  • Crystals & Stones you can find in Texas:
Texas isn’t very well known for its rockhounding, but there are still crystals to be found in this interesting state. Most of the best areas for rockhounding in this state are in streams and stream beds as well as exposed hillsides. Given the enormous size of the state, Texas is surprisingly lacking in its variety of minerals. The most common minerals found in Texas include agate which you can find pretty much anywhere, are chalcedony, petrified wood, jasper, quartz, and barite.
The state mineral is silver and the state gemstone is Blue Topaz. In Texas, blue topaz is only found in centrally located Mason County, particularly the towns of Mason and Grit. There are three ranches in the area which are open to the public for topaz hunting - Seaquist Ranch, Bar M Ranch, and Lindsay Ranch, all of which are fairly close to one another.
As a disclaimer, always make sure you double-check with the owners of these mines, areas, and pieces of property as some sites may not allow rockhounding and may be completely closed. Of course, make sure you’re doing additional research before heading out to any of these locations, and be sure to be careful and respectful when out searching in allowed areas. It’s important that we preserve the land, geology, and natural resources provided by the land.

I've heard, from visiting Mason, that Lindsey ranch is the only one allowing collecting.

@InfamousChemists bummer!! I found topaz a few years ago, that I just recently had confirmed that it was topaz!!! Well, it lit the fire of hunting some more, but they're all closed now.
