Hi Danielle I decided to try water culture today after viewing several of your videos. I’ve cleaned and sprayed the roots with peroxide now I’ve wet the roots and placed into water. I’m excited to see it improving each day.
I found your videos at a time when im tending my first phal orchid. Youve explained clearly my struggle to identify the " mushy root, the covering on that dead root and the root bud beginning on the stem. I actually came out to take her out of a soaked plastic pot tonight and raised her higher so as to breathe. Im seeing green on a couple of roots as of repotting three days ago. Thank you and I'll be following!
I just today was given 3 orchids and they were not doing so hot. I feel better growing them in water....I am trying to find someone that has experience in this. I watched a gazillion yt vids. Finally I found you. You and one other gal are the only two that are easy to understand. Thank you for being so real in your videos. I have no idea what kind of orchids I have. I have over 100 house plants. I wanted to try orchids. I just didn't think it would be emersion therapy on what to do. Lol emersion no pun intended, it just happened. Anyway thank you for being so real.
Cool tips! I'm trying orchids for the first time and in water culture because I like to see how things work. Got the plant for only a week and am trying to learn as much as I can, this video made everything clear. Thanks :)
I love the way you explained water culture it gave me confidence to continue.Everything you said I experienced. I thought before I was a hobbyist and later on I realized my interest on orchids is farther than that. I want to understand the sydtem more than seeing its blooms..morr power😘
Hello Danielle watch this video every time I look at my WC experiments as it lifts my dark thoughts watching roots going funny. Not joking, one of the best I’ve ever watched on orchids 👏👏
Hi Danielle! LOVE your videos! Questions: 1) Do you ever change the water or wash the containers? -Just add more water each week/days if partial water culture? - Wash the glass beads? Soap? Rinse/Dishwasher? 2) Do you let your water sit overnight if it is tap water or well or softened water? room temp.? 3) Do you have supplemental lighting? If so how many hours a day? 4) Do you have fans circulating for air movement? 5) Do your fertilize on a schedule of how often? -And basic brand fertilizer you would recommend? -Video on fertilizing was pretty complicated for just my 3 phals..... 6) I am snowbird in AZ and Rochester, N.Y., and trying to figure out how to be successful in this dry climate. I just picked up 3 orchids in FL on a trip. Have not repotted, in sphagnum, I know I need to get them out of there, but trying to research this before I uproot these beautiful blooming orchids!? Should I while they are budded and blooming??? THANK YOU! I LOVE YOUR THOUGHTFUL, LOVING APPROACH AND DETAILED EXPLANTIONS! 3/5/23
I do clean my jars once a month (or more frequently if needed) I do not clean the beads unless I repot because I don’t want to disturb the roots. I use well water but I don’t let it sit overnight. I do have supplemental lighting and it is typically on for 12 hours. I do use fertilizer ruclips.net/video/JlIhsfg7Hsw/видео.htmlsi=swi5QfuSt8J-S1qL You can repot while orchids are in bloom and you are gentle it typically won’t affect the blooms however if the plant seems healthy you can wait to unpot.
Have you considered adding one small water snail per jar to keep algae under control? Or would they attack the roots, too? Also, how do you fertilize them in water?
You are such good teacher thank you I learned a lot , my orchids are in water culture but my problems is bright light I live in Canada my apartment facing north no sun in winter at all I rely only on light bulbs, but even though, my orchids survive the winter . I learned much today thank you , I need to drain some of the water. ...as you mention their always be some new roots and rotten ones. 🌞🌞🌞no ☀️ in Winter.
Paula from Mexico. Thank you. I never wanted to look at water culture, because I wasn’t ready. I am going to, to use it starting with problem Phaleonopsis because if they still die, no great loss, because they are going to die anyway. I like to see the roots. I was temped to change the medium often to see.
Ok Danielle I did throw mine into water. Because they were dieing and we're dehydrating which had a lot to do with some root rot. I felt I had no choice but to put them in water to try and save. In I've been scouring all or most of your videos to try and help save mine. I did poor some of the water out to just let it touch the bottom of roots, now just watching and waiting. Some have rehydrated some I tried the black tea method also.
Your videos are very informative. You not only deal with water culture r promote its use, you also provide general care guides for the plant in any medium. Your points the effort to compare and contrast methods provide much needed facts.
I love your videos,, they are down to earth. When you switch over to WC do you ever have the roots just in jar with out water? I see all jars have just a little water. Keep videos coming , even if some little information you may have learned or how plants are doing. Thank you for your time 😊
Great video Danielle. I find it very helpfull because 2 days ago I tried doing water culture on an almost dead phal. It lost all it's roots due to stem rot that I didn't notice because there were remnants of old leaves so I couldn't see the rot. So I tried to save what I could and treated the stem rot, good thing is that the rot was only on one side of the stem so it's not completely dead. The phal has 2 aerial roots & 1 small wrinkled leaf left. The rotting has stopped. I know stem rot and water culture might not work... but I think it's all there's left for me to do. I did not read into water culture, so I hope I did the good thing. Fingers crossed
Do you recommend an orchids roots have to be touching the bottom of your jar? I know they like to feel secure, so I'm wondering if that's part of that. TIA. 💧🌺
Realized an orchid my MIL gave me two years ago was looking poorly so I pulled him out and was so said what I found. So that sent me on a search for a better way. Found SMC and started a couple months ago with leca. Then I found you and the thing has put on tremendous growth. I have watched all your videos. THANK YOU!! Am attending my local society meeting this sunday. I now have 9 phals. Two from the beginning I cut the spike and the roots and have looked sad for weeks. Growing 7 using your techniques look amazing!! Wish I found you sooner!! The one that sent my on this adventure has it stem to long and seems dead. Can it be cut while the new roots grow down towards the water?? Thanks for all your help!!
Good morning,I've been watching your videos and have begun the process. A few questions how do you feed them fertilizer while in this process? When you remove orchid from media and clean all debris and dead roots do you spray the roots with straight peroxide and allow roots to dry out? Then slowly introduce orchids to this process? Interesting videos keep up the great work.
I sent you a note I was watching & going to try! I’m a few months in & it’s doing great! So satisfying to pull yuk moss off look at sad roots and within days there so much better! I want to save every orchid I see!! Thanks!!
Yolanda Prado yay! So glad you are enjoying it! Such a wonderful growing method and I am the same! I want to save the orchids I see too! Happy growing!
Great video I love your chanel👍💜 I have 3 in water culture , but i have discovered that they need a dry day. (just the root tips) Thank you for your vid,👍💜
Hi there I have a question, my phone went off says really has no roots with velleman I was wondering if I should remove all the little white parts of roots and keep the stem of the plant moist was just wondering how many or how long whether it be a couple of hours or a day and then you know so many days dry
After you clean the roots throughly, do you have to soak it in some kind of chemical first or leave it to dry for as while? Can you just put it in distilled water right away
Your orchid videos are amazing. Some of the most informative out there. Just one question that I’m struggling to find an answer to. Can you trim the stem of an orchid? I find that with many of mine the stem is so long that I can’t hydrate the roots that the plant is trying to grow without the stem wanting to hang in the water. Any advice would be greatly appreciated for myself and I’m sure many others trying this method.
Yes you can trim the stem of a Phalaenopsis. I have done this on some of mine with very long stems. You just want to be sure not to cut to much off, stay well below where the leaves attach to the stem. Let the cut dry out for a few days before watering again so no stem rot will develop. I am so pleased you have found my videos to be helpful! Thank you for watching!
Hi Danielle, so is this the best method to grow them in? Because I have 2 orchards that were in bloom, 1 of which was a re-bloom (all but 1 bud fell off, still hasn't opened) and both started root rot & yellowing leaves. The new orchard, the blooms died very quick, browned, fell off and quickly browned all the way down the stem which not sure if this was fungus related. Not sure if both plants had too much water in the pot but repotted both into new moss after cutting the dead roots off. This has stopped the yellowing of leaves, but I feel they are very unstable & down to 1 root but leaves are nice and firm still. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks to your advice I have four going right now, two of which are brand new with pretty great roots! Do you find the roots straighten out a bit after they get used to their home? I have a little trouble getting them in and out of the vases because they are sort of coke bottle shaped. Plenty of room in the bottom but a hassle sliding them in and out through the narrow bit. I am hoping they relax so it’s easier because I think the vases are a good size for them and the shape helps keep the top up and out of the vase. Just curious about your experience with that. So grateful for you sharing your experience! Roots are branching already :)
Danielle's Orchid Ranch thank you for your thoughts! The two newest ones were very rooty so they are still pot shaped. I did notice today that they slip in and out easier when very wet so I’ll be trying that when I wash the vases until they hopefully relax. I know I broke one yesterday and was so upset with myself! I’ll go with wider mouthed vessels next time for sure. Have a great day!
Thanks so much for the information! I've been following your rules for water culture for my phals, and a few have now started spikes, but it now stopped growing! The 'spike buds' are visible but that's it, it has stopped there for weeks! What should I do, and what did happened for this to happen?
Has the light or temperature changed? I have noticed if my Phals are spiking if I move them to a different spot or change the environment it will sometimes stall the spikes.
Thank you for responding. I had moved them, but it was from a window next to the window to on the windowsill. I did that to increase the light exposure. I had also changes the water level from half the root level to less then a quarter height of the roots. It has slowly started again, maybe because the days are longer now?
I transferred one of my phals (one of those just add ice ones from the grocery store) into water culture about 2 months ago, and I'm succeeding! A new leaf is growing, and I look at it daily.....also only give it rain water....I have a mini phal, but it's in sphagnum moss, and it will stay in that...bc it didn't like water culture.....made the roots start to rot. Thanks for the info!!! So interesting!!!
Danielle, please if you may explain to us when your oldest orchid was rootless and u started the water culture to what level did u dip the stem? Because there are no roots so i guess u have to dip it in the water right?
Hi, great explanation. A little tip. I do water culture also. I put 2 drops of birdbath protector. Very safe for orchids. It helps to keep water clean and prevent algae and bacteria from forming. I buy it at my nursery. Think you can buy it at big box stores like Lowe’s. Give it a try. Hope this helps. 😊
Very good Danielle explained properly i did not know this , then what will you do with the dead roots are you going to cut them yes, i will try water culture now i have lots of phals i will try on phals please be we have a good connection are you going to email me and answer me very good
Ok, so the roots die I get that, but what if at the SAME TIME the leaves start to turn yellow go leathery and limp.......eeeeeh And we are talking no roots here just the stem so to speak...... I am so totally that person who should never see through the looking glass, yikes, panic, etc..... I experimented with 5 Phals - this one tanked right away. The others are holding firm over two weeks now, and I water just 24 hrs, overnight with a smidgin of water on the base of the vase throughout the week and so far so GOOD....I like seeing the roots and getting the picture ..... Hope the mites have bit the dust.... thanks from B.C., Georgia
It’s so interesting how there is always one plant who has a tantrum! You can soak the base of the stem every couple of days to hydrate a rootless orchid. It’s best not to do it to often, first because you don’t want the stem to rot and second because you want it to grow roots and look for water. If you soak the stem to much it will think it has enough water and the roots it does eventually put out will be puny. I typically soak a stem for 24 hours and then let it stay dry for 4-5 days and then soak it again. I hope whatever you decide to do it comes around and grows roots for you!
When you first take your plant from bark and moss and have it all cleaned out well, do you put it immediately into water and for how many days before you give it dry days or do you let have dry days first and for how long then put it in water?
Josephine Pena I usually let the roots dry out until they are silver and then put them in water culture so if there’s any damage to the roots it will have a chance to callus over.
Hello Danielle I'm a orchid grower to for the last 2 years, just out of curiosity what made you choose to do water culture for your orchids? Thank you :)
reah P I was failing so miserably growing in traditional methods that I decided to try something new. The way they instantly responded to the water culture was so exciting and now I’m addicted to watching them grow in this method.
Hi Danielle, Thank you for your video, I have one question, I remove orchid from bark and found very brown almost no roots but air roots are in good shape, so at this point How high should be the water? Since old roots are dead? Can I leave air roots in the water? Thanks!
HI! THANKS FOR YOUR VIDEO I JUST PLACE MY PHAEL TONIGHT 3 OF THEM I AM EXCITED WHATS THE RESULTS IF IT WILL DIE LET IT BE BUT I RESEARCH. BEFORE I DID IT PLUS YOUR INFORMATIVE VIDEO THANKS I OUT THEM LEVEL OF WATER HIGHER BECAUSE ONE OF THEM IS ROOTLESS SO I PLACE THE WATER LEVEL HIGHER IS IT OK
Danville, I have roots that have black around them and the leaf is black around them do I remove the leaf and cut the root off. How do I stop the rooting
It might be fungus, you should probably slice off all the black infected pieces with a sanitized knife. Then dip the plant in cinnamon powder to prevent any more rot. Its important to not cut through any infected parts of the plant though, make sure you cut further in so your knife does not pass through the bad pieces, only cut through healthy green growth! Let the plant stay dry for a few days and then resume normal watering, and re-coat the cuts in more cinnamon after every watering. If your orchid is planted in bark, make sure you don't let it sit in standing water for more than an hour. If your plant is in water culture, then you might consider putting your plant on a 5 day wet and 2 day dry schedule, rather than being continuously wet. It all really depends on your growing enviroment so its good to experiment a bit... but definitely coat that thing in cinnamon asap! Good luck! :)
I have well water with high iron should I filter the water, Like I do for drinking ? Or would it be good because it is natural water the ph is 6.02 without filtering its hard water
I just unpotted my sharry baby after it was done blooming and the roots are beautiful and more than a foot long after I untangled them. Ita new so I need to decide on a "permanant" home I wanted to try water culture but im so scared to kill the plant. I live in Connecticut any tips or personal advice I appreciate so thank you.
Holley Ohar I have a video on how I grow my fine rooted orchids in water culture. I think that video may be helpful to you if you’re thinking about growing your Sharry Baby in water culture.
I have several videos on fertilizing, perhaps you didn’t look for it on my channel? Here’s one of them: ruclips.net/video/JlIhsfg7Hsw/видео.htmlsi=swi5QfuSt8J-S1qL
thank you very nice from you i learn a lot today 👍. can you give me your advice please, i have a phal in WC she was in rocks in the bottom of the vase when i pulled her i think i broke most of the roots. when i give water i see the roots have been different. today i saw new roots from the top of those roots should i cut the roots where it s been cracked ? i was thinking maybe too much fertilizers or cause of the rocks. Since i saw your videos maybe the roots where old when i bought the plant. i didn t know they live 2 years. thanks again Danielle ☺
Sophie Khajadour this is one of the reasons why I don’t use rocks with my Phals. I am worried about damaging the roots when I water them. As long as the roots are not mushy I wouldn’t worry about the cracks. If they start to get mushy and rot then you can trim those parts of the roots.
@@daniellesorchidranch1591 yeah that what i was thinking too but i am " afraid" that it ll rot so i keep an eye on it because after i could have bacterias.... i m not confortable too to give fertilizers. How much ppm do you give to your phal because i know you give every time unless when there s no active grow less i am right? I am happy finally we have sun here and it s for 15 days yeah i see the difference they push new roots. I also have a phal nothing for like 2 months 3 bottom leaves are yellowing do i have to repot? Thanks again and bravo to you because i know you work a lot at the hospital and you give time to your passion 👍🙂
Sophie Khajadour I always fertilize my orchids. I started out with a very low ppm (around 90) and worked my way up to what I’m currently doing which is 250-300. I would suggest you do the same, start with very weak fertilizer and increase gradually if you think they will benefit from more. The phal with the yellowing leaves, they do over time loose leaves, does she have a lot of leaves? Does she have a good root system? If she is healthy then her dropping a few leaves is not a problem. If she’s not healthy she could be re-absorbing the energy in those leaves to survive.
Danielle's Orchid Ranch Hi Danielle, are your phals sitting in the higher ppm fertilizer? I got a couple sprouted roots on a few of my phals. One of my phals has extended its roots, and I got a keiki growing in between 2 leaves on one of my mini phals. I’m trying to wait until it gets big enough and cut it out so I don’t hurt the mother. Missed your videos! Hope all is well. Happy growing 🌱
Tabitha Hersey That is a tough decision to make. Sometimes if an orchid has been properly cared for taking it out of its media and putting it into water culture while it has blooms will not shock the plant. However if the plant is already in a semi state of shock because of poor handling it may drop it’s blooms. I have had both cases. sometimes I will take it out of bark and the blooms will be fine and sometimes I will take it out of bark, find that the roots are terrible and the plant decides to drop its blooms, it’s really a personal choice. I however always take it out of bark, if the roots are in terrible shape then I want to get the plant the help that it needs so it will survive to bloom another day but again that’s just me.
Ann Tramonti splitting leaves are often a sign of lack of hydration while the leaf was growing. I’m not sure what you are growing in but check yourself roots out and make sure it has roots that are still alive.
Ann Tramonti so that’s more then likely the cause, the plant wasn’t getting enough hydration. I don’t grow in medium but I know of people who do and they will use a little moss added to the bark around the base of a rootless orchid to try to keep it hydrated. I hope you’re plant is better and has many new roots soon!
Very good! Clear, informative with excellent photographic evidence of what you are describing. Just one question: when exactly do you chop off the rotting root (at the beginning of your video you showed a really dead dry root with no filament, high up in the vase but no chopping: will you just leave it I wonder or cut it off?). Thank you hope to hear from you soon! Pleased to subscribe to your channel!
Do you feed the water culture orchids if so,How often do feed them how much,This is my first time growing orchids in water culture a d what types of Food you use.
I literally collect rain water and only give them that. But I live in the tropics, orchids grow naturally here, so NC our humidity is great rain water works....recently I learned about seaweed fertilizer (sargasum seaweed) I get on the beach!! Free! Just trying it but I here it works great! Fingers crossed. I hate chemicals so natural is best.
Such a helpful and reassuring video on water culture! Thank you so much for your little gems of info 😘

Can you touch on fertilzer...how diluted...how often etc.
What fertiliser do you use please x
Great video I love your chanel👍💜 I have 3 in water culture , but i have discovered that they need a dry day. (just the root tips) Thank you for your vid,👍💜

Can you pretty please do a video about your fertilizing routine?
When the roots rot, do you clip them off ?
I love your videos! Thank you for such detailed info!
Can you pleeaassee do a water culture schedule (dry days & water days) & fertilizer video? Thank you!!!
Hi, I am enjoying watching your water culture videos. But somehow I have not figured out fertilizer solution.
How do you fertilize in water culture?
I also killed all the roots. Do you have a video about how to grow all new roots?

Do you recommend using distilled water? Do you check the pH?
So we not supposed cut it??
The roots??
What an informative video, and so supportive! Do you keep all your orchids this way now?
Melissa Walker yes I do find the roots relax somewhat. I am so glad you are enjoying growing in water culture! So fun to watch the roots grow.
Love this video! How often can we expect stems ? Can I put fresh food in with the fresh water?? Thanks❤
What kinda soap do you use brand name.
Please, could you tell me how and when you fertilizer your orchids?
Danielle, please if you may explain to us when your oldest orchid was rootless and u started the water culture to what level did u dip the stem? Because there are no roots so i guess u have to dip it in the water right?
Yes, you can dip the stem in the water. You don’t want to keep it in water all the time though. You should let it dry out before soaking it again.
I heard Algae was good?! Some videos on it.
Very good Danielle explained properly i did not know this , then what will you do with the dead roots are you going to cut them yes, i will try water culture now i have lots of phals i will try on phals please be we have a good connection are you going to email me and answer me very good
Can you add chaco to water culture
I never realize how delicate the roots are. Just bending them wrong can break them
Can I revive a phal in water culture if it has only roots and no leaves? Thank you
do you leave those rotten roots on the plant in the water? why don't you cut off the rotten parts?
Ok, so the roots die I get that, but what if at the SAME TIME the leaves start to turn yellow go leathery and limp.......eeeeeh
And we are talking no roots here just the stem so to speak......
I was just wondering what you do to clean up dead roots?
jim serra yes, I remove any rotting roots so there will not be a build up of bacteria
Yes, but do they bloom?
All the time, check out one of my recent videos.
When i water culture my orchid can i put in side the house near by window?
Ethel Rizarri you can certainly adjust the water levels for each plant. Just make sure the roots are getting a lot of oxygen and they will be fine
Hi, can we repot in their usual habitat after they get roots?
Diana i absolutely I encourage you to use whatever works for you.
Hello!! My orchid has no roots at all. Can I still use this method?
Yvette Farias yes, I actually have saved several rootless orchids using this method. I have few videos about it.
I really want to try this but am afraid. Try it ones ans all the root rot and no new root.
Good luck! :)
Can you explain what á water culture is ? Thanks
Tauri Baker to put it simply, it’s growing hydroponically. I have a video called What is Water Culture please check it out for a more in depth answer.
Do you use plain water or do you use a mixture
wanda reeves I use distilled water and I add fertilizer
I have well water with high iron should I filter the water, Like I do for drinking ? Or would it be good because it is natural water the ph is 6.02 without filtering its hard water
Janice Martz filtered water is probably best.
@@daniellesorchidranch1591 thank you I did watch and learn!
I'm confused but I am going to two of them
I can find no answers on any orchid videos on how they are fertilised. Never are those questions answered. I give up. 😢
I forgot to say that after you flush you put a little of water is it ok if the rots are not completely green till the rhizome?
I just bought one for water culture it has flowers on is it ok to put the orchid in water now or wait until flowering over
Tabitha Hersey That is a tough decision to make.
What can I do when the leaves grow brown tips and split
Ann Tramonti splitting leaves are often a sign of lack of hydration while the leaf was growing. I’m not sure what you are growing in but check yourself roots out and make sure it has roots that are still alive.
Most of the roots were rotted, so I took all the medium out and put new bark in but the roots are almost to the top of the crown.
Good info but was repeated a million times. Could have been a 2min video
Kate Beedot I only remove activity rotting roots. If they are dry and not rotten I leave them alone.
Great information!!!! Thank you!
Are you growing any vandas in water culture?
Kay Nay yes, I have a Sansi Blue and three Rhyncostylis in water culture.
Do you feed the water culture orchids if so,How often do feed them how much,This is my first time growing orchids in water culture a d what types of
Food you use.
Joventina Kilpatrick hi there, Danielle does feed them and has a video about it that will help. :)
I do have a video about how I fertilize my orchids if you’d like to check it out.
Well done! (You should have dropped a phal, it's that good) 😉
P;ease help me how to grow
My top roots got burned i didnt flushed out for months
