    I've had those contax lenses before. They're amazing! I now have a Tamron 45mm f1.8 VC and man, if you are into manual focus, this lens looks exactly like the contax line. Extremely sharp at 1.8 with soapy bokeh. Nice camera by the way, I'm tossed between the xh1 and the gh5.

  • @DessieTots
    @DessieTots Год назад +1

    But how easy/difficult is the manual focusing? The nicest lenses out there still won’t be much use if it’s a struggle to focus accurately.

    Today I thought about my Contax RTS II I had in the 80's. I had the 85mm plus a couple other primes. The contrast was so high I decided to go to Nikon. (Hey, if those National Geographic guys are using it) I now shoot (when my low back allows) Fuji X. What are you using to adapt the 85 1.4 to the small X bodies? Thanks.

    • @JoeDAgostinoPhoto
      @JoeDAgostinoPhoto  6 лет назад +1

      Tony DiCasa definitely not. Most 50mm lenses for 35mm full frame will exhibit vignette however some will be softer then others and correct easier. The 85mm Zeiss and Canon cover just fine with very little vignette which is easily corrected.

  • @mougabo
    @mougabo 5 лет назад +1

    hey, super lovely images!!! i got a question that might be "stupid" but here i go: I thought that whenever you adapt a lens that is designed for a smaller sensor (in this case this lens is designed for a full frame) to a larger sensor (in this case a medium format sensor) you would get heavy vigneting or the image will look inside of a circle or something weird like that. How is it that you don´t get that?

    • @JoeDAgostinoPhoto
      @JoeDAgostinoPhoto  5 лет назад

      Some lenses vignette more than others especially when dealing with a sensor size difference. I've found that when adapting glass to the GFX system Canon, Minolta and CY Zeiss have given favorable results. With that said I main stay around shorter telephoto lengths.

    • @expatriatechronicles6915
      @expatriatechronicles6915 5 лет назад

      Well, the GFX has a sensor of approx 43x33mm. A full frame is 24x36mm. The actual image projected by a lens is obviously circular, so the full frame lens must cover at least 36x36mm. This leaves maximum 7mm unexposed at the long end of the medium format sensor. I am thinking one could shoot in a square format, using 33x33mm of the sensor, and in that case all full frame lenses should work without vignetting.

    • @chirag4
      @chirag4 4 года назад +1

      @@expatriatechronicles6915 diagonal of full frame sensor is 43mm ... & that of GFX is 55mm .... so there's 12mm difference. Furthermore, 3:2 Fx sensor is wider than 4:3 GFX.
      If there was a 4:3 aspect-ratio sensor in full frame body, it would be 5-6% bigger area-wise, so the coverage or image-area would be around 5-6% more, ... you could include that much more View/Scene in the shot. Ideally, a square sensor would be 11% larger compared to 3:2 sensor, which is even better than 4:3 .... a square sensor in Fx format would be 31x31mm

    Joe thanks for the vid, i'm just curious to know what advantages the Zeiss Contax 85mm offer over the standard Fujifilm 63mm?
    Does the benefit stretches beyond just the F1.4 (as compared to the F2.8)?
    I'm thinking of expanding my lens options.

    • @JoeDAgostinoPhoto
      @JoeDAgostinoPhoto  6 лет назад +3

      Kester Wong I would say it depends on what is considered advantages. There’s going to be a give and take with any lens choice. I have the 63mm. Great lens that I hardly use! For my taste it doesn’t separate the subject as much as I would like. The isolation on the 85mm is amazing. However the 63mm being a native lens probably resolves better and also offers AF. The Zeiss is manual focus and for my needs “sharp enough”. It offers a better separation and looks like more of a 6x7 negative compared to a cropped 645 image.

    • @kestertroy
      @kestertroy 6 лет назад

      I would like to know if getting the Zeiss Contax setup would cost even higher than the price of the native lens. Could you list some links or details of the accessories under your description?
      I thought the native F2.8 gives more than enough of bokeh, to a point where the background is almost blurred into oblivion. Perhaps you want to see a more crisper separation between the focused object and the background?
      With regards to the manual focus, in your experience, how do the native manual mode compare to the Zeiss manual focus? Although an AF, sometimes the 63mm lens struggles to focus small and up-close items, e.g. leaves, or a hanging worm up close (within the proper range of course, green not red).
      Thanks for reading Joe.

    • @JoeDAgostinoPhoto
      @JoeDAgostinoPhoto  6 лет назад +4

      Kester Wong I don’t think it would be close in price. The Fuji 63mm is in sale for $1,250.00 USD. You can find Contax Zeiss 85mm for as low as $450 plus the cost of a simple adapter (C/Y to GFX) $45.00 you coming in well under 63mm territory.

    • @kestertroy
      @kestertroy 6 лет назад +1

      Awesome, wish I had seen this vid before plunging on the 63mm. Would you have any recommendations for the alternatives to macro lenses? I have been considering the Fujifilm macro extension tubes MCEX-18G WR or MCEX-45G WR. If there exists a better value proposition at comparable level of outcome, then I might not have to resort to the extension tubes.

    • @JoeDAgostinoPhoto
      @JoeDAgostinoPhoto  6 лет назад +1

      Kester Wong the 63mm is a great lens. Don’t have any regrets owning it. For macro shots I’ve been using the Mamiya 120mm f/4 Macro. It’s a Mamiya 645 lens but works fantastic on the GFX. Again you will need an adapter.
