My dad, Mondelll Heninger was an engineer in the Ogden yards for over 30 years, making up trains for other destinations. He worked his way up from fireman (caboose) and retired in 1988 as #1 seniority guy in the yard, but sadly passed away the following year. Every time I hear the train whistle I think of him. Just found this video going through RUclips. I lived in Ogden all my life cool to see the mountains and listen to your travels. The homeless shelter was called saint Ann's at one time. We would pick up day labors on wall Ave in front of saint Ann's years ago. some of the guys were hard workers and we would try to keep them working through the summer. Man some of the story's they would tell us about their travels was very enjoyable some were sad or down right scary. A lot of people thought they were just bum's. they were wrong some of the people I met were well educated and just loved to live the way they did. All I can say if you run into some one like shoestring and your young listen to them you can learn a lot by listening to what they have to say. thanks for your time and talking about Ogden

I miss the Modoc Line. They should have never got rid of it! I remember the SP Gray ghost trains that would go 90-100 mph in the dead of the nite on the Sunset Route.. They were fun to ride hehe. You bring back lots of memories.
I guess since UP has a line from Portland that runs East along the Columbia and Snake Rivers that meets up with the Overland route the Modoc line became redundant. I wish we didn’t have all these mergers that closed so many lines. Tennessee Pass is another casualty
Awesome video shoestring ! I used haul new furniture from NC Ogden Utah pick-up potatoes take them back Ingles in Black Mountain . NC to distribution center . Man it gets cold there .
I have rode a few trains out of Ogden, and salt lake, going both ways into Vegas, Wyoming, and Colorado.. I really like riding out of Vegas at night heading into Utah.. I love looking at the lights getting smaller the further you go.. I wish I could ride again, but I'm to old now lolololol..
Back in the summer of 98 this hobo his name was marvin can't remember his rail name but him and I jumped a train going north to pocatello Idaho and that was my first trip on a train up there and back and my last and in pocatello Idaho I met 7 or 8 F.T.R.A train riders really opened my eyes to a lot of things used to go t Ogden Utah a lot just to get out of salt lake city for a while and stay on the Ogden river of a month or so thay changed a lot of the Ogden railyard thay took the round house out anyways watch ur self out there. Great video. Nice to see the return to the longer documentary-style format. Back to the Alaska and pre-Alaska days. Enjoyed seeing a small piece of the Ogden area. Been to a lot of places, but Ogden is not one of them. Always fascinating to see the places you visit and observe what is happening in the background while listening to your commentary.

It was GN between Vancouver and Seattle ...I hopped in Bellingham...where the train that usually stopped in Ferndale....didn't. I called my dad from the stop at the Canadian border.

Well, he is a good guy compared to his past from my experience. His practice riding the rails can be Deadly. He may perhaps have vison problems being he could Not tell the difference between Rail Road Police security vehicle (SUV) vs. crew transport (8 passenger van). I can occasionally spot rail riders walking certain roads as they dress (dark/black clothes), etc.

Hey shoestring. That blue light on the rail means there are carman working between or under the cars. 100% train won't move or have engines or cars added or removed with that there. In the yard it probably means doing an air test.
I always had Samsung Galaxy phones that took beautiful photos and videos. I got a Motorola that isn't anything near the quality of the Samsung. Same with the LG phone I'm using right now. When I was in elementary school there was a carpet store across the street. We used to get in the dumpster and get the new carpet samples that almost fit in our desks perfectly. That's something I'll never forget. That was an amazing old schoolhouse that burned down along with my hometown when that DEMON called the Camp Fire BLEW through Paradise California November 8'th 2018 and murdered 85 poor souls and more poor animals than we will ever know. The Modoc Line was abandoned southeast of Alturas, CA after the UP/SP merger. The line from Klamath Falls is still active with locals. There is a crossing on the Modoc line with the BNSF Inside Gateway line west of Alturas.

Spent 2 summers in Forsyth. Loading gondolas with 1'x2' steel plates. By hand. My buddy and I. Could load one cutting the iron then throwing it in the car, in a week. Have relatives around Laurel. That Laurel yard is huge since they moved Forsyth operations to Laurel. 👊😎👍🚂🚃

Used to catch the BN train from Forsyth to Aberdeen SD via Hettinger.

Those haz placards are for “Dangerous When Wet” materials like alkali metals such as potassium and sodium, I bet they are filled with mineral oil. In this case UN1402 is calcium carbide.
