  • In this video I make a cross peen hammer from a piece of truck axle. This steel was very tough to forge and with my poor punches and drifts it took a lot of time.
I left the part when my drift broke just to show how steel breaks when it's improperly heat treated.
For the handle I used a broken off axe handle that I got as a gift. I made it into an octogonal shape which is very comfortable to use and hold.
If you want to see a real expert forge a cross peen hammer watch this video from Brent Bailey:

I can see you put a lot of work into that, but it turned out very nice.

Good job! A lot of work and a broken tool but you got there in the end. I need a smaller cross peen... perhaps I will make a little one... once my hydrolic press gets here in 2 weeks. :)

Hey, do you know what kind of truck you pulled this off of? We have a local car scrap yard and I picked 3 axles, and the largest was only about an inch and a half diameter.

That is a pretty nice job, how long did you have doing the actual forging?

+Skip Tracer I've been forging for about a year and half but I forge very rarely and apart from a couple of failed attempts I've documented all of my forgings. So my first project was that small axe followed by a hammer and again an axe... This summer I've had more forging sessions and a lot more videos are coming ( I just have to edit them.)

you did an amazing job! making my own hammer has been on my list of things for very long. I had no idea that it was possible on my own. Annoying when you're forging and your tools fail.....
how do you keep your welded handle on? The heat and vibrations make the welds fall off of my piece so I have to reweld the handle again and again.

+knives&stuff Sometimes my handles also break and I just weld them again but now I usually do some multi pass welds and then they rarely break.

knives&stuff You could drill a hole in the tool it self and stick the handle in it. Then just weld over it
