This Is What I was Worried About Towing An Off-Road Trailer

  • Running into an impassable trail while in a tough spot pulling the trailer has been my number one worry with our new setup. So when the road was completely covered with snow and the trail was headed up a steep portion of the mountain I was on edge getting turned around. The kids and I needed a break from the heat so we headed out on an overnight camping and overlanding trip in the Manti-La Sal National Forest. It was nice to take things slow and enjoy the mountains.

You can detach the trailer and turn the vehicle then attach the trailer

Great to see the family out! Turning around is one concern I have for a trailer in the PNW. Maybe okay if you know where you’re going, but when turning around in tight brush it would be a nightmare! I may do it one day though.

It’s rare I don’t have to turn around in a tight spot on every trip. Even this time I was somewhere I knew yet due to the snow ran into the issue. The space though… it’s so freaking nice!

I have been pulling my trailer for quite a few years now in the back country. Only 1 time did I get into a tight situation. About a hour of tree and brush cutting and I was on my way again. It is a chance you take for the comfort/convenience they offer. I'll take it. You bringing the trailer in September?
    Thanks for the video! George.

Still on the fence. Likely no. Where it will just be me I can fit in the GX really well.

I have a little bit of experience with towing prior to owning a trailer because I traveled my grandparents extensively as a youth in there camp trailer. You get use to the menueverability and if you vehicle has a good turning radius, it’s usually not too much of a problem. Something that really helps is a trailer with true independent suspension with shock absorbers because it’ll roll over and through just about anything. Hang in there your family will really enjoy the trailer.

Thanks for sharing your experience! We are enjoying it a lot. I’ve towed a lot in my life. But the main thing I was worried about with an off-road one is knowing how many times I’ve had to turn around in tight areas due to obstacles, land slides and other issues. This area in normal conditions is a breeze which is why I chose it. Big graded dirt roads but with it being early in the season the shoulders were very soft and getting flipped around this time and another the day before where I was not filming was definitely a learning experience. Worse case scenario I unhitch and it’s light enough to flip around by hand which I’ve had to do, but is a decent amount of work .

Looks like you had a blast. The snow is so sneaky on those mountain roads. It seems way too hot for there to still be snow.

Drove up that road in '23 and enjoyed the old cabins and pictographs. Glad to see your video since I've been thinking about a trailer for a few years and plan to retire in a couple more. I recall loading an '82.5 Westy Diesel in '08 to the gills and driving from Portland to Yosemite, without a reservation. All good. Exhausting since it was always play/explore time for the children while I cooked, cleaned, un/packed, drove and did it all again, every day. jejeje At least the children were impressed forever with a love for the wilds.

Hey, glad to see you back on the trails. I have not been out for a year now. Last time I watched was when you had the Jeep. How are you liking the GX so far? Last time I saw you was when we did Horse thief Canyon for the Petroglyphs. I may be switching my expedition for a quad cab F150 and my trailer. I like the idea of the offroad trailer without having to climb up from a lifted rig. I understand the drawbacks, but a base camp in the right area makes for a better experience sometimes. Looking forward to catching up in the future. Cheers till then my friend.
I found a great trail not too far from Aurora Utah and Scipio if you are interested.
    Cheers.

The base camp ability is really nice! We are loving the GX it was essential after having our 4th kid. I’d love the checkout that trail!

IMO, towing a trailer is for glamping only. We find a nice full hookup park, setup the trailer then explore all day long and return in the evening to cook, clean up and sleep.
I also do 4wd camping without the trailer for places that require 4wd.
    These are two different things.

I can see the appeal. This trailer will go anywhere the rig will. But has way less amenities. But needed the storage to camp as a family of 6. I love the base camp and wheel idea. Likely one we will do once the kids are grown.
