    I upgraded from a GH5 to a GH6 (I still have my GH5) and from my tests I am very impressed with the GH6. The colors look better and skin tones don't have the reddish tint the GH5 had. The detail in 4K also better. The continuous AF in video my tests has improved a lot, especially with single point focus. I use Olympus lenses and I didn't see any pulsing in the background and 99% of the time it kept the subject in focus, except twice in my tests when it didn't focus on the subject until I pressed the AF button and it stayed focused after that, even in low light. I don't use AF in video most of the time so it doesn't bother me.
    One thing that slightly concerned me initially was the potential fan noise in video as it can't be switched off, only set to slow in all modes except 5.7 and 5.8K which medium is the lowest setting's I use a Sennheiser ME66 microphone to capture background audio and its very sensitive but by pointing it slightly upwards, I haven't heard the fan on the audio recordings I made when I was shooting in 4K.
    I tried the ProRes 5.7K and compared it to Long GOP and what I noticed was that not only did ProRes take up a lot more space (I think it was between 10-20 minutes filled up a 128GB card depending if you are using 422 or 422 HQ) but it seemed to have more contrast and the colors were ever so slightly different compared to Long GOP, but not by much.
    I use my GH6 with dynamic range boost ON all the time for video (except if I am using framerates that don't work with it on) and I really like the extra dynamic range and shooting V-Log a ISO 2000. I use two varibale NDs when shooting video, NiSi 1.5-5 and 5-9 as you defiantly need to use NDs with dynamic range boost ON. I use variable NDs over fixed NDs so I can dial in my exposure to how I want it.
    I rarely had to go over ISO 2000 except in low light and when properly exposed, the noise in the shadows seemed comparable to the GH5 at ISO 400 when using V-Log L sometimes, maybe a bit better in brighter light or normal daylight conditions. After doing noise reduction in editing, the video quality looks great and a definite step up over the GH5.

      Have you noticed that your PC had an easier time with ProRes as opposed to LongGop?

    • @DynamixWarePro
      @DynamixWarePro 2 года назад

      @@michaelkupfer3723 I haven't really tried it except once. I found my PC was a bit slow to edit the 5.7K videos either ProRes or H.265. I just upgraded to a faster PC recently. I mainly shoot 4K All-I on my GH6 and for some reason I haven't been able to get answers to, in the latest GH6 firmware 2.0, they added ProRes and RAW output for every resolution except UHD.
      However, when I edited a 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 All-I video in Premiere Pro and exported it as a ProRes file and imported the ProRes file, it did play back a little smoother.

    It can be hard to tell the difference between the 400 Mbps and the 150 Mbps 4k modes. But if you look closely and you really pixel peep, you'll see that 400 Mbps has a floating airplane that the 150 Mbps mode is simply too low-res to display

      At 150Mbps the camera can use the quantum processor to computationally remove the airplane in realtime. This is a little known feature called selective subject enhancement and uses advanced temporal manipulation combined with machine learning. It isn't in the manual, but if you check the byte code of the firmware it is clearly referenced.

    I like the concision/brevity of the video, but it might have come at too high a cost in terms of the actual information available and comparisons made between the various settings/modes. To start, I found the stabilization comparisons puzzling. Having the completely un-stabilized control is nice, but it's not exactly realistic (who would be interested in the hand-held performance without any IBIS -- we all know it will look bad); meanwhile, not having a baseline IBIS-only (i.e. no e-stabilization and no lens-based OIS, just in-camera IBIS) makes little sense to me, as Panasonic makes two un-stabilized F1.7 zooms that plenty of people will use with IBIS-only if/when they don't want to incur the minor crop associated with the electronic stabilization. Similarly, why not have a clip with all forms of stabilization enabled (electronic, OIS, and IBIS)?
    Likewise, why show the log output graded only with the Panasonic LUT? I think it's useful to show that as a baseline of sorts, but the whole point of the DR boost option is the wider latitude, and after "grading" with the Panasonic LUT, the two clips look nigh-on identical (and also a bit under-exposed, but maybe that's just me). Showing both clips manually adjusted and pushed to the limit of clipping at either end would seem a better test/comparison when trying to determine if that features is actually worthwhile.

    The GH5 really disappointed me when shooting video of moving subjects like birds flying or planes landing. As soon is a have to follow/pan the subject, even very slow following, a lot of jitter and judder occurs in the recordings. For me, as a wildlife videographer, it made the GH5 practically completely unusable. Do you know if this serious jitter problem is solved on the GH6? Did you do a jitter test?

    Does the GH6 finally have native ISO 100? Or is it extended ISO 100 like on the GH5?

    • @JeremyHalterman
      @JeremyHalterman 2 года назад +2

      Assuming you’re shooting in a regular picture profile, ISO 100 is truly native with ISO 50 as an extended option. In V-Log, native ISO is now 250 rather than 400.

    • @DynamixWarePro
      @DynamixWarePro 2 года назад +1

      In photo modes there isn't an native ISO according to Sean on one of the Lumix Live streams as he said the dynamic range boost feature is automatic and can't be set to ON or OFF like it is for video. I don't quite know how it works but sometimes when shooting photos in Natural profile, the lowest ISO I got the best dynamic range was at ISO 800 and a couple of times it worked better at ISO 500 and its not the same as the GH5/GH5 II or G9 which from my tests seem better suited for photography than the GH6 despite the better colors on the GH6. Seems to me in my tests it may depend on the lighting in the area you are shooting in that can effect when the dynamic range boost is on or off but I have no idea as Panasonic won't say.
      For video the native ISO for V-Log is 250 when dynamic range boost is off and 2000 when on. (ISO wen on is 800 for other picture profiles) That may seem high but I always leave it on for best dynamic range as I have noticed when properly exposed the shadow noise is comparable to the GH5 with V-Log L ISO 400 (or slightly better in some cases) and after applying noise reduction in editing the footage is quite impressive and better with more detail than on the GH5 when shooting 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 ALL-I. When dynamic range boost is on, you have to use an ND filter. I use two NiSi variable NDs a 1.5-5 and a 5-9 stop and they work great with no X when fully stopped down.
