  • My new and first ever proper life goal is to own a tea shop. But until then, I need to perfect my recipes and figure out the laws behind selling cakes. Wish me luck!

Colin, this sounds exciting! We Americans are the worst when it comes to restrictive, overlapping, and confusing restrictions on food-related businesses, aren't we? I have NO wisdom or experience to impart here; it sounds like, when the time comes to actually open an establishment, you'll need to consult in person with someone who's a bona fide expert on this sort of work in Chicago, and can ensure that you do all the needed paperwork.
You might also get a laugh, if you have some older gay American friends around, if you ask them to tell you the old implication of the term "tea room."
    Good luck!

Im howling, thats hilarious, I can't believe I forgot that was a phrase for... cottaging. I was busy laughing at cottage food laws. Thank you for your continued viewership and keeping me from making naughty mistakes in my goal. ;-)

Cottaging, that's the term my anglophile brain was trying to recall. I remember once encountering a serious sociological book titled "Tea Room Trade."
Tea shop is probably the most common alternative. That said, I must admit that the nicest place of that sort in my area calls itself British Bell Tea Room, so what do I know? www.britishtearoom.com/home.html
(I haven't been there in too long, must get back for lunch soon....)

I want my own bakery but unless someone leaves me an insane amount of money in a will or I win the lottery, it's never going to happen. They don't like giving you money if you're almost 40 and you have an honours degree...
