I have to get my hands on a GT frame! I missed out on a $50 Facebook marketplace one I got excited when he asked me where I lived!. Sent a message me an hour later saying well if this guy doesn't show up your next in line 😮😢 one day my day will come.
Nice upload, i bought an identical Timberline in good condition this Summer, the Granite paint job is amazing. I'm thinking of replacing the stem on mine.
@chican76 Thank you, Appreciate the kind comment. I did wonder, As haven't seen any pre-builts with them for a while. I presumed they would still make individual headsets, For replacement parts. Thanks for adding the information. 😀
Very nice! It looks an awful lot like my daily driver, a GT Timberline All Terra. I don't know it's exact age but it's not quite 1990. Mine has a slightly different Timberline logo on the downtube, it as two eyelets on the front and rear dropouts, and it doesn't have the plastic piece around the seat tube to guide the rear brake cable. I haven't kept mine original, either: it has a cartridge BB, Rene Herse cranks, a new seat post and saddle, and soon a new stem.
Thank you. Sounds great. A lot of these have been altered through the years, To keep them going. This one was lucky enough to have almost all original parts on it, So tried to keep them where possible.
Great result for your approach to re-use as much as possible. Really comes close the original, I guess. However, I might have done some mild modernization to a bike like that: Replace the saddle with a modern one, replace the chain rings with non-biopace, replace the bottom bracket with a cartridge type, replace the brakes with slightly more modern and higher spec'd cantis and probably also replace the straight handlebar with a swept-back riser handlebar. The bike would retain its original looks but ride quality might improve greatly - important if you intend to use it as a daily commuter.
@@retfurb absolutely, yes. As long as it's not a complete rust bucket, you can bring them back to life on a small budget. But there was a significant progress and development over the last 30 years in parts and ergonomics, and with some upgrades you can make this old bike almost perform modern. Which is of course a different approach to yours.
@@marcusathome 100% agree. I tend to try and use parts from around the era. But ive got no issue changing parts like, headset, bottom bracket, tyres etc for modern type. I will probably do a modern mod on an old classic at some point.
Hello, yeah it is easy enough. The top tube has a small tube going through it, so the cable feeds through that. I presume you were concerned that the cable would be floating around inside and be hard to route?
@@retfurb I’ve just had another look and the outer cable doesn’t move in that side frame hole. It literally won’t twist or pull. Did you reuse that outer cable for yours?
Yeah, That is exactly what I had. I ended up pulling inner cable out and spraying grease into hole. Then when feeding new cable in, It went through fine. @@garylythgoe
Thank you, Its appreciated. For some reason, I cannot find the place I purchased them. They were a cheap tan wall tyre. 26x1.95 if I remember correctly.
Great job on this Timberline!. I do like the early GT paint jobs and the 'Stone' effect on the Timberline is one of the great ones. I was particularly interested in the refurb of the Brifters - and would be interested to know what satin paint you used...? They came out great! Also the iron on seat logo, did you create that? You may have guessed by my questions, that I restore old GT's myself, so always interested in how others do it too!
Thank you. I really do appreciate the kind comments. The paintwork makes tidying it up, So much easier. Hides the touch ins better. It was a standard black satin bumper aerosol paint, from proper job (UK). I can get the brand if you like. There are others that do a similar aerosol, That I have also used. Yes, I made the heat press vinyl. I have done this on a few different type seats now. It comes out well.
Thanks for the additional information. The plan on this bike was to reuse as much of the original parts as possible. But on a future build, I will bear this idea in mind. Thanks for watching, its appreciated. 👍
Unfortunately, There is only so much that can be stripped. It is held together with non removable pins. So if they were removed, It would likely damage the derailleur more.

Ohhhh so that’s how u brakes are supposed to be set up. Thank you! Now I can finally finish my ‘92 GT Avalanche build.
No problem. I am glad it has helped in some way.
My wife has one of these - will be doing a video on it soon, great bikes and well worth the time to save!
Definitely. It was a nice refurb to do.
Smooth job! Rehabing old bikes allow you to "know" the bike more, and "become one with the bike grasshopper" . Can save a bunch of cash too !
Ha, Thank you. Its really appreciated.
It certainly does.
Top Notch Job; well done Sir! I had the exact same bike as my first mountain bike in college, circa 1990.
Thank you for the kind comment, it’s appreciated.
Ah, nice. Love it.
Beautiful restoration,came out perfect 🤙🏼
Thank you for the kind comment, Its really appreciated. It came out how I was hoping, Using as much of the original as possible.

I love these 90s MTBs. Great video. ps. yes, 1" threaded headsets are still made (for MTB and BMX specs)

That rear brake is beefy. Just got a gt I drive full suspension MTB gonna upgrade it to disc since it has the mounts.
Ha, Yeah it is. Reminds me of my old BMX bike from when I was a kid.
Ah, Nice. Would like to see that,
When you redo the bearings on a bike repack with free bearings instead of reusing the bearing cage. More ball bearings are better.
