  • Radio RSA: The Voice of South Africa was the international broadcasting service of the Republic of South Africa. It was run by the South African Broadcasting Corporation from its inception on 1 May 1966 until its demise in 1992
    An interval signal, or tuning signal, is a characteristic sound or musical phrase used in international broadcasting and by some domestic broadcasters, played before commencement or during breaks in transmission, but most commonly between programmes in different languages. It serves several purposes:
    It assists a listener to tune his or her radio to the correct frequency of the station. This is because most older and cheaper radio receivers do not have digital frequency readout.
    It informs other stations that the frequency is in use.
    It serves as a station identifier even if the language used in the subsequent broadcast is not one the listener understands.

    One of the most exciting dx games/events was when Radio RSA hosted a competition. They announced their programme and freq. Then they said they would go to another band and freq and there they would announce their next move. First it was 250kW, then 100kW and the next at 50kW and then 10. It was like a treasure hunt. I became 1st runner-up and got a beautiful book about S.Africa and a full A4 enlargement of their QSL. What fun we had and the interval signal was the one that was played for each leg of the competition. Glory days of SW. and we are blessed to have experienced and enjoyed those years.💖❤

    Radio RSA was the first SW broadcast station I ever heard. I'll never forget the interval signal, the birds and the folk guitar tune, and then the programs. I still have the National Geographic map of Southern Africa I used, with which I would look up and ID the various cities and regions they mentioned in their broadcasts. I always heard R. RSA on the 25 meter band, during the late afternoon. Even heard them play a song by the SA rock band Rabbitt, probably in 1977. Thanks for posting this sound clip. I still tune the SW bands from time to time. Ironically, I've heard Southern Africa on 25 meters and 31 meters a couple times recently -- some religious broadcasters transmitting from Madagascar, and a VOA outlet in Botswana. All on a portable, Grundig G2. So even though the past several years have been hard on SW, there still are days where one can hear something. You just have to get lucky, i guess, when the ionosphere is friendly. :-) Peace out to all.

    • @chriscampbell9191
      @chriscampbell9191 2 года назад

      @@RJDA.Dakota Yes, I saw one of Stingray's albums in a used record store here (probably a compilation album -- that usually happened with overseas acts, especially from Oz or the RSA, and even second tier UK acts) once (the LP was in brand new condition) and bought it. Very good band, although I preferred Rabbitt overall.

    • @RJDA.Dakota
      @RJDA.Dakota 2 года назад

      @@chriscampbell9191 Stingray has a local connection as well because a local FM station played their songs. Outside of that I heard from them because of an intro on either Radio RSA or Springbok Radio. Springbok was a commercial service on 4810 kHz at one time. It was amazing to hear local broadcast radio from South Africa. 🇿🇦

    • @chriscampbell9191
      @chriscampbell9191 2 года назад +1

      @@RJDA.Dakota I might have heard Springbok Radio once, but I don't remember clearly if I did or not. I always tried for that, Radio Sonder Grense (?) and other Southern African SW outlets, but never was lucky enough to hear any. Just Radio RSA. Now, I seem to hear VOA out of Botswana frequently enough, and the various stations out of Madagascar.
      As for RSA music, mostly I just know about Rabbitt, and Stingray. Thee was a folk singer out of RSA or Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) named Tony Bird whose album I got. And Juluka, of course. I got their single when it was played on local radio here. I never heard those other bands on R. RSA, though... Just Rabbitt..
      Since the internet, of course, I've checked out a few RSA bands and artists from that era, as well as later on. A lot of them are quite good.

    • @chriscampbell9191
      @chriscampbell9191 2 года назад

      There are still broadcasters using the 25 meter band. Overall SW conditions since 2016 have made it hit and miss, however. I've heard religious broadcasters from Madagascar on the 25 meter band recently, so there are still some signals to be heard -- if one tunes in during a 'good' day. Amazonia on 11780 is back on various evenings here in the US, depending on propagation. It was MIA for several years.

      @@chriscampbell9191 You are confusing 25 meter band with the 25 Megahertz Band (25.79 MHz in 11 meter band) which even during peak years was lightly used. It was only reliable during peak sunspot years, and mostly north-south paths, which was perfect to broadcast to the African continent from South Africa.
