OMG that jacket! It's perfect. I just rewatched this movie for the first time in about 10 years and I have an even better appreciation of it. This cover is so impressive.
Rachel Steiner I wonder which dub they'd have... Personally I prefer the old one, but the dub isn't what puts me off the new version most... When they remastered it they made it a fair bit brighter and I liked the darkness in the original... Sometimes with these digital remasters it seems to take away some of the subtlety in the images too, like the shading seems flatter... Ah well, it's probably reasonably decent, but I found it kinda annoying >_> Luckily I got the DVD set with both versions, so it's not too much of a problem ^_^; If only the original Space Adventure Cobra dub was available on DVD v_v; The new dub for that isn't particularly bad either, it's closer to the original Japanese too... But I find changing Crystal Boy's name was more enjoyable for me in the original... Plus the Yello soundtrack they added in was so nice... And I like the slightly cheesier acting as it seems to suit the film better...One of the worst things about the new dub is that they used karaoke tracks instead of the original Japanese songs o_O If they won't rerecord the vocals, they should use the Japanese ones... They might as well have only included the original Japanese in there and not bothered with the English dub... So annoying >__>
KitsyX It's been so long, I probably wouldn't notice. However the remastered version has Johnny Yong Bosch as Kaneda and I really like him as an actor. He's also really nice.
Rachel Steiner I think the main difference is that they make the main guys sound younger... I think the blue peeps have childlike voices... Kinda makes sense, but I dunno... The dialogue is probably closer to the Japanese, I think they cut out a load of the swearing... It might be better for it, but I prefer the old voices ^_^; Might just be nostalgia though... Still, I liked them sounding a bit older and it felt a bit more edgy, you know? But yeah, as I said, my main issue with the remastered version is that they brightened everything up and it kinda affects the atmosphere kinda... Maybe it was meant to be that bright though, I'm not sure... But since there was a fairly big deal made out of the guy making it be at night and having to have loads of shades of grey and so on... I dunno... I appreciate them trying to fix the earlier dubbing errors for stuff... I get annoyed when stuff is changed for the English audience, for the most part, but sometimes it's kinda an improvement >_> And, while it may be nostalgia, some of us got that original dub first, so the new one feels wrong... I wish they could keep them as an alternative audio track or something as well... That way you have the option... At least you can go the Japanese with sub version still, but eh... Sorry for going on a bit >_>
KitsyX First of all, I'm going to age myself here. I first saw Akira 18 years ago. So I actually AM one of the ones who got the original dub first. It was when it was hard to find VHS of dubs and I would go to Media Play. So there's no need to explain all of that to me. I'm part of the old school crowd. Thing is... Johnny is someone who I've met on multiple occasions in person and he has been awesome every time. That is why I support the remaster and his acting in it in particular.
Mighty fine work bringing the world of Akira to life! I was fortunate enough to be there on set, and I must say I am blown away with the way this turned out! Welcome to the ever-growing Geek & Sundry family, PlayerPiano :-)
7 years later and I still always come back to this masterpiece, I think they did such a great job on the whole video and music 🎶!! Still the best one piano player did IMO.
I don't know which is more impressive the video or the audio, both are magnificent. A round of applause for everyone involved, your hard work has made something beautiful.
I had never heard of Akira before this, but I like the piece. The sundry percussion timbres at the beginning are very effective, and the pianist has excellent precision, particularly on the repeated notes.
I created an account just to say how amazing you all are. I have watched this video probably 10 times in the last hour. Thank you for creating such amazing music.
After watching this about ten times (because it was awesome!), I actually watched Akira for the first time!(definitely one of the best animes ever!) And after I finished it, I watched this video about five more times and suddenly wanted to watch Akira again! This video allowed me to discover an amazing anime and made me want to watch it again! You guys are awesome! I'm definitely subscribing!
I think this was amazing and it felt like I was at the bar in the opening scene. Kudos to you all for doing such a great job and keep making great music. Thank you for making this!
I'd just like to say that this channel has inspired me to get my keyboard back out and learn to play again. I've been told it's a gift to learn to play by ear and although I can't do much right now, I intend to make use of my 'gift'. Thank you to everyone at Player Piano! :)
I start to look at the comments one month after I saw this. Too many haters in the comment section. If it counts for something I think you've got a good talent. I look forward to the videos to come.
If you check out our facebook page, we'll be posting pics from the set in the next couple of weeks. Shooting several episodes at once so we can release consistently. :-)
Seen the film a million times. Still took me two minutes to recognize any sort of melody from the film. :-) Impressive production... visually. Original soundtrack for me, thankyouverymuch, though. ;-)
I think a Chrono Trigger medley, especially one featuring the time machine and Frog themes, would make for an awesome video. You could do some exceptionally kick-ass costumes as well. Great video, btw. Great arrangement and performance of the piece. Cool stuff.
Great job everyone! Akira is definitely one of our all-time favorites. Now we have to go watch it again!
Brandy Cabrera
Wow!
For some of us will be to "read" it again

@Pendragon Yeah I agree.
"THAT'S MR KANEDA'S THEME TO YOU, PUNK!"
yaaa bite me, ya bald old goat !!
Akira is one of my all time favorites. It's pretty much the reason I got into anime from when I was a kid growing up in the early 90s.
“That piano’s built just for me, it’s too much for a kid like yooooou!”
OMG that jacket! It's perfect. I just rewatched this movie for the first time in about 10 years and I have an even better appreciation of it. This cover is so impressive.
It's been too long since I've watched Akira. I should see if it's on Netflix and rewatch it.
