Chile's Secret War: Its First Nations are Fighting for Their Ancestral Lands | Foreign Correspondent

  • In parts of Central Chile, it looks like a war zone. Military convoys clog the road, soldiers armed with rifles patrol towns.
Low-level conflict has broken out between the indigenous Mapuche people and local landowners and corporations. The Mapuche are occupying famers’ land because, they say, it belongs to them. The state is hitting back with military force.
The Mapuche are Chile’s biggest indigenous group, making up 12 per cent of the population. Until the 1880s, they controlled a vast territory independent of Chile.
But military forces seized their land after a brutal military campaign. Later, the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet took much of what they had left, handing land over to private interests.
Now the Mapuche want to reclaim their territory and re-embrace their culture.
Eric Campbell travels to Chile to explore this cultural resurgence and visit the wildly beautiful lands that once belonged to this ancient people.
In Central Chile, he meets Mapuche elder, Alberto Curamil, and follows him as he leads an occupation of the sacred Tolhuaca volcano, part of a campaign to stop the construction of a geothermal plant.
As they pay tribute to the spirit of the volcano, there’s traditional dancing, music and even an ancient game of ‘palin’, a game that looks very much like hockey.
“The state usurped this territory knowing that the Mapuche nation existed,” says Curamil. “So we look for a way to recover what this military government usurped from us at gunpoint by taking our land.”
Curamil’s activism has landed him in trouble with the law. He’s been shot, arrested and jailed in pursuit of his cause.
Other more shadowy groups, using the Mapuche name, are using more radical means to achieve their ends, occupying and burning down farms. Both sides are accusing each other of violence.
Politician Gloria Naveillán condemns anyviolence. “I think they are terrorists, because no-one can have all a community really scared in this way if they're not trying to provoke terror in people. So I think they are terrorists.”
In the capital Santiago, some Mapuche leaders are trying to defuse the violence by fighting for a political solution.
Elisa Loncón rose from rural poverty to become a Mapuche linguist. Recently, she was elected head of the Convention which will rewrite Chile’s constitution. She hopes to enshrine indigenous rights.
She’s calling out for an end to violence. “We need it to stop because we need to be part of the new democracy.”
This is fascinating insight into an ancient culture fighting for survival and a
breathtaking journey into the remote mountains of Central Chile.

As Australian-born with indigenous Chilean heritage, I also see lots of synergies between the plight of indigenous Australians and how they too lost their land and not recognized in Australian Constitutional. Economic interest and colonization is always sad plight in history at the expense of thousands of years of indigenous wisdom.

They are also extremely lazy and want everything for free, they call it "cosmo vision" the rest of us "cosmo flojera". The government has already given them back thousands and thousands of acres, but they still want more, although we all know they will never use it to grow anything due to their laziness... If someone steals something from you, and then they sell it to another person. Do you have the right to take back your item from the buyer?
I think the fairest outcome here is if the Chilean government forces the farmer to sell the land back to the Mapuche people. Then the government compensates the Mapuche for the purchase.
That way the Mapuche retrieve their land, the farmers are peaceful and fairly compensated, and the Chilean state repays its debt for its historical crimes. Hopefully, the Mapuche will allow environmentally conscience development on their lands, but they should have the sovereignty to choose.

You can't discover a place if people are already there for 20,000 long years.., [unless you are thieves, robbers and bandits avoiding jail time for so very long].
Truth is those nations built upon stolen looted lands of Native American people are all illegitimate nations. 🤷 😔
May I ask if you care to know the fact that indigenous Native Americans, and their population in Continents of America 500 yrs ago was around 15 millions, while European population in Europe was around 25 millions.
Today, Native Americans population is 15 million, while the European population, in the Continents of America + Europe, is a staggering 'TWO BILLIONS'!
Imagine this scenario, if Native American people cross the Atlantic, invade and Colonize Europe, and slaughter most Europeans, and put the remaining populations in tiny reservations, for 500 long years. How would Europeans feel about it? Think about it.
All they need is their beloved motherland back, the lands that their ancestors' forebears had lived through thick and thin, endured through hardships and all for generations.
Besides, indigenous Native Americans in Colonized lands of Anglo British, Spaniard and others are more of the same. Kill the indigenous Natives and whoever is left, marginalize them and create artificial poverty, once that poverty becomes crime and drinking, the media points to the poor and blames them to continue to stigmatize the 'other' community, scumbags, etc.
Amazing fact that Indigenous Natives had built such great civilizations as Mayan, Inca and Aztec without outside help, and all from scratch, and all on their own, since they had been cut off from the rest of the world for twenty thousand years. In other words, they actually are great and proud people.
Imagine what it would be like today if Native Americans had possessed some sort of nuclear weapons to defend themselves, and their beloved motherlands from invaders Colonizers? The answer is they would still have their own beloved motherlands, plus their population comparable to that of the European population.
In my humble opinion, it's about time to decolonize the Colonized lands, and return it to rightful owners Native American people. Remember, notorious global cardinal crimes the West has committed, and benefited a great deals, such as Slavery & Colonialism had long been over, why on earth is this another notorious Colonization still lingering on, may I ask? 🤔

Back in those years there was a "trend" going on to where for some reason it was "cool" to be or "feel" native, and since the majority of the population have no idea about their own country's native groups or how genetics work, a lot of people selected the Mapuche as some kind of costume of a identity.
