  • So you’ve decided you want to try water culture and you have a volunteer Phalaenopsis.
    Soak plant well before attempting to unpot
    Be sure to remove all media
    Trim as little as possible of the old root
    Just remove dead velamen and leave root whenever possible
    Let roots dry overnight before introducing water
    Start off slow so you don’t drown the plant
    Watch plant closely for signs of trouble

    I have a beautiful Orchid that was a gift in a beautiful glass pot. The leaves started turning yellow after about a year. It had huge blooms, the pot had no drainage holes so I was very careful about not over watering it. When I noticed the roots turning dark , because I can see them in the glass, I decided to remove the orchid and remove all of the potting medium and let the roots dry out. It took about 3 days. Today, before I ran across your video, I soaked it in water and added a little peroxide and removed it, and laide it back in an open dry hay basket to dry out. I started searching on RUclips and ran across your videos on Water Culture Orchids. I started all over and did as you said and removed the rest of the dead roots and the dried leaves that a new shoot may form. What is so strange about my Orchid is that even though the roots were saturated and dead, its actually blooming! So, after watching your video, its now soaking again, since I only did a drench originally, now its soaking in water and a few drops of peroxide. I am going to remove it in an hour, and place it in a dry clean glass container with no water and allow it to dry out again. I absolutely love the look of the orchids growing in a pretty glass vase, or wine glass. I will keep my fingers crossed that it survives, and will definitely take a picture of the bloom. I still can't believe its blooming in this state.

    What a wonderful, thorough explanation of how to transfer to water culture. Thank you for taking your time to make this outstanding video.
    I am a total newby to orchids, having just purchased (grocery store purchase) my first about a month ago. I am committed to making her happy and healthy.
    To start with, I followed the instructions on the tag that came with her with the ice cube watering method. I kind of cocked my head when I read that because orchids in their natural habitat aren't going to be watered with ice cubes. But I figured that the nursery probably knew more than me.
    I didn't realize that there was an inner pot either. Fast forward a few weeks, and I found that she was drowning. Panic set in immediately. I transferred her into water after taking off her rotten roots, and so far, so good. I do wish I had seen this video beforehand, though. I'm chalking it up to experience. I immediately subscribed to your channel. 😊

    I have a new phal it is so healthy when it arrived. I repotted it to a little bigger pot because the media was already so degraded. It was bark chips, so I used back for it again. But after few weeks the leaves started to turn yellow. So I decided to pull it out there and now trying to it in a vase using water culture. I hope she gets better because I really like this phal. Oh, she lost a lot of roots already. But she still have enough dissent roots. I’ve been babying her for a week now.

    Thank you Danielle. Really enjoyed video. How I wish I had found you when I first started water culture. You explain everything so well. This morning I just put a new Phal in water culture. But after watching you, realise I have been to heavy handed with the water, so will go and take some out. I have slipper orchids, coconut orchids and a oncidium in water culture. They seem very happy. But during the winter, here in the uk, I lost some Phals. Again I think the water level may have been to high. Your orchids look lovely and healthy. Hope you are settling in to your new home. Stay well. Looking forward to the next videos. Best wishes Rosemary.

      I too was keeping my water levels to high when I first started growing. I do have some Phals that won’t tolerate low water levels and I need to keep the water higher but in general a weekly rinse and just a little fertilized water in the bottom of the vase seems to keep most of them happy.
      My oncidiums are super thirsty once converted over but I will share all of that in my next video. Thanks for watching!!

    Hi Danielle, this video is spot on for me. I mean, I have watched most of your videos as I have been a long time subscriber, but this is sort of a fresh up for me in what concerns Phals... I mostly grow in orchiata bark. In the early days I converted some orchids to FW and they did well but in my environment and space, bark feels more confortable.
    I do reasonably well with my orchids (mostly Catts and Vandas) except with complex hybrid Phalaenopsis !!! I mean, species and simple hybrid Phals do well for me but the large ones, no, they do not like me I guess.
    Anyway, I had 3 Phals that were doing quite well in bark and all of a sudden lost leaves and roots so I decided to convert them back into FW. Never understood why, I am careful with watering, I use a good fertilizer with calcium and magnesium...
    Now, new roots are growing or branching, I am happy with that. And also because I want to take it more seriously and make a point of honor so to speak, I even I got myself three more to keep them company in FW which I will do as soon as I have the time.
    Thank you !!! And a happy day :))

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  4 года назад +2

      Thank you for sharing this with me! The thing I enjoy about water culture is even if it’s not your preferred method you can keep it in your back pocket sort of speak to rescue orchids that for whatever reason (and sometimes we never know why) take a nose dive and have to be saved. I still have a few head scratchers myself where I have no idea what went wrong. That’s why I say plants have their own minds and just because you think they are going to react positively they ultimately decide if they like what you are doing or not!
      Thanks for being one of my long time subscribers. I try to keep my posts fresh and non repetitive so if you ever have any video suggestions I would love to hear about them!

I have just now looked properly at the roots on my phal and am a bit concerned the although the stems are at the moment quite firm to touch at the bottom further up where the stem is a joint sine are black and a few were very soft I have removed any soft covering so I have the bare root but in places the stem is firm but black I have removed what I believe to be rotten stems and cleaned as best I can i have now got the roots left that are green and white anything still firm I have left I have put back in my vase with no water at all, the leaves I have, of which there are 8, are all firm to the touch with just one more leaf at the bottom that is yellow and small I think ready to drop but I haven’t touched it it is still attached. Thanks for this video, I have a weird case study: my orchid was severely dehydrated even though it was growing in moss because it was very compact. I thought it was going to die but I randomly found the tea bag soak method which followed for 3 weeks as of today. It hasn’t fully rehydrated yet but has improved immensely, while also degrading in other ways. It wants to live, is what I’ve realized. Putting it back in moss is probably a bad idea. I was trying to debate what to do after it’s rehab, and I don’t want to further shock it, so water culture is very similar to the tea soak situation, so I’m thinking this will be an easier switch.

      Danielle's Orchid Ranch that would definitely be another great video! I saw your earlier ones and thought, I can do this... so far, it’s not happened, but I’ve always gone back to watch them again... just to stay motivated, that I will be able to bring one through one day! My current elephant ear rescue is growing a new leaf, but nothing on roots for 12 months now... a little stump has not extended and I have a microfiber draped over it to just to hydrate it somehow ... another gift from my daughter 🤦‍♀️ so sad to see this happen... and it was doing great.., roots growing ... lived in leca for 2 years, hadn’t filled the pot... and one day, it was all over! Something different is now happening to unicorn, but I’m not touching it... I’ve cleaned up the stem, removed the bad leaves, treated with H2O2 and am hoping the top half will throw out a keiki or some roots so it can be saved ... gorgeous little commercial Phal that my daughter bought for herself! I feel absolutely awful for what’s going on with that one! Roots are dead but something happened halfway down the stem 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  4 года назад +2

      Ninja_Orchids I’m so glad my videos have helped you!
      I’ve found there are certain Phal hybrids that just suddenly die. I love the ones with the big dark pink almost Red blooms but every one I purchase suddenly tries to die on me! I’ve completely lost most of them and the last one I purchased is not doing well. I think sometimes the hybridization process does something to the Phal and they just up and die. I e noticed if the Phal roots smell weird, kind of like pesticides, they will die. Period. When I unpot and smell that I am so upset because I know she’s gonna die even if the plant looks great and the roots seem healthy.
      Sometimes the “recovery “ can take a ridiculous amount of time. And then when they do recover you basically are at seedling status and years away from a rebloom but some plants are just worth it, especially if they were a gift or have a memory attached to it. And honestly I have trouble giving up on them, if it’s still green I keep trying. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I have a question if I may, I bought a phal last week and put it in water, her roots are barely touching the water and are doing great for now and I didn't get any mushiness at all! She's in bloom and even her buds are doing fine and one opened in the last couple of days! So happy! Anna Nicky I try to give them the minimum they will tolerate, if it’s to little she will let you know. Typically if she is in bloom the flowers will start to wilt first but if you see that happen don’t panic! You won’t loose the blooms! Just give her a quick rinse and increase the water level.

    Hello Danielle thank you so much - your new adventure will be certainly appreciated! I’m a faithful subscriber and I have two transfer questions: sometimes the unpotted orchid has a decent root system with only a few mushy roots but then you find blackish stuff around the stem from root rot around their origin which is awful because the rest of the root is bright green: so is the cleaning around the stem ok or should you wait? The other question is how can you judge roots in the early phase when their tips are above the water level, low at the start because of their testing period?
    My little update (2 week) on the very ill small survivor oncidiums in low level water, lots of sun, sucking up water and humidity etc: baby shoots are growing but little leaves have yellow tips.. are they hungry (I’m not fertilising them) or ill or both? Should they get another go at the systemic fungicide soak?
    So pleased to find your new videos.. 😊

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  4 года назад +1

      Kate Beedot yes I always clean debris from the stem. If you leave it there you can get mold or fungus.
      Even when the water is low you will be able to tell if a root is good or not. I will be posting an update on this very soon.
      If your Oncidium had a fungal infection it is often best to give it more then one treatment. Especially if the infection was severe.
      If you see new growths begin to die back then definitely give it another treatment.
      As far as fertilizing I always fertilize, even new plants. If they don’t want the food they won’t use it. I feel if I don’t feed them they can become weak because of the stress of shipping plus change in environment plus no food. I never feed heavy though.
      I hope that answered your questions.

      Thanks so much, all questions answered 🤗. Should the baby oncidiums make it that would be a real miracle, they’re really trying very hard. OK, first I give them their fungicide soak (Previcur) then after 2 days some 20-20-20 fertilizer (low dose).
      Have a nice Sunday 😊 and thanks so much, Kate

    I'm confused. Do I keep on doing to water culture even when the plant has bloomed and has healthy roots? Is this how the orchid lives? Do you still keep putting water in and out. And how do that with a grown plant?

    Hello Daniele, thank you for your videos. I find them very useful. I have two phalaenopsis that I got from the clearance shelf at my local hardware store. I have transferred both to water media following your recommendations. I do have one question. One of the plants has a strange root situation I'm not sure what to do. Part of some of the roots are apparently dry and the other half is green and healthy. The strange situation is that the dry part is the one attached to the plant and the green part is not. What does that mean? I've been tempted to trim it but I'm afraid of doing so. Any idea if what's going on with those roots? If you have experienced this scenario, what did you do? Thank you

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  4 месяца назад +1

      Yes, I have seen this before. The top part of the root near the stem dies either because it got burned by fertilizer or it got too cold. The route further down is still alive. If you have a lot of roots, you could trim those roots off. But if the orchid only has a few roots, you would want to keep that roots on the plant so that it can continue to hydrate itself and grow new roots.
      I have a video about rehabilitating orchids. You might want to check that out as it might be helpful for you.

    I just bought a Orchid, from a hardware store... it looked great...
    Nice green roots, 2 big spikes, 4 dark green, firm leaves... awesome.
    Once home one of the cats got on the counter & knocked over the Orchid. The entire mass of leaves broke off at the base. Is there any way to save the plan? What do I do??

    I am struggling with tolumnia's. I bought 2. Tried to keep them in water culture misting them daily. Nothing happened. No roots or fans. Then I saw a video where a young man grew his in terracotta pots soaking them twice a week. Still nothing. Finally, one started to dwindle and finally died. Down to one now. Have changed to orchiata bark. It seems to bethe looking roots. Help!! Any advice would be appreciated. I live in the Houston area but keep my tolumnias in an enclosed plant room.

      So the research I’ve done is these typically grow naturally in the Caribbean. So as you can imagine they have a lot of humidity constantly available to them and occasionally soaking rains. Plus lots of indirect bright sunlight.
      The way I’ve tried to satisfy this is I’ve attached each one to chunky a piece of branch and every morning they get a good soak for at least a half hour ( I have timers on my phone to remind me) and then the go in little glasses that catch any dripping water and provide additional humidity during the day and the next morning we do it all again.
      When we moved to our new home I burnt some of them badly because I gave them better light to quickly. However the ones I didn’t burn are doing well. Putting out new roots and fans.
      If you can figure out how to provide that bright indirect light and a good drink and humidity you should be able to keep the one you have left happy.

    Can you tell me what if your plant has like mildew or mold all the way up in the crown is there something you can spray it with to kill that mold

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  3 года назад +1

      Are you certain it is mold? I only ask because when I started growing I had a Phalaenopsis that I thought had mold in its crown and it turned out it was mealy bugs. they look like fluffy white mold but it’s really bugs.
      If it is definitely mold, mold develops when there is an excess of moisture you have to remove the source of moisture in order to get rid of the mold.

    I have a new Jewel Orchid. It broke when I was unpacking it, not much root. So put in water to grow more roots. I grow all my other orchids in water Does anyone know if this Jewel orchid (terrestrial) will grow OK in water ?

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591

      Kevin Blakebrough I do not have any jewel orchids so I can not speak from experience however traditionally terrestrial orchids grow best is some version of semi hydro. I currently have several orchids that are considered terrestrial in my version of semi hydro and they seem to be doing well. I hope this helps.
