- Do you think a skew is the devil’s can opener? Perhaps Mike Peace will dispel some of your fears as he demonstrates how to use the skew to the MOntgomery County Woodturners in an Interactive Remote Demonstration on 5/7/2020.

Mike, Thank You!
I wish I had half the woodshop that you have! I watch your demonstrations and get the gift that you give. Thank You for all that you do!
Hi Mike. I’ve been turning for about a year now and LOVE your videos.
I’m getting better with the Skew, but am still searching for my favorite. You mention here that the Jet 3/4” is your favorite, but I’m having trouble finding it. Where can I find one?
Any quality 3/4 skew will do. I bought that Jet skew 15 years ago. Never saw jet turning tools anywhere else. It was manufactured by some British tool company.
Thanks Mike. I really liked that rounded shaft on the edges. Any suggestions on who makes a quality skew with those? I know Sorby doesn’t (as mentioned).
Great deep dive into the skew Mike, have a happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😎😎😎😎😎😎
👍✌️
Thanks for sharing Mike
Take care my friend
Cheers
Harold
You too, Harold.
Thanks, Mike, and Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you and yours as well, Lewis.
Merry Christmas my friend
And you as well, Ken.
Mike, it’s the devils can opener! LOL
Until you use up a 2×4 practicing your cuts.
Can you explain the type of skew you’re using? It’s modified as it’s not a typical straightedge skew
The toe, about 20-25%, is straight for pealing cuts. The rest being curved creates a larger sweet spot for planing. Toe to heel is still skewed about 70 degrees
@@MikePeaceWoodturning I don’t know who came up with it or who, popularized it, but it sure has helped me in learning how to use the skew. It makes it a lot more predictable with fewer catches. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to try to learn to use a skew.
Happy Christmas Mike. I’m new to wood turning and all your content has been a great help. Keep up the good work. Thanks from Scotland.
Thanks, Colin. I visited your lovely country in 2019.
Novice woodturner-invested in the cbn from Woodturners Wonder-was cautioned about not sharpening non-HSS tools on these wheels. I acquired several tools(garage sale finds) that are not marked as to steel type. Any easy way to tell if they're HSS or not?
Take a known hss tool and observe the tiny sparks. Then observe from a carbon tool steel tool. The carbon tools will generate sparks like sparkler fireworks. Some sharpening with can should not be a problem especially if using the wax slick stick from Woodturners Wonders.
Mike this has got to be the BEST teaching video I have ever seen!!! I am an experienced turner and enjoyed each of your teaching points. It will make me a much better mentor and improve my habits. I will recommend this video at my next club meeting!
Thanks so much, Ken. I appreciate your feedback.
Thanks Mike for putting up this video, it has a lot of good info. I’m a member of MCW, but I missed the IRD when you did it for the club. I’m still not proficient with the skew, even after watching your videos and several other RUclipsrs. But I’m getting over my fear of it and getting better at using it, but have to Re bear to use it instead of the tools I’ve gotten use to replacing it with (maybe not as effective or replacement, but has been enabling me to avoid using the skew in the past 🙄). Thanks again for the videos. I hope you and yours have a very Merry Christmas and a great New Year. Cheers, Tom
Thank, Tom. And Merry Christmas.
