  • This video is a philosophical, technical, and critical conversation about the reality of taking images. The world of digital photography is very different than the days of print and slide film. We are no longer capturing final images when we press the shutter button, watch the video to find out what we are actually capturing and the importance of understanding the difference.

    1 day online over a thousand viewers, and I'm the first to comment. I so enjoy your thoughts and candor. I know I can learn a great deal from you and plan a trip to take a course with you. I'm certainly not 100% in agreement with you, but I think thats the point. Going back to the start of this. 1000 views and no comments, you are either so right, or so wrong that nobody had anything to say. I do. I thoroughly enjoy your perspective. Cheers.

      I think what happened, and I don't know why YOuTube Studio does this, I set comments for NO moderation allowing comments to be posted regardless. But when they publish the video, it is set to HOLD! I was in Patagonia in very remote areas when this was made public and couldn't adjust the setting for a bit! That might be why! Thanks for watching AND COMMENTING!

    I’m 65, and this may be the first time I’ve heard “paradigm” in a Texas accent. (Not to sound like a West Coast doofus elitist, but hey, you brought up the accents thing.)
    I haven’t been too conscientious about exposing to the right in my digital photography, falling prey to having the image look good in the viewfinder/screen. I’ll definitely want to work on that, thanks.

    I completely agree with your opinion! I used to think that the data interpreted by the camera as a JPG would already be the best a camera could produce. But it's always disappointing that the camera's automatic data interpretation can't reflect the dynamic range of our eyes anyway.... It's only since I started using RAW data that I've realized more and more that I only have to make sure that I collect enough exposure information at the moment of exposure.... so that I can later develop the image according to my original visual impressions. For me, this understanding has opened up a whole new world of photography...

    As one who used to shoot slide film almost exclusively i recognized right away with the change to digital that there are similarities. Expose for the highlights as opposed to negative film where you exposed for the shadows. You can’t reclaim blown out highlights.

    My head knows what you say is true and my photos have greatly improved since I started exposing my images, as you have said. (The built-in GND is the coolest thing since sliced bread.) My heart finds the idea of being a computer operator rather than a photographer to be rather unromantic. 🤠The RESULTS usually get my heart to shut up and roll with the process, and it is warming to the idea to let film and those experiences live in the past.
    I shot an event this weekend and the GND came in really handy. The powerpoint on the screen and the forum panel were all properly exposed. That has never happened for me before. Usually, the powerpoint is blown out, or I have to use flash. The OM 1 ii is a truly remarkable camera. I like the results, particularly the color, better than any full-frame camera I have ever used.
    I do have a suggestion for OM Systems: Can we please move the histogram back where it is on the EM1 X, over the exposure meter? Too often, it is blocking part of my composition where it is now. Better yet, since we are capturing data, give me an option to see a histogram of the color channels in place of the exposure meter. I am using the exposure meter less anyway. Highlight alerts and histogram seems to get it done.

      You know, I prefer the histogram down low as well! Thanks for watching!

    It is a little bit of a challenge to change how you think about the picture you are taking. Here is what I do sometimes. I take the picture with the highlight alarm just one stop from blown out highlights. Then I take a second shot with what my eye thinks is a good looking picture. When I develop the RAW files I can compare the results of the pictures. That is what helped me not to trust my eye but the histogram and highlights and shadows warnings. Thanks Lee, we really do need to rethink or change our thinking.

    • @leehoyphotography
      @leehoyphotography  4 месяца назад +1

      @@leehoyphotography I'm watching your video the making of an image right now. I should have said I take the picture with one click under the highlight alarm. My clicks are set to ⅓ of an f stop. I'm just practicing and learning how to take better pictures.

    I agree.. However, (there is always a but) I think you should stress this is one, part as the photographer has to see the picture in the field and envision what it might look like in the end and then focus on the concept you shared here. A short one or two sentence stress as just doing what you say here will not guarantee a good photo. My humble thought. Very informative and thoughtful video.

    Hi, Lee, great thoughts on all this. I am always aware of ETTR, but struggle sometimes on the over/under exposure indicator. When I get the red to disappear, the blue comes back. I guess you have to make a decision, like said on what the subject dictates.
    Maybe, another video on examples of how you work both indicators (Histogram and Highlight-Shadow) would be great to do. I find it tough controlling both indicators a challenge for me to get the exposure great. Thanks again for your talk on the subject. Roger

    Great one again,Lee! I wonder if you can do an in depth video about sorting out photos when you are shooting in f.e SH2 50fps. Last time I did that I got a headache going through all these photos. I have heard about Photo Mecanic. Would be nice to see how you handle this the fastest way. Maybe a nice topic for a future video.. take care and all the good from The Netherlands,Ron😀😀👍

    Hi Lee, thanks for the video. I’m always nervous exposing to the right. At times I go a bit too far but the bird has flown before I can crank it back. Is it better to start low and work up rather than work back?

    • @leehoyphotography
      @leehoyphotography  4 месяца назад +1

      I usually meter off something of similar tones in anticipation of a bird so that I’m usually within a 1/3 to 2/3’s to start. Try that and yes, we don’t want blown highlights for sure!

    Hi, just watched your video on DXO PureRaw 4 and would ask if you found or find a great difference between ver 3 and 4 especially when it comes to feather detail? No this is a completely different video here but find many people who provide videos tend to let older ones slip down the ladder and don't reply, not saying you would but felt have a better chance on recent videos. Many Thanks. Russ.

      This is one of the most ridiculous comments so far on my channel. Maybe, what you MIGHT learn someday, is those of you so fixated on pixels, reveal a tremendous lack of skill technically, creatively, and fieldcraft. When you need more pixels, it belies a reliance on elements that really don't matter. Try learning instead of posting dumbass comments. Or, maybe a RUclips channel on mediocre photographers who love pixels so they can crop their images a ton because they spent way to much money on a medium telephoto lens and they don't have the skills to get near wildlife for great images. ;)

      Lee just for the record I own Olympus cameras and Lens one being the 150 to 400 mm. It’s not me that’s fixated on megapixels it’s you trying to justify the low pixel count. Your type of photography eliminates the need for a high pixel Count most of your images could’ve been taking with a point and shoot. That’s the type of photography you enjoy and good luck to you but it’s not for everybody. These cameras are capable of taking well detailed shots you never emphasise this on your videos. It’s always Lee’s way or the highway.
