I'm third row back on the very right.
Might not look like much but we were there for about 5 - 10 minutes!
Notice that the ride makes it's usual stop at the start then it goes off an slams the breaks on. TRUST ME, this is not what normally happens!
The reason it stops is because someone has their phone out to record the journey and they had to make an emergency stop when they saw it on the cameras.
That jolt when the chain stopped was the anti-roll back, preventing the train from rolling back down the hill :)
The anti-roll back is the clicking sound you hear when the train is going up the hill

what do u mean its not meant to happen? If theres a problem on the track and the train needs to stop then of course its meant to happen

+domo carless Well we wouldnt stop the ride, a ride operator won't have control over the ride lifts, they control the station and they can stop the whole ride.
It would be kayos if we had access to stopping the lifts. however i don't know if that is the case on all rides, just the ones i've worked on.
Interesting though how it slows down suddenly then carries on, speeds up then E-stops....
That's part of the ride. The slowing down is waiting for the other cart.
It's also to put less stress on the monorail structure above, especially when there's a train going along it.
This has happened so many times to me on different rides as well xD love it how EVERYONE screams except us enthusiasts who just laugh and start clapping and cheering! xD
AIR was the testbed (the very first in the world in other words) of flying coasters and the testbeds are always smaller more basic than later models.

You travel around the rollercoaster in that position and it simulates flying. Pretty cool.
Yeah, both my friend (who was recording it) and the lad with his phone out were with us, there was about 15 of us.
People don't realise that items dropped from a roller coaster, like a phone held in one's hand, can cause serious injury to other riders, damage the track and even derail the train if it hits someone or gets stuck anywhere.
This has happened to me before its naormally because there are two trains on the track and they have to stop it so the other can get further away
I dont think that would happen. I'm not too sure if Air uses block sections, but the cars are accurately let onto the track so that they wouldn't collide

Every modern rollercoaster with more than one train uses block sections.
DancerLife AsIzzy no it's because your forbidden to have phones or cameras on the ride so they stop it.

DancerLife AsIzzy that's why the smiler stopped at the top of the lift hill it realised there was 2 trains so it stopped they restarted the ride ☹️

you are half right it slows down to let the train in front go but they did the lift stop because somebody was filming on the ride
I don't know why people get scared when a ride stops. I think it's funner than ridding the ride itself. The best time to get stuck on air is when you are in the station and they just pulled the cars up so you are looking at the ground. I think its fun the stare at the stations floor for 30 minutes. :)
This place creeped me out. I can't remember the name, but while I was there, that big red roller coaster crashed while they were doing a test run since the ride was stalling for some reason. Thankfully nobody was on, but I have stayed aways from Alton for now...

You see, you can't take anything on the ride with you in case you drop it on someone else (especially someone that's ON THE RIDE THEMSELF).
It's true. I was on another ride at alton towers last week (spinball whizzer) when that ride was stopped because someone had a camera phone out. One of the ride staff had to get a safety harness on and climb up the track to go and get the phone.

actually Bicko, if you read the information at the side of the video, it says why it stopped. i know for a fact that it didn't stop because of the other train as some of my friends were on the other train, waiting behind us. there are only 2 trains.

this usually happens on Air, it could be due to the train that wad dispatched before got stuck on the brakes, or was forced to wait behind another train waiting to come into the station, this means that on your train, its not safe for the train to pass onto the track because all the block sections are not clear and so the train automaticlly stops until the brake run is clear

He was too scared to go on, he looked really smug when we were stuck up there
LOL last time I went.. I got off.. and it broke down.. the people were just before the bit where it sits you back up.. we were like "oh by the way! They said it's gonna take atleast two hours to fix!" should have seen their faces ;D

2 days ago t stopped for 3 mins and then started to work again
its called "air" at a theme park called alton towers in england, its a really good ride, and its really really comfy too and im not bein sarcastic it really is.
He isnt soo dumb, they stop the ride if someone has a camera out; and anyway, they wouldn't let the train out of the loading area with another train still on the track.
No one has ever died on Air and it's still running. That coaster is insanely sensative about the restraints, if they're even slightly not engaged correctly it fails to launch.
ignoring the messing with the tracks bit, a projectile camera off a roller coaster wouldn't be terribly safe.
on arrival at alton towers, are you given a map of the park? sorry, it's just my printer broke and i've been freaking out about not being able to find the good rides. :]
Interesting how not many people freak when a ride stops now a days. I remember when I was like 8 and got stuck on a roller coaster everybody totally freaked. Now its like Whoo! We got stuck! Lol.
same thing happened to me at SF over georgia on superman ultimate flight (same type of coaster as this).
Wait what ride are we talking about again? Cause Air was in operation on my visit this August.

Yeah, but if that bloke had dropped his camera during the ride, it could of got trapped in some mechanical bits, or could've had some fair force behind it and hit someone in the face...Possibly even a small child

That's cool, you can hear the roll-back mechanism knock against the anti-roll back track work. You can really hear how good and solid of a machine it is, as with all B&M coasters.
it broke down at the end of the ride two says ago while I was in it. but still it's an awesome ride

I saw the guy with the camera, he sat on car 4 all the way on the left.
id be more worried of oblivion stopped half way down, although it would be impossible

IT's really amazing how stupid some people can be. They know they're not supposed to have a camera out recording the whole ride on a roller coaster, but they do it anyway. Personally, I think filming a roller coaster from a off ride view like I do, makes for a better video anyway. The only on ride videos I do are of transportation rides like observation towers, skyrides, and amusement park trains. You're allowed to do that on those rides, but not roller coasters.

Or rides get stopped if some numpty went on with flip flops and the flip flops fell off the person. I wasn't the one wearing flip flops but my first time on nemesis got back to the break run but it stopped before it got back into the station, next thing a staff member comes out to us and explains you haven't broke down somebody had flip flops on and they fell off. I said which bright spark wears flipflops on this ride.

when i was at alton towers air broke while i was on, then while i was in the queue,
then.... oblivion broke while I was on it and we were stuck for around 10 mins.....
its quite fun being stuck for about the first 3 mins... then becomes boring as fuck!
@theawakener7 actually - its because they're "adrenaline junkies". its no fault of their own, in fact, they just tend to need to do more exciting things to get a rush - as the part of their brain that takes up the hormones released during excitement doesn't work as well.
I assume you're one of those people who gets a rush from buying a new fridge. Just let people who enjoy rollercoasters have their fun.
I'm glad they stopped the ride and forced the person to put their camera away. At the very least, it draws attention to them and hopefully embarrases them as well. I live in Orlando, FL and I can't tell you how many times people try to record the River Adventure ride in the Universal's Jurassic Park section of Islands of Adventure. They've even gone to saying "we see you, no video recording on this ride" during the actual ride and still some people don't get it.
They actually do it to space the trains. Because its dual stations they can dispatch one station then another right away afterwards. its used just to keep the trains spaced out because in the event of a train stalling or ballbearings sticking the ride won't have an accident. Last time i went we got stuck their and someone threw up infront and it oozed down the hill lift and we had to watch it for like 5 mins oozing down lol it was well funny
The reasoning for it most commonly stopping there is due to the train ahead not clearing the Next block section up ahead thats why it slows for 5 seconds and speeds up but if its nto clear it will auto-stop. Or theres the chance of there being an E-stop But its common for it to stop. And its no Accident.
Yh He i correct i have been on this ride plenty of times and they stop it for the exact reason he states. it is no fault it just means that you are waiting for your turn on the track ahead as the car infront has not completed the course yet,, it stops and slows down alot nearlly every 1 in 3 times i bet

i wouldent ever record on a ride there. i would feel so guilty if the ride stopped because i was recording. any way i have recorder on the ride apocalypse at drayton manor and bounty, haunting, black revolover and some other dies at various other places
i wouodent mind it happening to me on that. but it hapened to me on shockwave at drayton manor for five minutes! im going to alton towers on thursday !!11!! deffo going on that
@musicalsgal2007 I never scream when it comes to a stop. Believe me, I hate someone next to me screamed just for something that made an emergency stop.
@gavwaters who spits on people on air, god look i know that some people may think that doing that is a laugh, but its just sick, thank od you think that as well.
By the way thanks for uploading this, I went to alton towers a few weeks ago, hadn't been before then since i was about 2 so i was too young to go on the rides so is was on air for the first time, if it did that, i would never go to a theme park EVER AGAIN!

nemesis broke when my sister was on it and the people on the front row were admiring the view when suddenly it dropped and they screamed! Also the old ghost train at alton towers (not the laser gun one) but a scary one had to be stoped my sister said the music slowed down cus somebody was sick and then it ruined it cus the exit lights came on and it wasn't scary after that! scank isn't it?
man this is what i dont get in these rides sometimes, i mean if the ride keeps on braking down why dont they just stop it for the day and fix it? but no they just do a quick fix and its all good, but then guess what happens it brakes down again Lmao, i mean seriously why not stop the ride for the day and fix it SIMPLE, cuz for people like me or so who are scared of hights they will never want to go on that ride again Lmao but it is funny thought watching them get stuck in mid air :L

Its a rollar coaster dude you arent facing down all the time, that thing flips you over, spins you around and loops you round at very high speed, a phone that gets loose could go anywhere and at a serious pelt!
@MrGlinzz all fair points but at the end of the day you're told ot to have stuff in your hands when you get on the ride and according to the video description that is the reason why the ride was stopped. Also, you can't tell fromthe video whether or not their recording devices were strapped to their wrists or not so it's kind of irrelevant. Nice weather we're having...
Some of these comments make me laugh. Air is a very sophisticated ride with so many safety devices in place you wouldn't believe. The train CANNOT leave the station unless every restraint is locked. The computers monitor every seat and if one shows up as unlocked the train won't be able to leave until the ride ops lock it down.
Air actually runs on three trains. Didnt notice the train had come to a complete stop, so I'll stand corrected there, but its not an emergency stop, as there is no emergency and that is a regular occurance when someone takes on a camera...I should know, as I've been stopped when my mates taken summit on there.
Haha funny thing as similar happened while I was on Oblivion today... We was just near the drop and the ride came to a sudden stop. I was thinking "Oh crap, We broke down" See a rigger coming up and taking a phone off from someone because of it... There is always one... :P

I got stuck on a ride called the Chaos (spinning center + rotating seats), and it stopped randomly, they got it lowered, but rather that getting us off and fixing it, they kept sending back up expecting he problem to fix itself. I got off about a half-hour later, and I was really just annoyed.

I went on that ride and they STOP the ride if they see someone has a camera OR a phone of anything like that out. There is alot of camera near the start they obv saw it, stopped the ride and came too take it off of the person. Thanks :)

right, i can take accept that it stops and if you read the info i state this, but if you watch the whole video i think you will find it goes on for a while and then it stops and we hung there for a good 10 minutes, which while you are in the air is a LONG TIME.
It doesn't have brakes. It has flaps that hit click every time it goes up. When the ride stops or the chains shutdown, the flaps will get caught on the bit of metal and hold the train in place. A train can never go backwards down a hill for that exact reason.
I really do believe you because Ive been to alton towers in 2010 with my friend and we watched nemesis and Im going to alton Towers this weekend for my brifdeh with two of my friends and Im goin to go clothes shopping on my brifdeh which is on the 16th :3
@funnygirls75 @ngh98 After about 15 minutes of hanging there the ride went round as normal, but we thought the ride was broken so I kept thinking the chairs would open.. Wasn't particularly pleasant. I certainly felt good to be alive when we got off though
why so, stopping the ride isnt harming any1, air travels mainly over paths, if a phone hit some1, it could be fatal, i dropped my ipod ouf of a rollercoaster once, smashed it right open, if that was sum1s head, well, i wuddent have liked to have been them.
it doesnt intefere with anything...if your going fast and you drop the phone or camera and it hits someone in the face i.e on rita at 100mph it wouldnt turn out to good...and ps there is no signal on air or rita so...
It stops almost everytime, as i need to wait for the train infront to complete the course.
But yeah, if someone has a camera too, they need to get it off the ride. It's the policy in most parks, this isn't unusual.
It's bloody horrible isn't it. What's worse is that me and my girlfriend were hanging above a massive rock, so if it did open (which we were thinking it might do) we'd of definitely had an uncomfortable landing!
this video just show you that the person looking at the screen watching these ppl go up as seen that some 1 has got a phone out to record it or that some 1 isnt in properly and thay stop and resolve the problem
im sorry to burst your buble but this isent a acident i work at alton towers and the rollercoaster goes up slow at that time so the person can see if enyone is filming or unsafe in the seats is does it on perpus

sorry to dissapoint you but your totally wrong. Air is built with two stations so it never needs to stop to let people onto the next one.

no, he was pretty freaked out, everyone went past the whole 'haha, we're going to die' phase then into the 'shit, why aren't we moving' phase and finally into the 'hmm, I am pretty freaked out' phase

But this didn't actually brake down! They have to stop the ride if they see on the CCTV that someone is in danger, which having your mobile out now classes as .. so they stop it purposely.
Thats no brake down or accident, it does it because the other train needs to clear the first set of brakes before the train in the video leaves the lift hill.
Hardly a breakdown.

air was the first flying coaster with th seats in this position, tatsu was designed on the same style as air.

lol, i know it normally stops, and you can see at the start that it stops here, but trust me, it shouldn't do what it did. it really bloody hurt when it made the second stop.

Omg that happend 2 me on iron dragon @ cedar point...ours was because the train in front of us wasnt done w/ that part of the track yet (it was the 2nd lift hill)
