I thought my breakaway throw would develop with time but it never did, it just got more and more sloppy. The sooner you see this video as novice player, the better you'll be for it. It's much easier to develop good technique then unlearning a bad habit and re-learning how to properly do something. Any time muscle memory is involved, it's very hard to change it up. I am surprised more people aren't talking about this in the yoyo community. So thank you, Brandon Vu for putting this video out, it's changed the game for me.

I had to invent a new way to even tie myself to the yoyo. When I threw using that method, I ended up doing exactly what you explained just out of physics tho it didn't always lead to a straight throw. When my pain got better I switched back to the right way to string. Because of having done it before, I started to notice pros doing this even while teaching it the "basic" way. But I never made the connection to actually try it this way again. This was a perfect breakdown of a pretty evasive detail. Thank you! BTW, would love to see more vids of this type. Sort of demystifying certain less obvious things about throwing, especially for us beginners/novices. Maybe for example, those of us who are shorter have less string to work with, as well as less ability to separate strings with shorter fingers leaving smaller gaps to fit yoyos through. Would be great to get some advice or less than obvious tips to help compensate for or maximize the spaces we have. Maybe even what type of specs/styles we might wanna look for when yoyo shopping for functionality.

And yeah that injury was all due to abuse of that wind where you just throw the dead yoyo as hard as you can then bind. Cept I was brand new and using an Origami, which I love now, but is a little heavy for a first yoyo. I guess off the top of my head one thing might be are there certain maybe body mechanical tips to help us keep things consistent and lined up easier and reduce friction and early tilt. Are there less obvious things that contribute to slowing a spin to watch out for? Thanks again and looking forward to more yoyo mystery solving vids! It's like being a kid and watching Jonny Quest again. The original ones, not that 90s remake stuff LOL
This is the single most rewarding 4 minutes of yoyo video I've ever watched. I wasn't quite doing the noob throw caricature you show at the beginning. I'd definitely realised that a lot of the power of a throw comes from the moment after you release the yoyo - there is is that moment when you are able to pull really hard against the momentum of the yoyo and you can really feel it spinning up. But I hadn't realised how much you can multiply that up by releasing a bit before that pull. I literally watched this video, picked up my yoyo and immediately my breakaways are loads better. Thankyou!

You wouldn’t believe how much this as helped me. With the old way, yoyoing had become a bit painful because the way I was throwing it, the string would obliterate the side of my index finger as it was forced into it. Cut up my finger pretty bad making it bleed and scab up. With this, I don’t have such problem and yoyoing is enjoyable again Not only this but my throws are SO much better. Not wobbly or off centered, but a nice clean throw
This is really cool! Looks like the gist is to orient the yoyo how you want it to end up, then instead of "throwing" you "whip" it. As long as your whipping motion doesn't cause the string to graze the inner walls of the yoyo, the yoyo will retain the orientation you selected regardless of your hand's orientation.

Yeah, to some extent. Though if you're not used to it, you could play sloppier with longer string because it's harder to control the yoyo but you could still pretty much do tech tricks easy even without long strings
For the past months I only focused on the front style because i COULDN'T get that stupid breakaway down I swear i just tried what you did and it worked on my second try and i just finished jumping in my room and im writing this rn So... thanks a lot

Wow. This is a game changer. I've actually been hurting my elbow from throwing. This is gentler and more accurate. I'm also throwing sleepers straighter using the same method (letting go before I start to throw).

Rather than gripping it tightly, it's actually to just rest the yoyo within the grasp of your palm. It can be intimidating, best would be to use a shorter string at first. Once you're used to it. Breakaway my man, breakaway...

Hey great video, I just have a question, sometimes when I throw it, I get a good hard throw, and it’s spinning pretty fast, but it’s shaking/wobbling quite a bit. And I know it’s not the yoyo cause I can smoothen it out with my nail. Does this ever seem to happen to you? Thanks

I had to figure this out myself by watching RUclips videos frame-by-frame of players like yourself and YoYoJoe1. Your videos are good for this, but I think YoYoJoe1 has a slightly better camera/lighting setup than you do so it's a little clearer to see - it all happens a bit too fast on your videos to be clearly visible! 😀

I love your videos dude 😎 I think YoYoJoe1 has a bigger space to work with - in a couple of his tutorial videos you can see his setup - looks like he has some pretty fancy studio lights. I totally agree about the 'teaching' vs 'pro' methods - I'm currently teaching my 12 y/o daughter and I know she'd struggle with the 'pro' breakaway technique. The 'teaching' technique is much easier for kids, especially if they're using a responsive yoyo - slower, more controllable, and much less likely to end up with the yoyo hitting the ground or smashing them in the face! Btw there's a rather polarised discussion of this video on the YYE forums - some think teaching the 'pro' method from the start is better, which I guess might be the case for adults or older kids.
I can somewhat get it, but I noticed that my yoyo is doing a kind of backspin thing whenever I do this. I'm a little unsure as to what I'm doing wrong. edit: I figured it out. It only really does that when I drop it... I'm good with it, now. My side mounts just try to turn into gyroscopic flops, though.
It was a natural progression I’d say. I realised the difference when I noticed my brother had an amateur throw, and I didn’t. That was how I was able to articulate it and teach it. I came to the new throw subconsciously, can’t say I ever deliberately made the switch.
