WWE managed to capture lightning in a bottle during WrestleMania 35 season, Kofi Kingston was suddenly rocketing to the top of the card and bound for a collision with WWE Champion Daniel Bryan at the showcase of the immortals. But how did the New Day member get there, what caused KofiMania and why is it an important milestone in WWE's history? Here's Laurie to explain…

LAURIE: What did you think of the KofiMania storyline? Which other WWE veterans would you love to see get a WWE Championship opportunity?
It’s giving kofi his big moment .Even though he will not get another shot at the title , him being crowned was special.
Also John Morrison
John Morrison
Bobby lashley
Big E
Cesaro
Cesaro
It’s not Wwe but I would love to see Christopher Daniels get a shot at the TNT or world title in AEW
He really does deserve it
Cody trying not to laugh when Hunter asked about the Jamaican accent will always be hilarious to watch
Same place that Hunter Hearst Helmsley went to when he became HHH.
Cody corpsing? Send for the man!
Kofi should've responded to Triple H saying, "aren't you supposed to be British?"
Being a Hispanic fan of WWE for decades, seeing Kofi win made me cry because it gave me hope that main roster WWE will treat their minorities better and give them more complex storylines. I love this video, Laurie. Thanks for it.
DBry is a big help to the New Day backstage. He willingly dropped the belt to Kofi and is the reason why Big E is currently getting that singles push.
Vince is the man behind BiG E thing. Also Daniel doesn't have that level of creative influence that he can break up New Day.
When it comes to Kofi's reign I have to put this quote: "Don't cry because it's over, be happy because it happened."
That moment in the gauntlet where he pushed Aj Styles and screamed, " Man ring the bell, it's been 11 years!!!" OMGOODNESS!!!🙌
Goosebumps!
It still makes me think how this entire thing might never have happened had Ali not been injured
Similarly, hopefully but more on the way WWE portrayed middle Easterners
But if it didn't happen. We may have avoided retribution
@@agaming2k293 don’t forget the Smackdown hacker
I bet Ali wishes he'd still been injured when Vince thought up Retribution.
@@Xehanort10 I hope they release him for his sake cos this gimmick is absolutely ballsack
When KofiMania started rolling, I am one of the many fans who genuinely rooted for Kofi to winning the WWE Title off of Daniel Bryan and marked out when he did. It's just sad that he got squashed like that by Lesnar. I already accepted that Brock would win the title from Kofi but not in the way it happened.
It was so bad watching here in Australia because after smackdown there was just 5 mins of dead air. It was so frustrating.
It's not really a shock it's realistic that Brock would kill Kofi.
@@ChristopherJames1993 I've never seen the F5 in UFC. That doesn't seem very realistic, dude just hanging out on another guys shoulder not struggling. People only claim realism in wrestling when there's a size different.
@@eldricksimmons1778 He said its realistic that Brock would kill Kofi, not that *the way* he won was realistic
Whats your point?
@@BadDayLp That I get annoyed when people claim realism in wrestling, ignoring everything else. We wanted a match similar to Daniel Bryan vs Brock.
Realistic or not, this is wrestling we want good story.
The video of Shad, MVP and JTG from their WrestleMania public viewing showed in the best way, what KofiMania really meant.
I was thinking about that and then I got sad. RIP Shad
I watched that on repeat and almost cried even back then, haven't watched it since Shad passed.
I was at Wrestlemania when Kofi won. As a black man I had tears in my eye. It’s rare to see us in that big of a moment
Man and look how fast they took it away from him wish he got a good title run like everybody else
Kofi losing like that buried every single guy who put him over during his reign
i agree, it was like Mcmahon was saying this is what i think of your Kofimania, i always knew he was going to lose to Brock, but if he had battled and pushed Brock to the edge of defeat before bowing it out, that i could have lived with but to get SQUASHED inside 7 sec, was a slap in the face to everyone who jumped on board the Kofimania train, they had moved to fox and didn,t think Kofi could draw, wonder how that turned out,,lol, BROCK isn,t even with the company any more AND smackdown ratings are at best PUTRID,then came the pandemic, it,s funny how Karma works sometimes, not saying the pandemic was punishment, but the timing of it sure makes u wonder
WM30 - YES Movement
WM35 - KOFIMania
WM40 - something CESARO related hopefully 😭
These are so great!
I hope one day we get a 3 faces of Foley or the Icon Sting Explained videos :)
LAURIE: I think Sting may have just bumped himself up the list tbh...
@@partsFUNknown epic!
"Ja-faken"... I'M DEAD! Love you Laurie! 🤣🤣🤣
Usos used that joke first in the legendary rap battle
@@Letsdoitgood not a secret, it was used before WWE 🤣 Just funny
Kofi’s fight to the top was so good, I legitimately teared up every now and again through the journey. That Elimination Chamber ending, The USO’s forfeiting, New Day confronting Vince, awesome stuff.
*I hated how he lost the title in 7 freaking seconds to Brock Lesnar, that's just typical WWE booking right there.*
Is like Luke and Oli said on the Summerslam 2010 review on Patreon that in WWE if you are never booked as a top guy or it looks like you are being groomed for the main event you will never be a main event guy and it was clear Vince doesn't see Kofi as a main event star and that's why even as WWE champ he never headlined a show and he was the 3rd most important thing on SD over Roman run over storyline and Owens vs Shane.
You know that was my biggest issue with how it all ended and how WWE runs it's characters...
1. It's not even the story (normally it is though), it's the fashion.
2. It always leaves a bitter taste in the mouth
@@michaelrivera8360 And that's why CM Punk's pipebomb gets more accurate by the day.
@@michaelrivera8360 Luke says it all the time, if you're not in the main event straight away you ain't getting there.
Seeing Kofi win was amazing especially as a kid wanting to see someone like Kofi (a mid-carder with a set ceiling) breakthrough that ceiling
When I got into wrestling. Kofi was my favorite. I gave up on him winning the WWE Championship years ago. I drifted away from wrestling in 2019. And somewhere along the way, I heard rumblings of Kofimania. I came back just after Elimination Chamber and watched Kofi Kingston, my childhood favorite, go on his journey to becoming the God damn WWE Champion. And to be honest, it still doesn't feel real. It never felt real. It felt like I was in a dream. A wonderful, euphoric, satisfying dream. Bless Kofimania.
I was 29 when Kofi won the belt and the 1st time I felt WWE wanted to do something for me. I’m super grateful to have that imagery in my head. The grind feels that much more worth it.
Great content Laurie!
I was lucky enough to be at the show where Kofimani began! The energy in that place was NUTS. After each opponent we were all like "Okay, he aint getting passed them" and he did it in a matter of minutes. Great part of history that night was.
This is an A-grade video. Really great work.
I also feel like, from a purely storytelling perspective, Kofi's win and reign are the perfect emblems of a wider, chronic issue in the WWE writer's room - an almost stubborn refusal to plan anything long term. It's a tough game, cause you have to factor in expecting the unexpected (injuries, suspensions, et al), but so often I feel like WWE don't have an answer for the question "What's Next?" Which is why so many epic title wins are followed by "And it never quite caught fire." See also: Becky Lynch post WM35, Drew McIntyre post WM36.
It's almost like a sugar rush - we get given the dopamine hit of his win, but then there's nothing planned to sustain the energy going forward and solidify the title win by backing it up with the reign itself.
LB: Thanks mate! I agree ,WWE suffer from systemic short-sightedness which is likely a symptom of Vince chucking out scripts or losing interest in people one week into their run. I know I would stop planning ahead if that happened to me.
I see where your coming from. Kofi's reign started off excellent, then it slowly dwindled with that long feud with Dolph Ziggler
The Booker T story is one of the most important to black wrestlers fans. It reflects what we actually experience being told we can’t in certain industries. So see MVP and Shad cry was really how some of us felt in that moment. I remember jazz had a heel character that was proud of being black and she would talk about black culture and be booed like crazy. Imagine the writers saying hey love being black they should boo you at of the house for that same with the nation of domination
Had to stop at the 10:25 mark to just say this is an incredibly well-written Docu-Bio. Good shit PFK.
Before Kofimania I consider him to be the most underrated in wwe today
Even including Kofi-Mania, I consider Kingston to be the most underrated talent in WWE today.
Such a great storyline. Too bad fans turned on him halfway through his title reign. Yeah sure it had minor issues, but I draw the line when people say it was worse than Jinder Mahal's title reign.
Love these, man, and they'll hold up over time. Thanks for the work and content.
These videos are incredible laurie! Very good cinematic quality
Great video, much appreciated that you guys covered this ✊🏽
Man, can you imagine Keith Lee being stuck with a dancing gimmick? I'm sure he'd be amazing at it, but it 100% sounds like something that would have happened in WWE even 2-3 years ago.
I was there for Wrestlemania 35 and Kofi winning the title was the biggest pop I've ever been a part of!
Well done Laurie, this was very interesting and enlightening. I love these videos, I'm so glad they're going to be a regular thing.
Stay safe xx
LB: Thanks Lindsey - I've got a few good ones lined up so here's to 2021!
WWE also missed a subtle step when Orton became Champion, they could've had a small fued with Kofi and him
If any other channel posted a video with that titled, I would have kept scrolling because I'd have heard it all before, but i knew y'all would have something special!
This was a great presentation. Good way to do the comic book storyline and the back story.
Thank you for this video and letting SP3, Malcolm, and Pete express the way they felt towards this! Representation in wrestling doesn’t get talked about enough but it is a VERY important topic we as wrestling fans need to talk about more.
Been waiting for this and never knew it until just now
Explained is fantastically in depth. Love it 😀
Nicely done 👌🏾
The production values on these videos are incredible
This was beautifully done.
What people forgot is that Jey and Jimmy were both in WWE representing their family before Roman was, but they were never given the mantle or considered to be "The Heads of the Table" or "The Tribal Chiefs". It feels like they were both passed over for Roman, which Jey implied many times.
until kofi gets his runback, this entire run is tainted
Very well done guys!
Great video guys
The way I’ll always say it is this.
WWE were like
We have no plans for Daniel Bryan at Wrestlemania
And the fans were all like
Okay
How about that guy
Nah, WWE and Daniel Bryan both had plans. WWE wanted Owens vs Bryan, while Bryan himself wanted to face Mustafa Ali
I never knew that there's a RUclips channel that explains wrestling fueds, thank you!
I'm happy for you Hesth Slater that you finally got a real job!
Great video!!!
This vid made me want to go and rewatch those Gauntlet/Elimination Chamber matches.
They're so bloody amazing.
LB: I enjoyed re-watching the run to make this! Still felt the emotion at Mania!
I was 14 when i watched Ron Simmons defeat Vader for the WCW Heavyweight Championship in 1992.
That moment was seared into my brain as one of the most incredible things i had ever seen. My friend and i had been watching wrestling for about 3 years at that point and Ron was one of our faves. That moment of JR saying "He caught him with the Powerslam" and the 3 count and the crowd erupting was so powerful.
Rarely has a championship win ever truly moved me, in the 28 years since that day.
KofiMania as a whole entity, was some of the best long term story telling, albeit inadvertently.
When the Uso's forfeited their match in the Tag Gauntlet against Woods & E, I was left speechless. That moment alone, showed what it meant to a lot of them that Kofi deserved that opportunity. And kudos to Daniel also for wanting to work with Kofi, bringing his own mania story full circle, as Laurie mentioned.
Great video and thanks to all those who shared their thoughts with you...
Laurie you are a phenomenal person and I love your perspective thank you and wish the best for you
The Fiend videos got me hooked on this channel 👌🏼💯
It was on one of the shows I watched on the network. It was great moment. Especially for Kofi.
I loved Kofi growing up. Wether it be his Collie Buddz theme song, his very fun energetic in ring, & even after dropping the accent i loved Kofi. As i grew up from a middle schooler to high schooler i slowly drifted away from wrestling and missed Kofi Mania but got see him got squashed by Brock as i started watching again.
New Day will be remembered in wrestling history as one if not the best 3 man team in history. Especially when WWE has almost finally deleted their Tag-Team division today.
P.S.
*Everything will be Fakidor.*
New Day have done everything in WWE, they should all go to AEW. They will have plenty of trios to feud with. Just dreaming.
I wouldn't go that far
They’re firmly in the top 5, the only better teams that come to mind are the original NWO, Freebirds, and The Shield
Kofi has been my fave since day one! I was so excited when he won the title!
Despite the ending, that moment was one of those truly special moments in wrestling history. As a fan, it's the same feeling I had watching Cena vs Punk at Money in the Bank or seeing Taker vs Kane at Mania 14. Kofi had his moment and no matter what, that moment can never be taken away. The build to it was beautiful and reminded me why I became a fan in the first place.
This is by far the BEST partsfunknown episode because it hits home for an african american like me. I honestly think or thought Vince was racist and didn't see high level potential in people of color just like most jobs only see black people as retail or customer service workers and try to keep them in that area because that's how it's portrayed. Kofimania was like a huge movement that in my opinion was BIGGER than Daniel Bryan's and don't get me wrong I love Bryan but this was had more impact, it was one man fighting for a dream for 11 god damn years and fighting for every african american showing the white people that we can also be where you are. So when Kofi got the three count it was instant tears for me. Hell I saw a video of MVP and Shad crying at it too. It affected so many people and I loved it. Sadly as I figured he'd lose to the white man who clearly is more bigger and a money maker and got squashed like "here is your 156 seconds of fame now back to the trash with you!" TBH I stopped watching WWE after Kofi's loss because it furthers my thoughts about Vince just giving people what they want and hoping they would shut up. I'm tired of seeing people like Cedric Alexander who KILLED IT with Kota Ibushi be squashed, guys like Richochet who was amazing in the indies and in NXT get treated like food to people like Brock Lesnar and it sad that money is the only reason why they keep taking these beatings and making themselves look like trash. Hell Shinsuke Nakamura who was the star of NXT and NJPW is now being treated like a mediocre midcarder and it makes me sick. People of color don't get the same treatment as they should and I hate WWE for it.
I remember being at that SmackDown with the gauntlet match. It was unreal.
Kofi is my all time favorite wrestler and the reason I started watching to begin with. Over 10 years of watching him and I never thought I’d see him hold a world title. I nearly cried when he won it at Mania
Kofimania was amazing especially for his fans since day 1 like me. Genuinenly hope it happens again
Great video wish Adam would do a how wwe should’ve booked kofi Kingston’s wwe title run
Explained is one of my favorite series on this channel, along with Good Actually
3rd message and I don't give a "s----", love love LOVE this explained. I started to forget Kofimania.
Makes Brock Lesnar winning even more of a spit in the face. 👀
Kofi’s title run is getting the Benoit treatment.
Malcom talking about the Kofi poster
It’s almost reminding me of the Jessie Owens Poster
This one was really good so much detail
I never loved a tag team more than the moment the Usos came in and forfeited because of respect to the New Day
For the people like myswlf who stopped watching WWE or wrestling in general by the time the 2010s came around but saw Kofi in the early years it was a fantastic throwback
That win still makes me cry when I watch it
I dont watch for 6 years and I miss Kofimania
man im already depressed, i didnt need a reminder of this as well
KofiMania is the single greatest story in WWE, the first Smackdown on Fox not withstanding. From January to October, Kofi was the best WWE Superstar. After Mania, he lost ONE match and it was a 6 man tag to set up his next Challenger. It was organic. the vast majority of the WWE Universe was behind it, and WWE did their best writing and portraying to make it great.
The best part about Kofi as champ was him. Winning... After that, it was all downhill. They could have done great things! So many good storylines, so many good vibes, so many good moments. But apparently wwe can't even plan for beyond their own nose and wasted the whole momentum.
I hopped on the Kofi kart as soon as he got his 3rd win on the exhibition gauntlet towards the chamber
The worst thing about Kofimania was that they never gave kofi a chance to use his own music/ring gear. It was like he was first and foremost a New Day member who just happened to be the champion
Almost 2 years later and I can report that the golden girls gear is a thing!!! It happened! Dreams do come true.
This match... I can't remember a WWE match that hit me with real feelings as much as this did.
I cry every time I rewatch that match
The thing I love is that when Bobby Lashley won the WWE title there wasn’t much of an emphasis on its historical value because a black person holding the WWE title feels normal now. And that’s how it should be.
Kofi's Wrestlemania title win is one of the only things in wrestling that I will ALWAYS cry at no matter what.
Kofimainia was different because he was never looked at as a main event player and was put into it through working hard rather than just being there
Well he was till Randy didn’t want him to be
good video
You need more views
Greatly Told Laurie
LB: Thanks!
If you look at it, the story if Lofi Kingston is very ironic.
Randy Orton was the one who halted Kofi's push the first time and Ali was injured in a match against Orton so.... In a way Orton started Kofimania.....
Man, this is gonna be a sad watch.
I find this video very cheerful. It explains the various facetts that made Kofimania so successful and so engaging for everybody. It focused on what made us all feel warm and fuzzy in our tum tums (by favorite Simon Miller quote), and very litte on how it ended and which frustrations come with a 7-second loss.
I revives the pure joy that came along with it. But doesnt end with "Kofi got squashed and very thing nice was runied". Because in this run there is so much to enjoy. Even if it ended abrupt and prematurely
Kofimania was both cool and sad. Cool because kofi got a chance, but sad that he needed a chance in the first place. The wwe has been horrible the last decade of building up stars and rewarding hard work. Cesaro 😭🤦🤦
Now bobby is wwe champion i love seeing stuff like this
I've been a long time fan of Kofi and to see him win the big one was great to see not only because he deserved it after 11 years of just sheer dedication and hard work, but also resonated with me mainly because he is the first African born WWE Champion and as someone from an African country (South Africa), it made it that much more special. But that's my two cents.
0:22- "firmly graps it" +_+
Laurie is incredible at his job
He didn’t really break through the glass ceiling it was more that he pushed through it only to get pushed back down. You can try all you want and you may get a shot but after that we’ll put you back in your place and be sure to stay there. That’s the message that Vince is saying.
Sheamus, Kofi, CM Punk ECW on Sci-fi sorta redeemed itself......eventually
Great job Laurie! Fakador rules! He is everywhere! Mr. Davis is going down!
ive missed you on the main channel Laurie
I personally loved the storyline in a such a deep profound way as I as a black guy who sees us winning said championship or trophy for the first time is a blessing or neither a curse, cause the road that it takes is a hard working one or a crushing one. I say it can be both to blend it together and having a grand time doing so.
edit: I also think Cesaro or Big E can be top guys to be a WWE Champion in the future.
The reason the 7 second loss was so bad was every other opponent Lesnar face had offense. Daniel Bryan, Finn Balor are both around Kofi size and style but they actually had a match that made them seem like credible threats at moments. Kofi's squash just felt like a petty swipe
Kofi was my favorite even as a child in the 2000s. Hs acrobatics and athleticism was so entertaining for kid-me, I remember going on one of the 2008 or so WWE games and giving him all the belts. It made me sad to know that they probably weren't gonna let him win the Royal Rumble, much less the belt.
So when he actually started gaining steam as a challenger for the title, both I and my 8 year old self were ecstatic.
The fact that he got squashed, forgot about the title, and didn't win the Rumble (despite being consistently the most entertaining person in the Rumble every year imo) was really deflating, but for a few months, I was smitten by WWE booking. That doesn't happen a lot.
EDIT: I originally wrote that Kofi was wrestling on WWE in the "early 2000s", which was wrong due to my early childhood memories blending together. Fixed it.
Kofi wasn't about till 2008 so where you getting "early 2000s" from.
@@ChristopherJames1993
I just remember being a kid, I don't remember what years it was.
Though, while I was writing the comment, I was pretty sure I was thinking of 2008 because of the game. Again, kid years, it all kinda blended together lol
All of this to be buried and the title run never to be mentioned again
Man that opening could also be used for Zach ryder
It really hurt his character when he just was complacent with losing the title. His character was about determination, that drive that pushes him forward. Yet, after an embarrassing match against Lesnar he just... never talks about the title again...? Awful booking...
