In this video, Allan Batty takes you through the make up of the skew chisel and the six basic cuts everyone should know. He shows the proper methods of using the skew, along with "tricks of the trade", so that you can produce superb results without the "dig-ins" that are so common with the skew.
Allan continues from there to instruct on the proper use of the beading and parting tools along with spindle and roughing gouges. The videography is top notch, showing every detail of the cut as it is made.
The question and answer format of tape is easy and enjoyable to watch while addressing the problems associated with the tools demonstrated in the video. Allan's 30 years as a professional woodturner and "perfectionist" approach to all he does has resulted in one of the finest quality, most informative videos available today.

I'm so impressed by a true craftsman. You know a guy knows his craft when he makes it look like anyone can do it with little effort. It's not until you make your very first cuts with a skew and destroy everything, that you realize this guy is a master.

There's so much hype about using skew chisels, when I started I was convinced it would be hard....However, if you can use your brain to work out how to present a skew to a workpiece with the bevel rubbing and the point out of harm's way, then you can cut with a skew chisel. There's no magic involved. :)

I have watched this particular one over half a dozen times. I watch until I think I have it all, then I go turn. Sure enough when I come back to this video months later, I learn more. Thanks for all you have done for woodturning. I expect that St. Peter has commissioned a pretty nice balustrade by now.

I understood everything! A novice to the craft and usually at a loss after watching instructional videos, but the detailed instruction was perfection. Thank you.
I love the skew chisel! At least i thought I did... then discovered I loved the narrow skew chisel. It was my go to tool when i struggled. Then i bought my own tools and found myself with a 1" demon! My confidence was shattered along with my wood.
Am now prepared to have another go. Thank you (& your wife) so much for taking the time to do this. Lots of great technical advise.

Thanks for this video, very instructional. It takes me back to my own apprenticeship. I don't think many people understand the difficulty with teaching, although I just pick up a tool and use it instinctively, I couldn't explain concisely what I was doing, This used to infuriate me. When I was teaching my 2 apprentices ( the lads are now in their late forties/fifties ), both said they found my teaching fun, lord alone knows why, I used " monkey see monkey do " method. I let them make mistakes or stopped them just before it went sideways and explained what was going to happen. Thank goodness for You Tubes decent videos. We didn't have Mobile or phones way back then, you made notes and practised and listened. Brilliant job thanks/ Jeff

It is very refreshing to see a video, where an experienced turner uses the tools properly as they were designed to. Other videos tailored for beginners use many of the tools more in a scraping than cutting action, which is awful and sometimes even dangerous. This video is excellent, as are the ones by Richard Raffan.
