  • Back in January, Xavi announced he would be stepping down as Barcelona boss at the end of the season, citing the role as a “cruel job” that “wears you down”.
But last week, he and Barca changed their minds - yet another twist in a rollercoaster season for the Catalans. So, why did Barca perform a dramatic U-turn on Xavi’s future and how strong is his position now?
Ayo is joined by The Athletic’s Pol Ballus and Tomas Hill Lopez-Menchero to discuss the surprising turn of events and what it means for Barcelona moving forward.

The problem is the Barca board.
Xavi won La Liga last season, and he reached the CL Quarter-finals, being a bit unlucky to go out thanks to that silly red-card by Araujo
and finishing 2nd to this Real Madrid team is no bad thing.
    Who else can Barca get?
Xavi needs time and support. He is a young coach and can become really great at Barca.

      @enriqueramirez2554 Месяц назад +1

Im not saying Xavi is the worst coach for the club but he hasn’t been great. Always making excuses when the team performs poorly or even denying they played poorly. Getting suspended multiple times and often making weird substitutions. He has become better on that last one but if he’s staying he needs to become more mature. A manager is supposed to have a cool head and set an example to the players; getting suspended and not taking accountability isn’t a good example to set.
I hope he does well next season but if he doesn’t then it’s best the club moves on to a different coach.

Gundogun was a good pick up. They need to get their debt off the books and continue developing young players, picking up good free transfers for reasonable wages.
It's not over for Barca even if they have to struggle for 2 to 3 seasons.

Xavi was never a 'level headed individual'. I like him as a coach given the cards he is dealt with but his anger on the touchline and his deflection of blame to always outside issues with irritation around need for accountability is straight from him as player. He wasnt as a player an yellow card magnet but his attitude in press conferences is exactly how he was as a player.
There is a reason he is often ridiculed for his old "blaming the grass" comments

@@HarshRaj-ec1dz That's an unusual situation though, especially when the manager talks about the toll that the job has taken on them personally as Xavi did.
Clearly the powers that be at Barca are desperate and cannot envision a future beyond Xavi even when they've had six months to recruit a replacement. I worry for Xavi not really being able to walk away without a feeling of guilt even though he's very clearly suffering from managing Barca.

Injuries aside, disorganisation is the main reason why Barça fell short this season. Barça are a system based team in dysfunction.
Due to players missing via injury or not at Barça, that the system needs to work & playing the ones they do have out of position i.e.:
    ALONSO | LB at LCB
    KOUNDE | RCB at RB
    CUBARSI | RCB at LCB
    CANCELO | RB at LB
    CHRISTENSEN | RCB at DM
    RAPHINHA | RW at LW
    FELIX | AMF/SS/F9 at LW
DM aside, Barça's deficits are predominantly on the left & they must address them with the following signings so the system functions at it's best.
( _Values as per transfermarkt_ )
    *ARRIVALS:*
    GRIMALDO | LB - €45m
    TORRES | LCB - €45m

Considering Barça's financials & La Liga's 1 to 1 rule. Barça must sell to make signings & I'd sell:
( _Values as per transfermarkt_ )
    *DEPARTURES:*
    ALONSO - €3m
    LENGLET - €10m
    CHRISTENSEN - €40m

    GUNDOGAN - €16m
    FATI - €30m
    FERRAN - €35m
    -----------------------------------------------
    (POTENTIAL SALES) €217m + (LEVER) €40m = €257m
    -----------------------------------------------
(p.s. I'd also be willing to sell Lewy &/or Frenkie, preferably the former, if that's what it took to make this squad a reality.)
