Dude you can't be more right about her being the best singer in the genre atm. She was actually the first female rock singer I enjoyed listening to and still is one of the rare few I can even listen to. Her material with The Gathering is majestic aswell. Discovered her thanks to Devin Townsend.
Wow, what a pleasant surprise to see your choice for analysis. She is by far my favorite female vocalist that has a beauty that carries beyond her gorgeous tone into all that she is as a person. I'm a long time metal musician and I'm impressed you made such a brilliant choice in this genre. Thanks.
Anneke is my favourite female singer since 2000 when I first time heard her. I cried at her concert becuase of lyrics she wrote, because of her open heart and sincerity, pure soul. And her voice of course. Thank you/ My favourite male singer is Mike Patton. And thank you for analyse his vocal too
Great analysis! You've explained in detail some of the things which make Anneke the best singer in rock (which I agree with completely, and I think she's gotten better and better with time and experience). I like having a more in-depth analysis like this; I also like the fresh reactions from some RUclipsrs as well. I think you're providing a very interesting perspective. I've been a fan of Anneke for about 20 years now, and I knew there had to be some special quality to her voice, her timbre or something. As you mentioned, Tarja, Floor, many other singers are technically excellent but don't seem to fit the genre as well. There's a reason Anneke is kind of semi-legendary in the genre. I would really enjoy hearing your analysis of some of her quieter songs like Waking Hour or Come Wander With Me. Thanks!
It's dutch, and yes we roll our r's most of the time, but I never realized I needed to tense my jaw to make that sound, turns out I do. She's actually doing quite well considering, generally the dutch accent is not pretty, especially when it comes to english and I very rarely hear people who really managed to cover it up entirely.
This must be the best vocal analysis video on the whole of RUclips, I wish I came across it earlier, I've been watching so many vocal coaches react and they all ted to be just emotionally reacting rather than providing anything moderately useful and technical. Great work, leaving a sub!
Awesome video. As many pointed out, this format is perfect. The disclaimer and the sum up of the singer's strengths and weaknesses is a big plus. About Anneke. I know no one in the metal community that does not appreciate and respect her. She is probably the only one that gathers both crowds. And to me, she is the best and most complete singer in her genre. She has very good technique, very strong charisma, genuine emotion, beautiful timbre and strong vocals... there's nothing not to like. She is a beautiful person too.
Dear Zach, this was one of the best videos so far.I really like the good and bad in the beginning cause it makes the watcher look for those points while the music plays. \m/
I'm here because Anneke shared it on her Facebook. This is a really nice analysis, man. You've got my sub. If you want to hear her sing in her native language (and also not a rock song), she wrote a song about her son called "Zo Lief," and it's pretty beautiful.
Anneke Van Giersbergen is hands down my all-time favorite female singer. I'm a big Devin Townsend fan and it was his music actually that introduced me to her (they have a lot together and they're a fabulous singing duo) and I've been a huge fan ever since after I decided to check out some of her other stuff too. I actually got to this from her sharing it via Facebook lol! Excellent video, thank you!
I had the pleasure to listen to Anneke Live, she was amazing, I actually got chills. I was waiting for so long for someone to do a Vocal Analysis! Thanks, she is my metal queen
A good number of Gathering songs are demanding. You should check out her live performances of 'Travel' that song is epic that builds. You should enjoy the fact that it is a homage to a famous composer. The acoustic recording on the album Sleepy Buildings is stellar. Also check out Saturnine on the same album.
Thank you again Zach for another amazing video! I'm fan of both Anneke and Tarja Turunen, and I really love you effort to be serious and factual in your analizes. I also like to know your personal taste (that more "artistic" opinion at the end of the video, even if sometimes I don't agree 100% with that more subject part, I always find your reasons interesting and I usally agree with you, Plus the fact that your main focus is the Vocal Technical aspects, and healthier singing habbits made me just subscribe now to your channel!) Cheers! \m/

Great video and insightful analysis. I love Anneke Van Giersbergen, she is one of my favorite singers. I love Tarja too but I understand what you mean when you said Anneke's voice really fits the music. Anneke does this thing a lot where she sings while smiling so her embouchure tend to go wide, if you look at her old performances in the 90's she did it then to. Her voice changed over the years, it would be really interesting to see you analyze one of her earlier performances and talk about how she changed.
I really hope you go down the rabbit hole with her too! Songs I recommend where Anneke sings is Sand and Mercury, On Most Surfaces, Earth is My Witness, Travel, Herbal Movement. Do not do the live ones though, ima huge fan of hers but sometimes she tends to over do the vibrating voice thing in live settings.
LOVE Anneke! And this is one of her harder songs to sing to, without falling into a soft falsetto voice with all the constant chest/head/chest/head power she does.
Would be awesome if you compare this performance to one of the earlier days from A Noise Severe dvd for instance to see if she's improved or not on certain things. I love watching her live, she sure does look truly alive while performing.
Thank you!!! She’s always been my favorite female vocalist and I loved your review. She just gives her all in every performance she’s in - whether in a studio, rocking a live show, with an orchestra, or chilling out by the window playing guitar and singing Wish You Were Here. Her voice hasn’t changed much, but I feel like her voice has evolved as she aged. With any other vocalist, I’d say yeah, they should chill out with their facial expressions while singing, for sure... it’s different with her. I think it’s because of her presence matching her bright voice - always smiling and in her element.
The sad thing is she's simply not as well known in the Netherlands as she should be. IMO the best vocalist from the Netherlands period. Floor Jansen would be second. Listen to the song Travel recorded at the 25 years of the Gathering gig. The one in color. She's crying and fighting back her tears at the end and still singing better than most would without being in her situation. Her emotions got to her during the song as it was a special evening where so many memories got revisited.
Yay, love seeing a new analysis video to listen to while getting ready in the morning. *Just a reminder to anyone that wants to show support for this channel (or any other) - Don't skip ads and try to play the video through to the end, and comment and like. Sometimes I'll play videos repeatedly, and I actually don't mind listening again. It all helps and this is MUCH better content than the legion of react videos out there.
I really loved this format, and I'm glad you appreciate Anneke as much as I do, I'm proud of how good she is. She's my favorite female singer, no doubt about that! I recently heard one of Unleash The Archer's songs, and I think it would be interesting to hear your analysis on this singer, as well as on Sharon Del Adel from Within Temptation. I'm super curious!
I can't understand nothing about you said because I have not idea about this 😂 but i know that this woman has a great voice. I love her from the gathering and I like all her works till now 😃. Except that she is a great person and i love her smile.
The hard r seems to crop up a lot with Dutch singers - Anouk had it in the 00s too. It's something you often get in folk music of a certain type in the UK (Steeleye Span had something of the vibe, as an example you might have encountered)
Cool! Thank you for this analyze. Do you have some "vocal warming up" for female vocalists? I have had vocal training, but for many years haven't sing none :) would love to train a bit and warm up with your video, if you have this type of video :)
I like the format with your -Nightwish warning- ...I mean disclaimer, the TL;DR overview and your personal thoughts. I heard you say "archer" in the video...could an Unleash the Archers video be in the works? :-O Selfishly, I'd like an analysis of Sharon Den Adel -- I'm curious as to why she seems (to me) a bit inconsistent live. _This comment void where prohibited. This comment is provided as is, no representation or warranty, express or implied, with respect to the completeness, accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, or utility of any information or opinion contained herein._
I'd like an analysis of Sharon Den Adel The Disclaimer and putting the strengths and weaknesses upfront in the video was also a very good idea and really adds to the professionality!
Anneke, Floor Jansen, Simone Simons from Epica, Sharon Den Adel from Within Temptation were all born in the Netherlands. You can hear the same accent in all their singing. Many of the singer from Europe add things in their singing for artistic purposes therefore intentional not mistakes or bad singing. I have noticed over the years singers from Europe are for the most part sing differently than here in the US. I do like the disclaimer you put at the start of this video I think it will make people understand what your video is about. Thank you for taking the time to be so thorough in your explanations.
Sounding like a phony is very current in much of today's music, especially pop music with this overuse of this robotic effect called autotune. LOVE to hear musicians like Anneke using their own unique and natural voice.
Dear Zach - Thank you so much for the great content. It definitely looks like you are on your way to a great format. If you have time, i would suggest you to take listen to the Feroese singer, Eivør Pálsdóttir. What she does with her voice is spectacular and very unique. I would love to hear any review - even if you dislike her way of singing.
If someone wants to check Anneke doing a really long phrasing without taking a breathe for 40 seconds check "Waking Hour" from The Gathering 25 anniversary concert "TG25: Live at Doornroosje"
You should analyze her performance in In motion #1 or Travel from TG25 Doornroosje live, this video does while good does not give justice to her impact to the genre.
Zach, you mention forehead tension in quite a few videos. Do you think it's mainly just an affectation put on to convey emotion? If the tension is not affecting health or tone perhaps the trade off of the extra work for looking more "metal" is deemed worth it. I guess really you'd have to ask the singer whether it's intentional or just an acquired style.
Forehead tension causes headaches while singing. It is definitely not for artistic purposes. I try to avoid it as much as I can since forehead tension has made me almost puke a few times.
@@Celatra Forehead tension gives me headaches for sure plus for me it creases my skin. Jaw tension always gets me tho, and feels just as crappy or worse than forehead tension but its a bad habit I'm trying to break. The soreness from tension can really wear you down!
@@ScheisseTyranna yes! jaw tension is easier to control tho. I have eliminated jaw tension almost completely. and I don't have forehead tension either, other than when I'm doing screamy vocals.
I think what Zach and everyone seem to be missing is that this is an outdoor daytime performance; it's very bright (and appears to be a bit windy as well) and I believe that Anneke's squinting a bit which is contributing to the forehead tension
I loved the acoustic shows Anneke and Arjen Lucassen did in the Gentle Storm project, in various European countries, just one or two guitars and a voice - pure and lovely. Also, the UU in Vuur sounds like the U in Cure (without the J-sound between C and U) - not exactly but it is sometimes hard to find in English sounds that correspond with Dutch vowel combinations like ui, eu, ij, ou, au, and so on. A few of the musicians look familiar - I think I saw them on one of the live Ayreon performances.
Hey Zach, In case you are interested GeneralRadames has some pretty interesting videos about "Mask Singing ". He's pretty critical about this technique that is massively advocated by modern vocal coaches. He is also critical of many modern Bel canto teachings. What do you think?
Okay, I checked out his channel and I absolutely love it. That demonstration of masterclasses demonstrating 'mask' technique made me cringe over and over and over. In non-opera settings, the 'mask' stuff can work if the singer is trying to create a brighter more piercing sound, but I would personally NEVER teach it. The only time I ever do training to make sound more frontal is if the sound is stuffed SO far back that the singer sounds stuffed up or closed as a result.
Thx for recommendation, check out Michael Trimble, spinto tenor from back in the day. Equally critical of excessive focus on forward placement. His entire approach focuses on deep breathing.. His early recordings on his channel are nothing short of magical. The only vid of his I wouldn't recommend is his latest on countertenor/falsetto singing, he openly says it's not his strong point.
For your information: her name is not pronounced as "Ennekey", but as "Ah-nukkuh". Moreover, the emphasis is on the 1st part of her name, not the last part. :)
I'd like to see more voicl anylisis of some more female rock singers like Joan Jett, Ann Wilson (Heart), Pat Benatar, Lizzy Hale, Lita Ford, and the other famous female rock singers for a little while. (I'm assuming you don't as much as men. Then again, I'm new towards your videos, Zach).... By the way, welcome back. Hope you vacation was amazing!
Haha when you speak about mask singing I'm thinking about my choir teacher. I'm 15 and I sing in a "teen" choir, BUT, Out of 15 persons there are 13 female singers, so when she says to us to sing in the mask I'm just like "I'M A MAN, I HAVE TESTICLES, I DON'T FUCKING KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT" X) But, anyway, it's a great analysis as ever ;)
I agree! I am Dutch and the only people I hear complaining about the Dutch accent are always the Dutch themselves. Non Dutch almost invariably say they like it or that it doesn’t bother them. Funny how that works.
sorry that this is off topic, ... I wonder what you think about Nils Frikdahl of Sleeptime Gorilla Museum. try "Hymn to the morning star" for example. Hes one of the singer that impressed me much live. I saw him three times and he was vers impressive. hes just not very known, so idk if its something your audience would be interested in. if not then just try it for fun...Also Carla Kihlstedt, who sang with him in SGM also was wonderful, so maybe for a rainy evening, check them out ;-)
Anneke- the first A is pronounced as the a in ackward, the second a is pronounced as the u in uggh......and the last e is also pronounced as a u as in uggh. So phonetically it is written like this Annuku.
@@charmed1131 There is also a live video from the 90s around ... it's amazing how good she was in her early 20 and how she managed to improve since then ☺.
@@SamGamgee8012 This is the earliest performance of On Most Surfaces I've seen on youtube ruclips.net/video/_W4Ge0F4QP0/видео.html but I have to say this show is my favorite (Leaves is such a good song IMO) ruclips.net/video/dSpHDT4XeJw/видео.html she had definitely improved over the years but I still love these earlier recordings.
Yes. It is. I'm not likely to pay much attention to ANYONE who has poor English and phonics skills. That's MY personal bias. He does utilize industry vocabulary, and that restores a small amount of leeway, inho. I hadn't ever even hear of her prior to her astounding acoustic work. To me"Metal" is synonymous with "Migraine." And she's DUTCH. It is one of the harshest most gutteral languages I know of. Her sitting on her "Rs" is a complete non-issue. The Dutch language is SO unpleasantly harsh (again imho). I'm no expert whatsoever. But I know quality vocals when I hear them, and she's one of the best. I could listen to her attentively for hours, and your voice got on my nerves before a quarter of the way into the video.
It's not. It actually is "a" as in "are you dutch", "e" as in "envy" and the last "e" is a specific short vowel sound called "schwa". It's pronounced as the first "a" in "afraid", or the "o" in "Carrot". Amaricans seem to have trouble putting that sound as the last vowel, though it appears in many english words. By the way, "Porsche" has that schwa sound at the end as well. It's not "Porsh" "Porshee" or "Porshuh".
Hey zach, wanna try something a little bit unusual ? There is a brazilian singer called ney matogrosso, who is 77 years old now and he's is among the best male singers in his genre, if not the best. The thing is. Everybody used to say his voice wasn't to last long in his early years in the 70's. Still he's doing live performances like a champ. Here's a live performance of 2017 of one of his most popular songs. ruclips.net/video/-IQGcXOsFQM/видео.html
My girl its so underrated, one of the greatests voices of this era. She deserves more diffusion
Anneke shared this on her Facebook page!

then you have some catching up to do :)
she's been the best female voice in rock/metal since the 1990s.
I found Anneke from listening to Nightwish and Floor. Floor said that it was Anneke and the Gathering's Strange Machines that made her to do Metal.
Oh my god, finally someone is talking about and analysis Anneke voice, I'm in love with your channel! Good job :)

This is from the Dynamo Open Air Eindhoven , 10.000 spectators...
Hey Zach, In case you are interested GeneralRadames has some pretty interesting videos about "Mask Singing ". He's pretty critical about this technique that is massively advocated by modern vocal coaches. He is also critical of many modern Bel canto teachings. What do you think?
Interesting. I will DEFINITELY check it out. Thanks for the heads up! :)
@@ZachAnsley I was shook when i heard of his collection of very old opera recordings. A far cry from today's generic opera sound.
How about Ex Sirenia vocalist Ailyn Gimenez? She has awesome high falsetto up to G6 in cold caress and beautiful belting voice
I wonder what you think of Ann Wilson voice now in 2019 compared to 2000. Ann just turned 70 on the 19th.
Also..because ur listeming to a live performance....shes.more in the vibe than focusing on technique. Anneke is expert
Anneke actually referred to this video directly on her Facebook. Check it out.
Haha when you speak about mask singing I'm thinking about my choir teacher. I'm 15 and I sing in a "teen" choir, BUT, Out of 15 persons there are 13 female singers, so when she says to us to sing in the mask I'm just like "I'M A MAN, I HAVE TESTICLES, I DON'T FUCKING KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT" X)
But, anyway, it's a great analysis as ever ;)
I really never liked listening to female singers. I just like male voices more, UNLESS it's Anneke. I just love her voice.
Can someone tell me what song is that?
On Most Surfaces by Vuur! :). It was originally performed by The Gathering.
@@ZachAnsley thank you :)

Sharon den Adel from Within Temptation next?
He's already done it
To me, foreign accents are a feature, not a bad thing. Dutch and Finnish accents are my favorite.
I saw him three times and he was vers impressive. hes just not very known, so idk if its something your audience would be interested in. if not then just try it for fun...Also Carla Kihlstedt, who sang with him in SGM also was wonderful, so maybe for a rainy evening, check them out ;-)
lol She's my favorite!!!!
me too! Since 95
Anneke- the first A is pronounced as the a in ackward, the second a is pronounced as the u in uggh......and the last e is also pronounced as a u as in uggh.
So phonetically it is written like this Annuku.
Have you checked out mike mills from Toehider?
Hi, can you do Marjan Welman please?
I think she's interesting.

Btw, what is the song on this video? :D I need to listen to it in its entirety
On Most Surfaces from The Gathering album Nighttime Birds, but here she is singing it with her newest band Vuur.
Check her videos from the theatre tour inchecken at Dutch theaters. So good
Where is this video taken from?
It's pronounced "Anna - Kuh"
Yes.
Strange to comment of her pronunciation of a letter different while you can't even say her name right.
Have you heard this? ruclips.net/video/7eqBmEO5MHE/видео.html Within Temptation with Anneke.
Anneke's the best
You should check out Capri from Amberian Dawn.
I agree she is the best singer the the genre
Hey zach, wanna try something a little bit unusual ? There is a brazilian singer called ney matogrosso, who is 77 years old now and he's is among the best male singers in his genre, if not the best. The thing is. Everybody used to say his voice wasn't to last long in his early years in the 70's. Still he's doing live performances like a champ.
Here's a live performance of 2017 of one of his most popular songs.

I really love her but sometimes i feel is too Nasal i don't now.. i recomend anneke singing chris cornell' s Like a Stone ! Live
