Always loved them, but I didn't know their proper care. I got back into them recently after stumbling across some care videos on RUclips. 4. Nothing too special. I don't have access to much else unless I mail order. 9. Water culture. ALMOST took that route to revive a "rescue" phal, and decided against it after seeing your videos. 10. It has not lost a single leaf (11 now I believe - 2 or 3 leaves grew this summer). As far as flowers, though, it might actually be my "New View" which is sadly not doing all that great. That one has a combo of purple, pink, and white (spots, streaks, and veins). 11. None yet? 12. DO YOUR RESEARCH! Read! Watch videos! Learn! There is not just one method. There is not an "ideal" medium. There is not a specific watering routine. Etc. 13. Wait for the roots to silver to water (Phalaenopsis). I have made changes to the medium to have my plants dry out faster, but even when they were taking about a month to dry, it's totally fine. Keep waiting. 14. Phals (I can't find much else locally). 15. I don't like to hoard knowledge. That said, I'm still really new to orchids, but I do like to share tips when I have them. 16. I do keep a spreadsheet where I track when I water, repot, or fertilize my orchids. Other than this, I don't do anything too weird or interesting. None of my 75-80 house plants have names or genders.
Nice JC! Always good to know more about other orchid growers - next step: make a video! I know it's a bit of a leap, but if you're thinking about it...I encourage you to make the leap :)
Really appreciate the tact and diplomacy with which you're describing some growing method's culture. Your orchid info is so helpful! I grow in Boston, MA and while its not as cold as your part of Calgary, I have to use heat at least 5/6 months out of the year to be honest. Semi-hydro and full-hydro absolutely do not work for me. Fast way for me to create rotted roots on an orchid. I have a smallish collection and realized that the investment in good organic medium (amended for aeration) is the most reliable way for me to grow. It also allows for me to dissolve accumulated salts/etc. and I've noticed across the board that my orchids' roots are much happier.
Thanks for saying that about Semi Hydro. I killed a lot of orchids too. I started to use organic media in semi hydro, and it works great for my very dry area.
Orchid Garden - Extremely polar! It’ll be -30c outside one day and +5 the next. And then in summer it’s mild (18-25c most days). BUT...humidity wise, it’s frequently very low for weeks at a time (18-45% indoors) and I keep my condo set at 17c so in the winter the areas closest the windows go down to about 15c at the lowest and in the summer the max is generally around 29/30c

Hey Lucythecat! With the Gaia green, you really only want to apply that a couple times a year. Once at repot and a second time later on...so it’s okay that you haven’t been using it a lot. And just a small amount per pot 1/8-1/4tsp (or less for small pots). Looking forward to seeing your tag video though. Let me know when it’s up and I’ll add it to the blog post with the other tags

Orchid Nerd - hahaha Haaaiii 👋🏻 Well If anyone is a candidate for how great semihydro can be, you are at the top of my list. But in all honesty my response with regards to S/H came out of a discussion with Ray (the creator of the S/H method) on a forum. He was kind of recruiting and kind of irked me-so that section of the video was really more to illuminate that some methods just don’t work as well. Just found your videos and really enjoy and learn from them..your plants look so healthy!...am currently growing Phals, putting them outdoors in the summer where they get a couple hours of direct morning sun and then bright indirect light the rest of the day...fertilize weakly weekly with commercial orchid fertilizer along with an occasional dose of fish emulsion....they are doing well, putting out monster size leaves, so guess I am doing something right!..currently have them indoors and 2 are spiking in an east window..also use grow lights for the winter..,I buy my plants at Walmart or Trader Joe's...around 10 bucks a pop....no orchid shows in my area to buy from...also have some paphs that bloom for me..love them, they are so bizarre looking..Alice in Wonderland flowers!...your vandas look happy and healthy..do they bloom for you?...I thought they required high heat and humidity to thrive...anyway, thanks for your videos!
Thanks Rob; I really appreciate the positive feedback. Sounds like you have a wonderful collection - I wish I could grow them outdoors like you...I really do believe that some amount of unfiltered sunlight provides more to our plants than lights ever could. I passively think that they need a hit of UVC/UVB/UVA to help with growth...but for now the 'chids get what they get. I haven't had my vandas bloom yet - but I have hopes that it will happen soon. I think because they are growing under less-ideal conditions indoors, they need more foliage to power the flowers. I could be out to lunch though. If I get them to bloom, i'll definitely do a video on it. Hey there....thanks for your reply...yes, the orchids love their time on the porch in the spring and summer..full sun for 2 hours in the morning, then the rest of the day they get light filtered through the oak tree branches.,.I live on the edge of a forest in midwestern US..we have moderately high humidity levels...the orchids love that bigtime, along with my birds nest and rabbit's foot ferns, caladiums, begonias, several kinds of elephant ears, ti plants, etc etc...it's a veritable jungle around here!...btw, what is the Phal shown early on in this video?.....I want it!....it's a beauty!
@@robsanders5808 If you're referring to the one at 30 seconds, I think that's Phal Tying-Shin Champion 'Cinnamon' - however, that's a guess - it's technically a NOID :)
Great “tag” video, and one of your best. Love the additional Q&A so you could elaborate on your orchids and growing experiences. I live in an apartment and understand the constraints. I’m constantly moving plants to maximize light, air flow and humidity. I’m lucky to have a screened porch where some plants can reside in summer months. You do an amazing job with your orchids and other plants. They always look healthy and beautiful! Thanks, Dustin!
Thanks Marilynn! I really appreciate the feedback and I’m glad I’m improving haha - better than the alternative. I have always wanted to grow plants outside but I’m a bit worried they might not fare well outdoors here. Perhaps I’ll have to give it a shot one day.
So great video!!! I really enjoyed very much. Also so nice that we have same favorite genera - Phalaenopsis! I grow them really easy and they are growing so nice at my windowsil. I really adore watching your plants! Happy growing!!!
Thank you for this video, you’ve answered some questions that I’ve had about the environment I have my phals and what they may thrive better in, the type of lighting, etc.Very informative👍🏽
Old video but my biggest orchids peeve is telling people you cannot get water into a crown because will cause a rot 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️. I have been watering my orchids from above , leaving water in a crown and not rotting them so Danii from Miss Orchids Girl I am looking at you!! you really need to rethink the advice you are giving out!!!!
Hi! Your videos seem super helpful and I am trying out your logical recommendations. Currently trying to re-hydrate a solitary 2016 orchid gift which has 2 spikes and was re-flowering before I repotted/removing old packed moss into a 100% fresh bark in a clay pot this summer...now I see this may have been too 'dry' a medium for yyc. I am a bread maker so I will try to discern plant hydration level by weighing my one pot after soaking and then when it gets dry with my kitchen scale. Is that a citrus tree I see behind your head at 22:37? If so it looks way more healthy than ours which is 30 years old...Appreciate your hard work on these videos!
Can you please do a repotting video? I'm still having trouble with how loose or compact the media should be. What's your winter indoor humidity? It's currently 18-25% here in Ottawa without a humidifier (30-45% with) and the leaves on my phals are suffering.
I can and will - and I'll use it to talk more about the different media and how they work with your climate to modify water retention. Regarding your questions specifically, my humidity is low like yours often 18-40%. I don't run any humidifiers. If your phal leaves are suffering and the roots are good, then you likely need to water more often...or at least soak them for a longer period of time. If you want to message me photos of your plants on Facebook, I can provide better help on this. I would also suggest you read this post (herebutnot.com/how-we-grow-orchids-in-calgary-alberta-canada/) I think it covers a lot of the questions you have about mid-way down in the post.
Nice video ...very informative . I checked out 2 of Bennet Riley's video , thank you for sharing . I am now a subscriber to his channel and also your's . Again thank you for sharing .
Are you channeling your inner Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) with that plaid (maybe also flannel)?😘 I'm all about experimenting to see what works, I've got a pile of failures to prove it. My current experiment is Dendrobium victoria-reginae. I've talked to one person (literally one) that says that it can be grown here in Florida, despite being a cool grower, provided it grows in total shade during the hot months. Three months in, it is still alive and growing. 🤞
That’s wicked about your victoria-reginae-I loooove that dendrobium. Glad to hear it’s growing well for you. Haha and regarding the plaid-flannel-it’s winter, eh ;)
@@HerebutNot I think v-r is one of those orchids that everyone wants to grow because it is so close to being blue. I figured for $29, I'd give it a try even though it might die. Probably a lot of people buy them and they die, right? Winter came early here. It was 16.5 this morning and yesterday. I had to put on a long sleeve shirt and jacket. My friend in NY told me to stop complaining, they were at -1.
Great Video Thank you Feel I got to know you better. So true that is the challenge how to be a leader in our own grow spaces and not followers of popular RUclipsrs but still using their ideas to maybe help us Modify things in our spaces. Great answers and that phal is as big as your head lol
Andrew’s orchid balcony - totally! It’s tough to “read between the lines” as growers and as mentors...but it’s good. I think even knowing that caveat is important too - moving more toward “this might work” and away from “this always works” or “this does work”
Here...but Not true it’s funny because I kinda scoffed at inorganics and semihydro but now almost everything I have is in a form of semihydro and with some mixture of organics and inorganics, and for the most part I think my plants do fairly well although I lost some orchids here and there but that is when I analyze where I may have gone wrong. And that is part of how we learn. Thanks again great video
Hey Love the videos and blog! Is this the organic fert u use? Gaia Green Organic 4-4-4 All Purpose Fertilizer How much would u add to a typical phal ( as an example) and how often
When the humidity is low, evaporation happens more quickly. So the top layer of Leca dries faster, and you have conditions that are bone dry for new roots. If you’re curious, give it a go. We learn by trial and experimentation, so just try it and see for yourself what does and doesn’t work
Spencer - yeah, it seems to start and stop every year or two. I have your video in the timeline, but if you do an updated one, let me know and I’ll add the new video too
Spencer Aloysius - oh sorry! I thought for sure I had seen yours. I must have watched your unboxing video after a bunch of tags and filed it together in the back of my brain. Haha
Hello, tell me what is your méthode to make the protocormes grow up well in-vitro, I have mines dying and this is something terrible for me. 😟 Also where does the media from ? Do you make it ? 🙂 (Sorry if you andswear it in à video, I didn't watched all yet and i'm French, so i understand à bit but not everything)😅
If you have difficults to germinate paphiopedilum's and phragmipedium's seeds, it's because they are sort of alike terrestrial orchids. You need to put thoses in full darkness for at least 5 mouths, I did this with my paphiopedilum spicerianum's seeds and it work perfectly. This was a advise of a old orchidophil wich come from Belgique.
Hey Dustin! I'm wondering how to get droopy phal leaves that are hydrated to perk back up. I have checked roots there fine, I also have them in a east to south facing window or some are in a south west window so they get lots of sun. They are growing but the newer leave are also smaller. All I can think of is that I need to get a different fertilizer. Help🙏😰😁
Hi Sandie - if you have a Facebook account, message me on Herebutnot and include photos. It’s hard to provide advice without seeing the plant. To answer your question about droopy leaves, generally they don’t regain full turgor - but sometimes they do if they weren’t severely dehydrated. I’m more concerned about the “newer leaves are smaller” - sometimes common upon root loss, but after 1 or 2 leaves, you should be back to regular size
grow proteas - I add it to the potting mix when repotting, and then in spring and summer on top of the media sprinkled around just after watering. I only use 1/8-1/4 tsp per pot though.
Hi! You said something in this video that made me curious but what's the wattage output of your LED grow lights (or whatever else parameter is used to measure the strength of lights)? I have my orchids under a 15W full spectrum LED grow light and they seem to be doing well (i think) though I'm thinking of upping it to a 25W full spectrum LED grow light. I'm worried about overloading the chlorophyl like you mentioned but I don't have any reference to what may be "too much." If it's worth the information, my 15W LED is about 2.5 ft above all my orchids. They're kept in 65% humidity, temperature ranging currently from the low to mid 60s indoors. Thank you for these really informative videos!
Luigi - my lights are 48” - 48w. So about 12w/square foot. To know if the light is too much...watch the leaves and growth. You want them at the upper limit but not so much that it burns them...right? But to burn them, you likely need at least 24w+ per square foot...so test and see and if your plants look stressed, then decrease light a bit.
@@HerebutNot Hey! That's the perfect response, thank you! This 15W bulb of mine exclusively lights up my "favorites" collection, which takes up about a 2ft x 1ft area. If i get a 25W bulb, it'll be roughly 12.5W per square foot and so somewhat identical to what you have. I appreciate the specificity of your answers. If I could follow up with something else, I recall you mentioned that you water twice a week but only twice for those that no longer have condensation on the pots. I've found that my pots retain condensation for almost a week. May I ask what your general humidity ranges are? Mine are kept steady at 65% by an automatic humidifier which might be the reason for the retained condensation.
Luigi - yeah, no worries! My humidity is 40% generally. And the only ones I water twice a week are the seedlings generally. They have less media and smaller pots, so they dry faster
I’m an orchid looser. Keep them in a bright area, make sure the roots are aired, the leaves and air roots look great but not one stinking flower. 2 years and NOT ONE!
I recently got 3 new delenatii and I grow them in very low humidity like 30% at night to 50% during the day. I expected some of them to die because of my dry growing condition. Now about 2 weeks have passed and some the their leaves look like they mysteriously got damaged and it really concerns me lol. Do you also have delenatii and do they survive in your condition which Is also low in humidity?
Hiiii!!! Um, so I have a delenatii hybrid (Ho Chi Min)-mine does okay with my lower humidity. I think higher humidity would likely be better, but I haven’t killed mine yet. The biggest key for success with mine has been to keep the roots evenly moist but airy, and provide moderately bright light. Also, they don’t like a lot of minerals, so I use about 1/4 fertilizer for all of my paphs.

Yes !! “The plants meow “ is amazing

Thanks Cathy - look forward to "growing together" haha :)
Are you channeling your inner Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) with that plaid (maybe also flannel)?😘
I'm all about experimenting to see what works, I've got a pile of failures to prove it.
This was really fun!
Thanks Gabrielle! Glad you enjoyed the mini tour and interview :)
Great Video Thank you Feel I got to know you better. Understand Climate because here in Salmon Arm BC, we also get very cold snowy winters, also tried semi hydro and killed a beautiful orchid so, do not want to try again. Loved all your healthy orchids, and the large one set me to drooling :0) anyway lotsa fun and thanks again
Ah thank you! I love Salmon Arm - my parents used to have a place out there off the golf course - they ended up moving over to the other side of the lake, but it's so beautiful there. Thanks for stopping by and for the kind words
@@HerebutNot Small world I lived over by the Golf Course for years on a small farm, and all the animals :0) maybe sold them milk eggs or vegetables Carolyn
Luv your videos 😍, that big Phal is how old?
I have had that one for about 3 years. It was only about 6 leaves when I bought it. Now it has... ~20 haha
Hey Love the videos and blog!
Is this the organic fert u use?
Gaia Green Organic 4-4-4 All Purpose Fertilizer
How much would u add to a typical phal ( as an example) and how often
Is the peatmoss you use white or black?
It's pitchers plant ...in our language we call tiew Rakod, sir
Hi! Could anyone explain why semi hydro doesn't work in dry environment?🙏🙏🙏 I was thinking of this growing method to save time, but now I have doubts😕
When the humidity is low, evaporation happens more quickly. So the top layer of Leca dries faster, and you have conditions that are bone dry for new roots. If you’re curious, give it a go. We learn by trial and experimentation, so just try it and see for yourself what does and doesn’t work
Cute that this game has been restarted.
Spencer - yeah, it seems to start and stop every year or two. I have your video in the timeline, but if you do an updated one, let me know and I’ll add the new video too
I think you have confused me with someone else since I’ve never done a video.
Spencer Aloysius - oh sorry! I thought for sure I had seen yours. I must have watched your unboxing video after a bunch of tags and filed it together in the back of my brain. Haha
@@HerebutNot No, I've never participated in the orchid tag and your general 'tag' doesn't include me since I've had my channel longer than 2 years. ;)
Spencer Aloysius - haha. Whaaaatever, like I said, it’s not a popularity game. Do it up!
Hello, tell me what is your méthode to make the protocormes grow up well in-vitro, I have mines dying and this is something terrible for me. 😟
Also where does the media from ? Do you make it ? 🙂
(Sorry if you andswear it in à video, I didn't watched all yet and i'm French, so i understand à bit but not everything)😅
Do you mix the Gaia in water to fertilize, like once a month? Or just add the powder every few months to the top of the orchid container?
grow proteas - I add it to the potting mix when repotting, and then in spring and summer on top of the media sprinkled around just after watering. I only use 1/8-1/4 tsp per pot though.
Keep it up bro👍👌
I'm worried about overloading the chlorophyl like you mentioned but I don't have any reference to what may be "too much."
If it's worth the information, my 15W LED is about 2.5 ft above all my orchids.
I haven’t started yet I got a spider plant snake plant I got my plants but not orchids
😍😍👍👍
I’m an orchid looser. Keep them in a bright area, make sure the roots are aired, the leaves and air roots look great but not one stinking flower. 2 years and NOT ONE!
Hi ))))
I recently got 3 new delenatii and I grow them in very low humidity like 30% at night to 50% during the day. I expected some of them to die because of my dry growing condition. Now about 2 weeks have passed and some the their leaves look like they mysteriously got damaged and it really concerns me lol. Do you also have delenatii and do they survive in your condition which Is also low in humidity?
Also the ))) is the smile sign we use here in Russia :) )
