  • We have recently come back from 23 days in Italy and wanted to share some of the travel tips and learnings. Please share any of your tips/learnings.
In no particular order some of the Travel tips/learnings are:
Pick pockets are real so keep your eyes open and have the people you are with watching out for them. One ploy we saw was to have a girl ask a gentleman to take her photo and then the pick pockets would come in while you are concentrating on taking a picture.
You need to cover your shoulders and knees when going into churches. Also take your hat off.
Gluten free was available but you had to ask. Europe uses a 14 number code to list Allergens, not all places displayed this but where they did you had a very good idea what was in a dish.
Language - in general we found that English with some poor Italian would work.
No Ironing facilities in the room nor do they have laundry rooms
If you like a coffee/tea in your room not all places offer a jug
    Smoking - it is everywhere
In the Amalfi Coast the bathrooms in hotels are extremely small
It costs more to sit down and eat at cafes etc.
Traffic Lights are there to look pretty and zebra crossings are just for decoration. Hence when you cross the road you need to tell the cars to stop, and they will otherwise they just keep going even if you are on a pedestrian crossing.
Give them good feedback as they are very proud of the service they offer.
    Money
Italy likes cash but will accept credit cards.
You might find that “tap” with your credit card may not work and if this is the case get them to insert the card and try again. I think this might be a ploy to get you to pay cash.
Make sure before you leave you check on what international transaction fees apply to each transaction. Many banks provide credit/debit cards with no international transaction fees (naturally a currency conversion at the bank exchange rate will apply).
If a credit card machine asks you what currency to do the transaction in select “Euro” as using your home currency will get an extra transaction/conversion fee, approx. 3%
If you are buying something and claiming the VAT back when you leave Italy, make sure you use a credit card to put the VAT back onto. We were using a Visa Debit card and this will not work.
    Public Toilets
Public toilets are not the cleanest nor in the best condition.
You will need to pay to use them, approx. 1 Euro
At automatic toilets there is no change and no credit card facilities.
Also don’t expect there to be toilet paper, soap or paper towels to dry your hands
Best advice is to buy something at a restaurant/shop and then you can use their toilet which is normally better.
    Electronics
Italy uses two different power sockets (Type F and L) and 230 volts. Depending on region and age of the building will determine the plug being used. The adaptor (type F) we had worked in the first few hotels but after that it didn’t fit but what we did find was on the hair dryer or kettles/jugs they had a converter, and we were able to plug our adapter into that converter and then that into the power socket.
Take a power board with a long lead and USB charging sockets.
    Camera capacity
We took over 3,000 photos with our mirrorless camera, over 1000 videos with the GoPro and 2,500 on the iPhones. Peter’s iPhone rang out of capacity early in the trip otherwise we would have taken more. So, think about how much storage you will need and how you back it up as you go.
Also think about extra batteries for your devices as you will need to charge them on a more regular basis. We were lucky in that the bus had USB charging and Internet so we could charge and backup to the cloud while in the bus.

This makes me smile - we’re so different. We made coffee without a jug in the room we asked them to bring us a kettle, we got a teapot with boiling water in it 🤣🤣
For that reason I prefer Air BNB - way better catered for us Aussies
Also - 4 stars in Italy is not 4 stars here we definitely did it better the second time.

This is why I don’t go to Europe, just shocking, Milan was Ok, Paris and Rome just awful, other European cities not that friendly. I prefer travelling elsewhere 🙂 not to mention prices.
