I love your videos. They are unpredictable. One minute you are cooking, the next you are inside the van. Your videos are so different from one to the next. I love them. Thanks
One more small suggestion, George: please consider adding the ability to have a cover for the fan opening. This helps with thermal isolation, and light leakage.
@Roger That Exactly what I was thinking. Flush mount magnets in the ceiling and drill a flat bottom hole on the inside of the cabinet door (assuming the magnets are round) but not all the way through, so when the magnet is press fit in the hole, there is only 1/4" or less of wood between the magnet in the ceiling and the magnet in the inside of the cabinet door.
I like the bolt too! It’s all in the finishing details!! Including the frittata. Thanks again George for another fun-filled video!! Your videos make my day...loads of laughs! Great way to start a day!! 👍
5:05 Take a router and make an indentation around the edge of the plywood to make it fall into place between the profiles. No Velcro necessary and it will save you some space in the cabinets.
Love watching you! Your attention to detail warms my heart. My wife always says I’m too picky and that nobody will notice! I see that I am not the only one that notices! 😉
Excellent video. I think that everyone would agree, that the big RV manufacturers should be taking notes from all of your videos. I agree throw the plastic fan trim in the garbage. It doesn't belong in a Ferrari.
I prefer sliding door panels on the upper cabinets too. If you have to hinge, I would hinge the doors to flip up and use magnets on the ceiling to hold it open . . . no struts needed, full hands free access. great video.
I can feel the energy of the viewers. The excitement is in the air. Giving us glimpses of the more finished interior in such a tantalizing way...you big tease. I love it. Yes, we are excited! I was left wanting more after this episode. Great work George. The color scheme you described is going to be very classy. You are charting the course! You've stayed consistent with your core values throughout (e.g., the accessibility of everything, the function, the aesthetics). I love the mixing it up with the cooking. Way fun. You get the Emmy Award! Thank you for taking the time. Your concluding footage, after the logo, tells the story. This is a lot of work to get such high quality, entertaining, footage. Man do we all appreciate it! Have a great week!
THANKS DAVE. I feel the same way. Yes, we all know the bones and underlying systems are strong, but the real fun is in the aesthetics. And the details, I thrive on the details!
George you made me smile again. When you look in the mirror you can see Ansel Adams zone system in you mane. Your videos always have correct exposure and balance, including your instructions.
If you don't already know, cooking with stainless you need to preheat the pan, without oil. Once it's toasty, you can test by throwing a few droplets of water on it and if it balls ups and rolls around, it's ready, if the water sizzles out, it's not hot enough. Sauteeing some veggies, high heat oil like Sunflower, or Canola, is helpful. You can use Olive oil, but it will burn quicker and have to watch it closely. When completely dry (no water balls) add oil, and wait until you see a shimmer, it's the point right before you see a little smoke. At this point your pan is ready for veggies, eggs, whatever. It won't be like a non-stick pan, but sticking will be minimal when preheated correctly. You can see the water test here: ruclips.net/video/CB-SCA1reqE/видео.html
My AllClad pans work and they have lids. You may be able to get a lid from them to fit yours. I am glad you figured out the frittata from a Fajita 😉 After you fry your veggies in the oil, turn down the heat and cover with your lid to finish. Oil fry’s, the steam will set the egg and it should be light and fluffy.
Pan lids are like single socks. There's a special lost place in this universe where they hide. Keep cooking George, I'm sure you will crack the code for perfect results with the induction cooktop eventually.
You'll only need one gas strut for those cabinet doors. I used much thicker ply for my doors and one gas strut works fine. For the larger doors I did use a single stronger strut.
I’m liking this van, your use of weight savings materials and techniques is the first important thing for me, then is your attention to detail. When you’re ready, my name will be on the list for one.
IMO I think the slider doors on the cabinets would look much more attractive than seeing the exposed hinges. BTW, I just love it when you speed up your audio of you talking...hilarious! Always great to see a new video from you, George! Keep 'em coming! Take care! ( 5/5/2019 Sunday 10:50amCST ~Jim in Houston, Texas~ )
We think alike, Jim. I originally had those grey doors as sliders. But the slider framework took up too much space in the opening. My thinking is this particular cabinet will be for larger more bulky items. Need all the access I can get!
Ah...it's a good Sunday morning here on the West coast: Cup of coffee, Breakfast with the Beatles on the radio (every Sunday morning 8-10), and a GREAT NEW VIDEO from George! You *always* give a bunch of smiles, laughs, and encouragement (to keep working hard on my side business raising $ for my own Humble Road van)! BTW, check out EVACOCAST ceramic non-stick fry pans, George. They may not nest, but are easily the best I've ever used, and can be used up to 900degF (unlike most other ceramic cookware that tops out at 350degF). Work great on induction.... ;^) (Also BTW, my husband a pro photographer since a teenager [and spent time with Ansel Adams in a workshop] appreciated the Ansel zone reference, not to mention the ATTENTION PAID TO LIGHTING, STAGING, etc.!!)
George, love what you are doing with the luan and the window covers being stored right there. Love the look of the ceiling. The stove, I like the idea, but not the performance but maybe it will get better. How were the eggs? I think it will be one gorgeous van. You are very talented . Thanks for sharing this build. Hope to see you traveling in it soon. 🚐
Another great video. This van is going to be so special when you are done. I love watching the process - YOUR process. You are very talented. Just enough OCD to make everything spectacular!
Hey, I watch all your videos for van conversion from the start, great tutorials and also thumbs up for modular approach! :D Idea for doors without any springs, etc... Maybe use magnets on the ceiling that will hold door handles? neodymium magnets, small but can hold a lot of weight. :) I use them for Desktop PC sides, never had an issue.
Ikeas no stick pan is my go to pan for my induction cook top and it came withh a clear glass lid. I think it was 27 or 43 dollars. Never have burned my eggs hardly need oil. Most times I do not add anything to prevent it from sticking. Love it. 2 yrs now and use it every day.
Eggs on induction cooktop, I use 6-7 for frying eggs, down to 3 or less for frittatas, just need patience. Even better if you can finish it off with heat on top to melt cheese and brown it a bit, since it's already cooked at the bottom.
Just found you and binged the whole show the last couple days - congrats on your accomplishments - the van, the studio, the travel and insider looks at manufacturers! Can't wait for the plumbing to happen! Rigid windows? I can't help but think that some top-hung-hinged multi-locking windows could benefit all that air flow you've got channeled in the van. If you've got those fans going and no windows or doors open, that will stress the fan-motors. Some like a bit of fresh air in the night while sleeping, but want them secured as well. Also nice to have some opened slightly while traveling to get some good fresh air pushed through the van. I supposed the front door windows could be used, but no lavender infused screens for those! Love it! I'm now a spoiled follower!
Thank you for your comments David. And welcome to Humble Road. My theory with the two fans is one set to inflow and the other set to exhaust. You will exchange all the air in the van a few times a minute without any excessive stress on the motors. As you now know, I am building in response to the shortcomings I have experienced with mass produced campers. Thanks for watching!
Hey Robert We have that problem too for our teardrop trailer So I found us a pack of silicon suction lids that stack onto each other. Also you can use them to put between the pots so they don't slide everywhere. I know how much you appreciate dual/multi purpose objects. Cheers and keep up your Vantastic videos! Vie 🇨🇦
Cast iron for the stovetop one can get lids!!!! Great video as always.... I’m also loving the engineering, design and ease of access you are incorporating into the build! Someone that thinks!!!!🤔🤪
I find not going over 5 while cooking on my induction stovetop, I don't burn like I did when I first started cooking on it. Boiling water 9 is fine. Bar Keepers Friend is the best. My 30yr. stainless steel pots & pans shine like new. I bought a 12" glass lid to fit my 12" cast iron pan and is fits my new induction 12" fry pan that did not come with a lid. Hope this helps.
My induction hob (IH) is dual ring, one 1800watt max and one 1000watt max. I start cooking on the high power ring then simmer on the lower power ring. Also I usually use Le Creuset cookware - heavy cast iron, which are much less likely to burn. One great advantage of IH is that little residual heat is produced. Another is that they`re much safer with auto shut-off and not much heat left when the pan is removed so if you accidentally leave a flammable item on the hob it will not ignite.
It is such a pleasure watching someone with your level of competency. It looks like the induction burner has a learning curve; I still like the fine-tuning of a fire-burner. About those ceiling screws - it gives an industrial look - is that what you want? Then again, I belong to the screws-out-of-sight school of interior design :-) The sliding cabinet doors are practical and aesthetic, and they are easy to remove. The only problem I anticipate with cabinet sliders is they will rattle when going down the road, and why are sliders always thinner than hinged cabinet doors ....
Yes, I like showing the screws for an industrial look. A nice contrast to the more delicate features of the decor. I will be using a rubber gasket to prevent the sliding doors from rattling. They are thinner than hinged doors because they occupy depth in the cabinet, rather than sitting out on the outer surface of the cabinet.
That's the problem with induction pans. They scorch the food. Listen to women when they talk about food. Tsk, tsk! Men love the novelty gadgets like induction stoves, but women have been cooking their entire lives for others. We know. Cast iron or stainless steel. Propane stove. That's the ticket. Fan look gorgeous! You left out one good reason to discard the plastic ring. It yellows with time, ugh! I have a lovely yellow ringed fan. I could paint it but then it would not match my yellowed fabric ceiling. I think i will remove it and replace with what you did here. Love the fact that you have both an inventive mind and a creative sense of style and color! The removable sectional wall panels are nothing short of brilliant! No more issues to access wiring, and you have storage below for that insulating window cover. You could also add window curtains without an issue. Really smart design. Thank you!
Living in that van will be like being in an Ansel Adams painting❤️ so anxious to see the floor and well just everything! The video where you’re cooking and the van roof is shown above your head is incredible to view. Man that ceiling and fan custom wrap are beautiful and I saw the AC unit and it’s very low profile so the gorgeous ceiling is not overpowered by a big unit. I love that you called the ceiling the “crown” of the van. Yes this van looks good enough for royalty. 👑
Thanks for mentioning Ansel and the Zone System... it has been a long time! I assume the ceiling is around Zone VIII or IX, by dove gray you mean around a IV, and thunder gray is... hmmmm... let's go with III. Am I close? Oh... van is cool too!
Thanks for an interesting video! A couple of thoughts for you..... For the hinge, have you seen the Ikea UTRUSTA horizontal hinge? Or you could use a Richelieu Easy Lift-Up Stay with a normal hinge. For the inside bottom of your cabinet (the floor) you could cut a dado/groove/channel into the bottom piece (front and back edges) and then insert a piece of wood that extends into the channel in the 8020. That would give you a clean-not-going-to-move-on-you bottom. Gravity will keep it in place. No need for Velcro!
I had to use Induction Cooktop for a while and found out that using cast iron is much more forgiving. The rapid temp change is the main culprit, the thickness of and the cast iron itself slows down that change. It can scratch the top if not careful. Great Video!
Always waiting for your next release.... and you never dissapoint !! LOVE your videos, your filming techniques, the humour , and all the detailed info you put in it. A little bit of advise for the cooking section.. A flat bottom non stick wok style pan with lid is almost all the cooking pots you´ll need. And a medium size boiling pot ( also with lid ). Finally you won´t use more on the road. You´ll usually prepare one pot meals in order to save water and effort when cleaning ;)
@@HumbleRoad There are non-stick products like ceramic that are not carcinogenic ... don´t want to mention brands but there are quite a few options free of lead, cadmium, heavy toxic metals, PFOA, PTFE and other unsafe nonstick coatings even offering 50 years of scratch resistant warranty ;) Thank you for answering. I´m a 10.000 miles away fan . Internet makes the world shrink ;) Cheers from La Paloma, Uruguay
#708! Thanks 4 sharing. Regarding your upper doors, what about magnets in the ceiling or door and metal on the the opposite. When the door is open it sticks to some rare earth magnets!
For me, I want a good quality non stick 8” fry pan and a gas flame. I use the plate I’m eating off of as a lid. An actual lid is nicer but I like things that have two functions Much as in Walden, I find one fry pan and a coffee pot does it all My entire van is 16 feet, there’s room for everything I need, however, there’s no room for things I can do away with.
So far, the most appreciated aspect of the induction cooktop is the lack of combustion. I put that frittata on a plate only for this video. Normally, I would eat them right out of the pan...
Humble Road I like to wash the pan the minute I put the food on the plate (lid). It’s far easier to wash when it’s still hot I also use that hot water to wash the rest of the dishes I have a water heater but I’m too parsimonious (lazy) to light it Washing a hot pan makes all the hot water I need Today everyone wants to do away with propane but my rig uses it for the refrigerator, the furnace and cooking, I’m stuck with it so I’ll enjoy it ,
There are 'European' hinges that will hold up the door without the need for a gas strut. AND stainless steel pans (without carcinogenic non-stick coating) need to be seasoned like you do for cast iron pans. Once seasoned, only wipe down when cleaning (no soap!).
Love these videos.I am always inspired by something you try and I am planning to try out some of your ideas in a step van conversion! So far the 80/20 framing and the acrylic sliding cabinets are my absolute favorites! Oh and the heavy mass vinyl. I am looking at spray foam insulation with the heavy mass vinyl over that since it's just loads and loads of bare metal everything. Anyway, keep up the amazing work! You are a total inspiration!
I haven't found any nesting pan set that will work with a induction cooking system... You might want to look at a good pot grabber and cut the handles off...lol? If you want to spend the money FESTOOL makes great stuff with good dust collection... Thanks for taking the time to build nice things....
Mr. Road, Your self-standards are high (Cookware discussion). Yet, as in so many of your processes, you do not allow the resulting pressure to faze your goal/your aim... (at least not in front of camera) This fact serves as strong inspiration for me, re: adjusting self-standards over hejre(Pardon the IKEA typo). ---------> For this, I thank you,
Edith Prutz yeah there are some coated ceramic pans (non stick) with stainless steel bottom ..there are complete pans now a days that can be used in gas cooker, induction, electric even on ovens etc
Why not a remote control for the fan -- keep the fingers OFF the nice white vinyl? Love the detail put into your videos and build. Certainly someone is going to thank you for those corner bumpers. I would like to see a closer up detail on how you fashioned the rubber bumpers on your cabinets.
Why not make all the upper cabinets sliders? Seems a bit odd they are different, and different colors. Can you please show how the sliders work? Love the videos and the cooking segments! 👍
I started with all cabinet doors being sliders. The cabinet over the couch will be used for larger items and I felt the framework required for sliders reduced the size of the opening too much. But I do not like the top hinge design and I am considering a French door approach. The different colors are very deliberate. I want to create distinct "rooms" within the van space. To my knowledge, something no one else has considered.
Another amazing video, George, loved it, so much professionalism, detail, and informative material. You are my inspiration for sure, well, there are a few guys on here who I have cherry picked ideas, and methods from. Why did you throw your jigsaw in the bin, did it fail? I had a hard time with my cordless jigsaw when cutting the roof holes for my x2 fans, ended up having to use my other saw.
That jig saw was a POS! It swam all over the place, could not hold it's foot plate level at 90 degrees. I had enough! I need real precision now! I bought a Bosche. Ohhh, it's so nice!
How about using a small and unobtrusive cabinet latch on the ceiling to hold the door open? Of course buyers will want gas struts because they haven't put anything in the cabinet yet.
G; have you ever done a 3500 extended, 159” wheel base, ProMaster windowless van VIDEO?? Also, what do you think about having swivel seats in the cab area, and, a solid single seat (for an infant/young child), behind the drivers’ seat? Would this seat be mounted to the floor or could it be elevated to match the cabin seats?
Your great/quality videos are why I cut the cord & save $200 a month (more beer money). I would call your van build style a Modern Industrial Craftsmen Design, but who cares your build is looking good. Sláinte
For a way to hold your cabinet doors open-- Why not a horseshoe shaped clip that you mount on the ceiling that the door handle will pop into? I wish I had a professional name for the part.
I see you have large lithium battery system but in winter times the sun just isnt there. I would opp for gas stove counter top and have portable electric induction cook top that i could put over the gas top. That way in sites with power you opp for electric cooking and off grid use gas. Theres a reason why chefs cook with gas.just my opinion. Great videos that get you thanking what if
Soak the pan for 10 min or so, scrape off the loose stuff with your plastic spatula. Sprinkle any remaining goo with baking soda. Come back and, using a spray bottle of white vinegar, spray the baking soda. Wait another 10 minutes. Should clean right up with no environmental impact. Just a plastic scrubbie should finish off any remainders.
Absolutely the way to go. As we all know, water is 'universal solvent'; if stuck food is stubborn bring to boil and let cool and should scrape right off. I see folks like barkeepers friend; me not so much. Totally agree about the lid thing; how can one cook without a lid? Thank goodness for Goodwill/Salvation Army; take your pan right in there and find lid that fits.
... George, it's not you - it's stainless steel... simply the worst to cook with imo - and fwiw, i will not buy a pan that does not come with a proper lid - period lol ... enjoyed this ~ S

Magnets to hold up the cabinet door. You could even spray paint them the color of the ceiling to blend in.

@Roger That Exactly what I was thinking. IKEA has a large fry pan lid that fits different sizes from 10 to 12 inches, too

Am I close?
Oh... van is cool too!
;-)
I am hungry......for more videos! Cooking, Building, just more George! :-)
Thanks for that advice. I will see if I can wrestle my Grandmother's cast iron pan from my wife… I may get hit with it instead!
Humble Road 😂😂😂
I think you should also have a cooking channel called, natcherly enuf, Humble Pie.
:-D
Always waiting for your next release.... and you never dissapoint !! LOVE your videos, your filming techniques, the humour , and all the detailed info you put in it.
A little bit of advise for the cooking section.. A flat bottom non stick wok style pan with lid is almost all the cooking pots you´ll need. And a medium size boiling pot ( also with lid ). Finally you won´t use more on the road. You´ll usually prepare one pot meals in order to save water and effort when cleaning ;)
Thank you for your kind words and cooking tips. :-)
I worry about non-stick being carcinogenic, though..
@@HumbleRoad There are non-stick products like ceramic that are not carcinogenic ... don´t want to mention brands but there are quite a few options free of lead, cadmium, heavy toxic metals, PFOA, PTFE and other unsafe nonstick coatings even offering 50 years of scratch resistant warranty ;)
Thank you for answering. I´m a 10.000 miles away fan . Internet makes the world shrink ;)
Cheers from La Paloma, Uruguay
Cholula is da bomb! My *favorite* pepper sauce of that sort. Nice and spicy, but not "mean" like cayenne pepper sauces.
hey I bet if you put some sort of magnet on the outside of those cabinets they might stick to the screws n the ceiling @4:15
Thanks (also) for the "making of" content, it's very interesting :-)
Glad you enjoyed it!
#708! Thanks 4 sharing. Regarding your upper doors, what about magnets in the ceiling or door and metal on the the opposite. When the door is open it sticks to some rare earth magnets!
I thought of magnets, but did not want to interrupt the visual lines of the ceiling!
Use 1/2” for the cabinet floor and route out the space for your lights and connections so you are wasting minimal space
The bar keepers soap is genuinely necessary
For me, I want a good quality non stick 8” fry pan and a gas flame. I use the plate I’m eating off of as a lid. An actual lid is nicer but I like things that have two functions
Much as in Walden, I find one fry pan and a coffee pot does it all My entire van is 16 feet, there’s room for everything I need, however, there’s no room for things I can do away with.
So far, the most appreciated aspect of the induction cooktop is the lack of combustion. I put that frittata on a plate only for this video. Normally, I would eat them right out of the pan...
Humble Road I like to wash the pan the minute I put the food on the plate (lid). It’s far easier to wash when it’s still hot I also use that hot water to wash the rest of the dishes I have a water heater but I’m too parsimonious (lazy) to light it Washing a hot pan makes all the hot water I need
Today everyone wants to do away with propane but my rig uses it for the refrigerator, the furnace and cooking, I’m stuck with it so I’ll enjoy it ,
Love your videography & editing
Tres bien!
2 questions... Why not cast iron cookware and why not magnets to hold the doors up?
I love Lee Blake’s design and execution
Solid wood worx does excellent cabinetry
But brother Humble Road is the absolute best of the best
There are 'European' hinges that will hold up the door without the need for a gas strut. AND stainless steel pans (without carcinogenic non-stick coating) need to be seasoned like you do for cast iron pans. Once seasoned, only wipe down when cleaning (no soap!).
Magma nesters also available non-stick. Easier cleanups.
I invested in a set for my wife and she LOVES THEM!! Well worth the money!!!
Dani.. Just be careful with spray foam. To thick a layer and it will warp out the sides of the van.
I haven't found any nesting pan set that will work with a induction cooking system...
You might want to look at a good pot grabber and cut the handles off...lol?
If you want to spend the money FESTOOL makes great stuff with good dust collection...
Thanks for taking the time to build nice things....
This van building thing, it appears, will be a nice new career for me. So I will slowly accumulate Festool tools… $$$
---------> For this, I thank you,
Thank you. Just go slow and think before you act!
Maybe there are non-stick frying pans out there that have a magnetic bottom? The van is looking so good!!!
Edith Prutz yeah there are some coated ceramic pans (non stick) with stainless steel bottom ..there are complete pans now a days that can be used in gas cooker, induction, electric even on ovens etc
If the cabinet handles aren't aluminum you could use magnets recessed into the ceiling to hold the doors open.
Why not a remote control for the fan -- keep the fingers OFF the nice white vinyl? Love the detail put into your videos and build. Certainly someone is going to thank you for those corner bumpers. I would like to see a closer up detail on how you fashioned the rubber bumpers on your cabinets.
I opted not to get the remote control for the fan. One less thing to malfunction.
Magnets might work on overhead cabinet
Can you put the simarine monitor in the van? I really wanna see someone do that install in a van
Spray the pot with vinegar and let it set a little bit. Ketchup also would work.
More info on window covers please....thank you.
It's coming!
Nice video setup! Where u get your lights and green screen sheet from?
Why not make all the upper cabinets sliders? Seems a bit odd they are different, and different colors. Can you please show how the sliders work? Love the videos and the cooking segments! 👍
I started with all cabinet doors being sliders. The cabinet over the couch will be used for larger items and I felt the framework required for sliders reduced the size of the opening too much. But I do not like the top hinge design and I am considering a French door approach. The different colors are very deliberate. I want to create distinct "rooms" within the van space. To my knowledge, something no one else has considered.
Great video, once again!
@@HumbleRoad Sounds like the same issue I had with mine, its a Einhell, so purchased a new DeWalt cordless Jigsaw to replace it.
How about using a small and unobtrusive cabinet latch on the ceiling to hold the door open? Of course buyers will want gas struts because they haven't put anything in the cabinet yet.
I want that door to pull open and stay open in one motion. Not; open, then latch.
@@HumbleRoad Maybe a single strut then, only wastes half the space.
15,000+ AWESOME!!
Watch the rest of my videos, Paul. All questions answered.
I know what you are talking about, there is a similar mechanism for a screen door for example.
I would be one who would benefit from those rubber bumpers on the cabinet edges. LOL.
:-D
George, how do you keep the sliding doors from moving when you step on the brakes or accelerate? What kind of latching system are you using?
rubber border inserts
Why not use magnets in the ceiling on the doors?
Perfect job George! The pan/pot situation sounds easily fixable. May I ask Where did you buy those Phillips bolts?
The SS screws and decorative washers were special ordered at a specialty screw store! Very special!
@@HumbleRoad They look beautiful!
I am just surprised that all Phillips slots are not lined up. You know: N-S/E-W pattern 😉
Ha! SEE! I am not OCD! I knew it! @@jacekpietrzak1056
