One prominent figure in grappling history is Mataemon Tanabe of Fusen-ryu jujitsu school. His fist challenge with Takisaburo Tobari in 1981( rematch in 1982). Holds victories over some high ranking judoka. Including Yoshitsugu Yamashita (one of Four Guardians). With some matches in 1898 and the last in 1900. Although not enrolled into the Kodokan, Tanabe did have heavy influence on the development of ne-waza and Kosen Judo. Another point of why he is relevant is because Fusen-ryu jujitsu is full system with weapons, unarmed combat. But what do I know.
The kibisu gaeshi you showed at 2:42 does look a lot like a forgotten throw in Karate called Node Osae. Iian Abernathy explained it really good in his work as pragmatic traditional karateka. You can look the technique up in following video at 3:14
Amazing, video, Chadi. Your research is just phenomenal. Your channel is my favourite martial arts channel based on facts and logic. Facts which have probably woken a lot of mis-guided souls up.
Absolutely amazing and informative video again. You are by far my favorite martial arts channel next to one or two others. Your videos are way different than their though. Thank you for dedicating your time for us.
Chadi I fully agree with your assessment regarding todays sport oriented Judo. Bring back the baned techniques. They are effective and can be executed safely if one is properly trained. And are a boon to any individual interested defensive combat. Continue on your journey lad and God bless you and your family.
I love this video, some of these techniques have truly stood the test of time. I've personally used the guillotine to submit a larger opponent. I've also had the guillotine used on me when I attempted a double-leg takedown.
The kubisi gaeshi at 2:42 is the most recommended throw for BJJ as well. Though admittedly, the single/double leg are used way more AFAICT, despite the guillotine danger mentioned in the video.
Bro I freaking love ur channel bro...when I got interested in judo and jiu jitsu and found out it was a samurai art I just thought that was so interesting because I always was so interested in the techniques of the fiercest warriors in history...and I always had a hard time finding info on it but then ur channel was the one channel who actually took a deep dive on these matters....thank u so much for ur content Chadi ur a legend
No issues with the analysis, but for the sake of accuracy it should be pointed out that the techniques shown in this book are NOT Hoki-ryu. They come from Katayama-ryu kenjutsu, which is the parent art of Hoki-ryu and HR never included these techniques. In Katayama-ryu these techniques are credited as coming from Takeuchi-ryu. The book these photos came from uses the name “Hoki-ryu Jujutsu” but such an art historically never existed. The author of the book came across the Katayama-ryu documents that had been donated to the city of Iwakuni by the last head of Katayama-ryu before WWII. He recreated them and published this book showing what he thought the techniques were and called the art “Hoki-ryu jujutsu”. In more recent years he seems to have taken to calling it Katayama-ryu Kogusoku but in either case it’s not a historically transmitted art. The original documents however legitimately show the grappling techniques Katayama-ryu.
Chadi, how do you find these rare books? I also believe that we need a new competition categories for Judo: Olympic Judo, kubudo Judo (old school Judo and Jujutsu, with leg takedowns, etc), Nezawa Judo and free Judo (free grappling). This would reunite the BJJ and Judo and allow the effective older techniques to be reintegrated back into the sport/art.
Oh, well, if someone says it can work in HEMA then that really is the last absolute word on it. They know everything after all. They're not obnoxious cvnts like those BJJ weenies. No, not at all.
I was just giving an example of a ruleset that has both swords and wrestling. Not sure why you felt the need to come in here with some sort of snarky bullshit, I wasn't making any sort of comment towards the superiority of one art over another... that shit is all in your head, brother.
For the past few years there have been discussions about removing the sport of wrestling from the Olympics! With that being said if that becomes a reality do you think that the full technical syllabus of Judo will make a return in competition regarding all the excluded or banned techniques such as leg grabs as well as extended time for ne-waza.
Thank you so much for this amazing video, dear Chadi. This wonderful book is available somewhere ? I'm french and i don't always understand exactly what is said 😅
I would let the Olympic rules as they are, but would create a 'freestyle judo' competition set in parallel. Hobby judokas like me would benefit immensely from it, as the real Judo heritage, as a complete martail (well, at leasr grappling) art would be restored. and on the long term it would draw masses into the art as well
Can I say the quiet part out loud? The Olympic committee destroys everything that it touches. Most recently, the committee took the deeply flawed WKF karate kumite and wrecked it by removing most of the takedowns because "it looked too much like judo." This should sound familiar because the committee thought that judo looked too much like wrestling, so they implemented a rule against leg grabbing. Soon, I suspect, they will outlaw swords in fencing because they look too much like javelins. I grieve every time a new sport is accepted into the Olympics.
You guys should do something akin to the BJJ globetrotters. Belt ranking based on rigorous peer review rather than rigid hierarchy. Official school framework made accessible without demanding financial tribute.

Rhadi Ferguson was skilled, power-burst wrestler. Once he came up against someone who actually knew Judo, his bullshit ended quick.
