Women known as fujiko mine is probs the most interesting fujiko, this one is fine although im not sure theres much character to be seen outside her usual own mission kind of thing and that she is also an army lady now. I cant say I think there are any hard rules for writing any of those types of characters , both Ripley and Sarah don't start that way
@@Stevem true... but compare her in COC to the 70’s show (not that I mind _(hubba hubba!)_ ... I just find it interesting how Miyazaki found a way to tone down the characters and bring them down to earth without betraying them.
This was a great movie but I actually was introduced to lupin via the mine fujiko series which to this day is in my top 5 anime. Lupin in that r rated jazzy universe (along with the other Koike movies) is the best!
That was my first lupin TV show it was recommended online to me for cheap on some website and I picked it up
I kinda wish you guys had talked a little about Count Cagliostro himself in that caracter section. Dunno if anyone else found him interesting but I personally found every scene with him really cool and I love how he's kind of an antithesis to Miyazaki's Lupin: while Lupin is kind of a humble thief who makes do with what he has available at the moment he needs, the Count surrounds himself with traps and has a set plan for everything he does. In a way, they're like a knight and a wizard.

It's funny how the Lupin in this movie and in the later series is entirely different to who he is in the original manga

My introduction to Lupin III was, curiously enough, the Famicom game, Pandora's Legacy ( バンドラの遺産). It was a fairly poor game but, interestingly, it was kind of a sequel to The Castle of Cagliostro and featured the character of Clarisse. The plot was a little odd and featured a phoenix trapped inside Pandora's Box.

I've watched this review several times and it really makes me wanna watch the Manga UK dub since I've only heard the original Japanese track and the Streamline dub. I really like Bob Bergan's Lupin, especially in Cagliostro, but the dub is afraid of those long silences and places dialogue where it ought not be. Plus, I've heard so much about how great David Hayter's version of the character but I can't seem to find a streaming version of it.
I saw the Streamline dub in the Theater at Cleveland Institute of Art back in 1991 I think? I was always confused as I thought it was Tony Oliver that voiced him, but it seems it is Bob Bergen. I've never seen the newest dub of it.
Bob Bergen only played Lupin a couple times in the 90s , mostly Tony Oliver has played the character since

Much more western audience must know about Future Boy Conan. All of its 26 episodes are totally flawless. That's not easy to do.
The series had a very well-received re-run last year but I can't find any RUclips reactor watching that yet.
Someone has to spread its quality and reputation. If you love Castle in the Sky but haven't seen this series, you're really missing out.

@@Stevem @STEVEM Good point. I still wonder why, as far as I know, it's still only available in fansubs while so many foreign audiences worship Miyazaki on a pedestal and most companies don't seem to care.
Anyway, it's surprising that you know about Showa era Moomin. Earlier part of 1969 series was pretty crazy that would madden its original creator, but later 1969 series and 1972 series are definitely a masterpiece. It had so many moral episodes to children but they were never preachy, especially ep51. Sad to think these series are sealed indefinitely.
@@Nikujaga4649 i was talking about this earlier and there could be a couple factors around it from high licencing fees which are off the table to the original author of the book making it more complicated etc
Otsuka was very much involved in the original moomins version, i saw one of the films in the cinema a while back , i like the stop motion version and the 90s moomins a fair bit
@@Stevem It's funny that Miyazaki almost totally rejected Alexander Key's original book and I quote, "I don't like it". Like, latter half of the whole anime's story was newly added by Miyazaki.
But yeah, the problem is, its idea or framework are based on the book...
Speaking of which, Hayao Miyazaki's "problem" is that his methodology is applied not only to past masterpieces, but also to works whose authors are still active and not necessarily famous, and furthermore, that his methodology produces works that are more interesting (in a sense, more than the original works).
But no matter how critical you are, it is also true that without the original work, the story would not exist.
So, for those authors whose works were adapted by Hayao Miyazaki, the success has created a complicated situation in which they have simultaneously benefited and been humiliated. Monkey Punch famously expressed his discomfort with Hayao Miyazaki's Lupin, saying, "That's not my Lupin," and I suspect that other authors like Kiki's Delivery Service's writer had similar struggles.
Lupin in "Cagliostro" is a kind-hearted and righteous man, different from Monkey Punch's image of Lupin who is also a ruthless criminal. So Monkey Punch rejected the idea of Miyazaki's version of Lupin spreading, but he was also aware of the reality that "Cagliostro" prolonged the life of Lupin's content.
"Lupin III: DEAD OR ALIVE," a feature-length animated film directed by Monkey Punch himself, was a work with a strong awareness of Cagliostro, a film that he supposedly hated. It even looks like a retelling of Cagliostro. It is interesting to see Monkey Punch's mixed feelings about Miyazaki's version of Lupin.

I adore Cagliostro. Specifically the Hayter dub. There is just something about this dub that elevates it high above the Bergen dub (The Bergen dub is missing part of the movie's soul). For curiosity sake, I would love to see a Tony Oliver cast dub of it, but that is obviously never gonna happen.
I absolutely love it. Definitely in my top 5 animated movies of all time list. Bar none.
