01:30 This is a famous Okinawan folk song “Tinsagu nu Hana”. I love Ryukyuan culture. Ryukyu Kingdom had a long trading relationship with Siam (Thailand) since Ayutthaya period. Two Okinawan cultural stuffs, Awamori and Sanshin, are associated with history of Thailand: Awamori is made of indica rice with distillation technique from Siam, and Sanshins are historically made of snakeskin imported from Siam.

Funny that the Europeans, from the Portuguese to the Dutch naval empires, did and could not entirely bother to start a scuffle with the Ryuku Kingdom compared to it's southern horizons, prior to the Satsuma invasion.
And the Treasure Armada Admiral Zheng He did not come to it's shores, but of mere Ming migrants did and influenced Okinawan society throughout the tumultuous age in the Japanese Ashikaga shogunate, completing their subjugation of the last Aji Princes by the time Oda Nobunaga dealt with the Azai, Asakura, and Ikko Ikki enemies.

the Spanish who settled in northern taiwan would have had the most interest before in taking from the ryukyu kingdom but the timeline shows that ryukyu managed to unite their archipelago before the spaniards and dutch came to taiwan. from what ive read before, toyotomi hideyoshi was also threatening spanish manila before that they would sack the place if the spaniards had the balls to encrouch further northwards, but hideyoshi instead invaded korea in the imjin war. the portuguese territory as per the treaty of tordesillas was a little further to the west. ryukyu was already beyond their agreed lines with spain. the philippines was just an exception the portuguese allowed the spaniards before, just as the spaniards allowed the portuguese with brazil

That did not go well for the colonial Portuguese, to whom did not want their deal in the Tordesillas to be altered, yet prior to King Philip II's Iberian Union. Imma see right now if this piece of history from a textbook is either correct or wrong rn.

In the 16th century, Haneji Choshu wrote a book about the common ancestry of Japan and Ryukyu. Shunten's ancestor is Minamotono Tametomo, a relative of the Emperor of Japan. For this reason, many Ryukyuan people have Tomo in their names. The languages of Japan and Okinawa are Japanese and Ryukyu languages.
