Kudos to every snare drum player ever (including myself) who took on this piece. Together with the Allegretto "Invasion Theme" from Shostakovich's 7th, this is the benchmark for orchestral snare playing.
In college, I was taught about many tricks for the snare: 2 dimes was one, another was holding the sticks close to the heads and inching up toward the butt of the sticks on the non-triplet notes until you are gradually there. Another was tucking a napkin in your shirt and over the snare and gradually moving away from the snare -- very economically unsound. Always fun to hear of the crazy methods people have come up with.

Howewer, something special happens, it starts very slowly, the work become more and more extensive, more and more instruments are added and heard towards the end. In the last part, the rhythm becomes louder and more exciting, in order to reach a grand finale.
