    As comprehensive and as thorough as ever, I've been watching your DJI videos since the OA 3 was released and I've learned a lot from you, this is the clearest explanation of how ND Filters work in general, not just on an action camera. Kudos for the free LUTs and overview of how to apply them in the editing process - It's not often people give away usable stuff these days for free, Cheers!
    I tried the Hohem, but found the Falcon Plus fits the camera better, its smaller and you can add a quick release mount to it so you can click in on and off much easier, but just using any small gimbal will elevate the videos we can make to the next level. No, you don't really need a gimbal, but as you've shown, it can extend the range of what these little cameras can capture and get some very creative clips. PS it's always charming that you include your family in these tutorials and to see how your little family has grown over the years. 🙏

      If you could only pick one for the Action 5 Pro, do you think polarizing or the standard non-polarizing filters? Which would be more beneficial?
      I guess we're talking about glare/reflections so logically it would make sense to get the polarized. But I'm no film enthusiasts, what do you think? Maybe flares are cool.

    • @GreatDayForAHike

      The Pocket 3 will produce higher-quality video overall due to a large sensor and some other different specs. However, the Pocket 3 is not designed for action situations so if you are doing things that need an action camera then the Action 5 Pro is a better choice.

    Great video! If I don't have a gimbal and I want to do vlogs in 30 fps, I should use 1/120 shutter speed? works fine with rocksteady? or I need to stick to a bigger shutter speed(1/200+). What happens if I use rocksteady with 1/60? Also, if I will buy a gimbal, I should use rocksteady? or turn it off?

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  2 месяца назад +1

      If you’re not using a gimbal but want to film in 30fps you could just keep shutter set to Auto. If you want to use ND filters and a manual shutter speed without a gimbal I’d recommend a shutter speed of 1/240 for best results. You’ll still get more motion blur than with an Auto shutter speed and this will work fine with Rocksteady. If you are using a shutter speed of 1/60 with Rocksteady on you’ll need a gimbal, otherwise there will be jitter or ghosting in your footage. You can keep Rocksteady turned on when using the gimbal. The gimbal provides enough stabilization to prevent jitter and ghosting with Rocksteady on.

    I can see the appeal to this for its versatility, however if you don't need the "action" part of the camera, for the same price as all these items added up you can get a pocket 3, which will give you even better quality. But I do like this combination.

    Help me! I wanna ask one question. I'm traveler and always record my trips by Gopro, i always would like to choose 4k60fps because the smooth. But when i stop and rest and make another clips about foods, restaurant, hotel,... at 4k24fps. So what happend when i put 4k60fps + 4k24fps, and export to 4k60fps? is it good? Thank you, my English is not good enough, sorry but hope you can understand.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  2 месяца назад +2

      Great question. So in this case you could export your finished video as 4K24fps but not as 4K60fps. The reason for this is 60fps has extra frames and can be exported as 24fps because of this but 24fps cannot be exported as 60fps because there would be missing frames and the video would be choppy. So you can still capture 4K60 and 4K24 footage but you’d just want to make sure your final timeline is 4K24 and that you export as 4K24.

    • @phuotchillchill
      @phuotchillchill 2 месяца назад +1

      @@GreatDayForAHike But im always like use "Slow Motion or X-speed" my videos (thats why i record my video motovlog at 60fps beside smooth), so when the last final exported is 4K24, will that affect some 4k60fps'clips in my timeline?

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  2 месяца назад +2

      @phuotchillchill You can either drop 4K60fps footage direct onto a 4K24 timeline and it will play at normal speed or you can slow the 4K60 footage down and have it play as slow as 40% of the original speed smoothly without any skipped frames on a 4K24 timeline. Thank you!

    It's also interesting that you left GoPro (I've not been around for a while)! I couldn't see this day!
    Only one question. With BF at hand, Action 4 is seeing/going to see some of its best price ranges in history. I'm still a GoPro user but think of Osmo very seriously. Will I miss big if I go for Action 4 and save some 40-50% of the price of 5 or merits are so high that I should consider Action 5 Pro? (Despite knowing its prices will stay high at least for a year and a half or more the new battery means more on accessories).

      I explain in this video that a gimbal is needed anytime the shutter speed is set to about 1/200 or below because jitter and ghosting will occur without it due to Rocksteady (a form of electronic image stabilization) needing crisp, sharp frames to work properly. Any shutter speed below about 1/200 does not provide the needed crisp, sharp frames.

    I really want to get the Action 5 Pro, and in most cases, the camera brings the best-looking footage. However, I wasn’t entirely impressed with the Action 5 Pro's clarity and sharpness in expansive scenes like mountains and snow, as the footage often has an unrealistic blueish tone and struggles with rougher bright textures, especially over larger ranges. Maybe the biggest cause of it is the HDR look. I mainly wanted to ask if there’s potential for the Action 5 Pro to achieve results comparable to other cameras by adjusting sharpness and color grading to enhance clarity and improve texture highlights in expansive scenes like mountains and snow. If you live in a snow-covered area, it would be awesome if you'd make a dedicated video to show how to color-grade the footage? Please share your insight and experience about this camera Action 5.

      If I have some snow this winter I’ll definitely film some videos in the snow. I suspect making sure the footage isn’t overexposed where the snow is present in the frame will be one key to get better clarity in the snow. Using the proper white balance will also matter. I do find in general that the GoPro often has better clarity with daytime filming than the Osmo Action cameras.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  2 месяца назад +13

      The Action 5 Pro is a great camera and I say that as one who bought the camera with my own money and am not sponsored by DJI.
      The gimbal is for capturing footage with the 180 degree shutter angle as I explain in this video. The 180 degree shutter angle equals a shutter speed of 1/50 at 24fps and 1/60 at 30fps.
      Rocksteady is a form of electronic image stabilization (EIS) and EIS requires sharp enough frames to properly stabilize footage. Anytime the shutter speed is below about 1/200 there will be some ghosting and jitter in the footage if RockSteady is turned on because the camera cannot match the motion blur in the footage properly with each frame.
      This is a simple limitation of EIS and affects every camera that uses EIS, including GoPro, DJI, Insta360 and any other cameras with EIS. This isn’t an OA5 issue. This is a simple limitation of EIS and how it works.
      The gimbal addressees the limitations of EIS by preventing the micro shakes of the camera that will cause the ghosting and jitter.
      If you don’t want to film with your OA5 using the 180 degree shutter angle then carry on with a shutter speed set to default and you’ll be fine except in low lighting where the shutter speed will slow down too much and cause ghosting and jitter unless your ISO Max is set extremely high. Then in that case you’ll have a fast enough shutter speed but your video will look mushy due to the noise removal algorithm inside the OA5 working on overdrive at high ISOs.
      This gimbal is a great, low-cost tool to get the most out of this camera with the 180 degree shutter angle and in low lighting.
