      I really enjoy your vidoes and have learned a lot from them. I have a little feedback about this video; I found the volume of the music too loud and in the foreground, it was distracting and was more of a hindrance than nice cozy vibes in the background. To hear you easier, I tried raising the volume but it just made it overall too loud with the music.

    My main issue is the way the shop is structured, not necessarily the price. They had promised to not have predatory or deceptive practices with their shop and that is exactly what they did by requiring you to by coins to pay for in shop items. The amount of coins you buy will end up leaving you leftover currency but not enough to make more purchases so it will force you to spend more than just the cost of an outfit. I would have been fine if each outfit just costed a certain amount of money, no coins necessary or if they had never came out and made it such a big deal that they weren’t going to follow predatory practices with their game. I felt like they marketed the game a specific way to develop hype then lied 😢

    • @wronggeometry
      @wronggeometry 10 месяцев назад +30

      Exactly! Also, as soon as real money is converted to game currency it creates a sense of detachment from what is really being spent. I'd rather just pay £30 for a game and ,aybe get to pick a couple of 'exclusive' outfits on purchase and be done with it. This is like paying for a sims expansion pack to get a cat and a couple of outfits.

      I agree! I do not like when game devs have their own currency which you buy with actual money. If they have a currency that is purely in game, obviously that's fine. If they're going to have a shop which requires the use of actual money they should price the items using actual money. Buying the coins in packages sucks because then you have left over and are forced to buy more to be able to spend your leftover. It's going to turn it all into a popularity contest to see who has the most outfits, animals, etc...and this is especially stressful for parents who have kids constantly asking them for money to spend on the game. Which, of course, is what the devs are relying on. I think they should just charge for the game & DLCs rather than having a store.

    I don't mind that Palia has a premium shop since the game is free to play, however if the items in the shop continue to be so overpriced, I won't be buying any. They will need to make the prices more reasonable if they want any of my money. I just really hope that the devs aren't leaving out the tailoring skill just to force people to buy all their clothes from the premium shop because the game really needs tailoring.

  • @PristinePanda
    @PristinePanda 10 месяцев назад +39

    i think its crazy how expensive the shop is during a CLOSED BETA. we dont even know what the game is going to be like when its done, how could i possibly spend that kind of money on it right now. i hate in game currencies why cant the items just be bought for a set price. in game currencies make make it difficult to just buy the amount you need instead you end up having to usually buy more than you need which is definitely scummy imo. im pretty much only interested in the afternoon tea set and one of the cats, but i will wait until the game is fully released before pumping any money into it. that being said i am happy that its only cosmetics but it will eventually separate the playerbase into those who spend money to look better and those that dont. This happens in every game like this, so i hope the add in clothing options that are still cute for F2P players.

  • @bailey6195

    I really like Palia, and when I started, I wanted to support the devs financially since the game was free. I hesitated to buy anything in the premium shop at first because I did not like any of the outfits, and the details are blurry when playing on low settings (which is interesting because nothing else in the world is that blurry at low settings). When cats were introduced was really when I was more tempted to use the premium shop, but it felt a little silly if the coins were not going to be actually spent on something. Also, I got anxious knowing if I purchased the Palia coins bundle and bought something, there would always be a small number of coins left over. I realized that I would rather have an upfront cost than be tempted to pour more money into the game with every update. I would love to see Palia implement some of the suggestions you and other community members have made.

  • @tsubelog01
    @tsubelog01 10 месяцев назад +29

    General microtransaction discussion aside, I think the Palia premium store currency bundles are not a nice way to go about it because you can't buy just enough currency for one outfit or a outfit bundle and are left with "change" or leftovers which you are motivated to spend on something else, but that something else costs just a bit more than what you have, hence you have to purchase another bundle to make up the difference, then rinse repeat. This is a very common practice but it is also predatory and leaves a bad taste. It goes against the idea of a game that's supposed to provide a cozy, relaxed atmosphere and a positive social environment when the monetization scheme is predatory and divides the community into those who have a lot of money to spend on cosmetics and those who do not.
    Another gripe I have is that the outfits color schemes are predetermined. For the price they are charging, they should be freely dyed to reflect your style and taste.

    I think the items are way over priced - Palia might be FTP, but a single one of these outfits cost more than many of the really good cosy farm sims out there, and I’d rather buy one of those games for that money. I think the devs would sell more if the items cost less. I don’t like micro-transactions personally, I’d rather pay up front and get a full experience, but I respect the devs right to use them of course. No one is forced to shop, after all.

      yeah I don't mind cosmetic microtransactions in games, but when they wanna charge $20-30 for a single outfit, thats ridiculous. I would love to spend a bunch of money on a good FTP game, but when they make it so pricey they're gonna get less money.

    I don’t mind paying for items in a free to play game. I love it. I’m more annoyed at Disney for charging for items when the game isn’t free to play in any shape or form. Palia just has the cozy game vibes that keep me going back for more. If people don’t want to play because of this, it’s sad, because it has so much more to offer than just cosmetics.

      Imagine playing for a game like World of Warcraft: 50£ expansion, 12£ monthly subscription and also a shop to buy pets, mounts, transmogs... I could see Palia aspiring to something like the subscription even if the game is free. MMOs are too tempting for developers 😢

      I don't even mind purchaseable cosmetics in games I paid for, i just hate premium currencies that leave you with leftovers so you keep buying more. I am not ok with premium shops which are as expensive as Palia’s. This is also why I won’t play DDV. I’d rather pay the price for developers think the game is worth up front than continue to sink money into it. I do not count DLCs in this btw - I am happy to pay for those because you know what you are buying up front. I also don’t like when games use their own “coins” in premium shops - it’s an under hand and sneaky way to get people to spend more actual money. I agree with another RUclipsr (wickedy) that they should have affordable options at the very least. You can get entire games for what they are charging for a single set of outfits. Ultimately, I think this looks like a really fun game and I hope the expensive store doesn’t cause people to not want to play or divide the community. It would be great to see the developers make some changes so everyone can enjoy the premium shop!

    I HATE that gaming companies are doing this. Just let me pay the typical $60, and give me all the cosmetic items. Dreamlight Valley cost me $80, and they still want me to pay for cosmetic items? Nah. Id happily drop $60 on Palia to get everything all at once. Im good with DLC. If the developers wanna make money on their hard work, charge the $60 upfront. Its ridiculous to ask a player to spend $50 for 3 outfits and 4 cats.

    having a premium shop is fine the devs have to make money somehow, but i think the fact theyve gone back on whats been promised and even againt there own posted buissness model of "We don’t want to monetize through tricks. Our products should be able to stand on their own as valuable purchases. In general, our store will have items that are directly purchasable" is a huge red flag and makes me worry for the future. Palia coins are a terrible idea and just feel scummy, if you want to change $20 for an outfit then charge $20 instead of its only $12 worth of Palia coins! but youll need to buy the $20 coin bundle to have enough.

    I agree with you for the most part that microtransactions in a free to play game are not necessarily a bad thing. The problem I have is that it feels like games often hide good outfit designs behind pay walls instead of just making the default outfits look good. A fair alternative would be like you said, give fans a way to unlock these cosmetics through quests so we can choose if we want to grind or just pay the cost. Also not a fan of the outfit coloring system. Why not just give us a color slider so we can all have more options and uniqueness to our characters?

      If this works like any other shop--and I've dealt with a lot of them for both microtransactions and gacha crap--they don't want a bunch of buyers. They want a large sum of money from a handful of 'whales'. I'll never understand why they go that route--some kinda industry wide pricing structure like how gas stays the same in an area, perhaps?--but they do.

      I agree I wish they would go this route! I might one time buy a $5 pet or outfit bundle to support the developers, but no way I’m spending $10-40 for any one thing. I get a few things in the expensive range, but not everything.

    • @Zectifin

      thats exactly how it works. the Deep Rock Galactic devs are making a bunch from their cosmetic DLC packs. they're like $6-8 for 4 skins (one per class) a color for your skins and weapons, and some variety of weapon skins or pickaxe parts. Hell its a paid game, but its fanbase doesn't feel like its shitty because they are so cheap and we're helping funding ongoing development.
      Making things so expensive makes them seem money hungry. My gf and I were planning on playing palia a ton and she was already planning on forking over money for cosmetics, when we saw the prices she just quit and I never even installed it. We were looking forward to it so much and that just put a really bad taste in our mouths.

    Honestly, I am disappointed in their shop prices, but at the end of the day I don’t mind as long as it stays purely cosmetic with outfits and pets. I especially don’t like the coin bundle tactics to make you spend more money. Each outfit and bundle should be directly purchasable with cash.
    Overall though I would’ve preferred if they just charged a flat $15-30 fee for the game and have everything available in game. Heck I’d even take them playing two minutes of ads every time you log in.
    I love the game and want to support the devs, but paying that much for an outfit is just not justifiable for me

    Of course, the premium outfits I like in Palia are the most expensive. lol. But I could see myself putting some money into it to support the devs. The cats are cute, but not a big draw for me. Now if there was a dog... that'd be a different story. 😉
    I 100% agree that there should be a way to slowly earn premium coins in-game. That way no one feels truly left out. It'll just take a lot of time to get the premium items you want.

    Pet companions aren't just cosmetic because they provide companionship. It doesn't really matter if you can't directly interact with it. It interacts with you by following you around. It elicits different emotions than just an outfit of a painting or flower or something truly strictly cosmetic. They definitively need a free pet version of some sort. Making pets paid only is just mean.

    I personally don’t have an issue with the micro transactions. The game is free to play and it’s quite a large (and growing) game with a lot to do. They talked about the micro transactions from the beginning and should be expected for a game that’s totally free. Obviously they want to have incentive for ppl to want to purchase items (thus the cats). Being someone who will occasionally use real money for a micro transaction, I like that I could eventually get all the cats. You don’t have to spend all of that money right now to get them. Spend a little here and there and over time you’ll get them. Plus they have said they have a goal of 24 updates a year. That’s wild and so exciting!! I have been waiting for a game to give us endless updates. I want to support that drive!!

      I see what you're saying and understand you, we have to pay skins in pretty most all of the games nowadays. The question here is not the fact that we have to pay for a skin but yes the price of it. Its kinda almost a price of a game. And the bad thing is that they make you buy coins twice because buying the coins once is not enough for one skin.

    I wouldn't mind the cash shop but it is way too pricy imo. I wish they would at least offer some more affordable items (like 5-10 $). Also, paywalling the pets was kind of a greedy move. They could just have made one "basic" free pet and then just sell the more fancy ones. Many people were really disappointed that they couldn't get one. Not everyone can afford to spend 30+ $ on cosmetics and not everyone has a credit card (at least not here in Europe) which is the only way of buying coins. I'm afraid the high prices, paywalling game features and the inaccessibility of the shop will drive many players away from the game.

    The "sale" price of bubdles is bs. In small print it says if you buy 1 outfit, the rest of the outfits in the set will be 50% off. So if you buy the full set at any time in whatever order, it will cost the same as "discounted" price of the bundle. Basically, my point is, theres no real point in buying the bundles. It's just a scam to get people to spend more money.

    Here is how I see premium items in free to play games as a gamer with disabilities. I am glad that I get to try the game. If I don't like the game I can walk away without consequence. If I do like the gam, not only do I get to have the game; I also get to choose custom picked, for me by me, visual cosmetics for my character, knowing I'm buying them for something I'm playing. They need to be priced in a way I view as fair. But so long as they are, and they are not screwing up a game at large, I am generally happy to patron games that I like. Far better, for me, than paying for a game and finding out I physically cannot play it.

    The main point of a cozy game is to look cute, it's the whole thing about a game like this is the cosmetics. Like maybe the dating sim elements but at the price of getting 4 cats and like 1 expensive outfit I could buy another cozy game with no microtransactions on release date or like 4 older ones. All with faster progression that isn't intentionally slowed so that I am more likely to want to change my outfit. I think the game doesn't need to be F2P if they wanna run an MMO they could charge a monthly fee but if they really need to be F2P there is many better models.

I will say that I usually spend hundreds on cosmetics in games I love.. Also the bundles are practically one outfit each with just 3 diff sets of color & usually unnoticeable pattern differences. It's a bad value imo.. and the pet debauchery could have been prevented just by giving a short and quick quest to earn Sandy or even a cat of our choosing and did w.e. with the rest of them. I think of it as its a free game which looks better than some triple A games that you pay £50/$60 for normally so spending less than £30/$40 for some outfits to get the pets and the game is an amazing deal and I dont understand the fuss everyone is making over this. The game is the best cozy game I've played in along time since animal crossing which cost £50/ $60 on release then another ££25 /$35 for the dlc. What people need to remember is that no free game is ever going to be free number 1 and number 2 play the game without buying the outfits the game is great without paying a thing anyway just enjoy it. But for those who chose to buy an outfit and it helps give back to the people who spents years of hardwork making the game and as a thank you from the devs they are offering you the 4 pets right now which is really cool. But according to my friend who's a part of the partner program of palia they will be bringing more for free later on.

    I don't understand if this game is in beta why is there a cash shop? Beta normally is used to test your game. This game feels more like early access and they need our money to make more content.
    And slapping a 60 dollar price tag on this game really isn't worth it at all. Only 2 maps to explore. Compare this to other mmo's. Guild Wars 2 had 25 maps to explore + 6 cities when that launched.

    While I don’t mind microtransactions (I’ve spent my fair share of money in games like Fall Guys and Sky) I don’t like the whole “coin” system, especially with the coins not being able to be used or earned anywhere aside from in the premium shop. I’d rather have each outfit be at a set price. Also locking pets, a feature so many wanted, behind a paywall feels exploitative
    Sky does it well since while you can buy candles (it’s in-game currency) you’re still easily able to earn those by playing the game, completing daily quest, etc. They even recently did an update where they added “event currency” where when there was an event you’d be able to earn currency for it by partaking in activities or finding them around the event area. This currency could not be purchased with money and only ever rarely with in-game currency. It was great for being able to partake in an even but still ge able to save candles for other things like returning emotes, outfits, etc.

    Microtransactions are definitely necessary to keep a game free to play and ad free. And I'm totally fine with the outfits being paid currency only. The pets, like others say, aren't purely cosmetic even if they don't have a built in function. So having at least one that is available for free through effort and grinding would be the way to go imo.
    I also don't like the way the shop is handled. Converting money into coins is the exact predatory practice I hate to see because it's used to make purchasing items feel less like you're spending real money. I'd much rather prefer a direct real currency price tag on the store items than have to go through coins.
    To reiterate, I am very much okay with free games having in game purchases because how else are they supposed to exist. But not like this.

    Generally I'm fine with the concept, though the outfits are a bit expensive. I'd like to see them have accessories as well for a lot less coins. BUT what really irks me is seeing the USD prices compared to CAD... we're used to paying 1.5x (which is irritating enough since that's WAY above the 10 yr average exchange rate of 1.2) but 1.6x really burns. There's not exactly export or shipping fees involved...

The way I see it you can’t run a game without $$, you can’t pay the devs without $$, you can’t update etc without money lol. So there is no difference us paying $30+ for Disney Dreamlight in beta then spending the same or almost the same for Palia…..and it’s just outfits not how quests are locked behind like Disney and no battle pass. So buy a bundle spend it in a couple outfits, support the devs and that’s that. PLUS with the options of making your own outfits soon the shop seems less of a big deal. Buy the $5 pack get a cat and support the devs! ❤😂

    I don't know if it should still be called microtransactions when two outfits set you back the price of a complete game.
    I'm not opposed to microtransactions in general, free-to-play games have to make their money somehow.
    But the viewpoint "You don't HAVE to buy it" falls way short in my opinion. While that's true, I just detest it when games use methods to trick people into buying more or not realizing how much things cost. Like the obfuscation of real prices by in-game currency, the bonuses when buying more or not offering a transparent real-money conversion. Just because the tactics are common doesn't make them less manipulative and predatory.
    And that's on top of the outfit prices in general here which are insane.

  • @WiffGiff
    @WiffGiff 10 месяцев назад +6

    To answer the question of the title of the video: yes, the prices for the cosmetics are ridiculously high. Incredibly so.
    They use some of the most typical manipulation tactics there are and obviously more are to come.
    It’s clear they are going after a less experienced audience that has no issue sinking whale like money in the game, with out realizing it.
    Wouldn’t surprise if pay-to-progress will come soon, since that is a lucrative tactic.
    And no: free to play is no good excuse. Free to play always come with some form of manipulation. This game is full of flags.
    Their discord is also quite something.
    The mods just ban those who either complain about the mods or are complaining about the prices in the shop. Those who report bugs also get banned.
    However they don’t ban those who say racist and homophobic stuff.
    Very cozy indeed.

    My personal gold standard on how to monetize F2P games is Warframe from Digital Extremes. It gives you the ability to trade farmable items for premium currency.
    The devs from Singularity 6 might want to follow suite. Even Wayfinder got inspired by them.
    While I play some gacha games as well, it's quite unfortunate that they are starting to become the norm. So the likes of Warframe and Wayfinder should be morr common for f2p games.

  • @jessirarara
    @jessirarara 10 месяцев назад

    I honestly couldn't care less about the premium shop. It's strictly cosmetic. I don't care. At the moment I don't want to put money into the shop until I know I will be a long term player and not just play it obsessively for a month and then drop it forever. Otherwise I would drop some money for some of the outfits. In fact I definitely will at some point I'm sure. My being hesitant in making a purchase at the moment is less about the price... and more that that's a high price tag for a game that I don't know where it's going yet. If there was more stuff that was like $10 I'd go ahead and buy it because if the game doesn't keep my interest I can at least say "Hey I gave them a bit of money to say thanks for the good times." But at the pricetags they have... I'm going to wait to see how I feel about the game a month or two from now before I make a purchase.
    F2P games NEED to have microtransactions. Especially a game like this because they have to be able to maintain servers. I'm 100% behind them having the shop because if they didn't we wouldn't get to keep the game.
    I'm not a fan of the pricing or how the coins are priced, but it doesn't matter in the end because it does not hurt me in any way to just... not buy them. It will not hurt my gameplay. It will not hurt my experience. The pricing affects me in zero ways because either I'm willing to buy them or I'm not and that affects no one but S6. The only effect it has on me is I just don't have a useless cat or the outfits I think look neat and neither of those mean anything.
    I would be upset if the cats DID SOMETHING. If they were interactable or if they did something to help me. THEN I would be upset about the cats. They don't tho. They do nothing. I'd be upset if I paid for the game and they had these transactions. I'd be upset if they were putting actual quests or storylines behind paywalls (looking at you Dreamlight).
    But in the mean time I don't care because the only people being hurt by the pricing are S6 because they are getting less money since players who have issue with the pricing or people with less money to burn aren't buying the cosmetics. Having SOME cheaper stuff would make it so people could support the game even if they don't have much to spare.

    I don't want free to play. Let me buy the game and not throw fees in my face or gate keep low income folks. It makes you not want to play the game when you feel bad about your disabilities, financial situation, and life struggles. The game is supposed to be escapism for that, but the in game clothing store leading me to a real life cost clothes felt like a slap in the face and immersion breaking.
    the devs deserve to make money. But if you do only cosmetics, it will quickly seperate the poor people from the rich people just like in real life. Doesn't sound so cozy anymore, does it? I'd feel better if I could turn off online mode, close out the server and not even see people walking around, with all the stuff I can't buy. Real life has that enough you know? It's just a reminder of bad stuff, that we use these games to not think about. If they had in time/work in game to earn at least some cool/custom outfits, maybe make some select premium, but if all the normal clothes isn't that great, that kind sucks too.

Even if I save slow if I get a dragon ya it’s like over 1000. so if they release like a $50 to $80 deal of certain items? Then ugh actually that’s a lot to. Ok if your a dev on discord can you just lol pitch a low budget idea for outside the states? Like new tools, one peice of cholthes non special but anything. A pet and … ok maybe not a pet we have been waiting a lot and ya the cats puls dragons. Ya a tool, an outfit low design but cool. And something else?

    Its up to you as a person if u wanna pay or not.
    its a free game,they somehow need to get some kind of income.
    I rather have it like this, then pay 50-70 dollars for the game.
    and its up to me as a person if i wanna use my money on the outfits,wich I did already.
    For me..its like I give u some support with my money, i get outfit and pet as a bonus back.
    And for all we know, maybe in the future event. we need to collect some certain stuff/mats or so.
    and get a pet, new outfits etc. We never know.
    YES..the outfits are expensive. but thats in every mmo these days. atleast its not that we need to pay battlepass each month to keep up with ppl or get more exp.
    its really up to each of us. if we wanna pay or not.
    Ps: I think it was nice of them to give us the pet. even when we already bought outfits before the pets. we still got them.
    some company's would want u to buy again to get it. So thats nice of them ^^

    Ugh nevermind. Bring out a lie buget thing for only people outside of states. So they don’t lose money. I’d donate a whole 40 if I got something reasonable. Yes exactly they don’t deserve a function…. Wait what about the places???? ok I get what your saying you mean that it’s not like you can do something I can’t. It’s a rich person world. But what about the new places??? lol

    I won’t support the Palia devs when they treat ftp players like a second thought. Ftp make up a majority of their player base.

    I feel like I would really like the game if I played it. I will not play it because they are trying to normalize scammy mobile game monetization tactics in PC and console gaming. Why the confusing in-game currency and bundles? No sir, not going to do this. I will pay you in real dollars or not at all.

    “Do we like micro transactions in free to play games?” 🤨. How else is a free to play game financed? Premium shops, micro transactions LITERALLY do not affect you at all. It’s our own desire that frustrates. We want developers to work on games over a period of time - they need income over a period of time. Multiplayer servers cost over time. Short of advertising, or subscription fees, cosmetic micro transactions is the most consumer friendly method. What frustrates me more is the lack of contentment.

      With respect, the Palia developers raised over 30 million dollars on Kickstarter to fund the game.

      How are micro transactions the most consumer friendly method? I would argue a one time price upfront ($30-$50) is the most friendly in that a person gets why they pay for without hidden fees and gambling mechanics. Also, obfuscating the currency is about as low as a dev can get in terms of not being upfront with consumers. These FTP game developers hire psychologists to learn how to get their consumer base to spend as much as possible without realizing it- how is that friendly?
