I leaned so hard into boho fashion in junior high that someone at church asked my mom if I was dressed up to be in a play 😂. All the other kids were wearing Abercrombie. I truly love how I dressed then but it’s hard for me to imagine incorporating “hippie” blouses and skirts as an adult, sort of like how Hannah was worried about short hair “making a girl of her.”
I agree. I was the punk emo kid in a school full of preppy girls. I remember constantly being berated for how I dressed, I even heard a friend of mine at the time planning to ditch our friendship because I was dressed as cool as the others. But I loved how I dressed at the time, I was my most confident.
i feel like fashion changes so much that eventually it comes to a point where you are in your 30s and 40s and you're like ok i'm out. i wore this when i was 16 and i gracefully and bowing out and then you just find your classic vibe and don't really follow trends anymore. like maybe ill be stuck in my millenial wide leg pants, linens, birkenstocks and t-shirts forever and im ok with it lollll
As a teen of the 90’s It’s so nostalgic to see the trends come around again. Some im loving so are an instant no, I will not be doing the mini bags trend & I absolutely loved them back then 🤷♀️
Exactly this! Just hit 30, and I can’t with trends anymore. I know what suits me and I look amazing. The idea of me following trends and going back to the badly experimental days (fun but looked terrible), no thanks lol I’ve clocked out if that.
@@J111Wright Me too! I'm 42 and for me the 80s/90s trends are just a lot of fun and like an opportunity to relive a fantasy version of that era 😆. But yes, some trends inspired by those days were not cool then and seem silly to call hip or edgy now.
I've had a pair of Italian-made leather ballet flats for a decade. I found them in a little shop in London, very inexpensive, but I could tell they were made with traditional Italian/North African practices of leather-care. They've aged beautifully. They remind me of my grandmother and great aunt's 50's flats - both these women taught me to use shoe-forms. But honestly, the leather work was so perfectly executed that the form of these shoes springs back into shape, naturally, after a few weeks. The patina is stunning. Arguably, they're more beautiful now than when I purchased them. Well-made is always the way. My elders taught me that. I remember them showing me things they had bought on a shoe-string budget and cared for for 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 years... Good materials and care are dying arts.
I was a scholarship student at a Manhattan prep school, and I feel this so much! It comes up in weird ways - like I feel snarky about the return of the nylon Longchamp bags trend, not because I dislike them, but because this was the classic middle schooler bag back in my day and everytime I see one it’s like it sets off my teen angst about not fitting in😅
In my school in Munich, Germany, the preppy style was never a majority trend, but it was what all the rich kids were wearing, so I totally get that feeling of "I could never, those are snob clothes" - Longchamp bags, anything Abercrombie or Ralph Lauren - all on the forever banned list for me 😆
The Longchamp is a perfect example of how I personally ignore trends. I first wore them back in uni almost 15 years ago (a bit late to the party, they had already been on trend when I bought my first one). Then, I wore them for many years despite knowing that they were no longer "cool" and I saw almost no one else wear them. I was honestly surprised to see them return, e. g. on fashion influencers like Emma Hill. Still going to wear them. 😂
I've been thrifting since a child & found the knack over the years of looking luxe for less. The cost of clothing & trends don't determine how fashionable someone is or how good they look. People should be proud of how they present themselves regardless of the price tag.
Show me your ways! How would you define your style? Boho? Preppy? Do you shop at places like goodwill or do you have local thrift stores? Just trying to be like you!
Here’s an idea….butter yellow mesh kitten heels! 😂. My mother used to say “just because it’s in style or expensive doesn’t mean it looks good on you”. Over the years I’ve learned to create my own ideas of “classic”, meaning what works for me and tweak from there.
Who would wear the butter yellow you ask? Definitely me. It's the perfect yellow for a soft summer. It's a cool tone yellow. My favorite way to wear it is with white, but it goes with just about everything in my closet including steely blues. I will definitely try to find a piece or two while it's trending because it is normally a hard color to find. Great video. I always love your takes on fashion.
I am a summer too and have 2 yellow items in my wardrobe. Both are a very desaturated light neutral beige-like yellow. I detest yellow, but love these two. Now I can put a name on this color, thank you!
@@JuSav12 There are probably several shades that we call butter yellow that are different enough that each of us can wear them. Some will be slightly cooler and some slightly warmer.
"The wounding high school years." Nailed it. Now heading into a hefty minimalism, quiet luxury adjacent, with an '80's-'90's vibe. I'm down. And a Full Wardrobe Declutter. Oh, yes. Me, too. Yours is going to be more fun for me, I have a feeling. Always inspiring!
I am in the throws of a sentimental journey. I graduated college in the mid 70’s and leaned heavily into my “stoner” era, wearing a self made batik maxi dress and second hand wooden clogs, every day; to create my own cool and disguise my “poor” roots. This was so much fun! I still wear whatever, but I love to pay attention to trends out of curiosity.
The thing about butter yellow is I think it looks lovely, I'm drawn to it when I see it, and I also know it's Not For Me. It doesn't suit me, for one, but I don't know if it's also a little bit related to it featuring heavily in my wardrobe as a small child in the late 90's - I see butter yellow and love it but also think it should have little ducks and flowers embroidered on it :D
There are certain pastel colors that always look unclean to me, like I can see into the future and imagine the future dinginess that will inevitably develop, and it makes me a little queasy.
I found myself only drawn to and buying butter yellow clothing this spring and summer before I knew it was a trend. I don't know why, but I absolutely love it and think it looks good on me as a true summer. I pair it with white or blue mostly, but just yesterday I came up with the most glorious tonal outfit of all vintage silk, butter yellow pieces and I felt completely fabulous!
I was just having this conversation the other day! The idea of wearing preppy clothing both makes me feel like a "poser" AND harkens back to the exact point in my life in which that was a devastating thing to be called. I think it's beautiful, but it feels not for me.
Mary Jane flats will always be my trend. I love when my feet are either absurdly chunky (platform biker boots) or quirky and delicate (mary janes). Plus with my chronic pain issues, I can't do any height of heel without feeling like my muscles are rotting on the (rusty) bone. At least in flats with an almond toe and some interesting visual flourishes, I can still feel more put-together than I would in a pair of slides or sneakers, even if they do fall apart after one trek across town.
It really is so fascinating how that fashion group think works. I wouldn't think of myself as particularly interested in trends, but I still find myself influenced by them. A couple years ago I remember first seeing people wearing tailored vests as tops by themselves and thinking "what a strange, quirky thing to do" - and here I am, writing these lines in a bright sky blue linen vest I thrifted. Because of the colour it is slightly serving Peter Rabbit and I love that.
Hannah, the MESH FLATS!!! The mesh flats my husband got me for my birthday made me a shoe girl, and I am not looking back. They have literally changed my fashion persona. They bring out something fierce in me. They are black and holding up surprisingly well! They still look new after a few months of occassional wear. I will be wearing these long after the trend passes, and I am not sorry.
I highlyyy recommend the podcast Articles of Interest - they did a whole season on American Ivy (aka "preppy"), which weaves so many fascinating threads, including how many of the "trendless classic" pieces we know and love today have their roots in Ivy style, and how these traditionally American styles were taken up in Japan just as they were heading "out" in the U.S. and then made their way back. Like you, the host of the show went to prep school but was more alternative/fashion-minded and had ambivalent feelings about the style before diving into the season. Anyway, it's worth a listen! x
I used to dress my baby/toddler in white all the time. That was the "neutral" of her wardrobe. People commented all the time that they couldn't believe she was in white. I found it so much easier to clean, because if anything happened, I bleached it and moved on.
I love when you do these videos because they make me think a lot about the ways I see trend cycles that exist in the vacuum of fashion journalism vs the way I see them exist in the world and I think that because journalists and designers need new things to write about and sell more frequently than we need new clothes, things get needlessly granular. Like I'm glad that slimmer sneakers are in fashion because I prefer then and they will be easier to buy but I think overall it means simply that sneakers are still in and realistically people will wear whatever weight of sneaker they prefer and it will look fashion. I thought about you while I was in Milan this spring because I saw SO many blazers everywhere and I remember several of this fashion trend videos where you have talked about the aesthetic merits of boxy vs fitted blazers and while I can't remember which style of blazer the magazines said were in this spring, the reality is that I didn't really see one cut dominate over the other. The fashionality to me was less about what fit looks good, which (I think is dependent on individual bodies and personal preference) and more about the drama and structure of the collar/lapel and shoulders. distilling a trend into its most basic parts like this is helpful for me because I can find ways to participate in trends without purchasing new things or adopting the parts of the trend that don't do it for me. It reminds me of the way you duped the vibes of eyeshadow palettes with stuff you already had, but with clothes.
Do you think overshopping as an adult is a compensation for not feeling "good enough" in school? . I find this often times this causes me to "over buy" now because I couldn't "keep up" then in high school
I fell down the Kibbie rabbit hole a few years ago and discovered I’m a “soft classic,” which really helped me understand why I look my best in simple, classic clothes. I passed on the dad sneaker trend because it would have looked clownish on me. I have had a black ballet flat in my wardrobe for decades now. I definitely invest in them because softer leather can wear out more quickly if it’s not well made. I purchased an Anine Bing houndstooth blazer a few years ago and wear it constantly. I wear it 5x as much as my Everlane blazer that I also love.
I have mixed feelings about Kibbie (I think I’m a gamine with something else I forget?) but to me it was a really helpful explanation for how I can give TOTALLY different vibes when wearing the same outfit as someone who is, say, a “classic.” Button up shirts, defined shoulders etc are in some ways always “masculine” but on me they pull feminine. Kibbe is of like the undertone conversation in makeup!
Amen! And if a trend does happen to suit me, and i like it, if i keep wearing it after the trend has passed, then my natural style is out of date. People DO judge you for that, which is annoying.
@@labradorite8256 I've been really into showing off my funky socks for years and all of a sudden it's trendy for youth to show off their socks, so now I'm insecure because I don't want to be accused of "trying to pose as younger than I am" 😅😂😭 y'all, fashion is cyclical!
Couple things. So excited for the declutter series. Woot! I'm so curious to know how your opinion of white changes as your little guy gets older and as we enter into fall. I'm inspired by your recommendation of the tide pen. I will try this. But as a young toddler mom, I'm always begrudgingly shying away from my whites and light greys. In one "Up! Up! Up!" it's all over.
I’ve always worn white as a mom and an educator. Wear the tennis shoes you love. A raffia bag is like a unicorn I just can’t find the one I want. I’ve been a minimalist dresser for many years-I’m 65 it’s not trend. I’ve always preferred kitten heels. An undone preppy look similar to Emmanuel Alt or Valerie Laberichel is a style I aspire to. So wear what you want and don’t over think it.
Re: butter yellow!! I LOVE IT. In the right shade paired to your skin tone (the color just has to look buttery relative to what’s around it), it is the perfect non-color color, like a de-saturated khaki-beige or a bruised eggplant purple-brown. For my closet, that non-color quality makes it perfect to dress down a look that might feel too dramatic from high color saturation or high contrast, or I can play with subtle shade variation without busying my look with too many distinct colors. I pair it with natural muted browns, stark or faded blacks and whites, navy/blues, some purples, bright saturated green or orange. It’s a party 😂
I have a pair of red, patent leather ballet flats that I've had for about 10 years. I keep them in their original box when they're not on my feet. I get compliments on them every time I wear them--usually when I'm going out in the fall or early spring. Definitely a process to keep them clean and nice. They're incredibly comfortable and still keep their color and shine.
Summer 2024 inspiration: Kristen Scott Thomas in "The English Patient." Beautiful white dresses, raffia bags, espadrilles, linen shirts and khaki pants.
I never thought I’d be able to wear yellow but I got bored wearing the same boring scrubs at work, I found a greenie cool yellow set and just decided to rock it anyways. I’m olive and high contrast with dark hair and hazel eyes. Man I thought I was going to be villainized and people would be making ugh face but everyone loved it. You never know until you try.
I saw a really great tiktok (wish I could find it!) a girl talking about how the best fashion is not about fashion. How the best dressers aren't fashion people even. Because when fashion its just about fashion, it collapses inward. Clothing should serve us while we do our work in the world (as HLP usually says), and the best dressers are those that dress in a reflective, creative, life-considering way. Reflecting life, interests, hobbies, passions, jobs, etc.
The kitten heel is an interesting thought process for me. I've been trying to find a pair of comfortable flats that still come off as dressy but not work or "old". And what I've come to realize is that it is the impracticality of a shoe that makes us feel like it's dressy. Hence the kitten heel.
Jake Henry you are killing me too. I have enough to work on in therapy. I don't need the ghost of Corrie's past fashion scars right now. LOl...ish. I think I'll stick with hunting for my chunky Chelsea boots I've spend over a year realizing I really like. PS. my favorite teen tee was butter yellow on the top 1/3, navy blue on the bottom 2/3 and with 3 olive green stripes connection them. I'd forgotten that thing until the butter yellow come up
Kitten heels, so true! The drawbacks of stilettos, without the advantages. I'm waiting for Cuban heels to make a comeback. You know, mid height heels with curves, and vamps with some personality...a T strap, or cutwork, or menswear inspiration. Yes, to the pleasure of finding clothing styles that feel distinctive enough to give you a lift, but low-key enough to not look like you're cosplaying as a hedge fund princess, but anxious that you're misleading the people you meet.
I can picture you, Hannah, sitting first row at a fashion show consisting of reinterpreted 2000s prep and reinterpreted 2000s boho, surrounded by unimpressed fashion people, while you alone drop a single tear from your eye
Rajiv Surendra (the actor who played Kevin G in Mean Girls) has the most beautiful channel about slow, artistic living. He has a great video on keeping white clothes white by using an “older” laundry technique - bluing! I think you’d love his channel, Hannah!
Butter yellow makes me feel anxious. It’s like the person in school that never got picked for sports teams. You want to love it but you just can’t … nope… and then you feel bad for it … and start to worry if it’ll be okay… and then you wonder how it’s gonna make it through life … and then you start to feel like you SHOULD wear butter yellow in sympathy, just to be kind...
Same, but scrolling through the comments I see a few that are happy about it, so I don't think it'll be totally abandoned and that has to be good enough to move on. A sort of rational solution to an irrationally expressed emotion.
I’m so happy slim sneakers are in! My favorite sneakers that I wore through college were super low profile “soccer” shoes that were sooo comfortable. Over the years, I’ve become rather conscious of foot health, and I’m not longer willing to smash my foot into a stiff shoe that’s too narrow for my wide foot. Now, I might be able to stay closer with the fashion with my barefoot style shoes!
As someone who wound up accidentally wearing and getting a lot of white clothing, it really doesn’t have to be that difficult to care for. Even my gi for jiu-jitsu, which has multi-colored patches on it but is otherwise bright white and I try to keep it that way, which also gets sweat and blood and god knows what else all over it, isn’t that tough to care for. Especially if you’re already in the habit of being consistently conscientious when caring for your clothing. It isn’t that big a deal.
Funny enough, I imagine that having a lot of white clothing helps you keep it clean. It's easier to wash whites together if you actually have enough to make up a load.
@@user-rz9rq7pp2b the trick starting out was that my bedsheets and towels are bright white. Even if I don’t have enough clothing to make a full load, it’s never a bad idea to have clean sheets and towels.
I feel you with the preppy style. I was a lower- middle class kid zoned into an wealthy school. The wealthy kids in their Ralph Lauren and Ocean Pacific made my life hell. I loathe the style to this day. Even objectively, it feels bland and repetitive, as if the goal is to demonstrate you can get it right, rather than express any kind of individuality. Please forgive me, any non-bully preps out there. My scars are showing.
That notion of not wanting to go back to a previous version of yourself through clothing is so real. Anything I would have worn pre covid I now get a visceral reaction to if I try to put it back on
I sometimes "cosplay" as previous iterations of my style when I feel nostalgic. But everything has its time and my way of clothing now shows my evolution to this point. (This sounds way more dramatic than intended 😊)
Being a high school kid in the 80s, preppy was SO hugely popular but it also represented kids to aspired to be yuppies when they grew up. I just hated it, it seemed like it was just so classist. Yet I do like some classic fashion. I just…here I am at 53 years old still thinking, “ew, yuppies.” Boho and dark boho makes me so happy
Ah, butter yellow! As a summer-toned gal with a soft blended complexion, I love butter yellow. Normally, it is so hard to find but it is plenteous right now, which is a dream to me. I’ve been able to acquire a few pieces in “my yellow” this spring and summer. Yay. Also, I look better in a slim shoe than a chunky one, so I look forward to seeing slim sneaker options in the stores:) Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the current trends.
I have some lace-up flats with mesh panels in silver and I love them! They are several years old and I think they still look good, I wear them for parties etc, not every day.
It would be very intriguing to hear your take on the intersection of things like 'kibbe body types'/'seasonal color analysis' with personal style and personal history. How to navigate the contradictions. It feels like this video is just the beginning of a conversation
My parents made me wear preppy clothes as a kid (not the expensive stuff, just style-wise), and I've actually decided I like it as an adult. The delicateness of prep, the kitten heels, and the small sneaker trend appeal to me because honestly I'm just so small- boho and chunky sneakers and whatnot make me look like I'm lugging around goods to sell in the Mad Max wasteland.
I ended up buying a pair of butter yellow square-toe flats this summer! I waffled on the color online, but when I saw them in person at the store I just fell in love. They are way more cream than yellow, and I basically wear them in that way. I have been moderately careful with them, but they are also holding up incredibly well. My style is pretty gorp or minimalist otherwise. In my mind, I have plenty of hard-wearing shoes and boots to run around in and get messy, it feels really lovely to have something slightly femme and precious to wear out to drinks or the like!
I think harling ross (current substacker, former man repeller editor) coined butter yellow/stick of butter dressing a few years ago. that (traditional media) fashion editors have embraced the term every summer since might speak to its longevity as a trend.
I don't have any mesh ballet flats (I opted for a vintage mesh pair of pumps that will still fare well after that very specific version of the mesh trend falls out of favor). But I stumbled upon this really great pink leather pair last summer that is made of the softest comfiest leather. I got them for like 20 bucks at a resale shop and I'm in love. The brand is Bassike. I had never heard of them but I would recommend. I got sole protectors on them and they're now my go to shoe in a lot of instances. Shocking for me because I'm usually not a pink kind of gal. The shape is structured enough to look chic(it helps that it's not a rounded toe imo), while the super soft flexible leather gives them the comfort and comes across very casual and non fussy. I've walked miles and miles in them and they're holding up beautifully.
Ooooh I do the same as you, wash all my white clothing together so I buy more white than I used to now as I know it’ll totally get washed regularly instead of sitting in a small pile waiting for its turn. You are such a cool person I feel whatever you wore it’d be on point
Dude I can so relate! The flashback I just got of my 7th grade self in a new city -the only year I attended Catholic school- and sooooo out of my comfort zone (not that I ever had a comfort zone!) and the girls sitting next to me in English class asking me “is that a Forenza sweater?” knowing fully well it wasn’t, it was probably from some shop in the tiny North Louisiana town we lived before that. (Like, what even is a Forenza sweater and hopefully my parents will get me one for Christmas or something?) Oh and the Swatch watches.
Love your fashion videos ❤ you're the one who made me aware that united nude existed..this summer I was on vacation in Vienna and bought (on saleeee🎉🎉🎉) my first pair. My God that is an awesome brand. You could wear the simplest outfit, but with one of those designs.. you basically change the whole mood of it and elevate it! Thanks ❤
I HATE butter yellow; I look best in richer, more jewel-adjacent tones, and I just prefer a stronger yellow on principle. But, I do have a butter yellow sleeveless collared shirt, and it doesn’t quite fit right over my bust, but I never get rid of it because the butter yellow collar pairs so well with some sweaters I have, in various colors, and does more for me than a white. I almost did get rid of it a while ago, but watching your videos and some others (KathleenIllustrated, that one guy with the amazing gray hair), and just getting older and more fed up with conforming to expectations impressed upon me by my mother, has really encouraged me to branch out and just try new things. Crazy things, even. My emerald green sweater with the butter yellow collar? Holy moly it’s fashion. Beautiful mustard jacket with a forest green hoodie? I am master of my fate and captain of my soul. I would never, ever wear JUST butter yellow, but I would be more inclined to wear just butter yellow than I would just white. Something about it just does more for me and my color palette than white does, which I find very stark and unappealing, except in a few limited textures.
I pretty much just wear what i like and ever since high school my friends made comments in stores about what a “me” item is on that rack. Yeah, everyone can tell what a me thing is right away. I’d say its a comfy kind of sporty classic.
In defense of butter yellow lol I have one butter yellow article of clothing - a crop racer back tank from Kotn. I bought it last summer and it’s one of my favourite things to wear - as someone with a very cool undertone, it’s the only shade of yellow I can pull off. I’ve had it for a year and it washes great. I’m sure the wash factor really has more to do with the constitution of the garment over the shade. I wash it with my other coloured items and it still looks brand new. As with any colour trends it seems sort of arbitrary, like any given shade of any given colour is only going to look good on people with whom it matches their style and undertones/hair colour, etc. there’s always going to be a much larger chunk of the population for whom it just doesn’t work… idk. But I’m here for this one haha (again as someone who really can only wear this specific shade of yellow and looks positively ill or ruddied by any other shade) :P it’s not that hard to wash is all I’m saying basically.
I look great in butter yellow, BUT as with all color trends, I just feel like you have to take it or leave based on whether it's a good color for you/you feel good in that color.
White is my favorite and can always be bleached. My all-time favorite winter jacket is winter white. In fact, other moms always comment on how nice my teenage son keeps all his white clothes (as if!). It's just so much easier to maintain than most other colors, IMO. Oh, yes! Kitten heels. Please make this true. I adore a pair of kitten heels. They make me feel pretty and feminine without killing my back.
Your comments on raffia kind of remind me of my thoughts on linen. Relaxed, but also with an effortlessly luxe and interestingly textured feeling. RE: flats, I love my tieks leather flats (though I wish they came in half sizes) but I *hate* Mary Jane styles of shoe because they remind me of middle and high school when I felt hopelessly uncool in my school uniform Also RE: kitten heels, I (a hobbyist pole dancer) just bought two pairs of 4” stilettos to supplement (and maybe eventually replace) my kitten heel pumps in my office wardrobe so I’m in the same camp as you there 😆
It's funny because I wear way more white now as a mother than I did before. It's been the best neutral for spring and summer so far! And I have a rambunctious toddler and it's honestly been fine.
Hi Hanna, thanks for your comment on Preppy fashion! I always felt uncomfortable in it, but had to wear it for a photoshoot (my only one in my life) and I just felt so akward that I had to laugh the whole time, I felt like a clown, I also think it looked horrible. But the photographer had other plans for me😂 maybe that's why it was my only photoshoot as a model😋
I am with you on the statement belt, the butter yellow, the mesh shoes full blown boho and just trends. I don't see how i can be my unique, authentic self looking like every one else. 😅
Boho and some of the others is great for trends because they are typically natural materials. And when they leave the picture, they'll go into second-hand. Win win
Yeah as someone with pale ‘winter’ colouring butter yellow would be the colour I’d wear if I plan on faking sick. Otherwise it’s a no for me, would be lovely for someone who already wears a lot of pastels then the washing thing would be less of an issue.
The mesh flats have actually been starting to trend in spring/summer 2023! Things like these are being adopted by the crowds slowly. First the weirder fashionistas, then the median fashionistas, then the mainstream fashionable person on the street. They definitely have at least one more summer of being hip in them ;) If you love em, get em. They're actually pretty practical and when they fit in your style, it won't matter if they're past their peak trendiness. Also: butter yellow is my best friend's best color, she has everything in this shade. Looks terrible on me too, though ;)
It so depends on what the mesh flats are made out of. I would not recommend leather, though maybe I just had a bad experience. Aerosoles were my go-to ballet flats for a while and the laser-cut "mesh" ones looked beat up so much more quickly. For true ballet flats, I find washable ones like Rothy's really increase the lifespan.
I've been watching a few of your fashion videos (because I'm obsessed with fashion lol) and I like your angle on it but I didn't know you were this funny 😅 I'm subscribing 😅

Soooooooo TRUE!!
It's definitely a colour that requires a warm skin glow, it looks amazing on skin tones ranging from a golden tan to dark brown imo
As (I think) a soft spring, I also love a butter yellow!
@@JuSav12 There are probably several shades that we call butter yellow that are different enough that each of us can wear them. Some will be slightly cooler and some slightly warmer.
Love this for you! I’m a winter and can’t imagine liking it on me at all x
I can't stop this from happening in my head: 🎶new fa-shion 🎶hot takes 🎶new fa-shion 🎶hot-takes🎶
You ruined me 😂🎶
"The wounding high school years." Nailed it.
Same! I remember having several flowery butter yellow pieces when I was about 6-7 years old.
There are certain pastel colors that always look unclean to me, like I can see into the future and imagine the future dinginess that will inevitably develop, and it makes me a little queasy.
Couldn't agree more that it reminds me of old baby clothes. That's so specific and so funny 😂
I'm definitely here for the Full Wardrobe Declutter!
I’m with you! I have long feet and chunky shoes or Mary Jane’s (not ballets!) make my feet look cuter and smaller weirdly enough.
The look on your face when you said ‘kitten heels’ is exactly how I’ve felt about them my entire life!
Peter Rabbit is VERY big in our household atm so you're double on trend as far as I'm concerned :)
I LOVE the new hair! Definitely gives the “aesthetic minimalism” vibes she’s dabbling in!
Unrelated, but the way your lip colour matches the bag and boxes in the background is incredibly satisfying
And her black top with the black undertones of every piece in the background. Excellent.
I found it so much easier to clean, because if anything happened, I bleached it and moved on.
the way your lipstick matches the bag PERFECTLY is killing me
I love when you do these videos because they make me think a lot about the ways I see trend cycles that exist in the vacuum of fashion journalism vs the way I see them exist in the world and I think that because journalists and designers need new things to write about and sell more frequently than we need new clothes, things get needlessly granular.
Do you think overshopping as an adult is a compensation for not feeling "good enough" in school? . I find this often times this causes me to "over buy" now because I couldn't "keep up" then in high school
um...yes
Definitely same here. I still feel the need to soothe that poor "not cool enough" high school child in me.
@n.sch.8455 it's been 25 years since I graduated...was hoping to out grow it....nope. 🤣
I think you just explained me!
@susanalexander7990 I don't think I realized it until HLP said it out loud. 💓 Retail therapy has taken on a whole new means. Punny right? 🤣
Butter yellow looks beautiful on deliciously dark brown to copper skin tones, in particular :)
I was thinking the same thing! It makes such a lovely contrast
I absolutely hate trends. It has taken me long enough to figure out my own personal style, nevermind mixing in seasonal trends 😅😅
Amen! And if a trend does happen to suit me, and i like it, if i keep wearing it after the trend has passed, then my natural style is out of date. People DO judge you for that, which is annoying.
@@labradorite8256 I've been really into showing off my funky socks for years and all of a sudden it's trendy for youth to show off their socks, so now I'm insecure because I don't want to be accused of "trying to pose as younger than I am" 😅😂😭
y'all, fashion is cyclical!
I have a pair of pale creamy yellow brogues - I've had them for a few years and I'm obsessed with them.
Now those sound nice!
Now that I think about it, I think I posted about my red shoes on your last video mentioning ballet flats! ☠️
The journey into your brain concerning fashion trends is so much fun to listen to! ❤ You are adorable!
Summer 2024 inspiration: Kristen Scott Thomas in "The English Patient." Beautiful white dresses, raffia bags, espadrilles, linen shirts and khaki pants.
Yesssss. She was stunning and effortless and old money but also practical? Good inspiration.
Yes totally!!! It doesn't hurt that Kristen Scott Thomas exudes that old money vibe, either.
Living for all the fashion content!
Love the way you talk about wearing white clothes! Freedom!
The title alone enticed me sooo much 🔮
That yellow is great if you are a soft summer!
I seriously have been loving your short hair SO much 👏
Same!
thank you!! I love it too!! I already want to trim it a tiny bit shorter omg
13:00 90s glamorous minimalism: I picture Sade in the early 90s and I love it!
Rajiv Surendra (the actor who played Kevin G in Mean Girls) has the most beautiful channel about slow, artistic living. He has a great video on keeping white clothes white by using an “older” laundry technique - bluing! I think you’d love his channel, Hannah!
I think she referenced that exact video in an older take on white clothes 😀
The way you perked up and were almost quietly ecstatic when you talked about the restrained minimal look with substance, 80s 90s vintage look... :o
Same, my favorite video content right how is HLP’s fashion anything
I feel you with the preppy style. I was a lower- middle class kid zoned into an wealthy school. The wealthy kids in their Ralph Lauren and Ocean Pacific made my life hell. I loathe the style to this day. Even objectively, it feels bland and repetitive, as if the goal is to demonstrate you can get it right, rather than express any kind of individuality. Please forgive me, any non-bully preps out there. My scars are showing.
I love butter yellow! Reformation has mastered it with their color "parmesan", which they use in so many beautiful things.
I don't have a single thing from that time period. We evolve. Or conversely become more ourselves.
I love the idea of quiet luxury! Thank you for articulating a fashion style I want to achieve!
Trends are trends. Coolness is something very different
Yay.
Also, I look better in a slim shoe than a chunky one, so I look forward to seeing slim sneaker options in the stores:)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the current trends.
Just want to say I appreciate your intentionality within your choice of images. Bravo 🎉
What a nice treat on a Friday ❤
I too like richer or brighter colors. I can’t decide if it would harder to find a butter yellow or white item I feel good in 😂.
So very very keen for the wardrobe declutter videos
A lot of what you're saying reminds me of a book I read years ago called "Love, Loss, and What I Wore". I recommend it! xo
RE: flats, I love my tieks leather flats (though I wish they came in half sizes) but I *hate* Mary Jane styles of shoe because they remind me of middle and high school when I felt hopelessly uncool in my school uniform
Also RE: kitten heels, I (a hobbyist pole dancer) just bought two pairs of 4” stilettos to supplement (and maybe eventually replace) my kitten heel pumps in my office wardrobe so I’m in the same camp as you there 😆
I love flats for travel, they dress up nicely but are easier to pack and walk on unfamiliar streets in than a heel.
The Writing. And how you're reading it to us. Jake Henry made my day for sure.
I'm not over that the $12 champion sweatshirts from when I was a young teen that you got at Kmart are now $70+.
Win win
I JUST bought a butter yellow sun dress yesterday...yay I'm on trend.
As someone who is taller, I love kitten heels! I don't like 3" heels because I feel like I tower over everyone so I usually look for low heeled shoes.
I feel like I’m always gunna break my ankles when I wear kitten heals 😅
Yeah as someone with pale ‘winter’ colouring butter yellow would be the colour I’d wear if I plan on faking sick. Otherwise it’s a no for me, would be lovely for someone who already wears a lot of pastels then the washing thing would be less of an issue.
Butter yellow/primrose yellow looks great on me- my best colour 🎉🎉🎉
And… love the yellow box in the background!! 😊
OMG, yes for hefty minimalism! I love that it's old school glamour without trying too hard. 😍
I've been watching a few of your fashion videos (because I'm obsessed with fashion lol) and I like your angle on it but I didn't know you were this funny 😅
I'm subscribing 😅
I love straw/raffia accessories
Love this video!
Completely agree with your take on butter yellow.
What lippie are you wearing?
Is it Merit?
yes, it's Merit Tiger!
Ooooh the tease of a wardrobe declutter series. 👀😍
You are correct as usual Hannah! I happened to have one butter yellow t-shirt and it did in fact get dingy after 1 wash
