  • Aquarium Red Devil cichlid tank care is hard sometimes because these fish are known to be aggressive. This is the red devil food I was talking about. It’s a blend of ten different foods together. A company on amazon sells the food this way. Variety ALWAYS is the best.
    More Replies and questions:
    I feed some of my fish sea weed delight frozen food if i let the power filter on is gonna cause a big mess. In one of my old tanks I would because the frozen food would get sucked up before the fish had a chance to eat it, especially the bottom feeders.
    Nope. Spreads it around better. Not everyone catches on so fast. My birchir takes a few minutes to take the hint. And the spotted ralph. I think it all depends on how voracious the fish are in your tank i have a jewel cichlid, JD, 2 blood parrots and a Red Severum and within 30 seconds there is not a drop of food in sight, if you have all mollies and guppies, you may have to. All depends on the fish you are keeping.
    I feed right in front of canister output. So food is spread everywhere so all my fish get a chance. My discus get a better feed this way than competing with neons and Columbian tetras. My africans in 5 seconds there is no food if we are talking of the pellets lol but the frozen food is diferente it spreads very quickly.
    Red Devil cichlid Care info. No, I have a sponge pre-filter so if i'm feeding flake it collects there then the fish eat off the filter. Turning of filters deprives good bacteria of oxygen after 1/2 hour it starts to die, if you forget to turn it back on 4 hours and it's pretty much half dead. Too lazy to turn filters off ehen I feed, and I am entirely too poor to pay someone else to turn my filters on and off for me.
    Only when I was feeding my betta in the 10 gallon. The filter was a bit strong and would spin the food and was funny and sad watching him try to chase it down. Curious why one would turn off the filter during feeding? I never have...is it better to turn it off? What’s the rational behind it?
    I also use frozen brine shrimp with spirulina, frozen mysis shrimp and frozen blood worms... Still the fish get what the artificial plants don't catch. Never seen the HOBs suck it up. Not a bit. They finish the chunk of sea weed and I take out the clip and rinse for the next day. I have 2 clips so 2 chunks a day. If they rip the chunk off I simply grab the chunk and hand feed it to my venustus and blood parrot. They are the only ones who will eat from my hand. Lol
    Once I move my fish to the upgrade there will be a sump and pumps attached. I will see how the frozen foods end up but so far with HOBs the fish get all or most of their foods. I find so much wasted food at WC too. Lol Ok I’m looking for advice on stocking a new tank! Not sure what I want to stock the tank with. Not sure if I want Africans or central or South American cichlids or maybe something else but definitely not discus! Not gonna put a million neon tetras in there either lol. But I want fish with good color and some that can get a good size! I will start small and let them grow in the tank! This is going to be a display tank so the fish need to look good and have good color! Any and all suggestions welcome! Thanks!
    Doooo it haha. It's super cool and not the standard fish people usually use. It's different and cool BECAUSE it's different. Sure you could scape and get the same old fish everyone commonly does. But blah. If I had room I'd have an angel tank with all my Crypts, and a shell dweller tank.
    I think so too. If you did a timelapse and put it on youtube or sold fry you could probably even make some money. I've had fish since I was a kid and can say that big fish are cool but usually lack interesting behavior. I've got an oscar tank and a convict tank and the convicts are always breeding and picking around and moving rocks. The oscars do nothing but float at the top and beg for food.
    One of our females had this baby (we found it down swimming around our substrate, caught it and put her in the box we actually bought today, preparing for her to birth. How many babies do they usually have? And what do I need to feed them? How will I know when she's done and I can remove her from the nursery box? First time with fry.

    Hey Palmer do you use a wavemaker or a powerhead to add current in your monster tank?

    • @fishrrelaxing9361
      @fishrrelaxing9361 6 лет назад +1

      Alberto Sadler I’m not Palmer but I use wavemakers with controllers.. you don’t gain much from a constant steady flow always of the same intensity in the same direction.. I recommend jabeo PP wavemakers.. you can pair two together and control them from one controller that comes with them for very reasonable cost compared to most.. I use the PP8 on all my tanks.. the smaller ones are only a couple dollars cheaper. The pp8 still flows 2100gph. The weak link is the controllers if you get them wet but they are cheap to replace. I used to use standard constant flow circulation pumps like the sunsun jvp110 (which is a great value and a workhorse long as you clean the impeller ever couple weeks) but I’ve come to learn constant flow makes for dead spots or bare spots where the water flow is high.. with wavemakers you can vary the flow to a random pattern so intensity and flow is always changing.. even at 2100gph I think mine use like 5 watts power lol.. technically the pp8 is rated for a 40-60g tank but that’s a saltwater raring.. I find two are about perfect on a 125 and 1 is more then enough for anything smaller but can be turned down. They make a pp4 and pp6 for smaller tanks but they are $42 or so and the pp8 has way more flow and only $48-49 lol

    Thanks for all the videos on your experiences with American cichlids. They are the best on you tube in my opinion. You linked to a video of a girl who had at least 7 or 8 nice sized red devils and midas in the same tank feeding. May have been two other hybrids in there. My question is did she raise all of them together from juveniles or did she add when they were already bigger? I have a 180 I'm getting ready to cycle and have one red devil in a 40 breeder about 8 to 9 inches now. I would like to move him to the 180 but obviously I want more than one fish in there? Would you recommend putting him in with multiple RD's and Midas? If yes how would I go about adding him and the others to the tank? And should they all be of equal size? Thanks, Louis

    • @PalmerAquatics
      @PalmerAquatics  6 лет назад

      Louis Castaldi - not all were raised together. I have a ton of videos on how to control aggression. It can be done!

      I believe it can be too! just not sure if I should put him in the tank first then add the others? Or add him last? I know you added a bunch to your tank and it dispersed the aggression.

    You got that right. MN is rough for fish keepers. In the Twin Cities we have no decent LFS in the south metro. Have to drive to Quality Aquatics in a Circle Pines or Forest Lake. In addition, 90% of the hobbyists in this market keep Lake Malawi African Guppies 🤣. MAS (Minnesota Aquarium Society) should be renamed to MACS (Minnesota African Cichlid Society).

    $20?!?! People try and give them away here in southern California you can commonly find babies free-$10 dollars max and adults are almost always free. It's always interested me how the market is so different across the USA. I also agree with you about the prices being washed out with the over breeding and selling. What people don't understand is that you should be breeding and selectively picking the best of the best and culling the rest. Sounds very cruel but that's the only way to keep our gene pools refined. In the wild natural selection takes care of that for us. But in captivity breeding terrible quality to terrible quality over and over and selling all the offspring will only wash out all the good genes shoot the prices way down and give us in the end way lower quality of fish.

    Theres videos on here of labiatus kicking red bellies asses. I keep amphs and would put my money on the labiatus for unrelenting aggression. I get that the piranha has much more formidable teeth but they are skittish as hell. Maybe and only maybe would I ever bet on a red belly and that's in a pack when juvenile. I keep a male black diamond rhombues(black piranha) and whilst his jaws are way way more powerful I'd put my money on my dovii, even the females would would get my bet any day. Piranhas suck ass if you think your getting an aggressive bad ass fish think again. I only keep the rhomb to help cull unwanted fry
