Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Biggest Tires - What Size Fits On Stock Ride Height?

- We went to get new tires for the 2018 Outlander Sport and thought, “What’s the biggest All-Terrain tire that would fit on this rig and really fill up the wheel well...?”
After some research on forums, and the very few photos of A/Ts on Outlander Sports... we didn’t come up with a definitive answer.
So we special ordered a set of four Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail tires in 255/55/18 on the stock wheels. They are 6 ply and come with an estimated 68,000 miles wear.
The look of the SUV is significantly more Aggressive and off-road looking.
Previously, I had installed Ralliart Universal mud flaps on the Outlander. Only the front two mud flaps had to be further cut back. After this, the stock inner fenders in the front still slightly rubbed on both the front and back stock fenders, typically only when turning full tilt and especially in reverse.
If this didn’t bother a person, you could get away with just leaving it and stuffing these bigger tires onto the vehicle and only rub once in a while in parking lots.
Instead of cutting a hole and opening up components to salt and snow and debris, I heated the plastic and bent it slightly to accommodate the tires just enough.
There was no more rubbing on the front after this.
The one thing I did find is on higher speeds with a hard bump, the back wheels can slightly graze the upper fender, but not significantly. Keep in mind this is very seldom and haven’t seen any wear marks on the inner fender or the tire after about a month running these tires.
If you’re overly worried, go with one size smaller.
But if you do a little work, you can maximize your tire size. 😁
There was no speedometer difference with these bigger tires, and no significant road noise added. In fact, I think it made it quieter. And smoother. No noticeable acceleration lag. No noticeable fuel economy loss. A bit more ground clearance.
The only thing I did notice was the immediate feeling of the vehicle definitely went from more touchy and sporty- to feeling a little more rugged and meatier. I’d equate it to a running shoe vs a hiking shoe; both are great for whatever you’re using them for. Running shoes are lighter and have more agility, while hiking boots are heavier duty and grip better for the situation.

I have 29” 235/70/16 mud terrain tires on my outlander sport. Stock is 27.7” tires at 225/55/18. I also have a 1.5” ADF spacer and H&R springs 1.2” for a total of 2.7” inch lift. No rubbing at all. I’m thinking of going bigger and putting 31” tires.
Another good wildpeak size that I run on mine is 225/60r18. No rubbing and equal to about 1 inch of extra clearance. I also have the H&R spring lift and 40mm strut spacers now so I kinda wish I went with these size tires instead. Nice to see someone putting vids like this up, not much info for these vehicles out there!
What is the h&r lift?
@@shawnhaley8275 just increased height springs. Anyway don't change the springs, just use a spacer kit 20/30 and 40mm kits are available. The 40mm kits can be poly or solid steel, which is what I have.
Its cheaper to buy a DGR coilover kit and install thay that along with a spacer kit. Tema 4x4 etc
@@DoubtingThomas333 can you elaborate on your set up? i ordered the 40mm spacer and would like to add a coilover when i install. did you have to swap any other parts that didnt line up afer your install?

@@Thiccums423 soon after this post I sold the outlander to carvana and returned the spacers. Install of spacers seemed they would've been very easy however and coils would've been unnecessary. I ended up buying a 02 grand Cherokee 4x4 for my camping and hunting vehicle and still have it. There simple isn't much made to gain clearance for the outlanders.

It’s a MaxxHaul brand rack, we did a custom carbon fiber vinyl wrap on it and got the Star Wars decals online.

Have you had any problems with the tires hitting the strut/spring/suspension assembly while off-roading? I ordered BF KO2 255/55/18 from Costco and they wouldn’t install it because they said it was too close and would void the warranty.
Those rubber lift spacers work wonders on the back
Running a 215/70r16 on my lancer stock suspension. Gonna be throwing outlander sport struts on it for more clearance, but running the same Falken Wildpeak AT Trails 👍

Is it possible to put 245 60 R18 on stock height? Or it would be too much?
Think I am gonna use a heat gun and just form my plastic in a bit for clearance
235/60 R18 ‘s with a little rub. They have been on a while, but I haven’t hit the plastic with heat yet. The rub is minimal. Unfortunately, the rub was even more minimal before I put beefier springs in that gave me 1.5” lift. I thought I would get less rub, but those are the dimension factors, I guess. All in all, the space between tire and fender is much better. I was having trouble standing on the tire for roof access before the lift. Now the visuals of that space above the tire is very fitting, plus the ride is much better for the rural areas I mostly drive in and the backroads for trail access. I am considering a lift for Jeep Compass/Patriot (Doge Caliber) to fit to my 🇨🇦 RVR. There might be a slight difference of how the linkages mount to the control arms, but looks like a minor mod, or mine might just be tired enough that I might be able to switch out of the Japanese style control arms for American style and do the lift as is.

Hi so i want to buy a 2010 mitsubishi outlander , can i fit 33" tyres on it without a lift kit ? And is it legal in europe ?

As far as fitment I highly doubt you’ll be able to squeeze 33s without a lift, these are 255/55/18 and seem to be the maximum stock size one can go on this vehicle, which I think equates to around 29” total.

Did you fit the 255 in your stock rim 18x7.0? If so, any side effects to it being more flexy in corners etc? I'm thinking of doing the tyre to 29' as well but using a different route of 235/60R18.
Yes they were on the stock wheel. They are a bit more like what I’d describe as a hiking boot as opposed to a running shoe; both get the job done for different terrain, but have different feeling and handling. The AT tire isn’t as sharp as the stock tire, but seems to grip better in off road or snow conditions.

I’m not sure exactly but this is an LE which I would assume has the same chassis, these tires are 255/55/18 on OEM 18 inch wheels.

Why didnt you just remove the mud flap?
We live in the Midwest and didn’t want snow/ice/salt/mud thrown and packed on the rocker panel.
Keeps the risk of rust way down and keeps the vehicle cleaner.
Any issues rubbing when going over speed bumps hitting dips at high speeds or anything like that?
Very rarely going over say a bumpier bridge transition at 75ish mph you may hear the rear touch, but not even rub enough to cause scuffs on the under fender lining.
Otherwise, no. Would buy the same size again.

Did you notice any performance drop does the transmission seem to be able to handle them like factory? I'm just trying to figure out if I would have to regear it.
I was worried about that too, like the sport would be gone!
The best way I could describe it is a running shoe vs a hiking boot.. doesn’t quite have the same agility but can go bounds over what your sport tires can do. Not a huge difference but more confidence in a 4 seasons if that makes sense.
Yeah I'm running stock sized falcon wildpeaks I plan to do a 1.5 inch body lift and go up to this size tire as well. I do a lot of off roading I this little soccer mom car that I grew to love. Theoretically with these tires and the body lift I should be able to get around 11inch of ground clearance with out having to adjust the front drive lines amd only needing to add a camber arm in the back (some go without it but I would rather have it).
It felt different going all terrain even stock size but that was handling wise. So would you say acceleration or gas was drastically reduced. On the stick size a/t acceleration wasnt effected and my mpg dropped only 2-3mpg
@@dakotah1828 I agree on the handling, it’s less sporty for sure but feels more grippy now, like a different vehicle almost now. We like it personally, and great for trails or off roading!

There was a little bit of rubbing in the front when turning but I heated the plastic and bent it in the video to make it stop and give room

I would say so, since it barely rubbed in the front before.

Not really nosier, bigger tires are almost quieter in my opinion. The steering feels a bit less sharp and sporty, feels more off road like a pickup or jeep I’d say.

That’s a good question... we haven’t had that many, but we loaded a roof rack and had 100 lb dog at the very back and there was no extra rubbing.
