I read her book last week and was not impressed or sorry for her. It was all "me, me, me" and the book was 80% her fighting with Anna back and forth through text only that it was the exact same argument with the same few sentences. Terrible. She was living off this girl's "wealth". She kind of had it coming. The book really shows how much Rachel took advantage of this wealth Anna supposedly had in greater detail.

I'm friends with a few multi-millionaires but when we go out, we always go Dutch. We always split the bill. I've never let them pay for me because our friendship is real. Rachel is clearly a despicable user. She may not be as nefarious as Anna Delvey but she's definitely a user.

Agree! Maybe everything Anna spent on Rachel for those years wasn’t too far of the 62k. Rachael happily accepted all the gifts and didn’t decline or offer back to Anna but kept accepting. So I am torn, on one hand Rachel seems like a user/hanger on. Who seem to be quite happy to accept lavish gifts and go along for the ride etc... On the other hand being stranded in Morocco etc... must have been a scary experience and she was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Also, the feeling of being betrayed by a friend etc... is terrible. So I feel sorry for her while also thinking she's not that great of a person either

I don’t think she deserved what happened to her. But she came out of the other side now. In retrospect yes she doesn’t quite deserve any sympathy but at the time before a book deal, before the credit card company forgave the fee, etc. That actually is traumatic.

I’m loving the fact that literally no one is on her side. We all see through her. She was mooching off of Anna and in the end got her karma. Gotta love it.
I actually feel the exact opposite, as I'm disappointed how quick everyone is to judge someone they don't know personally. To say that Rachel was mooching off of Anna and didn't genuinely enjoy her friendship is beyond our scope of knowing. And honestly, relationships are quite nuanced. One person may spend the bulk of the money while the other person may offer a tremendous amount of emotinal support that the other person could never fully reciprocate. Rarely are relationships equal in every aspect. We don't know the dynamics of the friendship because we weren't in it. The one thing we do know is that Anna was a scammer. Everything else is just conjecture and haste judgment. I hope you don't take any offense to what I'm saying. Just offering a different perspective.

Shocked how many are Team Anna and say Rachel is awful. These are women in their early 20s....she was young, naive and impressionable. Not deep. Struggling to make ends meet and Anna comes along and is glamorous and spends the money on her (I think that was her way to keep relationships). Many people - at that stage in life- wouldn't have thought beyond that gratification of being able to have a taste of the life only a small percentage get to enjoy.

I think your way of doing things can be very wise, but it doesn't mean that someone who doesn't operate in the same manner is automatically imprudent or self-serving. I've had a rich friend who paid for things I couldn't buy him at the time. I accepted it because it was something he wanted to do to express his good will toward me. That's what friendship is about. It's not about counting the cost and making sure everything is tit for tat. I'm of the mindset that genuine friendships aren't that precisely transactional in nature.

It would probably cost AmEx more to take her to court, get a judgement, then collect on the judgement. If Rachel doesn't have anything to collect on, or declares bankruptcy, then the effort incurs additional losses without gain or recovery.

I’m going against the grain a bit by pouring scorn on a different target. Going on holiday with Rachel was an extremely sloppy move on Anna’s part, and using her to pay so much was even worse. You don’t need to be a con artist to know that the surest way to get caught is to scam someone who knows you out of an amount that they can’t afford to swallow, because that person is probably the most likely to go to the police. And unlike a bank or law enforcement, they know how to find you. Which is exactly what happened. Anna was smart, but she was also a vainglorious narcissist. She kept Rachel around because she wanted someone to be impressed with her. She wanted the validation she brought. She knew Rachel was too shallow and self-absorbed to ask questions and to hesitate about someone paying for her. And she wanted the free publicity that would come with being friends with a Vanity Fair journalist, particularly when she started her foundation. Her vanity came back to bite her.
I read her book last week and was not impressed or sorry for her. It was all "me, me, me" and the book was 80% her fighting with Anna back and forth through text only that it was the exact same argument with the same few sentences. Terrible. She was living off this girl's "wealth". She kind of had it coming. The book really shows how much Rachel took advantage of this wealth Anna supposedly had in greater detail.

I don’t think she deserved what happened to her. But she came out of the other side now. In retrospect yes she doesn’t quite deserve any sympathy but at the time before a book deal, before the credit card company forgave the fee, etc. That actually is traumatic.

I actually feel the exact opposite, as I'm disappointed how quick everyone is to judge someone they don't know personally. To say that Rachel was mooching off of Anna and didn't genuinely enjoy her friendship is beyond our scope of knowing. And honestly, relationships are quite nuanced. One person may spend the bulk of the money while the other person may offer a tremendous amount of emotinal support that the other person could never fully reciprocate. Rarely are relationships equal in every aspect. We don't know the dynamics of the friendship because we weren't in it. The one thing we do know is that Anna was a scammer. Everything else is just conjecture and haste judgment. I hope you don't take any offense to what I'm saying. Just offering a different perspective.

Anna agreed to pay, then ditched her. Rachel lost her savings and couldn't afford rent. As a therapist, I can truly say Anna meets criteria for Antisocial Personality Disorder (sociopath). Shocked how many are Team Anna and say Rachel is awful. These are women in their early 20s....she was young, naive and impressionable. Not deep. Struggling to make ends meet and Anna comes along and is glamorous and spends the money on her (I think that was her way to keep relationships). Many people - at that stage in life- wouldn't have thought beyond that gratification of being able to have a taste of the life only a small percentage get to enjoy.

I think your way of doing things can be very wise, but it doesn't mean that someone who doesn't operate in the same manner is automatically imprudent or self-serving. I've had a rich friend who paid for things I couldn't buy him at the time. I accepted it because it was something he wanted to do to express his good will toward me. That's what friendship is about. It's not about counting the cost and making sure everything is tit for tat. I'm of the mindset that genuine friendships aren't that precisely transactional in nature.

It would probably cost AmEx more to take her to court, get a judgement, then collect on the judgement. If Rachel doesn't have anything to collect on, or declares bankruptcy, then the effort incurs additional losses without gain or recovery.

Going on holiday with Rachel was an extremely sloppy move on Anna’s part, and using her to pay so much was even worse. You don’t need to be a con artist to know that the surest way to get caught is to scam someone who knows you out of an amount that they can’t afford to swallow, because that person is probably the most likely to go to the police. And unlike a bank or law enforcement, they know how to find you. Which is exactly what happened.
Anna was smart, but she was also a vainglorious narcissist. She kept Rachel around because she wanted someone to be impressed with her. She wanted the validation she brought. She knew Rachel was too shallow and self-absorbed to ask questions and to hesitate about someone paying for her. And she wanted the free publicity that would come with being friends with a Vanity Fair journalist, particularly when she started her foundation. Her vanity came back to bite her.
