    Ahhh ... The Plus ... what memories it brings :-) I used to have two of them in the 80/90-ties ... I was responsible for them on a series of youth camps and shared my experience and ... games with the kids ... I’ve felt like a guru ... :-) And had to fix them on the field ... :-)
    And now - I’ve collected 5 or 6 Speccy Plus machines - each in excellent condition. Most of them in the original setups (with cassettes, manuals and boxes)🤪

      You should sell some to let others experience them. You would get good money you could use for something else. I have a few spectrums but nome in box etc as you pointed out and few duplicates apart from a group of 48k units in rough condition

    Well done Jan! I'm enjoying working on the Plus's recently, I find the keyboards very satisfying to disassemble and clean. I have the same issue with the Return key sticking down but I find after a clean it gets "good enough", I do think you would need a new, springy, "rubber bubbles" part to fully resolve it.

  • @borayurt66
    @borayurt66 4 года назад

    Sir Clive has always been a big fan of "looks" rather than quality. I agree with you on how good and timeless designs they came up with all the computers they made. But, when you look deeper, you can easily see the low quality manufacturing, inferior parts used, shortcuts they took to solve problems stick out like a sore thumb. Always been a fan of Spectrums, especially 48K models and it is great to see them come alive. Great video as always!

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  4 года назад +1

      Yes, they were definitely built to a price. But in the end, I guess that was a huge part of their success. And Sir Clive seems to always had the "computers for the masses" thing down even more than Commodore's Jack Tramiel. At least the machines were sold even less expensive. :)

    I have uncomfortable memories of this computer, playing on my mate's spectrum+ one day I pushed the computer back in anger at losing a game of something. I think I dislodged the joystick interface or something, black screen and it never worked again. I was not popular at his house. If you ever read this, I'm still sorry Ben, haha!

      @JanBeta  4 года назад

      Uh, that sounds horrible. Thanks for sharing the story! :D

    • @DavePoo
      @DavePoo 4 года назад

      That was a common problem, I think if you slightly dislodge the interface then it sends 5v down the wrong lines. I used to work in a computer store on a saturday (in my teens), and the owner made a lot of money from repairing broken spectrums where that had happened. Most of the time the owner had done it by plugging in the joystick port while it was on, pushing in the connecter which would push out the interface, but i'm sure there were a few anger incidents too.

    Great to see a Spectrum brought back to life! I seem to remember that the last models of the Spectrum+ don't suffer from the keyboard membrane rot. They're the ones made in Korea by Samsung, and the membrane is made of the same sort of clear plastic as the modern replacements. I think I have one somewhere, but I've lost track of my disorganised collection.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  4 года назад +1

      Ah, that might very well be. I remember seeing rubber key Spectrums produced by Samsung with slightly changed design (and maybe better components?). They are quite sought after I think.

    • @Zeem4
      @Zeem4 4 года назад

      @@JanBeta I didn't realise they made the rubber-keyed ones in Korea too, but it makes sense as they produced both models alongside each other at two different price points. Better components also seem likely, as I think the reason that they started producing them in Korea was that the earlier ones were extremely unreliable, often being dead on arrival or breaking within a few days of purchase.

      Yes! The next is an awesome piece of hardware (didn't have the chance to meet one in person yet though)! • @Fifury161
    @Fifury161 3 года назад

    Great to see someone on RUclips using an anti static wrist strap - although it's bad practice to power up a board on the anti static mat. Also whilst not critical in this application, it's not good practice to apply heat sink compound with your finger! Finally worth nothing that every 48K Spectrum shipped with faulty memory by design - (Sir) Clive Sinclair purchased all the faulty 4116 memory chips he could (they are actually 16K memory chips) as he discovered it's the upper 8K that was faulty and so the 48K Spectrum's only access the lower 8K of memory in those chips - imagine if you could access the full 128K back in the day!
    Worth noting why there is poor soldering on those chips, if you check the circuit those bad joints are actually just pads - the upper memory mapping wasn't used - that's A4, A5 & A6 which correspond to pins 10, 11 & 13. They where also hand soldered in place as they couldn't tolerate the wave soldering technique...

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  3 года назад

      The 4116s are 16 kilobit chips as far as I know, they are fully used. 8 of them make up the 16 kilobyte of lower RAM. They used the half-broken RAMs for the upper memory to my knowledge.
      Good point with the ESD mat, didn’t have any problems with it yet though, fortunately! Thanks for pointing that out.

    The spectrum should run perfectly fine on 4.9V by the way.... Most of the chips are TTL and the 5V spec is generally 4.75-5.25 for proper operation. Older 7805's are generally not that accurate. Using the Recom, Tracopower or Murata replacement modules is a very good idea though

    • @tankgrrl

      Yes, I know about the voltage. It still seemed suspiciously low to me (compared to other Speccys) and I also measured a voltage spike of around 8V on the 5V rail after turning the machine on. I've got one of those desoldering tools too, but once I have identified a RAM fault I tend to use my hot air desoldering tool to take out all the RAM chips
    the hot air desoldering doesn't seem to cause any immediate problems with the still working RAM, and only takes about 30 seconds per chip...the harder part is to clear the vias of solder which I find is easier with a traditional solder sucker n iron
    result is all RAM is then socketed, looking nice and uniform and if you have more faulty RAM than originally expected, its easy to swap those out to test on a known working machine

    At least in the 80s, the keyboard membrane usually cracked right at the end where the connectors to the PCB are. Just use a scissor and cut of the bad end a millimeter after the crack, so the rest of the membrane is still ok. You can do that two or three times until the membrane was becoming too short so you could not close the case. Then you can solder out the connector from the PCB and extend this with some ordinary wires to the PCB and glue it to the lid (be careful that this manually still fits all together). You know, back in the 80s there was no way to buy a new membrane ...

I suspect it's one of the logic chips. It wasn't the PLA or the color SRAM. And this time I should be able to work on the C64 without lifting another trace because I forgot to turn the iron temp back down after working on the ground pin.

    The foam is important - it prevents the keyboard membrane from touching grounded metal surfaces. Capacitive coupling may cause keyboard to "misbehave" when the foam is missing and membrane is too close to the metal.
    The reset switch can be removed from the case without any soldering, just pull it up (actually aside according to the switch itself).
    Replacing 7805 with a switching regulator is a good idea to limit the heat production and prolong life of a keyboard membrane.
    It is also worth to consider replacing a stock ROM with a Gosh Wonderful ROM (you could normally write BASIC commands instead of being forced to use tokens).
    P.S.
    Try playing Valley of Rains...

    I have a 128k toaster rack that has a very strange problem .... some keys dont work
    I have put a new membrane and still the problem persists
    I have tried inputting directly by shorting each keyboard pins on the board and i dont hear the "bonk" sound for some keys like the arrows
    The "enter" works so the 128k goes into "tape loader" but that's as much as I can do...
    There doesn't seem to be any corrosion on the board tracks that lead away from the keyboard sockets...
    What can it be ? A problem with the rom ? Some data port is shorted ? very strange.

    35:30 All keys should work. Make sure the tiny screws on the keyboard plate are not overtightened. I've experienced problems with new membranes when they are overtightened. Screw them in until you feel resistance (don't force it) and then unscrew them half a turn and leave them like that. They should work after.

You might just not have it aligned correctly. When this happens to me, I just loosen the larger membrane connection and push it back towards the keyboard itself. The arrow keys are just mapped to the CAPS SHIFT altered 5 6 7 & 8 keys on the old rubber keyboard. It looked like your SD Card interface was set up to use 6 7 8 9 & 0 which is the Sinclair Joystick standard, the joystick mapping to those numbers directly (without CAPS SHIFT). There were three interface types for joysticks, the main 2 everyone who uses Spectrum emulation knows of are Sinclair and Kempston. The third was called Cursor and simply mapped to the same as the arrow keys on the Plus model, I.E. the CAPS SHIFTed 5 6 7 & 8 with 0 for fire if my memory serves me right.

If the 5v pin was not properly connected to the 4116 it may allow you to "see" a higher voltage on that pin. I've never seen a 7805 genuinely fail in a flaky state like that where one second you have 8v then suddenly everything is all good :-)
