For $10 the splitter is a useful luxury. I use it to relieve pressure off the connected line, so I don't get sprayed disconnecting the hose. Its also good for a quick outside hand or shoe wash. Reason you see them at some campgrounds, is because someone before you forgot to take it with them.
We don't full time, but have started doing 2 week trips. Bought a $300 Giant (brand) washer and a foldable clothes tree. 1st time in 30 years of camping. Momentum had washer hook ups so installation was easy. Unit only weights 50 lbs. Cotton takes a while to air dry, but sports clothes air dry in hours.
Vent covers make good gifts for birthdays, Christmas etc. Not a must have, but they will prevent a monsoon in the camper that time you forget to close a vent and it storms.

For us the washer and dryer combo is a necessity, we were two years into full time rv living without one, and are now upgrading to a rig that has a washer dryer combo. We are both in Healthcare so we have 2 wardrobes, one for street clothes and then we have our scrubs, since were limited on space we only have enough scrubs for a week of work and due to the job you can't wear them multiple times without washing, so we do laundry every week. The cost of laundry mats added up as well as the time you had to spend sitting in the laundry mat, and we were constantly going to the bank or stores to get change, during covid the coin shortage made it really difficult, and several times we had our clothes stolen from the laundrymat when we just stepped outside for a few minutes, we also had a dryer incident at a laundry mat that melted all our fuzzy sweatpants, we spent so much money replacing all the clothes we lost. So thats something to consider. Love your channel and great tips!

    • @HappilyEverHanks
      @HappilyEverHanks  3 года назад +3

Ugh no!! These are things we always think about when it comes to laundry! But you did it right, tried it out without having a washer dryer and realized it wasn't working out. Hopefully more people do that and give it a chance instead of buying a million things!! We someday may still get one but at least we tried to make it last as long as possible 😃Yes the 2 sets of wardrobes for us is a pain too! Thanks for the comment and feedback! ~Renee & Kyle

Wish we'd found you guys, and especially this video, before we wasted so much money! We fell for the backup (and side) camera(s), water splitter, and hubby is eyeing vent covers right now! You're so right about these items. The cameras were our most expensive purchase, and we only used them several times in the beginning. Their purchase stemmed mostly from hubby's newbie fears of what other drivers were doing. Are they too close to our rig? Are we clearing that stop sign? Now, we don't even bother syncing the Furrion cameras.
As for the generator, we're "yes and no". We never boondock. HOWEVER, just this past 4th of July, when even the asphalt was melting here in Georgia, the brand new campground we were staying in lost power around 4pm on the 4th! We were getting ready to go see the Elvis impersonator perform at the clubhouse. I was drying my hair, hubby was watching formula 1 racing, and suddenly everything went still and dark. Hubby decides my hairdryer was to blame, and he's right in the middle of his "20 amps, 20 amps, 12 amps, and 12 amps do NOT equal 50 amps" lecture when campground maintenance knocks on our door.
Our entire section of the campground lost power. (I couldn't help but chuckle; it wasn't my fault after all professor.) We left to go out to eat, but ridge was still hot and dark on our return. It took the electric company 6 hours to restore power! Our ice cream and popsicles were melted all over the freezer, and we had to throw out sandwich meat and mayonnaise. I have to say a generator would have been a blessing. Elvis impersonator put on a really good show. (We found out later he was also the pool contractor who put in the pools at this campground!)
Outside cooler is a necessity for us. It keeps grandkids from breezing in and out of air-conditioning to get a drink, plus all the flies that find their way into the RV are just one more problem. Just our 2 cents.

We're watching your June 16th, 2022 video where you mentioned Taolna Ridge RV Resort. That's where we were on July 4th!! We couldn't believe it! We love Talona Ridge!
Losing power was part of the growing pains for such a new campground. Fortunately it was only along our street on Falcon Ridge, and the Talona Ridge staff were so great. Not only did the campground offer to move everyone to a different lot, they gave all the campers who lost power 2 free nights on their next visit!
Talona Ridge and every staff member are genuinely friendly and accommodating. We loved the Mimosa cart coming around every morning and the Margarita cart coming around every afternoon! They had food trucks and live entertainment every evening!
Our golf cart won first prize in the 4th of July golf cart parade, and we got 25% off a future stay! The owners have a grand vision for Talona Ridge as we feel blessed to have it only 30 miles from our home.

This may have been better titled "things you don't need if you never boondock". The generator is a must if you don't have sufficient solar/batteries and the greywater tote saves you from breaking down the entire camp to drain both the grey and the black. Remember, you get to stay for 14-15 days on most BLM land. Super helpful if you have the room for it. Great video, thanks!

To comment on the washer/dryer subject. I don't have the option to add them to my rig, but, I did purchase a small hand crank washing device (I think it was around $60) and a dryer rack. I'm not out on the road yet, so I have not used them. My plan is to primarily be boondocking, so felt it will be needed so that if I needed a quick wash I will have it.

I realize this is an old video, but....First of all, Doug & I just LOVE you guys and your videos! Secondly, I never thought about the weight issue of the washer and dryer. We have been stable (sitting in one place until we retire) for going on 8 years now. We only have about 2 left before hitting the road. One thing I will say to those who can't live without a washer/dryer. I do not like my all in one. I really wish we had gone for the more space taking, stackable washer and dryer. The all in one was 1,500 and takes hours even for a very small load depending on what you're washing. ie: towels or jeans vs. T-shirts and undergarments. 🤷‍♀️

  • @GeorgeSipe
    @GeorgeSipe 3 года назад +6

Great topic. I think it boils down to absolutely must have and the much, much larger "to be determined by experience".
That second category will sort itself after a few trips. In it there are things that will make the experience nicer, but you can not reliably tell which those are without the experience of your exact camper, family, and camping style.
In the buy right now category are (1) a safe hitch, (2) a TPMS, (3) decent electrical protection, (4) water pressure regulation. These items are insurance you really need and do not want to learn the hard way (huge expense and/or safety risk).
Our camper is relatively small (23' Winnebago Micro Minnie) and I thought I would need a backup camera, particularly with no experience ever doing it and no experience even driving a truck (F150). I held off and found I don't need it. In fact, it would probably be a distraction for me. My spotter is far superior to a tiny screen and I can see her in the mirrors where I am looking anyway.
I got a water splitter after some experience. I couple it with a 3' steel-wrapped hose and spray nozzle. It is inexpensive, has full pressure, and handy during camping (dog paws, shoes, etc) and hosing-off other hoses, electrical cord, leveling blocks, etc. at tear-down.
On the gray water tote topic -- we just got one but haven't used it yet. We generally camp for 2-4 nights and have smallish holding tanks (25 gal ea). We can live within that, but the tote will allow more showers so it is a nicety.

    • @HappilyEverHanks
      @HappilyEverHanks  3 года назад +1

Great, love how you make all of these items work for you! So true, people need the must need/safety items and then the rest can be determined based on how they camp. Thanks for the comment and sharing your insight! Hope to hear from you again in the future 😃~Renee & Kyle

I knew I was only boondocking for 4days and could wait to buy a sewer hose. I did live in my rig for a few months before taking her cross the US, so most items I had weeded out/in already. But YES there are stores EVERYWHERE that if you have an oops, you can buy if you need. Great vid!!

The first thing we recommended to anyone who travels where you may have hail is vent covers.
Our sons vents that were not covered were destroyed in a hail storm in South Dakota.
We were able to tape it up until they got back home in WI.
Other campers had their vents, ACs, skylights destroyed.

water splitter, poop wagon (gray or black tank portable), generator, are definitely needs for us. We're in a 38 ft class A, and poop-wagon fits in our basement. Hooks right to our mini cooper to take to the dump station. Great for longer, (1 week or more) at SP's or COE's that dont have sewer. Generator - not just for boon docking... We've stayed in FHU RV parks that loose their power, usually during very hot and humid times or storms. Our SWEATING neighbors have looked at us in envy when we are nice and cool, and our residential frige is running just fine. There's just certain things for us, that we won't give up. We are FT for the last 3 years. But to each his own.... And that's why Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors. Love watching you guys, safe and happy trails to you!

I am looking at doing a lot of boondocking and I think a generator will come in handy and also looking at adding solar to charge the batteries and the generator when needing the microwave or airconditioning. Except the backup cameras help while changing lanes moving down the road on when to pull over in front of moving car…not just when backing up, it working when going down the highway is great - backing up and moving over in traffic by the camera is great when you don’t have a significant other persons or partner to help out, or single traveler.
I would like to one day speak to you guys about how you do the travel nursing, how you get licenses in all the states, more friendly states/ hospitals. I've got some of it, like a generator, it came with the rig, but mostly I agree with you. You need a water hose, a couple of lengths of sewer hose, maybe a sewer hose caterpillar and a black tank rinse hose. Other than that, buy stuff as you need it. If you are going to get a generator, get a quiet one. I got a Wen 3800 watt inverter generator for about $600. Please don't get on of those noisy open frame contractor generators. Keep the good stuff coming guys.

So true! We did break down on the generator in year 2 of being part timers, but that was for a portable unit, and it was because we were doing full weeks in dry NP campgrounds. Fast forward now to full time in a small Class A, with an onboard generator, and we almost never use it! I got so used to pour-over or cafetière coffee, outdoor cooking, etc, that I cannot imagine firing up the generator unless we truly need it.

As for the generator not a must, But if you reserve way ahead like us and know you will dry camp, nice to hit the remote start in the morning and fire up the Keurig. Also air conditioning, charging batteries, TV Etc. but again not necessary.

I’m a solo camper and have a backup camera (came with it), but I only use it when I’m straight so I know how far to back up. Backing itself, mirrors and over the shoulder (TT). I also love having the portable tank. Being a newbie, I hate unhooking to go to a dump site. I can do N entire day with 2 showers (if needed) to fill the tanks up 2/3. Every morning I can empty the gray into the bin, hook it onto the hitch, and go dump. 15 minutes tops. It is nice of you like to take longer showers.
Also a medic here. Shower before and (especially during the height of COVID), shower at night.

A hose splitter can not only be used for multiple hoses but also releasing the pressure in your hose and not making a mess when you just have one connected. I have a 4way I have 1 hooked up for freshwater then since I have 2 black flush I hook both up at the same time. Leaving I empty. When I'm done I can then shut off the main and open the empty valve and reverse siphon the water back out of the hose and not spill all over the place. You can also hook up a hose here and run it under your camper if you don't want to get wet. It's nice to have that and not get the inside of your wetbay all wet. It's just a small little expenditure to make a nice convenient way to flush and not get all wet in the process. I also have vent covers it was a hit when I had to buy 4 of them but I use the all the time. We have two maxxair fans and when it's hot out we like to run them even when it's raining and it's nice to know that most of the rain stays outside. When it comes to coolers we have found the backpack ones are nice, you can pack drinks in them and some ice and go exploring for friends in campgrounds but then they breakdown very small and store away. I have 3 teen boys so we have a handful of them and they can just grab a few drinks and a ice pack and be gone for the day. It works out nicely. (don't cheep out or your butt will get soaked when it leaks)

@@HappilyEverHanks Hi!! I'm a 'full' time weekend warrior currently. We just got a 2020 Open Range 376fbh . We are at a resort for now..semi long story but I live in the middle of nowhere in upstate NY and have 3 teen boys. So going to a camping resort is their 'neighborhood' where they actually have friends. We have been seasonal there for 3 year's now and did weekends for years before all around and just kept going back there (btw it's a great place Triple R camping resort in Franklinville NY check it out) .. but back to my story. I'm currently a full remote worker ( I did it before it was cool with covid) but I have always wanted to travel never got around to it. My wife is a full time nurse and NY doesn't allow reciprocity for nurses to go to other states. So the wife and I have not been able to do full time yet..we plan on it fall of 2022. We plan to do all of the upgrades and then I don't own a truck (yeah I know lol) We are also looking to sell our house in NY and buy a house in Tennessee when we do that we will have the winter home base and then leave the camper up here in the summer and traveling the winter months in the south (that's the plan at least). I've done a bunch of upgrades haven't posted anything yet. I also follow Project Trek they have the same rig as us.

A nurse in New York is no joke. We have the same problem with being nurses in Pennsylvania. No reciprocity, so we started doing travel nursing 4 years ago and fell in love with it! What kind of specialty of nursing does your wife work?

Agree with most of your "don't need" items except for vent covers. We live in Colorado and attended a rally in a state park. There was a tremendous hail storm (golf ball size). It destroyed our neighbor's vent and fan. Luckily we were able to replace the damaged parts the next day at near the cost of a vent cover. She also had us install a vent cover. It protects damage to the vent fan and letting water into the rig. The price may seem high but check the warranty on the cover. It may be well worth it. We have a Solitude and have three vent covers. We consider it well worth the investment.

The back up camera is a very useful feature for us! While my wife does help as a second set of eyes, the camera is a third set of eyes! We do a lot of driving through big cities and navigating a fifth wheel through them is already a chore. I really like the added benefit of seeing if I'm clear for a lane change. Especially in heavy, slow moving traffic when it's harder to discern if you can get over safely. You guys are great. Two of the items we did get are the Generator and the Vent Covers (xmas gift from my awesome mother and father in-law). Most the parks we go to in California have no hook ups so we do use our generator on a regular basis. Usually just to charge up our batteries or if it is really hot to cool down the trailer. We also use the vent covers so we can leave our vents open while we drive to circulate the air in the trailer.. We live in a hot climate and typically go to the coast. Without the vents the trailer takes a while to cool off with out running the AC. However with the vents open once we hit the costal air the trailer cools off and is usually comfortable when we get to our destination. Keep up the great content!

Great vid! We have been tin tent camping for close to 20 years and have been full time for one year. The only item that we would have to disagree with is the washer and dryer. Our current rig is the first one we have owned that has a w/d and the convenience is amazing. Saves time, effort and having to deal with other other people's inability to watch their machines. We also do not have to keep the quarters! We are spoiled now, and agree that we would not do without them.
We do agree that weight can be an issue for most, but we haul with a hdt so it is not an issue.

Vent covers are a must...maybe it hasn't happened to you YET, but vents will gradually open on their own while in the airflow from driving. So I would either find a way to 'lock' them to keep the crank handle from turning or just get covers for them. They're affordable protection.
Backup camera is a must. While it's great to have another person, nothing can replace actually seeing behind your trailer, especially when backing toward your house, a tree, picnic table, etc. I also have the side-view cameras. Great investment in my opinion.
The Rhino holding tank tote you pictured (which can be used for either black or grey, though I'd advise not using for black), is actually easy to hook to the ladder. It has a ladder hook and then you just use a ratchet strap.
Washer in the RV? Never. Heard too many horror stories, they use a lot of water and when something goes wrong...all that water goes somewhere, and many times it goes INSIDE the RV and destroys it! Just not worth it.
    Another great video.

My RV came with a generator. I probably have used it all of five or six times. I keep the ice cooler around because it's a family heirloom.
If I had the room, I could easily talk myself into a washer and dryer. My dad put me through college repairing washers and dryers. And selling them on the weekends. My leisurely long-term plan. Is to get a small pickup to tow behind the RV. And pick up a washer and or dryer placed out on the curb somewhere. My dad used to do that all the time. And every one out of three that he picked up didn't even need any work. They just put it out on the curb because they wanted to buy a new one.

So funny I should watch this one. Now I am a truck camper but not all is lost. You answered a big question and that is a roof vent. Honestly I think 🤔 there ugly don't want them on my camper why??? Cause it's right up front over my bed. But you made me breathe with ease, cause I do exactly I was doing. Far as boondocks goes my camper came with a genny love it and need it more for summer with air conditioning. But outside of that my solar takes care of it except in winter when sunny days are short I run it for a few hours 🙃 and we're good. Really cold running it lot more for 1 cold reduces efficiency of batteries. 2nd you don't really realize how much electricity use might be using. Remember I'm a truck driver so I'm in my home for 2 or 3 days tops. But I will say my most expensive rv purchase just happened. And its taken a about a year to get it. Now this is in Canadian funds but it was a battery tower power from ecoFlo delta. It is 1265kw lithium battery with a built in inverter. Now it was regular price 1899$ then Amazon had 100$ off then a 200$ coupon at checkout. I really had to think 🤔 is this something I need and can benefit from. And yes why cause to run any house hold appliances I had to run the genny. Even if it was for 5 mins. So I don't regret it's such a added bounse. But I do have a Even bigger question and thst is water treatment for your fresh water, cause not all water is poured equal right. As far as putting a water purifier under the sink that's not alot of room I got. What have you both encountered or thought of or using that is cost efficient and reliable as well as worth the money spent on it. I so love your channel so love that it's just a fun happy channel about the trails and turbulations of being a RV'er and getting into it and making sure 😀 your doing it so right. Thanks again. 😊

Thank you so much for your awesome comment Bryan!! As far as the water treatment, we have been using a mixture between purified water via a Brita filter and bottle waters. We have hear some great things about the Berkey water system as well!! That is super expensive however, so we would have to budget for that one day if we wanted to invest in on 😃Thank you so much for taking the time to write these comments, keep them coming!!!!!

You guys are great! I agree that none of these items are needs but convenient, just depends on personal RVing style. I live in the Pacific Northwest and I've installed rain covers on every RV I've owned almost immediately. This list is such a good demonstration of “it depends on how you use your RV”.
My trailer came with a vent cover, and I’m definitely glad to have it. Reason? I can still open the vent when there’s several inches of SNOW on the roof.
I also did buy a generator, and while it certainly doesn’t come on every trip it has earned its keep. Reason? When it’s below zero outside, being able to run a space heater, heated mattress pad, and heated blanket in addition to the propane heat while boondocking is pretty great.
I also bought a backup camera system with the side cameras, and use it CONSTANTLY. Reason? I’m alone, so there’s no luxury of a spotter to help. That would make for a LOT of “get out and look” without the cameras.
I travel by myself in winter. You don’t. Different situations = different gear. :)

Generator is something I deem necessary. If you live in Climates that tend to get very warm AND you have pets or you like to stop in places were hookups are not necessarily available, having a generator is nice so you can turn the AC on and keep you and or your pets cool. Having had a Class A, with onboard generator, I missed this convenience when I got back into RV travel with a travel trailer. Having the generator greatly increases your options, especially when you like to do spontaneous travel stops. Some do this now with big solar systems and batteries, but I am not there yet with that expense! Everything else, totally agree, waste-o-money.

We RV'd for almost 20 years before we bought a generator. We're glad to have it, but we only really needed it once, and that wasn't for the RV. The alternator on our ancient suburban died, and running the generator for a couple hours allowed us to top off the battery before heading home.

We did a bunch of research and sifted through what we thought was essential for our first RV. We settled on a few vital things, such as a water regulator, wheel chocks, a first aid kit, and since I'm a computer business owner and my background is in radar and system engineering, I had to rig up some electronic toys, such as battery monitors and some cameras and I'll probably do something with some solar panels but that's for a later time. We also bought a fresh water hose (food grade?) and some Lego levelers.
As for washers and dryers, I can't even believe that's a thing in an RV. LOL That is WAY above my pay grade to own something that outrageous. After all, you can make a pair of underwear last four days (frontwards, backwards, inside out, repeat).....KIDDING....(or just go Commando....the Navy SEAL in me is showing).
We are not doing the ice cooler thing either. Yes, it is appealing but not a necessity. The fridge will just have to do to chill our drinks. With a little pre-planning, the drinks can be pre-staged in the fridge for later consumption. No biggy.
The only other thing that I would consider a necessity is Internet capability wherever I go (remember the computer business owner part?) I service customers online and no Internet means no helping customers, not to mention I just love to do things online because I'm the quintessential "geeky boy" (my wife's term of endearment for me).
Anyway, love you both too and love the channel. Have a most excellent week!

You guys are hilarious 😂 For me a back up camera was a necessity as a new RV driver and owner. However, everyone pushes Furion. All of the preps are furion but that doesn’t mean you have to buy that brand. Do your research. There are many options out there where you can buy a pigtail adapter and use and off brand camera. Mine was a quarter of the price that furion cost plus I got a much bigger monitor. I like to see traffic behind and on the side when driving. Makes me feel much safer but it’s a total preference.

I think a lot of people's "must have" and "would be nice to have" lists are best determined by trial and error. We are awaiting our new travel trailer, but have rented C-Class, B-Class and have family with a trailer.
Based on our experiences and family input, we have a list of must haves.
And... if I watch RUclips videos and a particular item is mentioned on multiple channels... it is probably a good idea to have provided that the person recommending it has a good explanation of why.
