I painted the exterior of my home last summer. Good advice on the gutters. Did not think of that. I like my color because it’s easy to keep clean and the house doesn’t stand out. It just fits in. Yes I did think about my roof color before choosing the siding paint for the 8 inch cedar siding. I went with a custom mixed color from BM. One thing you should also talk about is arborstain v paint and gloss v flat. Gloss on trim? Flat on siding? BM moorglo is a great choice for trim. But I used a flat for the siding. Also door color please a little advice on that. Stained v painted door? color match shutters? Or not necessary. What color iron work white or black ? What color fence ? So many decisions. Need a part 2 please. See you Friday ! 🤗👍🏻

Great ideas. I was recently thinking about painting my house. But I’m not sure. We might move, so there’s that. But if we stay awhile longer, maybe. It’s white with some black shutters, it’s slightly Victorian, older like 1900’s maybe a tad colonial. It looks good, does really need painting, blends with the area. The thing that bothers me is the blinding cast of sunlight in the summer. I’m in Iowa and for some reason it’s very bright!
I was toying with the idea of just painting the lower area or trim or garage myself. And yes I’m trying to create shade with a pergola & sun sails, stuff like that.

Hoping to get a response here:
I'm struggling as to what combination I should use for my 70s Tudor style home. I have 2 flat dormers (doesn't stick out but the roof line does create 2 triangles to feature the 2 windows)
2:20 says to consider the style of your interior. Well, we're planning on a Japandi style so at the very least the the beams on the exterior will go, but where does this leave us for colour choices for siding?
Roof is Black and the lower half of the exterior is a concrete-brick (Grey concrete color)
Something tells me to go with a Sand colour so it remains neutral and not too country-style, but my alter ego says pick Sage to match it with the neighbourhood (my soffit and door will be wood grain, haven't decided on the hue whether light or espresso-caramel)
    What would you recommend?

I'm an interior designer, and a serious Type A personality so when we were ready to paint our 50s home, I drove around our neighborhood to make sure we weren't the 6th house on the block that would be grey. Then I took a picture of the house, loaded that into CAD, then did a basic line drawing of the home, pasted that into Photoshop and then played with a hundred and one color options for the base, door, shutters and window boxes, until I found a combination that was unique, without being weird or duplicating in our neighborhood. A lot of time and effort for sure, but we are so happy with how it turned out in the end. We also knew we would be putting on a new roof, so I used the color we knew we wanted to do for the roof too. It was worth every second spent on it for sure.

    • @lyngideon
      @lyngideon 2 года назад +1

@@betwil3 I totally get it. Not everyone has the same skillset or access to some of the more specialized software, but there are some much easier ways to do what I did. I'd probably start with a picture of my house and then trace the basic outlines onto a sheet of paper, scan it into a computer then you can use a simple program like Paint or Powerpoint to fill in with paint options. As always, the colors that you get on your computer, no matter what computer, will always be a bit off depending on monitors, but it will really help give you a better idea of what will work before you paint. :-D

Great timing on this video.♡ Tis the season for paint projects. I'm currently consulting with clients mostly right now for exteriors and garden design. One more subcategory to add to your "consider the location" tip is to really, really pay attention to the houses on either side of your house. Whatever you do will greatly affect them the most. Can't tell you how many times I see three "gray" houses in a row that look green, blue, and purple, because of neighboring undertones, or the beige family, where the houses look yellow, peach, and greenish gray all lined up. Great video. The world will be a more beautiful place because you are helping to teach others. ♡
Found your channel a few months ago, and just love hearing from a brave ("this one will get me in trouble, but, I'm just going to say it"♡) like-minded soul. Also, love the videos with you and your husband together. The way he looks at you, you can see how much he loves you. My hubby and I are still having fun after thirty years of marriage also. Sending much love from Washington state ♡♡♡

My dad was a contractor in New Orleans in the 70's, 80's 90's and he did a lot of upscale properties throughout the city and greater New Orleans area. He had such a great eye, attention to detail and could make everything beautiful. But every once in a while he would have a client that wanted to do things 100% their way because they saw it in a magazine and not trust his expertise and experience. He would politely tell them it wouldn't look right on the house or in the n'hood but he would paint it. And then.... they always HATED it, lol. They would call and say he was right and ask if he would come back and repaint the WHOLE house. He would go back and paint the house/shutters/trim the better colors and sometimes the homeowner would literally cry because they couldn't believe how beautiful it turned out. So it is important to find someone who will help make your home amazing and understands color undertones, LRV and most of all what NOT to do on your homes exterior. If a person wants to be eccentric, do it with garden art or jewelry not paint color. :)

Great tips! I, thankfully, don't live in a neighborhood with an HOA--never will. But I do realize how important picking your house colors are. Taking into consideration the roof color, and do the trim and house paint colors work together... How the color looks in different lights. Don't pick crazy colors for sure! Unless your neighborhood has that vibe. The colors I picked(over much debate and tons of paint samples)for my house are a little different for my neighborhood, but I did notice others have copied it. And no they are not crazy, but they are cheery colors that go well with our dark gray roof(frost white trim and garage door with a soft medium cool blue for the house). So no HOA to worry about. I do call it the Easter house though. If we were ever to sell it I would re-paint it(which it is due in like 5-8 years)a nice neutral... Not that I would sell as I have no where to go. That is what happens when you live in one of the hottest housing markets in America(we are next after Boise). So for now I am enjoying my beautiful cheery Easter house with splashes of colorful flowers all over the yard from Spring through Fall! I have the same alarm system that I installed not long ago... Love it! Love you Valentina! 😊

Any input on painting exterior brick? Was reading that latex is a no go for brick, but a mineral based brick stain is the way to go(whether opaque or a wash...I am looking for an opaque finish on my fed colonial brick front, probably in a white or light ivory, and doing the siding the same color)? Any experience with that?

Completely agree with what you have said. It's fun to get those creative, inspired ideas but the question I always myself is, "if I had to sell my house tomorrow, is what I would like to do going to help or hinder the sale?" If it's an easy fix, like a crazy color for an interior room, then have fun with that because it is easy to change back. But as this video points out, careful decisions need to be made with expensive issues, like exterior paint. And fortunately of unfortunately, keeping with the neighborhood style is very important, imo.

Our house is a Victorian. When we were ready to paint it we drove around various neighborhoods that had Victorian houses to check out colors, and I took pictures! I also looked in Victorian magazines. That’s where I found the color palette we used! The house itself is a muted blue, and trim colors are green, yellow, white, and dark blue. It might be too many colors on some house, but it is perfect on a Victorian!

I have a stucco house with some browny, beige stone work, medium beige paint, a small amount of aged/greenish metal over the front entrance, and green shutters and roof. I've had many tell me that my house is their all-time fav house ever, so I'm scared to change it but think those colors might be dated and it needs fresh paint and new roof. How much does it cost to paint the exterior of the house 5k plus labor maybe? I know many people that pay that much a month on their credit cards. Why do we worry so much about our neighbor's opinion? I am painting the exterior of my house this summer again. No need to check with the neighbors or HOA. I respect your opinion and love your videos very much but sometimes we need to think outside the box. The world is not black and white. Take a risk and go for it. Life is too short.

I agree! I have a small pale yellow ranch home in a neighborhood with no HOA and painted the shutters from burgundy to turquoise a couple years ago with no regrets. Since they’re more of a detail, the whole house doesn’t stick out too much, but it adds an unexpected bit of color. I live in the Midwest, so people’s tastes are a bit more conservative, but that’s not my taste and I believe in staying true to my style. I also use this color and a lot of color in general in my home. I’m a web designer with a formal art education and don’t understand why so many people are afraid of color. If it’s a color you’ve loved for a long time, you probably won’t tire of it anytime soon. Be bold and go for it!

One of my neighbors picked the most beautiful gray roof the only problem was his house is a bright red brick. Indivually both are beautiful, separately not so much. I on the other hand, and much to my husband's frustration chose a roof color that blended the existing trim (color picked by the previous owners) and the brick and the new gutters. We need to redo our roof and windows and I am struggling weather we should get black or white windows. I LOVE the look of black and white contrast, but the inside of my home is an all white, gold, white oak, rust brown and green (plants) with no black in sight. So I am hesitant on the black windows. For roof I'm thinking on a black or rust brown/orange metal roof (European feeling). We are in Canada and would be doing triple pane with tinted windows, we are also in suburbs, right next to a bunch of farms!... Any help would be appreciated!! HELP!!!! We are building a two story brick modern farmhouse style home in north Dallas TX. We are painting the brick SW light french gray and garage door black. The roof is noir black, the windows are also black. What color trim and gutters would you use? Look forward to hear from you. Thank you

We disliked the color of the house we recently moved into. Repainting wasn’t in the budget, so we thought maybe just do the trim a different color. While driving around the neighborhood we noticed half the houses had corner trim painted siding color instead of trim color like ours. We decided to give it a go. What a difference! Once those trim pieces were painted, our “yellow” house turned out to be more of a warm white. We can live with that. Funny how your eyes can be tricked.

I keep thinking about this video, I live on a cul de sac… my neighbors have chosen muted easter colors. 1 is green and yellow, 2 dark brown and black, 3 green and orange!, 4 front is dirty yellow back is blue and the other is light grey. Mine is currently a muted mauve and we’re going white. I’m excited because I
know the drama it’s going to cause but we need to get them out of the not so cool 70’s. And they are all ranch style houses.

I bought a brand new build house in the Seattle area in 1990. Around 1992 or 1993, I decided to paint my house exterior the exact same color. The got the paint colors/brand from my builder & painted it with a roller by myself. That way, using the same exact color, the HOA didn't have to know! Plus, our builder probably didn't put it on real thick, so it was very subtle, but I think it made my house look better. My house siding was horizontal wood slats, so it was easy to start & stop over a few weekends. It rains 6 days per week for about 9 months of the year so probably not a bad idea to have an extra coat of paint put on. It only cost me a few hundred dollars.

Interesting im about to paint my house and my house is Victorian has grey roof about 7 yrs old so still has alot of life, but was in the process of painting the exterior and gutters! I was going to pick a gray with warm undertones like a griege, but my gutters will be white now im worried it will be a soar thumb having them white its going to accent them which will distract from the exterior walls what should I do? Just pick a white light color so the gutters dont stand out? Thanks in advance its a old cream color with oxidation on aluminum siding definitely needs painting 😕 😔 🤔

All around my neighborhood people are starting to paint with these new paint options and so many do not match the roof color. Living in Arizona the sun eats paint for breakfast. I’d love to paint over our brick home or have it rendered and painted, but once you start painting the outside then it’s more work to keep it maintained although it looks beautiful 😍, we’re just getting to old for those big jobs around our home now unless you have an endless supply of money 💰 to keep forking out for the maintenance. We have other things we want to do now and our home is basically maintenance free. 💖💖🇦🇺

Don’t paint over brick. It’s porous and more likely to peel and look awful over time. Enjoy the natural patina of an excellent home facade. Real brick lasts a long time; it’s the mortar you need to watch for.

@@youbetcha108 many homes in Australia 🇦🇺 they’ve painted over the bricks when renovating the older homes, and I know there’s a process and special paint you have to use, but, it’s just a Dream of mine to have it done because anything painted requires maintenance in years to come and we’re too old to be worrying about that, plus we’d get professional painters in to do it and that costs a fortune here in Australia 🇦🇺 to have your home painted. Thanks for your response. 😊

@@-nellie-m3711 yes. Different weather may allow a paint job to last. In the humid, hot, dry, wet, cold, freezing weather in New York the expansion contraction and porous surface causes the heavy flaking paint which eventually looks awful on brick. And then requires removal which can be polluting to the soil underneath. Try not to paint brick. Look into your climate before you do it. Drive around see how long it lasts on other homes. Don’t base your decision on newly painted surfaces.
