Ever since the World Wrestling Federation began giving out signed deals, there has been debate over the term "independent contractor" and what the company should actually have exclusivity over.
Jesse Ventura got an offer to star in a video game which was set to be released on Sega Genesis. Vince McMahon told Jesse he couldn't do it causing Ventura to quit the WWF.
Jesse argues that he should be able to take any deals and wrestle anywhere since he is an "independent contractor". Vince felt differently however and the rest is history.

The fact that Vince tried to threaten him with his job and when that didnt work he tried to intimidate him physically and Jesse laugued at him. No power over him at all

Love Jesse! He knows how the business works & I feel was a legitimate threat to Vince McMahon & how he operated business! Vince does not like anyone who's name he does not own. That's where Jesse stuck it to him. One of the greatest broadcast journalists you'll ever find!
Not only that, he managed to ensure that he now gets royalties any time his voice or likeness are used, which next to no one in WWE gets. That’s why his voice is always dubbed over as much as possible when matches he called are rereleased.
@ThunderFist1978 yes he spoke about that. Saying that is why Vince does not bring him on at Wrestlemania because any time he does, he has to pay him extra money due to a Claus Jesse had with the company.
Just look at what john cena said when he spoke on this. Vince owns the copy rights to his name. Johns government name is john cena so if he leaves wwe he literally cant even use his own gov name. Cena joked about it saying atleast if he leaves he can change his name and make his own name but you could tell he was bothered. To anyone who hasnt seen that go look it up on youtube.

If people came out more about Vince Prison wouldn't be his only Problem all the Money and Benefits he neglected to pay for decades would come out of his Billions and all the ideas he stole from competitors not to mention the drug violations.

So I told Vince I’m done and packed up and went to the Baja for some fish tacos (shakes head violently)
Chris Kyle tried to come down after had started the Fish Taco stand but I told him no way bucko. Had my 1,000 wild dogs run him off of the Baja to the continental United States. I was there.

UFC does the same thing. They treat you like an independent contractor but you can't do anything outside of the organization. I mean there's a ton of other stuff I can list that they won't let you do, what they keep, what they don't give you, and what your allowed to have. Randy Couture testified in front of Congress on how UFC is a strict fight game monopoly and its even got worse considering UFC's Reebok deal which forced fighters to not be able to sell what little space they did have on their shorts for sponsors. Fighters used to rake in a little bit of extra cash from selling space on their shorts but UFC was like "my organization my rules" so now its just Redbox trash with a little UFC logo. So sad....

That's how a lot of trucking companies say their employees are independent contractors I actually beat a couple companies with the labor commission the key thing is if you're an independent contractor you set your own time when you going to start when a company tells you what your start time you are an employee I don't care if you signed a paper or not

I’m an independent contractor off the grid 6 months out of the year. I don’t even live in the continental United States half the year. Have to walk to town to use the PHoon-ah…if I need to make a call.

I get that wrestling isn’t taken seriously by the general public, but what most of them don’t know, or didn’t know until the WWE was sold for billions is that it’s been on tv since most local news broadcasts. Back to the late 1940’s to at least the mid 50’s, the highest paid athlete was the heavyweight champ in boxing, the next highest two or three paid were Professional Wrestlers,?usually champs of their territory.

If there was a challenge to be had legally on that point you don’t think there’s enough money at stake that it would have happened by now ?
Who is going to file the lawsuit to challenge it? Anyone with enough money to hire an attorney to challenge Vinnie Mac is already well off; and it's in their best interests to leave it alone. And, and anyone who might benefit from challenging him can't afford to do it. It's the same problem with them organizing a union.
And to add about the unionizing bit, companies fire people who try to unionize all the time. Wal Mart did it when the meat cutters unionized and it happens a lot. All they have to do is come up with an excuse and unless you have a team of lawyers it aint going nowhere

I’ve voted in all state and local elections, but I’ve never cast a vote for POTUS in my adult life. I vote for candidates, not against them, and there hasn’t been one that I’ve deemed worthy of my vote.
That said, I’d vote for Jesse Ventura. I may not agree with him on everything, but he’s beholden to nobody and he’s not going to BS anyone.
