A bit of bait and switch here. When he's talking about 33 runes he's *not* talking about Viking runes but rather Anglo-Frisian runes. The younger futhark of Old Norse contains only 16 characters.

Not so well done. He doesn't know Viking runes from Anglo-Frisian runes.

+dlwatib He did not specify, but he did indicate an awareness of the difference between the Elder, Younger Futhark, and the OE Futhark. This was a general video, clearly intended for those with no knowledge whatsoever. I would hold my opinion concerning whether or not he understands the difference for a more detailed conversation.

Johann Stormenssonn so say a bunch of rubbish and confuse the uninitiated or those with a lack of knowledge and call it good?

In an era when most people couldn't read, wouldn't any form of writing be seen as somewhat mystical?

are you sure those 'snakes' aren't tree branches. The people followed Odom, a tree God so, the branches may have become a stylized symbol to use on markers for writing. or antlers. Maybe the connection of tree branches and deer antlers was a mystical thing, plant life to full animation and then to grave markers.
I dont think runes should be associated with magic.

I usually liked the documentaries by this presenter, but the way that he is not respectuful towards a sacred site and more importantly the way he touches the stones with bare hands as in a PLAYGROUND (which accelerate the decay due to our oily skin secretions) is unnacceptable. By the way the V sounds that he refers carving his name is actually U, that served as V.

Careful chiseling =) Most likely etching it with a chisel and then carefully smoothing it out with either a grindstone and some water or some other tool. Finally, although most runestones have been repainted, the norsemen most likely also painted their rune stones.
I remember etching lines in rocks with flat stones dipped in water when I was a kid just for fun.

The vikings used the younger futhark runes of which there were only 16. The ones they discovered in the ango saxon lands weren't viking runes but anglo saxon runes, so a different alphabet essentially.

The Germanic Elder Futhark Runa 24 symbol's but the Junger Futhark Runa 16 symbol's.....So the Viking Age Runa is NOT of 24 symbol's at all......yes it did eventually grow into 33 symbol's.
But originally the Viking's during the Viking Age dropped 8 of the Runa out of their written language !
Evidence for this fact is that you informed that there was no "W" and they used a letter "V" instead.... which is only true of the Viking Runa, while the Germanic Elder Futhark 24 symbol's Does indeed have a "W" Wunjo !
Proving that your knowledge of the Viking Age Runa inscription's of a 24 symbol's system to be 101% incorrect !
The term secret isn't a secret when every clown in town can read your message.....hence the true Viking's only used a 16 Runa written symbol's in their inscription's.
