I read a very interesting article about this race in "Road & Track" magazine, written by the legendary Innes Ireland (I think it was him, but do not quote me on that) that was published three months after the race was ran in which he was slightly (but not totally) critical of the track layout and how it was not convulsive for close racing, as proven by Mario's flag-to-flag win. Luckily, the race organizers changed the layout in 1988 to more of a street course oval, and that made for better racing IMO. Too bad, tho, that the race had to end after 1991 due to the same race organizers' insistence on moving the race to the streets of Downtown Manhattan, a battle that they ultimately lost.

Randall Dubin wow never new that, I have lived in northern New Jersey all my life basically 10 minutes from Giants stadium and the last time they raced this race was in 1991. I was 9 years old and I asked my dad that I wanted to go to see this race and he said in 1992 he will get tickets. But when he got the CART schedule he didn't see the Meadowlands Grand Prix on there a couple years later we heard that it was because the promoters of the race were losing money and no longer wanted to race here. I wish they could race here again, damn Northern NJ needs a race track damn it!

@@allstarchris1 Yeah they released a course map for the New York version of the race and everything but it was a really lame layout, basically just the supersized block around the old World Trade Center (Vesey, Church, Liberty, and West Streets) but with the West Street part extended up to Chambers where there was a hairpin around the islands of West Street kind of like the Long Beach hairpin. Even if it worked logistically it would have been pretty terrible with just four 90 degree turns and one hairpin, all flat and straight. My dad did some racing photography on weekends so I got to go to a few races a year with him as a kid, and Meadowlands and Nazareth, both being less than an hour from home, were two we never missed.

@@de-fault_de-fault I went to this race every year it ran from 84 to 91 because northern NJ is my home but every year I could tell that this was simply not gaining any traction as an event in the NY market, because the NY market simply doesn't give a damn about racing. The 500 has never been on a major NYC radio station, and not even all-sports WFAN cared about it. I had a good time every year with the atmosphere and seeing these drivers in person but the races themself were not much to write home about (which was another problem with this events inability to gain traction.

Actually it was a great layout, you just had to work to get by. It was ruined in 1988 because of construction.

Weird that Mikey had such a frightening crash in a race that Mario won, B/C the reverse would happen three years later at Milwaukee-that is, Mario would have a brutal crash in a race that Michael won.
